Abstract:The quantization of Yang-Mills field theories requires the introduction of a gauge fixing which leads to a violation of the local Gauss law described by the so-called Gauss operator. We discuss the local quantizations of Yang-Mills theories in terms of the possible Gauss operators, which are argued to have a more physical meaning than the gauge fixings. We focus the attention on the local quantizations that leave the global gauge group and a subgroup of local gauge transformations unbroken, such as the Feynman quantization of quantum electrodynamics, and show that in the non-Abelian case such properties cannot be realized together with Lorentz covariance; thus, quite generally, one cannot have the structural properties of the Feynman quantization of quantum electrodynamics. Abstract:A non-Abelian theory of fermions interacting with gauge bosons, the constrained system, is studied. The equations of motion for a singular system are obtained as total differential equations in many variables. The integrability conditions are investigated and the set of equations of motion is integrable. The Senjanovic and the canonical methods are used to quantize the system, and the integration is taken over the canonical phase space coordinates.

Abstract:We study the quantization of the electric charges of the gauge bosons, the Higgs bosons and the fermions in gauge theories. We investigate the intimate relation of the quantization of the electric charge with the spontaneous symmetry breaking, anomaly cancellation and Majorana mass of fermions. We discuss specific examples for the standard model and the SU(5) × U(1)Z model. We find that in these models the electric charges of particles are dynamically quantized.

Abstract:Two sets of phenomena peculiar to non-Abelian gauge theories are illustrated. The first concerns the existence of nonsingular potentials which generate the same field strength without being gauge-equivalent; a necessary condition for this ambiguity is obtained. The second exhibits the insufficiency of the cyclic identity in determining field strength-potential relations.

Abstract:Due to the complexity of the required numerical codes, many of the new formulations for the evolution of the gravitational fields in numerical relativity are not tested on binary evolutions. We introduce in this paper a new testing ground for numerical methods based on the simulation of binary neutron stars. This numerical setup is used to develop a new technique, the Hamiltonian relaxation (HR), that is benchmarked against the currently most stable simulations based on the BSSN method. We show that, while the length of the HR run is somewhat shorter than the equivalent BSSN simulation, the HR technique improves the overall quality of the simulation, not only regarding the satisfaction of the Hamiltonian constraint, but also the behavior of the total angular momentum of the binary. The latest quantity agrees well with post-Newtonian estimations for point-mass binaries in circular orbits.

Quantum Observables of Quantized Fluxes

Abstract:While it has become widely appreciated that defining (higher) gauge theories requires, in addition to ordinary phase space data, also "flux quantization" laws in generalized differential cohomology, there has been little discussion of the general rules, if any, for lifting Poisson-brackets of (flux-)observables and their quantization from traditional phase spaces to the resulting higher moduli stacks of flux-quantized gauge fields. In this short note, we present a systematic analysis of (i) the canonical quantization of flux observables in Yang-Mills theory and (ii) of valid flux quantization laws in abelian Yang-Mills, observing (iii) that the resulting topological quantum observables form the homology Pontrjagin algebra of the loop space of the moduli space of flux-quantized gauge fields. This is remarkable because the homology Ponrjagin algebra on loops of moduli makes immediate sense in broad generality for higher and non-abelian (non-linearly coupled) gauge fields, such as for the C-field in 11d supergravity, where it recovers the quantum effects previously discussed in the context of "Hypothesis H".

Quantization of Weyl invariant unimodular gravity with antisymmetric ghost fields

Abstract:The enforcement of the unimodularity condition in a gravity theory by means of a Lagrange multiplier leads, in general, to inconsistencies upon quantization. This is so, in particular, when the classic linear splitting of the metric between the background and quantum fields is used. To avoid the need of introducing such a Lagrange multiplier while using the classic linear splitting, we carry out the quantization of unimodular gravity with extra Weyl symmetry by using Becchi-Rouet-Stora-Tyutin (BRST) techniques. Here, two gauge symmetries are to be gauge-fixed: transverse diffeomorphisms and Weyl transformations. We perform the gauge-fixing of the transverse diffeomorphism invariance by using BRST transformations that involve antisymmetric ghost fields. We show that these BRST transformations are compatible with the BRST transformations needed to gauge-fix the Weyl symmetry, so that they can be combined in a set of transformations generated by a single BRST operator. Newton's law of gravitation is derived within the BRST formalism we put forward as well as the Slavnov-Taylor equation.

Novel knotted non-abelian gauge fields

Abstract:In analogy to null electromagnetic fields we define null YM fields. We show that the null non-abelian $SU(N)$ gauge fields admit a set of $2 N^2$ conserved "helicities". We derive null YM solutions that carry finite helicities by uplifting the abelian Hopfion solution and their generalizations. Another method that we implement is to deform YM solutions which do not carry helicities into ones that have nontrivial helicities. A nontrivial non-Abelian solution with helicities is found as a wave of infinite energy. We also discuss non-abelian generalizations of the Bateman parameterization for null abelian gauge fields.

It is argued here that the Heisenberg uncertainty principle is a necessary condition for gauge invariance in the 5-dimensional Kaluza-Klein theory.

Abstract:The gauge formalism in telepalallel gravity provides an interesting viewpoint to describe interactions according to an anholonomic observer's tetrad basis. Without going into assessing the complete viability of quantization in an early stage, this paper explores classical gravity within the framework of a classical-to-quantum bridge between the SU$(1, 3)$ Yang--Mills gauge formalism and the gauge-like treatment of teleparallel gravity. Specifically, the perturbed spacetime algebra with Weitzenböck connection can be assimilated to a local complexification based on the SU$(1,3)$ Yang--Mills theory, what we call hypercolour or, simply, colour. The formulation of the hypercolour dynamics is build by a translational gauge, as in the teleparallel gravities. In particular, this work analyses small perturbations of a metric decomposition related to the Wilson line and the Kaluza--Klein metric, but obtaining electrodynamics in four dimensions. The spacetime coordinates are now matrices representing elements of the $\mathfrak{su}(1,3)$ algebra. To make compatible the formulation of a coloured gravity with the Lorentz force and the Maxwell's equations, it is enough to define every energy potential origin as 0 in the event horizon instead of the classic zero potential at infinity. Under the coloured gravity framework, standard electromagnetism can be obtained as a particular abelian case.

Abstract:In axiomatic quantum field theory, the postulate of the uniqueness of the vacuum (a pure vacuum state) is independent of the other axioms and equivalent to the cluster decomposition property. The latter, however, implies a Coulomb or Yukawa attenuation of the interactions at growing distance, hence cannot accomodate the confining properties of the strong interaction. The solution of the Yang-Mills quantum theory given previously, uses an auxiliary field to incorporate Gauss's law, and demonstrates the existence of two separate vacua, the perturbative and the confining vacuum, therefore a mixed vacuum state, deriving confinement, as well as the related, expected properties of the strong interaction. The existence of multiple vacua is, in fact, expected by the axiomatic, algebraic quantum field theory, via the decomposition of the vacuum state to eigenspaces of the auxiliary field. The general vacuum state is a mixed quantum state and the cluster decomposition property does not hold. Because of the energy density difference between the two vacua, the physics of the strong interactions does not admit a Lagrangian description. I clarify the above remarks related to the previous solution of the Yang-Mills interaction, and conclude with some discussion, a criticism of a related mathematical problem, and some tentative comments regarding the spin-2 case.

Abstract:By gauging a higher-moment polynomial degree global symmetry and a discrete charge conjugation (i.e., particle-hole) symmetry coupled to matter fields (two symmetries mutually noncommutative), we derive a class of higher-rank tensor non-Abelian gauge field theory with dynamically gauged fractonic matter fields: Non-Abelian gauged fractons interact with a hybrid class of higher-rank (symmetric or generic nonsymmetric) tensor gauge theory and antisymmetric tensor topological field theory, generalizing work by Wang and Xu (arXiv:1909.13879) and by Wang, Xu, and Yau (arXiv:1911.01804). On anomalies and gauging of U(1) non-invertible symmetries in 4d QED

Abstract:In this work we propose a way to promote the anomalous axial U(1) transformations to exact non-invertible U(1) symmetries. We discuss the procedure of coupling the non-invertible symmetry to a (dynamical or background) gauge field. We show that as part of the gauging procedure, certain constraints are imposed to make the gauging consistent. The constraints emerge naturally from the form of the non-invertible U(1) conserved current. In the case of dynamical gauging, this results in new type of gauge theories we call non-invertible gauge theories: These are gauge theories with additional constraints that cancel the would-be gauge anomalies. By coupling to background gauge fields, we can discuss 't-Hooft anomalies of non-invertible symmetries. We show in an example that the matching conditions hold but they are realized in an unconventional way. Turning on non-trivial background for the non-invertible gauge field changes the vacuum even when the symmetry is not broken and the background is very weak. The anomalies are then matched by the appearance of solitons in the new vacuum.

Abstract:Non-Abelian gauge fields are versatile tools for synthesizing topological phenomena, but have so far been mostly studied in Hermitian systems, where gauge flux has to be defined from a closed loop in order for vector potentials, whether Abelian or non-Abelian, to become physically meaningful. We show that this condition can be relaxed in non-Hermitian systems by proposing and studying a generalized Hatano-Nelson model with imbalanced non-Abelian hopping. Despite lacking gauge flux in one dimension, non-Abelian gauge fields create rich non-Hermitian topological consequences. With SU(2) gauge fields, the braiding degrees that can be achieved are twice the highest hopping order of a lattice model, indicating the utility of spinful freedom to attain high-order nontrivial braiding. At both ends of an open chain, non-Abelian gauge fields lead to the simultaneous presence of non-Hermitian skin modes, whose population can be effectively tuned near the exceptional points. Generalizing to two dimensions, the gauge invariance of Wilson loops can also break down in non-Hermitian lattices dressed with non-Abelian gauge fields. Toward realization, we present a concrete experimental proposal for non-Abelian gauge fields in non-Hermitian systems via the synthetic frequency dimension of a polarization-multiplexed fiber ring resonator. https://doi.org/10.1103/PhysRevLett.132.043804 © 2024 American Physical Society

A new look at the Dirac quantization condition

Abstract:The angular momentum of any quantum system should be {\it unambiguously} quantized. We show that such a quantization fails for a pure Dirac monopole due to a previously overlooked field angular momentum from the monopole-electric charge system coming from the magnetic field of the Dirac string and the electric field of the charge. Applying the point-splitting method to the monopole-charge system yields a total angular momentum which obeys the standard angular momentum algebra, but which is gauge {\it variant}. In contrast it is possible to properly quantize the angular momentum of a topological 't Hooft-Polyakov monopole plus charge. This implies that pure Dirac monopoles are not viable -- only 't Hooft-Polyakov monopoles are theoretically consistent with angular momentum quantization and gauge invariance.
