Abstract:The leakage inductance of a high-frequency transformer affects the operating mode and performance in dc/dc converters, so it is necessary to calculate the leakage inductance accurately. In the existing analytical calculation methods of leakage inductance of high-frequency transformers with Litz wire winding, the nonarea-equivalent high-frequency analytical method is applied to calculate leakage inductance. However, the calculated leakage inductance value is lower than its actual value due to the neglect of the irregular region between turns. In order to improve the calculation accuracy, this article proposes an analytical calculation method of leakage inductance for the high-frequency transformer with Litz wire winding, which considers the irregular region between turns. The 2-D magnetic field distribution in the transformer window and attenuation caused by high-frequency effects on magnetic field energy are analyzed and applied in this proposed method, to take the energy stored in the irregular region between turns into account indirectly. Thus, the proposed analytical expression for leakage inductance is derived correspondingly. Finally, the accuracy of the proposed method is verified by simulations and experiments. The results indicate that the relative error of calculating leakage inductance can be reduced from 16.25% to 3.79% by the proposed method within a certain range of wire densities.

Abstract:The accurate calculation of frequency-dependent leakage inductance of high-frequency transformers is critical for the optimized design of power electronic transformers. The leakage inductance can be obtained through the magnetic energy, usually calculated by the phasor integral of the magnetic energy density in the literature. This article analyzes the difference between the module and the phasor integral based on frequency-domain energy and proposes to take the module integral of magnetic energy density as the periodic averaged magnetic energy. Furthermore, the closed-form formula of the leakage inductance is given accordingly. The modules under different frequencies correspond to the intrinsic constant magnetic densities. Thus, the proposed method has a better physical interpretation compared with the previous phasor integral method. The finite element method simulation and experimental results of five transformers are taken as benchmarks to compare the proposed method with the phasor integral method. The comparison shows that the proposed module integral method has satisfying effectiveness and accuracy in the whole frequency band for all the cases involving both noninterleaved and interleaved windings.
Calculation Method of Winding Eddy-Current Losses for High-Voltage Direct Current Converter Transformers

Abstract:In this paper, a correction method is introduced to make a more accurate calculation of winding eddy-current losses of high-voltage direct current (HVDC) converter transformer. The assumption that winding eddy-current losses of HVDC converter transformers follow the frequency with the exponent 2 proposed by IEC 61378-2 Std. is thought to be inappropriate and the skin effect should be taken into consideration. The frequency characteristic of winding eddy-current losses is proposed by analysing the distribution of magnetic flux in conductors, in which skin effect is taken into consideration. The correction method with a correction factor is then introduced to correct the assumption. To verify the validity of the correction method, a two-dimension axisymmetric finite element analysis of a HVDC converter transformer is conducted. The geometrical complexity of windings and electrical connection are fully taken into account, it is shown that the correction method shows a significant advantage. Influence of different methods is revealed by applying the actual non-sinusoidal load current and it is shown that the error of correction method is the least. At last, harmonic losses measurements are conducted on three coils to investigate the limits of the correction method.
A novel method to determine leakage inductance for internal fault analysis in power transformer

Abstract:Inductance calculation is essential for internal fault analysis and protective relay of a power transformer. A new model, including several important factors neglected in the previous ones is proposed to calculate the inductance of power transformers. One of the key factors involves the difference between leakage magnetic field distribution under normal operating condition and the one under fault conditions. We have shown that such a difference affects significantly the short circuit reactance or leakage inductance and other parameters of a power transformer. In the proposed model, the inductance of a faulty transformer is firstly calculated by an axially symmetric magnetic field and then modified according to the constraint of the ampere-turn balance. The comparisons between measured impedance and calculated impedance of a faulty transformer model show that our method, while flexible and convenient to use, provides sufficiently precise results in the internal fault analysis of the power transformer

Abstract:A simple and efficient model is proposed to detect and diagnose the internal short-circuit fault of a transformer.The winding's structure is preciously modeled for FEM.It is easy to be used for a transformer with internal turn-turn fault.Energy perturbation method is employed to calculate the equivalent circuit parameters of the transformer.With these parameters,state equations can be established to study the relationship among the terminal currents,flux and the fault locations.Through test of a transformer,it reveals that the method is reasonable and effective.

Abstract:Magnetic flux leakage and loss of a transformer reduce the energy conversion efficiency of the transformer, also cause abnormal temperature distribution of the transformer. Studying magnetic flux leakage and loss of a transformer through measurement is a challenging task due to the difficulty of measuring magnetic flux leakage and loss. The finite element calculation makes up for the difficulty of measuring magnetic flux leakage and loss, which is very important for analyzing the magnetic flux leakage loss of a transformer. Based on the actual parameters, a refined three-dimensional(3D) modeling of 220kV three-phase three-winding on load tap-changer oil immersed power transformer in operation is established. The field circuit coupling finite element models of tank and turret are carried out by using professional electromagnetic simulation software MAGNET. Through setting impedance boundary conditions to improve the calculation speed, the distribution of magnetic flux leakage and loss of the transformer under high and medium voltage rated operating conditions is obtained by simulation. The results show that using MAGNET field-circuit coupling analysis can be used to quickly and efficiently calculate and analyze transformer magnetic flux leakage and loss.
Evaluation of the Calculation Method for Stray Losses in Structural Parts of HVDC Converter Transformers

Abstract:Stray losses in structural parts are calculated separately during determining load losses of HVDC converter transformers, but the calculation method proposed by IEC 61378-2 standard shows significant difference from the experimental results. The nonlinearity, hysteresis losses, and frequency characteristic are thought as the sources of errors in this paper, and then an electromagnetic-circuit coupling FEM analysis is performed to investigate them. It is shown that the frequency characteristic of the stray losses is the major factor that causes the errors, and the material characteristic should be considered. The magnetic and nonmagnetic materials are suggested to be calculated separately.
AN INDUCTANCE CALCULATION MODEL OF POWER TRANSFORMER FOR INTERNAL FAULT ANALYSIS

Abstract:For the purpose of precious internal fault analysis and relay protection of the power transformer, some problems in the existing models are pointed out. The key problem is that the difference of the leakage magnetic field distribution between normal operation and fault condition has not been taken into account. Therefore, the original short circuit reactance or leakage inductance of the transformer can't be used to develop the model parameters of the faulty transformer. This paper presents a new method to determine the leakage inductance of a power transformer. Based on the principle of linear superposition of the leakage magnetic field, the leakage inductance of the faulty transformer is firstly calculated on the basis of the geometric dimensions of the windings by subdividing windings into several sections according to the fault location. Then, the obtained inductance matrix will be modified according to the concept that the sum of the ampere-turns of all harmonics in the transformer windings is equal to zero. The application of the proposed method has shown that the method has the flexibility and sufficient precision in the internal fault analysis.

Abstract:Algorithm to calculate leakage inductances of power transformer is proposed.Based on equivalent circuit equation,leakage inductances of power transformer with Y-Delta connection are estimated by least square method using line currents of Delta side directly and eliminating internal currents of windings in Delta side.Discrimination of leakage inductances in equivalent circuit equation and error of the algorithm are discussed.Leakage inductances can be identified effectively only when power system is in transient processes.And improved algorithm is proposed to enhance recognition precision of leakage inductances.Algorithm accuracy is verified by EMTP simulation.Result shows that leakage inductances estimated by proposed algorithm can distinguish inter fault status of transformer from a normal service operating status of transformer,which can act as criterions of transformer protection and has good project application prospect in the field of transformer protection.
FEA-based calculation of leakage inductance for high-voltage high-power E-core transformer

Abstract:A two-dimensional ERXP model is built for the gapless E-core transformer with rectangular interior column. Its ER model is built on the section perpendicular to the longest edge of magnetic core and its XP model on the section parallel to the longest edge. The rectangular section is then equivalent to a circular section with same area. The dimensions of ER or XR model are calculated while keep the magnetic resistance of its interior column equal to that of the actual transformer. The three dimensional magnetic field of actual transformer is equivalent to the weighted average of the simulated results of two models, based on which, the leakage inductance is figured out. Simulative results show that the energy of the leakage inductance is mainly concentrated between the primary and the secondary windings, consistent with the theoretical analysis. The leakage inductance calculated with the ERXP model is 7.25 μH, 4.6% lower than the measured leakage inductance(7.6 μH), better than the one dimensional analysis.
A Simple and Accurate Leakage Inductance Adjustment Method for Medium Frequency Transformer

Abstract:The leakage inductance of the medium frequency transformer would affect the power transmission capacity and efficiency of the solid-state transformer, and should be precisely adjusted. The paper proposed a method to adjust the leakage inductance by adjusting the winding arrangement. Compared with the traditional method by changing the distance between the primary and secondary windings or the number of winding turns, the proposed model considers the freedom of winding arrangement such as turn-to-turn distance that traditional methods often ignored. The paper gave the accurate adjustment interval and the method could achieve continuous adjustment of leakage inductance in a larger range. It also doesn't change other magnetic parameters, and is basically free to use at no cost. The accuracy and feasibility of the method were verified through simulation. In multiple cases, the theoretical adjustment method is with only 4.5% compared to simulations, and below 8.8% to all experiments.
Calculation Approach of Reluctance in the Magnetic Circuit of Transformer Employed to Convert into Equivalent Electric Circuit

Abstract:Purpose The theoretical method of converting the magnetic circuit into an electric circuit is mature, but the way to determine the inductances in the electric circuit is not reliable, especially for the core working in saturation status, and it is impossible to determine the inductances by the transformer terminal measurements, as the measurement information is not enough to determine a number of inductances. This paper aims to propose an approach of calculating the reluctances. Design/methodology/approach In this paper, an approach of calculating the reluctances is proposed based on the numerical simulation of magnetic field in transformer with different values of current excitation. The reluctance of a core segment or air region as a branch of magnetic circuit is obtained by the magnetic energy and magnetic flux. By this way, all the reluctances as function of flux can be determined, and then the inductances can be determined. The reluctances and equivalent electric circuit of three-phase integrative transformer is determined, and its validation is proved in the paper. Findings The single phase example shows that the proposed method has a good performances on analysis of the inrush current in deep saturation. The peak value of the inrush current derived from the proposed approach matches well with the results obtained by coupled circuit-FEM analysis, and the difference is about 4.8 per cent. For studies on dual models of single phase transformers, the leakage inductances have important effects on the peak value of the inrush current. The reluctances of three-phase transformer are calculated, and the equivalent circuit simulation results are slightly smaller than the coupled circuit-FEM simulation results. Originality/value Approach of calculating the reluctances based on the numerical simulation of magnetic field in transformer is proposed. The magnetic core and air space are divided into several segments, and the reluctance for each segment is calculated based on the energy in the region and the flux of the cross-sectional area. By applying various excitation currents, all the reluctances as function of flux can be determined, and then all the non-linear inductances including the non-linear leakage inductances are obtained. The proposed approach is reliable to determine a number of inductances in the dual electric circuit, especially for deep saturation status.

Abstract:Characteristics of variation of the leakage inductance of a transformer are revealed through detailed analysis of the inductance of a transformer T-equivalent circuit.Using the finite element method based professional software,Maxwell 3D,the characteristics of inductances in several iron core states(saturated and unsaturated) are studied and some qualitative analysis are performed.The results show that the more serious the saturation of iron core is,the smaller the magnitude of leakage inductance at source side will be.The more serious the saturation of iron core is,the larger the magnitude of leakage inductance at load side will be.The leakage inductance of transformer as a whole,which remains constant,is not related to the status of transformer's iron core.In this paper,using the concept of valid main flux,equivalent turns ratio in several iron core states has been studied,the theoretical influence and qualitative analysis of simulation results has been done.

Abstract:Accurate and fast calculation of frequency-dependent leakage inductance is critical for the optimization of the high-frequency transformer with Litz wire winding. The analytical method is widely used due to its high computation speed. However, its computation accuracy is limited due to the following factors. i) One-dimensional (1D) or two-dimensional magnetic field model (2D) has unsatisfying accuracy for the transformer with a rotationally asymmetric structure. ii) The skin and proximity effect factors based on the multilayer foil winding are inaccurate for the Litz wire winding in the calculation of frequency-dependent magnetic energy. This paper proposes a double-2D frequency-dependent leakage inductance model for the transformer with Litz wire winding. It uses the image method to calculate the 2D leakage magnetic field inside and outside the core window, respectively, which considers the rotationally asymmetric structure in leakage inductance calculation. The round conductor model is proposed for the frequency-dependent magnetic energy calculation. The single strand in a Litz wire is taken as the basic modeling object of the round conductor model, which is more detailed than the multilayer foil winding model for the Litz wire winding. The comparison between the experiment, FEM, state-of-the-art models and the proposed model is conducted for eight transformers with E-core, U-core, round or rectangular Litz wire winding. The proposed model shows satisfying computation accuracy in the whole frequency band. And the computational speed of the proposed model is 100 times that of the FEM.

Abstract:Accurate evaluation of the leakage inductance of high-frequency transformers is significant for improving the operating model and power transmission efficiency of isolated dc-dc converters. Compared with the conventional methods, the data-driven methods inspired by machine learning seem to be more advantageous for leakage inductance assessment. However, the complex structure of the litz-wire windings hinders the extraction of the simulation datasets, leading to challenges in the application of the data-driven methods. This article proposes a data-driven method that can efficiently extract FEM simulation datasets of high-frequency transformers with litz-wire windings. The litz-wire windings are homogenized to greatly reduce computational costs. Global sensitivity analysis and dimensionless processing are adopted to determine the feature parameters and to expand the applications, respectively. Expressions describing the frequency variation of the simulation data are derived. A double 2-D FEM model based on length factors is presented to illustrate the 3-D characteristic of leakage inductance. Moreover, to enhance the performance of regression analysis, an improved random forest algorithm is implemented in Python. Finally, the accuracy of the proposed method is verified by comparison with the measured four different transformer prototypes and current analytical methods.

Abstract:The leakage inductance of medium-frequency transformers (MFTs) significantly affects the operation and efficiency of isolated converters, which are one of the most important components in solid-state transformers, and should be accurately controlled or be minimized. This article proposes a general analytical model of leakage inductance based on the superposition theorem and Rogowski coefficients, taking nonideal geometric factors, such as the different heights of the primary and secondary winding in practical implementations, into account, with only less than 4% error compared to most 3-D finite element simulations and 7% to all experiments. Based on the proposed model, an optimization scheme to minimize the leakage inductance for typical winding structures through the adjustment of the winding arrangement is proposed and mathematically proved, which can reduce the leakage inductance by up to over 40% compared with the traditional concentrated arrangement, also validated in experiments. In addition, the optimization method does not need to redesign other magnetic parameters and is free to use at no cost.

Abstract:No-load magnetic flux leakage factor calculation is time-consuming using the finite element method. The magnetic circuit method was used with four different magnetic flux leakage paths of the permanent magnet motor taken into account to eliminate the inaccuracy due to the motor structure changes by determining the integral flux leakage region according to the motor structure size,with a small calculation amount. Simulation results with the magnetic circuit and the finite element methods show the accuracy of the proposed method with changing arc coefficient,air-gap length and magnet height. The method without complex finite element numerical calculation is convenient and suitable for the permanent magnet machine design and optimization.
