Abstract:The electric charge of the quantization condition of Dirac's monopole may have any value, we are not obliged to identify it with the electron charge. Consequently the magnetic charge of the monopole is quite arbitrary: Dirac's monopole is a mere object of science fiction.

Abstract:The angular momentum of any quantum system should be {\it unambiguously} quantized. We show that such a quantization fails for a pure Dirac monopole due to a previously overlooked field angular momentum from the monopole-electric charge system coming from the magnetic field of the Dirac string and the electric field of the charge. Applying the point-splitting method to the monopole-charge system yields a total angular momentum which obeys the standard angular momentum algebra, but which is gauge {\it variant}. In contrast it is possible to properly quantize the angular momentum of a topological 't Hooft-Polyakov monopole plus charge. This implies that pure Dirac monopoles are not viable -- only 't Hooft-Polyakov monopoles are theoretically consistent with angular momentum quantization and gauge invariance.

Abstract:In most introductory courses on electrodynamics, one is taught the electric charge is quantised but no theoretical explanation related to this law of nature is offered. Such an explanation is postponed to graduate courses on electrodynamics, quantum mechanics and quantum field theory, where the famous Dirac quantisation condition is introduced, which states that a single magnetic monopole in the Universe would explain the electric charge quantisation. Even when this condition assumes the existence of a not-yet-detected magnetic monopole, it provides the most accepted explanation for the observed quantisation of the electric charge. However, the usual derivation of the Dirac quantisation condition involves the subtle concept of an "unobservable" semi-infinite magnetised line, the so-called "Dirac string," which may be difficult to grasp in a first view of the subject. The purpose of this review is to survey the concepts underlying the Dirac quantisation condition, in a way that may be accessible to advanced undergraduate and graduate students. Some of the discussed concepts are gauge invariance, singular potentials, single-valuedness of the wave function, undetectability of the Dirac string and quantisation of the electromagnetic angular momentum. Five quantum-mechanical and three semi-classical derivations of the Dirac quantisation condition are reviewed. In addition, a simple derivation of this condition involving heuristic and formal arguments is presented.

Abstract:A quick way of arriving at the Dirac quantization condition between electric and magnetic charges is to require that the electromagnetic field angular momentum of a Thomson dipole (a magnetic monopole and an electric charge) equal some integer multiple of the fundamental unit of quantum mechanical angular momentum, ℏ/2. Applying this same type of argument to the electromagnetic field angular momentum carried by a magnetic dipole–electric charge system leads to an infinite number of different quantization conditions, and an apparent incompatibility between quantum mechanics and the dipole–charge system. However, a more careful analysis shows that the particle plus field angular momentum of this system does satisfy the standard angular momentum commutation relationships and is therefore a good quantum mechanical angular momentum. This emphasizes that caution must be taken when applying such semiclassical quantization arguments. Finally, a possible connection between this dipole–charge field angular momentum and the nucleon spin crisis is given.

On the charge density and asymptotic tail of a monopole

Abstract:We propose a new definition for the abelian magnetic charge density of a non-abelian monopole, based on zero-modes of an associated Dirac operator. Unlike the standard definition of the charge density, this density is smooth in the core of the monopole. We show that this charge density induces a magnetic field whose expansion in powers of 1/r agrees with that of the conventional asymptotic magnetic field to all orders. We also show that the asymptotic field can be easily calculated from the spectral curve. Explicit examples are given for known monopole solutions.

Abstract:We consider the loop quantization of Maxwell theory. A quantization of this type leads to a quantum theory in which the fundamental excitations are loop-like rather than particle-like. Each such loop plays the role of a quantized Faraday's line of electric flux. We find that the quantization depends on an arbitrary choice of a parameter e that carries the dimension of electric charge. For each value of e an electric charge that can be contained inside a bounded spatial region is automatically quantized in units of hbar/4*pi*e. The requirement of consistency with the quantization of electric charge observed in our Universe fixes a value of the, so far arbitrary, parameter e of the theory. Finally, we compare the ambiguity in the choice of parameter e with the beta-ambiguity that, as pointed by Immirzi, arises in the loop quantization of general relativity, and comment on a possible way this ambiguity can be fixed.

Abstract:In a previous paper, we found an extension of the N-dimensional Lorentz generators that partially restores the closed operator algebra in the presence of a Maxwell field, and is conserved under system evolution. Generalizing the construction found by Berard, Grandati, Lages and Mohrbach for the angular momentum operators in the O(3)-invariant nonrelativistic case, we showed that the construction can be maximally satisfied in a three dimensional subspace of the full Minkowski space; this subspace can be chosen to describe either the O(3)-invariant space sector, or an O(2,1)-invariant restriction of spacetime. When the O(3)-invariant subspace is selected, the field solution reduces to the Dirac monopole field found in the nonrelativistic case. For the O(2,1)-invariant subspace, the Maxwell field can be associated with a Coulomb-like potential on spacetime, similar to that used by Horwitz and Arshansky to obtain a covariant generalization of the hydrogen-like bound state. In this paper we elaborate on the generalization of the Dirac monopole to N-dimensions.

Abstract:Dirac's formulation of magnetic monopoles is shown to be equivalent to Maxwell theory coupled to 2-form gauge fields so that it has a local 1-form symmetry, with the 2-form gauge fields given in terms of the 2-form current densities associated with the Dirac strings. The field equations of Dirac's theory do not depend on the positions of the Dirac strings provided that they do not intersect the worldlines of any electrically charged particles; this constraint is called the Dirac veto. It is shown that Dirac's action is independent of the positions of the Dirac strings and that this corresponds a local 1-form symmetry. The electric and magnetic 1-form symmetries have a mixed anomaly, and the Dirac veto is shown to correspond to a restriction to gauge transformations for which the anomaly vanishes. The extension to $p$-form gauge fields in d-dimensions coupled to charged branes is discussed, together with the possibility of cancelling the anomaly by embedding in a higher-dimensional theory and so avoiding the veto.

Abstract:It is well known that a magnetic monopole-electric charge system carries an angular momentum in its electromagnetic fields. Here we show that in the Dirac string formulation of magnetic charge the monopole-electric charge system also carries a momentum in its electromagnetic fields. This overlooked field momentum arises from the Coulomb electric field of the electric charge and the solenoidal magnetic field of the Dirac string. This implies that the monopole-charge system must either: (i) carry a ``hidden momentum" in the string, indicating that the string is real, or (ii) that the monopole-charge system violates the center-of-energy theorem. The overall conclusion is that the Dirac monopole with a {\it regulated} Dirac string is not a true monopole, and is not even a good effective description for topological monopoles ({\it e.g.} the 't Hooft-Polyakov monopole outside the core).

Abstract:We reconsider the problem of electrically charged, massless fermions scattering off magnetic monopoles. The interpretation of the outgoing states has long been a puzzle as, in certain circumstances, they necessarily carry fractional quantum numbers. We argue that consistency requires such outgoing particles to be attached to a topological co-dimension 1 surface, which ends on the monopole. This surface cannot participate in a 2-group with the magnetic 1-form symmetry and is often non-invertible. Equivalently, the outgoing radiation lies in a twisted sector and not in the original Fock space. The outgoing radiation therefore not only carries unconventional flavor quantum numbers, but is often trailed by a topological field theory. We exemplify these ideas in the 1+1 dimensional, chiral 3450 model which shares many of the same features. We comment on the effects of gauge field fluctuations on the lowest angular momentum fermion scattering states in the presence of a magnetic monopole. While, to leading order, these zero modes can penetrate into the monopole core, in the full theory some of the zero modes are lifted and develop a small centrifugal barrier. The dynamics of the zero modes is that of a multi-flavor Schwinger model with a space-dependent gauge coupling. Symmetries and anomalies constrain the fate of the pseudo-zero modes.

Dirac fermions with electric dipole moment and position-dependent mass in the presence of a magnetic field generated by magnetic monopoles

Abstract:In this paper, we determine the bound-state solutions for Dirac fermions with electric dipole moment (EDM) and position-dependent mass (PDM) in the presence of a radial magnetic field generated by magnetic monopoles. To achieve this, we work with the (2+1)-dimensional (DE) Dirac equation with nonminimal coupling in polar coordinates. Posteriorly, we obtain a second-order differential equation via quadratic DE (simplified by a similarity transformation). Solving this differential equation through a change of variable and the asymptotic behavior, we obtain a generalized Laguerre equation. From this, we obtain the bound-state solutions of the system, given by the two-component Dirac spinor and by the relativistic energy spectrum. So, we note that such spinor is written in terms of the generalized Laguerre polynomials, and such spectrum (for a fermion and an antifermion) is quantized in terms of the radial and total magnetic quantum numbers $n$ and $m_j$, and explicitly depends on the EDM $d$, PDM parameter $\kappa$, magnetic charge density $\lambda_m$, and on the spinorial parameter $s$. In particular, the quantization is a direct result of the existence of $\kappa$ (i.e., $\kappa$ acts as a kind of ``external field or potential''). Besides, we discuss in detail the characteristics of the spectrum as well as graphically analyze the behavior of the spectrum as a function of $\kappa$ and $\lambda_m$ for three different values of $n$ (ground state and the first two excited states).

Abstract:Dirac showed that the existence of one magnetic pole in the universe could offer an explanation of the discrete nature of the electric charge. Magnetic poles appear naturally in most grand unified theories. Their discovery would be of greatest importance for particle physics and cosmology. The intense experimental search carried thus far has not met with success. In order to understand this lack of success we studied monopolium a monopole anti-monopole bound state with properties very different from monopoles in which monopoles could be hiding. In here, we propose another mechanism, namely that magnetic poles bind deeply with some neutral states hiding in this way some of the properties of the free monopoles. We study different scenarios of these systems and analyze their detectability. In particular, one scenario is very interesting because it leads to a light state, an analog of an electron with magnetic instead of electric charge, which we call magnetron.

Abstract:We show that magnetic monopoles appear naturally in granular quantum matter. Their condensation leads to a new state of matter, superinsulation, in which Cooper pairs are bound into purely electric pions by strings of electric flux. These electric flux tubes, the dual of Abrikosov vortices, prevent the separation of charge–hole pairs, thereby causing an infinite resistance, even at finite temperatures, the dual behaviour of superconductors. We will discuss the electric Meissner effect, asymptotic freedom and their measurements and describe the recent direct detection of a linear, confining potential by dynamic relaxation experiments. Finally, we consider dyons, excitations carrying both a magnetic and an electric charge, and show that a condensate of such dyons leads to a possible solution of the mysteries of the pseudogap state of high-Tc cuprates.

Abstract:Using the ideas developed in a previous paper which are borrowed from the mathematics of fibre bundles, it is shown that the wave function ψ of a particle of charge Ze around a Dirac monopole of strength g should be regarded as a section. The section is without discontinuities. Thus the monopole does not possess strings of singularities in the field around it. The eigensections of the angular momentum operators are monopole harmonics which are explicitly exhibited.

Abstract:We discuss the Abelian and non-Abelian monopoles which could exist in condensed matters. We show how the Dirac monopole can be regularized by the charge screening, and argue that the Dirac monopole of mass of hundred meVs could exist in dielectric condensed matters. Moreover, we generalize this result to non-Abelian condensed matters to show the existence of the non-Abelian monopole configuration in two-gap condensed matters, and present explicit monopole solutions.
