Abstract:In this paper, first, we answer affirmatively an open problem which was presented in 2005 by professor Gudder on the sub-sequential effect algebras. That is, we prove that if (E, 0, 1, circle plus, o) is a sequential effect algebra and A is a commutative subset of E, then the sub-sequential effect algebra (A) over bar generated by A is also commutative. Next, we also study the following uniqueness problem: If na = nb = c for some positive integer n >= 2, then under what conditions a = b hold? We prove that if c is a sharp element of E and a vertical bar b, then a = b. We give also two examples to show that neither of the above two conditions can be discarded.

Abstract:Sequential effect algebra is an important model for studying quantum measurement theory. In 2005, Professor Gudder presented 25 open problems to motivate its study. The 20th problem asked: In a sequential effect algebra, if the square root of some element exists, is it unique ? We can strengthen the problem as following: For each given positive integer n > 1, is there a sequential effect algebra such that the n-th root of its some element c is not unique and the n-th root of c is not the k-th root of c (k < n) ? In this paper, we answer the strengthened problem affirmatively.

Abstract:Let E be an effect algebra and Es be the set of all sharp elements of E. E is said to be sharply dominating if for each a∈E there exists a smallest element aˆ∈Es such that a⩽aˆ. In 2002, Professors Gudder and Greechie proved that each σ-sequential effect algebra is sharply dominating. In 2005, Professor Gudder presented 25 open problems in [S. Gudder, Int. J. Theory Phys. 44 (2005) 2219], the 3rd problem asked: Is each sequential effect algebra sharply dominating? Now, we construct an example to answer the problem negatively.

Abstract:A quantum effect is an operator A on a complex Hilbert space H that satisfies 0 <= A <= I, E(H) is the set of all quantum effects on H. In 2001, Professors Gudder and Nagy studied the sequential product A . B = A(1/2) BA(1/2) for A, B. E(H). In 2005, Professor Gudder asked: Is A. B = A(1/2) BA(1/2) the only sequential product on epsilon(H)? Recently, Liu and Wu have presented an example to show that the answer is negative. In this paper, first, we characterize some algebraic properties of the abstract sequential product on epsilon(H), second, we present a general method for constructing sequential products on epsilon(H) and, finally, we study some properties of the sequential products constructed by the method.

Abstract:A difficult question arising in the study of effect algebras is how to equip them with a fitting and proper topology such that the topology is compatible with the partial operations ⊕ and Θ. As we know, the Frink ideal topology is an important intrinsic topology for studying partially ordered set theory; in particular, it is the correct topology for chains and direct products of a finite number of chains. In this paper, we show that the Frink ideal topology is also a nice topology for studying effect-algebra theory since it provides the operations with some of the expected continuity properties.

Physically motivated conditions ask the sequential product to be continuous with respect to the strong operator topology. Abstract:Let G be a finite abelian group with |G| > 1. Let a (1), aEuro broken vertical bar, a (k) be k distinct elements of G and let b (1), aEuro broken vertical bar, b (k) be (not necessarily distinct) elements of G, where k is a positive integer smaller than the least prime divisor of |G|. We show that there is a permutation pi on {1, aEuro broken vertical bar,k} such that a (1) b (pi(1)), aEuro broken vertical bar, a (k) b (pi(k)) are distinct, provided that any other prime divisor of |G| (if there is any) is greater than k!. This in particular confirms the Dasgupta-Karolyi-Serra-Szegedy conjecture for abelian p-groups. We also pose a new conjecture involving determinants and characters, and show that its validity implies Snevily's conjecture for abelian groups of odd order. Our methods involve exterior algebras and characters.

Abstract:For convex and sequential effect algebras, we study spectrality in the sense of Foulis. We show that under additional conditions (strong archimedeanity, closedness in norm and a certain monotonicity property of the sequential product), such effect algebra is spectral if and only if every maximal commutative subalgebra is monotone $\sigma$-complete. Two previous results on existence of spectral resolutions in this setting are shown to require stronger assumptions.

Abstract:A sequential automatic algebra is a structure of the type (A; f 1,..., f n ), where A is recognised by a finite automaton, and functions f 1, ..., f n are total operations on A that are computed by input-output automata. Our input-output automata are variations of Mealy automata. We study some of the fundamental properties of these algebras and provide many examples. We give classification results for certain classes of groups, Boolean algebras, and linear orders. We also introduce different classes of sequential automatic algebras and give separating examples. We investigate linear orders considered as sequential automatic algebras. Finally, we outline some of the basic properties of sequential automatic unary algebras.

Abstract:A sequential effect algebra (SEA) is an effect algebra equipped with a sequential product operation modeled after the Lüders product ( a , b ) ↦ a b a on C ∗ -algebras. A SEA is called normal when it has all suprema of directed sets, and the sequential product interacts suitably with these suprema. The effects on a Hilbert space and the unit interval of a von Neumann or JBW algebra are examples of normal SEAs that are in addition convex , i.e. possess a suitable action of the real unit interval on the algebra. Complete Boolean algebras form normal SEAs too, which are convex only when 0 = 1 .We show that any normal SEA E splits as a direct sum E = E b ⊕ E c ⊕ E a c of a complete Boolean algebra E b , a convex normal SEA E c , and a newly identified type of normal SEA E a c we dub purely almost-convex .Along the way we show, among other things, that a SEA which contains only idempotents must be a Boolean algebra; and we establish a spectral theorem using which we settle for the class of normal SEAs a problem of Gudder regarding the uniqueness of square roots. After establishing our main result, we propose a simple extra axiom for normal SEAs that excludes the seemingly pathological a-convex SEAs. We conclude the paper by a study of SEAs with an associative sequential product. We find that associativity forces normal SEAs satisfying our new axiom to be commutative, shedding light on the question of why the sequential product in quantum theory should be non-associative.

Abstract:Effectiveness issues in algebra and model theory have been investigated intensively in the last thirty years. One wishes to understand the effective content of model-theoretic and algebraic results, and the interplay between notions of computability, algebra, and model theory. A significant body of work has recently been done in the area, and this is attested by recent series of Handbooks and surveys in computable mathematics, computability, and algebra (see, e.g., [1], [4], [3]). An emphasis has been placed on the study of computable models and algebras. These are the structures whose domains are computable sets of natural numbers, and whose atomic diagrams are computable. The study of computable model theory and algebra can naturally be extended to include a wider class of structures. This can be done by postulating that the atomic diagrams or natural fragments of the atomic diagrams are in some complexity class such as Σn or Π 0 n. These classes of algebras include computably enumerable (c.e.) algebras and co-c.e. algebras which we call Σ1-algebras and Π 0 1-algebras, respectively. Roughly, Σ1-algebras are the ones whose positive atomic diagrams are computably enumerable, and Π1-algebras are the ones whose negative atomic diagrams are computably enumerable. These include finitely presented algebras (e.g. finitely presented groups or rings) and groups generated by finitely many computable permutations of ω. There has been some research on Σ1-algebras (see for example [2], [6], [8], [9]) but not much is known about Π1-algebras and their properties.
