Abstract:The paper discusses the chiral tunnelling of charge carriers through double barrier structure in twisted graphene bilayer. The theoretical analysis investigates the transmission probability for various system parameters under both symmetric and asymmetric barrier conditions. The results reveal that the transmission probability of quasiparticles in the $K$ cone is mirror symmetric to that of $K_{\theta}$ cone about $\varphi =0$. Furthermore, the study shows that the transmission changes gradually from perfect transmission to perfect reflection in the normal direction by increasing the incident energy and the barrier height, which is different from the case of monolayer and AB-stacked bilayer graphene. It is also found that the double barrier structure remains, only in certain cases, perfectly transparent for normal or near-normal incidence. The chiral nature of the quasiparticles in graphene causes the tunneling to be highly dependent on the direction and also on the double barrier structure. Interestingly, this characteristic provides additional parameter that allows us to tune the electronic properties of the twisted graphene bilayer. Additionally, we found that the transmission exhibits some sharp resonance peaks, the number and amplitude of which depend on the system parameters. Our results provide a better understanding of the chiral tunnelling in twisted graphene bilayer through double barrier structures and can help in designing efficient electronic devices.

Abstract:The Klein paradox consists in the perfect tunneling of relativistic particles through high potential barriers. It is responsible for the exceptional conductive properties of graphene. It was recently studied in atomic condensates and topological photonics and phononics. While in theory the perfect tunneling holds only for normal incidence, so far the angular dependence of the Klein tunneling and its strong variation with the barrier height were not measured experimentally. In this Letter, we capitalize on the versatility of atomic vapor cells with paraxial beam propagation and index patterning by electromagnetically induced transparency. We report the first experimental observation of perfect Klein transmission in a 2D photonic system (photonic graphene) at normal incidence and measure the angular dependence. Counterintuitively, but in agreement with the Dirac equation, we observe that the decay of the Klein transmission versus angle is suppressed by increasing the barrier height, a key result for the conductivity of graphene and its analogs.

Abstract:We employ the tight-binding propagation method to study Klein tunneling and quantum interference in large graphene systems. With this efficient numerical scheme, we model the propagation of a wave packet through a potential barrier and determine the tunneling probability for different incidence angles. We consider both sharp and smooth potential barriers in n-p-n and n-n' junctions and find good agreement with analytical and semiclassical predictions. When we go outside the Dirac regime, we observe that sharp n-p junctions no longer show Klein tunneling because of intervalley scattering. However, this effect can be suppressed by considering a smooth potential. Klein tunneling holds for potentials changing on the scale much larger than the interatomic distance. When the energies of both the electrons and holes are above the Van Hove singularity, we observe total reflection for both sharp and smooth potential barriers. Furthermore, we consider caustic formation by a two-dimensional Gaussian potential. For sufficiently broad potentials we find a good agreement between the simulated wave density and the classical electron trajectories.

Abstract:Transport measurement of electron optics in monolayer graphene p−n junction devices has been traditionally studied with negative refraction and chiral transmission experiments in Hall bar magnetic focusing setups. We show direct signatures of Klein (monolayer) and anti-Klein (bilayer) tunneling with a circular "edgeless" Corbino geometry made out of gated graphene p−n junctions. Noticeable in particular is the appearance of angular sweet spots (Brewster angles) in the magnetoconductance data of bilayer graphene, which minimizes head-on transmission, contrary to conventional Fresnel optics or monolayer graphene which show instead a sharpened collimation of transmission paths. The local maxima on the bilayer magnetoconductance plots migrate to higher fields with increasing doping density. Abstract:Graphene is a monolayer of carbon atoms packed into a hexagon lattice to host two spin degenerate pairs of massless two-dimensional Dirac fermions with different chirality. It is known that the existence of non-zero electric polarization in reduced momentum space which is associated with a hidden chiral symmetry will lead to the zero-energy flat band of a zigzag nanoribbon and some anomalous transport properties. Here it is proposed that the Adler–Bell–Jackiw chiral anomaly or non-conservation of chiral charges of Dirac fermions at different valleys can be realized in a confined ribbon of finite width, even in the absence of a magnetic field. In the laterally diffusive regime, the finite-size correction to conductivity is always positive and is inversely proportional to the square of the lateral dimension W, which is different from the finite-size correction inversely proportional to W from the boundary modes. This anomalous finite-size conductivity reveals the signature of the chiral anomaly in graphene, and it is measurable experimentally. This finding provides an alternative platform to explore the purely quantum mechanical effect in graphene.

Abstract:Klein's paradox refers to the transmission of a relativistic particle through a high potential barrier. Although it has a simple resolution in terms of particle-to-antiparticle tunneling (Klein tunneling), debates on its physical meaning seem lasting partially due to the lack of direct experimental verification. In this article, we point out that honeycomb-type photonic crystals (PhCs) provide an ideal platform to investigate the nature of Klein tunneling, where the effective Dirac mass can be tuned in a relatively easy way from a positive value (trivial PhC) to a negative value (topological PhC) via a zero-mass case (PhC graphene). Especially, we show that analysis of the transmission between domains with opposite Dirac masses -- a case hardly be treated within the scheme available so far -- sheds new light on the understanding of the Klein tunneling.

We also point out that the main supporting arguments in their comment are incorrect.

Abstract:The observation of quantum conductance oscillations in mesoscopic systems has traditionally required the confinement of the carriers to a phase space of reduced dimensionality. While electron optics such as lensing and focusing have been demonstrated experimentally, building a collimated electron interferometer in two unconfined dimensions has remained a challenge due to the difficulty of creating electrostatic barriers that are sharp on the order of the electron wavelength. Here, we report the observation of conductance oscillations in extremely narrow graphene heterostructures where a resonant cavity is formed between two electrostatically created bipolar junctions. Analysis of the oscillations confirms that p-n junctions have a collimating effect on ballistically transmitted carriers. The phase shift observed in the conductance fringes at low magnetic fields is a signature of the perfect transmission of carriers normally incident on the junctions and thus constitutes a direct experimental observation of ``Klein Tunneling.''

Abstract:In 1928, Dirac proposed a wave equation to describe relativistic electrons<a href="/articles/s41586-019-1305-1#ref-CR1">1</a>. Shortly afterwards, Klein solved a simple potential step problem for the Dirac equation and encountered an apparent paradox: the potential barrier becomes transparent when its height is larger than the electron energy. For massless particles, backscattering is completely forbidden in Klein tunnelling, leading to perfect transmission through any potential barrier<a href="/articles/s41586-019-1305-1#ref-CR2">2</a>,<a href="/articles/s41586-019-1305-1#ref-CR3">3</a>. The recent advent of condensed-matter systems with Dirac-like excitations, such as graphene and topological insulators, has opened up the possibility of observing Klein tunnelling experimentally<a href="#ref-CR4">4</a>,<a href="#ref-CR5">5</a>,<a href="/articles/s41586-019-1305-1#ref-CR6">6</a>. In the surface states of topological insulators, fermions are bound by spin–momentum locking and are thus immune from backscattering, which is prohibited by time-reversal symmetry. Here we report the observation of perfect Andreev reflection in point-contact spectroscopy—a clear signature of Klein tunnelling and a manifestation of the underlying 'relativistic' physics of a proximity-induced superconducting state in a topological Kondo insulator. Our findings shed light on a previously overlooked aspect of topological superconductivity and can serve as the basis for a unique family of spintronic and superconducting devices, the interface transport phenomena of which are completely governed by their helical topological states.

Abstract:One of the unique features of graphene is that the Fermi wavelength of its charge carriers can be tuned electrostatically over a wide range. This allows in principle to tune the transparency of a pn-junction electrostatically, as this depends on the ratio between the physical extension of the junction and the electron wavelength, i.e. on the effective width of the junction itself. However, this simple idea - which would allow to switch smoothly between a Veselago lens and a Klein-collimator - has proved to be difficult to demonstrate experimentally because of the limited amount of independently-tunable parameters available in most setups. In this work, we present transport measurements in a quasi-ballistic Aharonov-Bohm graphene ring with gate tunable pn-junctions in one arm, and show that the interference patterns provide unambiguous information on the Klein tunneling efficiency and on the junctions effective width. We find a gate-controlled transparency of the pn-junctions ranging from 35-100%. Our results are in excellent agreement with a semiclassical description.
Valley-Selective Klein Tunneling through a Superlattice Barrier in Graphene

Abstract:Graphene electrons feature a pair of massless Dirac cones of opposite pseudospin chirality at two valleys. Klein tunneling refers to the intriguing capability of these chiral electrons to penetrate through a high and wide potential barrier. The two valleys have been treated independently in the literature, where time-reversal symmetry dictates that neither the normal incidence transmission nor the angle-averaged one can have any valley polarization. Here, we show that, when intervalley scattering by a barrier is accounted for, graphene electrons normally incident at a superlattice barrier can experience fully valley-selective Klein tunneling, i.e., perfect transmission in one valley and perfect reflection in the other. Intervalley backscattering creates staggered pseudospin gaps in the superlattice barrier, which, combined with the valley contrast in pseudospin chirality, determines the valley polarity of Klein tunneling. The angle-averaged transmission can have a net valley polarization of 20% for a five-period barrier and exceed 75% for a 20-period barrier. Our finding points to an unexpected opportunity to realize valley functionalities in graphene electronics.

Abstract:We develop a theory of tunneling between two systems of spinless chiral fermions. This setup can be realized at the edge of a quantum Hall bilayer structure. We find that the differential conductance of such a device in the absence of interactions has an infinitely sharp peak as a function of applied voltage. Interaction between fermions results in broadening of the conductance peak. We focus on the regime of strong interactions, in which the shape of the peak manifests well defined features associated with the elementary excitations of the system.

Abstract:We study the electronic properties of h-BN/graphene/h-BN ABC-stacked trilayer systems using tight binding and DFT methods. We comment on the recent work of Ramasubramaniam et al. (arxiv:1011.2489) whose results seem to be in disagreement with our recent calculations. Detailed analysis reaffirms our previous conclusions.

Abstract:Graphene is the first example of truly two-dimensional crystals—it is just one layer of carbon atoms. It turns out to be a gapless semiconductor with unique electronic properties resulting from the fact that charge carriers in graphene demonstrate charge-conjugation symmetry between electrons and holes and possess an internal degree of freedom similar to “chirality” for ultrarelativistic elementary particles. It provides an unexpected bridge between condensed matter physics and quantum electrodynamics (QED). In particular, the relativistic Zitterbewegung leads to the minimum conductivity of the order of conductance quantum e2/h in the limit of zero doping; the concept of Klein paradox (tunneling of relativistic particles) provides an essential insight into electron propagation through potential barriers; vacuum polarization around charge impurities is essential for understanding of high electron mobility in graphene; an index theorem explains the anomalous quantum Hall effect.

Superconducting Klein and anti-Klein tunneling in Weyl junctions

Abstract:Klein tunneling is an old topic in relativistic quantum physics, and has been observed recently in graphene where massless particles reside. Here, we propose a new heterostructure platform for Klein tunneling to occur, which consists of a Weyl-semimetal-based normal state/superconductor (NS) junction. By developing a Blonder-Tinkham-Klapwijk-like theory, we find that Klein tunneling occurs at normal incidence, which can lead to differential conductance doubling. If the (single) Weyl semimeltals are replaced by double Weyl semimetals, anti-Klein tunneling will take place of Klein tunneling. Our work provides a theoretical guide for the detection of (anti-)Klein tunneling in three-dimensional chiral NS junctions.

Abstract:The quantum tunneling effect in a two-dimensional (2D) checkerboard lattice is investigated. By analyzing the pseudospin texture of the states in a 2D checkerboard lattice based on the low-energy effective Hamiltonian, we find that this system has a chiral symmetry with chirality equal to 2, although compared with regular chiral fermions, its pseudospin orientation does not vary uniformly. This suggests that the perfect reflection chiral tunneling, also known as the anti-Klein tunneling, is expected to appear in a checkerboard lattice as well. To verify the conjecture, we calculate the transmission probability and find that normally incident electron states can be perfectly reflected by the barrier with hole states inside and vice versa. Furthermore, we numerically calculate the tunneling conductance of the checkerboard nanotube using the recursive Green's function method. The results show that a perfect on-off ratio can be achieved by confining the energy of the incident states within a certain range. It also suggests that, by tuning the barrier, the checkerboard nanotube can work as a perfect band filter or tunneling field effect transistor, which transmits electrons selectively with respect to the pseudospin of the incident electrons.
