Abstract:A nonlocal multiple-shell model is developed for the elastic buckling of multi-walled carbon nanotubes under uniform external radial pressure on the basis of theory of nonlocal elasticity. The effect of small length scale is incorporated in the formulation. An explicit expression is derived for the critical buckling pressure for a double-walled carbon nanotube. The influence of the small length scale on the buckling pressure is examined. It is concluded that the critical buckling pressure for a carbon nanotube could be overestimated by the classic (local) shell model due to ignoring the effect of small length scale.

Abstract:In this paper, we propose a method to control the collapsed nanostructurings of single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs) by helium storage and the key mechanism is elaborated from the potential energy aspect. The molecular dynamics simulation shows that enough helium atoms could restore the collapsing configuration of (40, 40) carbon nanotubes back to the circular cross section. The length of the flat double carbon atoms layer in the dumbbell type structure and the diameter of nearly circular edges can be precisely altered by adjusting the helium atom numbers. Two key storage rates are introduced to classify the final nanostructures of (5n, 5n) SWCNTs. The relationship between helium numbers and the final configuration is investigated; the analysis method that introduces helium atoms into the cavity of SWCNTs can also be extended to other kinds of molecules.

Abstract:The collapse and stability of carbon nanotubes ( CNTs) have important implications for their synthesis and applications. While nanotube collapse has been observed experimentally, the conditions for the collapse, especially its dependence on tube structures, are not clear. We have studied the energetics of the collapse of single- and multi-wall CNTs via atomistic simulations. The collapse is governed by the number of walls and the radius of the inner- most wall. The collapsed structure is energetically favored about a certain diameter, which is 4.12, 4.96 and 5.76 nm for single-, double- and triple- wall CNTs, respectively. The CNT chirality also has a strong influence on the collapsed structure, leading to flat, warped and twisted CNTs, depending on the chiral angle.

Abstract:Single-wall carbon nanotubes have been frequently modeled as linear elastic thin shells. We have compared the atomistic-based shell theory for single-wall carbon nanotubes which was established directly from the interatomic potential to the classical linear elastic shell theory. It is shown that the constitutive relation is linear (within 2% error) only for strain up to 1%. The constitutive relation is approximately isotropic prior to deformation, but the degree of anisotropy increases rapidly as the deformation increases. The coupling between the stress and curvature, and between the bending moment and strain, which is neglected in the classical shell theory, is important for the constitutive behavior of single-wall carbon nanotubes.
