Abstract:An industry-scale semi-wet technological process for flue gas desulfurization by corona discharges is recommended. Its characteristics are: (1) it uses an ac/dc power supply to generate uniformly distributed streamer plasmas; (2) it uses a partitioned wet reactor system in which SO2 in the flue gas is absorbed with ammonia water in its thermal chemical reaction stage and the generated solution is repeatedly sprayed and transferred at an appropriate flow rate to the successive plasma reaction stage under the conditions of keeping liquid flow in balance. In the plasma stage, SO2 absorption by the liquid is enhanced by the electric wind and the sulfites in the solution experiences plasma oxidization; (3) drying up the end liquid to produce powder-typed byproduct and discharging the end gas after heat exchange with the hot gas at the inlet. Through a pilot test of 12,000Nm3/h capacity of flue gas with an initial SO2 concentration of about 500ppm, results of desulfurization rate >95%, energy consumption in the reactor 1.8Wh/Nm3, ammonia slip less than 5ppm and qualified fertilizer byproduct are obtained.

Abstract:A streamer plasma induced flue gas desulfurization (FGD) technique is reported.An AC/DC superposition electric source generated a spatially well distributed plasma in an industrial scale reactor.Instead of the traditional dry technique,a partitioned wet reactor system was adopted.A streamer plasma oxidation technique was developed to solve the problem in the oxidation of concentrated ammonium sulfite solution.The ammonia slip was well controlled.The liquid byproduct was dried up to form solid ammonium sulfate.Pilot test under the conditions of an initial concentration of 500—1000 μl·L-1 of SO2 demonstrated the desulfurization efficiency greater than 95%.The oxidation efficiency through one cycle reached 50%—70%,the energy consumption in the reactor was less than 3.5W·h·m-3,and the ammonia slip was less than 5 μl·L-1.The byproduct was ammonium fertilizer.Under the conditions of using high concentration OH radicals excited with AC/DC streamer plasmas,an oxidation rate with practical value can be achieved at a sulfite concentration of over 3mol·L-1.

Abstract:Some kinds of semidry flue gas desulfurization technology are introduced and the characteristics and progress of which is also analyzed. According to the charac teristics of those desulfurization technology, a new simple flue gas desulfuriza tion method is proposed, which adopts spray water to humidify and activate desul furizing agent for SO 2 removal. This technology is suitable for the retrofit o f old power plant, and low sulfur coal is consumed.

Abstract:Through the purification technology of flue gas desulfurization, ultralow emissions of SO2 flue gas in industrial flue gas can be achieved. This article involves dry desulfurization, semi-dry desulfurization, and wet desulfurization technologies. The research progress of these technologies since they were first proposed is summarized, and the problems existing in these desulfurization technologies are analyzed. The theory of mass transfer and absorption in flue gas desulfurization is summarized, and the optimal desulfurization process parameters for the operation of desulfurization technology are obtained. A high added value production of desulfurization technology can be realized by studying the recycling of desulfurization products. This paper summarizes the characteristics and the latest research progress of various desulfurization technologies, and aims to provide help for the better development of desulfurization technologies. It also provides suggestions for the future research direction of desulfurization technology.

Abstract:In order to realize zero discharge of desulfurization wastewater, spray drying technology of desulfurization wastewater was used in 2x330MW unit of a power plant. Its principle was to use a rotary atomizer for atomization,and a part of hot flue gas was drawn from the SCR denitrification reactor and air preheater into the drying tower, the heat was used to evaporate the desulfurization wastewater in a spray drying tower. The salt in the waste water was mixed with the dust, which was collected and removed by the electric dust remover. Then the water vapor was mixed with the flue gas and finally enters the desulfurization tower.The field test was carried out under the condition that the unit load was 100% and the amount of desulfurization wastewater treated was 5.1m 3 /h.The results showed that the hot smoke gas volume of drying tower was about 64896m 3 /h, The smoke temperature at the inlet and outlet of the drying tower were 335°C and 205°C respectively,the moisture content of drying products was only 0.05%. The content of HCl in the flue gas at the inlet and outlet of the drying tower were 55mg/L and 195mg/L respectively, the mass fractions of Cl removal and Cl volatilization in desulfurization wastewater were 87.7% and 12.3% respectively. The increase of Cl content in the dried products had little effect on the utilization of fly ash.

Abstract:The mechanisms of SO_2 capture by spraying slurry droplet were investigated in pilot-scale apparatus of double circulating fluidized bed-flue gas suspension desulfurizationg. The mechanisms are applicable to the desulfurization manner with slurry spraying and the circulation of abundant ash containing unreacted sorbent. The SO_2 removals and drying performance of the unit are measured with the sorbent of Ca(OH)_2,CaO and CaCO_3 at Ca/S molar ratio 1-2.5, approaches to the adiabatic saturation temperature ranging from 2 to 20℃ in pilot-scale tests. On Ca(OH)_2,CaO and CaCO_3 the SO_2 removal efficiency is lower one by one, the difference between them is 5%, 35%. The SO_2 removal efficiency is proportional to the Ca/S increase and AAST decrease. The drying time of the slurry droplet is 1.5-2 s. the main amount of SO_2 is captured before the droplet drying.

Abstract:The advantages and disadvantages of the typical semidry flue gas desulfurization (FGD) processes are analyzed, and a novel semidry FGD process with multifluid alkaline spray generator is first proposed to improve the colliding contact efficiency between sorbent particles and spray water droplets, and to form a large amount of aqueous lime slurry. The experimental results show that the colliding contact efficiency between lime particles and water droplets in the prefix alkaline spray generator may reach about 70%, which is significantly higher than the colliding contact efficiency of 25% in duct sorbent injection. The SO2 removal efficiency can reach 64.5% when the Ca/S molar ratio is 1.5, the approach to the saturation temperature is 10.3 degrees C, and the flue gas residence time is 2.25 s. It is higher than that of in-duct sorbent injection under similar conditions, and the sorbent utilization is improved to 43%. Therefore, the FGD process with a prefix alkaline spray generator can greatly improve SO2 removal efficiency and sorbent utilization and it will be a new, simple and efficient semidry FGD process for industrial application in the future.

Abstract:The flue gas desulfurization reactor by spray drying adsorption plays a crucial role in the process of gas purification. This study employed the multi-phase particle-in-cell method to accurately model the three-dimensional motion of particles of different sizes in the flue gas desulfurization reactor. The double-film theory was utilized to simulate the heat and mass transfer processes of desulfurization slurry droplets. Additionally, this study conducted a comprehensive analysis of various factors affecting gas-solid flow and mass transfer processes, including flue gas inlet velocity and temperature, Ca/S molar ratio, slurry particle size, and slurry temperature. The results demonstrate that the simulated and experimental results are in good agreement, validating the reliability of the developed model. The axial mass fluxes of gas and particles exhibit contrasting distributions in the central part and near the wall, with the turbulent viscosity being particularly pronounced in the top nozzle region. The inlet velocity of flue gas has a limited effect on the axial mass flux of particles, whereas the Ca/S molar ratio exerts a more significant influence. Furthermore, the Ca/S molar ratio has a substantial impact on the spatial distribution of flue gas temperature. The inlet velocity of flue gas and slurry particle size are negatively and positively correlated with particle residence time, respectively. Based on the mass transfer characteristics, the reactor interior can be divided into three zones: a high-efficiency desulfurization zone, a low-efficiency desulfurization zone, and a partial desulfurization zone. For the investigated operating conditions, the desulfurization efficiency is most strongly influenced by the slurry particle size, followed by the flue gas inlet velocity, Ca/S molar ratio, flue gas inlet temperature, and slurry temperature.

Abstract:AbstractSulfur dioxide, which comes from the flue gas emitted by the steel and coal power industries, is extremely harmful to humans and the natural environment. Due to its high efficiency and economy, dry fixed-bed desulfurization technology and Ca-based adsorbents have attracted wide attention. In this paper, a detailed outline of the process of the fixed-bed reactor, performance indexes, economic value, recent research, and industrial applications of the dry fixed-bed desulfurization process was summarized. The classification and properties, preparation method, desulfurization mechanism, and influencing factors of Ca-based adsorbents were discussed. This review indicated the challenges in the commercialization of dry Ca-based fixed-bed desulfurization and demonstrated the possible solutions. It is beneficial to promote industrial application by improving the utilization efficiency of Ca-based adsorbent, reducing the amount of adsorbent and operation cost, and developing ideal regeneration methods.

Abstract:In order to improve the efficiency of flue gas desulphurization (FGD), the spray drying wet (semi-dry) process was experimentally investigated on a home (self-designed) experimental platform. The factors influencing desulphurization efficiency, such as the number of nozzles, the kinds of desulfurizers and additives, were examined. The results indicated that the desulphurization efficiency can be greatly improved by increasing the stages of nozzles i.e. the efficiency achieves the maximum when the slurry proportion by primary and secondary nozzle 60% : 40%, and is 15.2% higher for two-stage slurry-supply system than for single-stage system in the same condition. The decrease of flue temperature and SO2 removal take mainly place in slurry atomization region. Furthermore, addition of additives can also enhance desulphurization efficiency, and the efficiency increases linearly with additive concentration at lower than 0.8 g·L-1, and NaOH is more effective than NaCl.

Abstract:The mechanism and characteristics of various wet flue gas desulfurization (WFGD) technologies were reviewed. Lime/limestone system and sodium alkali may be utilized in single pass desulfurization process, but may cause secondary environmental pollution. For ammonia method, the key factor is the stabilization of the ammonia in the desulfurization solution. Alcohol-amine desulfurization and biodesulfurization methods need the regeneration of the solution in order to decrease losses and keep the performance of the solutions. The regeneration process of the desulfurization solutions containing sulfur compounds assisted by microorganism, as a new method, will represent the trend of development.

Abstract:In this study, a pilot-scale evaporation tower system was built to treat the desulfurization wastewater by spray evaporation. The distribution characteristics of Cl − in the wastewater evaporation process were investigated. Besides, the morphology and physicochemical property of solid evaporation products from desulfurization wastewater were analyzed. In addition, the emission characteristics of fine particulates were evaluated. The results indicated that the increase of salt content in desulfurization wastewater increased the mass concentrations of Cl − in three phases, but the proportions of it remained almost unchanged, which were about 10%, 55%, and 35% in the gas phase, outlet solid phase, and bottom solid phase respectively. The increase of flue gas temperature can improve the content of Cl − in the gas phase, while the increase of wastewater pH inhibited the formation of gaseous HCl. The solid evaporation products from desulfurization wastewater had a prismatic crystal structure, which mainly included the sulfate and chloride salts, and the main elements including O, Na, Mg, S, Cl, K, and Ca. Besides, the peak values of particle size distribution in the bottom solid phase and outlet solid phase were 7.67 and 0.32 μm, respectively. For the particulate matters in flue gas, the spray evaporation of desulfurization wastewater can reduce the particle concentration, promote particle agglomeration, reduce the number concentration of fine particles, and improve the removal effect of PM 10 . When the inlet particle concentration was 7.62 g/m 3 , it can reduce the particle concentration at the tower outlet to 4.59 g/m 3 and reduce the number and mass concentrations of PM 10 after ESP by about 43.8% and 36.8%.

Abstract:Limestone-gypsum wet flue gas desulfurization (WFGD) often produces a certain amount of wastewater with complex water quality and heavy metal pollution which should be treated properly before release. Spaying the desulfurization wastewater into flue duct and using exhausted flue gas heat for evaporation is a promising and economical technology for achieving zero wastewater discharge in thermal power plant. To enable a more in-depth understanding on evaporation of FGD wastewater spray, a visual wind tunnel test rig based on the atomized droplet laser measuring system was built to reveal the impact factors on droplet thermal-fluid behavior. The dominant impact factors such as compressed air pressure and flow rate in air-blast spray nozzle, hot air temperature and velocity in the evaporation tunnel were analyzed to discuss the droplet size distribution and evaporation performance through alternating operate condition. A discrete mathematical model that combines both Eulerian and Lagrangian framework was established to validate the experiment result. It is concluded that introducing high pressure compressed air into the nozzle can contribute to the dispersion of droplets and enhance the evaporation rate. Proper flow rate in spray nozzle is required to avoid incomplete droplets evaporation. Air temperature and velocity in the evaporation tunnel apply positive impact on droplet size distribution and evaporation performance. Numerical simulation results of both dominant factors impact on evaporation behavior and total evaporation rate showed consistency with the experimental outcome.

Recent Innovations in Chemical Engineering (Formerly Recent Patents on Chemical Engineering)

Abstract:The removal of SO2 from flue gases is necessary for eliminating haze and controlling acid rain. However, developing the traditional wet and dry flue-gas desulfurization (FGD) is challenging due to the disposal issue of several byproducts. Manganese (Mn) orebased wet FGD possesses many advantages, including good desulfurization property, low cost, and high economic benefit. The environment friendliness and reusability of MnSO4 provide new ideas and methods in the future research direction of FGD. This review summarizes the background information of Mn ore slurry desulfurization, the desulfurization mechanism, the technological process, and the desulfurization devices. The role of operating parameters, such as temperature, liquid/solid ratio, pH, SO2 concentration, and particle size, in the desulfurization efficiency and manganese leaching rate are also discussed. The temperature (20°C-80°C) has exerted little effect on the desulfurization efficiency, whereas a low pH value is beneficial for SO2 removal. Moreover, a low inlet SO2 concentration and small particle size are beneficial for SO2 removal. The control and digestion techniques related to the byproduct (manganese dithionate) are also presented, along with the future development direction of Mn ore-based wet FGD in different industries.
