Abstract:In this brief article, the original researchers (Long et al, 2002) reply to a discussion paper on their study of the compactness and fluidity of binary and ternary compound paste systems containing ultrafine powders such as pulverized fly ash (PFA), pulverized granulated blast furnace slag (PS) and silica fume (SF). In the study, through optimization of the proportions of compositions and applying heat treatment to specimens, a very-high-performance concrete (VHPC) including large quantities of ultrafine powders was made that offers compressive strength up to 200 MPa. In this article, the authors reply to the discusser's eight points: the terminology of very-high-performance-concrete; the chemical oxide composition of fly ash used; the relative density due to lower mean diameter; reductions in water/binder ratio; contradictory results in a table depicting the introduction of fly ash into paste mixture; the lack of information on sand content; the claims regarding the compressive strength of VHPC; and a small syntax error. The authors present two new figures, and apologize for the errors made in the paper. They also discuss in some detail the complex relationship between fluidity and relative density of paste.
