Abstract:The angular momentum of any quantum system should be {\it unambiguously} quantized. We show that such a quantization fails for a pure Dirac monopole due to a previously overlooked field angular momentum from the monopole-electric charge system coming from the magnetic field of the Dirac string and the electric field of the charge. Applying the point-splitting method to the monopole-charge system yields a total angular momentum which obeys the standard angular momentum algebra, but which is gauge {\it variant}. In contrast it is possible to properly quantize the angular momentum of a topological 't Hooft-Polyakov monopole plus charge. This implies that pure Dirac monopoles are not viable -- only 't Hooft-Polyakov monopoles are theoretically consistent with angular momentum quantization and gauge invariance.

What problem does this paper attempt to address?
The problem that this paper attempts to solve is the dilemma that the angular momentum of pure Dirac monopoles cannot be correctly quantified within the framework of quantum mechanics. Specifically, the paper points out that when considering the contribution of the string (Dirac string) in the charge - Dirac monopole system to the field angular momentum, the total field angular momentum is no longer the standard angular momentum algebra and exhibits gauge - dependence (gauge variant). This means that pure Dirac monopoles encounter obstacles during the quantization process because their total angular momentum can neither meet the requirements of angular momentum algebra nor maintain gauge invariance. The paper makes a comparative analysis of Dirac monopoles and 't Hooft - Polyakov monopoles. The latter has no string singularity, thus avoiding the problem of having to impose conditions on the charge wave function to make the string "invisible". The total angular momentum of 't Hooft - Polyakov monopoles not only satisfies the angular momentum algebra but can also be correctly quantized, directly leading to the establishment of the Dirac quantization condition without referring to the wave function. Therefore, the main conclusion of the paper is that, from the perspective of angular momentum quantization, only 't Hooft - Polyakov - type monopoles are theoretically consistent, which provides a guiding direction for future monopole searches, that is, the search should focus on finding 't Hooft - Polyakov monopoles rather than point - like Dirac monopoles.
