Abstract:The angular momentum of any quantum system should be {\it unambiguously} quantized. We show that such a quantization fails for a pure Dirac monopole due to a previously overlooked field angular momentum from the monopole-electric charge system coming from the magnetic field of the Dirac string and the electric field of the charge. Applying the point-splitting method to the monopole-charge system yields a total angular momentum which obeys the standard angular momentum algebra, but which is gauge {\it variant}. In contrast it is possible to properly quantize the angular momentum of a topological 't Hooft-Polyakov monopole plus charge. This implies that pure Dirac monopoles are not viable -- only 't Hooft-Polyakov monopoles are theoretically consistent with angular momentum quantization and gauge invariance.

Abstract:Dirac's conjecture, that secondary first-class constraints generate transformations that do not change the physical system's state, has various counterexamples. Since no matching gauge conditions can be imposed, the Dirac bracket cannot be defined, and restricting the phase space first and then quantizing is an inconsistent procedure. The latter observation has discouraged the study of systems of this kind more profoundly, while Dirac's conjecture is assumed generally valid. We point out, however, that secondary first-class constraints are just initial conditions that do not imply Poisson's bracket modification, and we carry out the quantization successfully by imposing these constraints on the initial state of the wave function. We apply the method to two Dirac's conjecture counterexamples, including Cawley's iconical system.

Abstract:We study the problem of canonical quantization of classical scalar and Dirac field theories in the finite volumes respectively in this paper. Unlike previous studies, we work in a completely discrete version. We discretize both the space and time variables in variable steps and use the difference discrete variational principle with variable steps to obtain the equations of motion and boundary conditions as well as the conservation of energy in discrete form. For the case of classical scalar field, the quantization procedure is simpler since it does not contain any intrinsic constraint. We take the boundary conditions as primary Dirac constraints and use the Dirac theory to construct Dirac brackets directly. However, for the case of classical Dirac field in a finite volume, things are complex since, besides boundary conditions, it contains intrinsic constraints which are introduced by the singularity of the Lagrangian. Furthermore, these two kinds of constraints are entangled at the spatial boundaries. In order to simplify the process of calculation, we calculate the final Dirac brackets in two steps. We calculate the intermediate Dirac brackets by using intrinsic constraints. And then, we obtain the final Dirac brackets by bracketing the boundary conditions. Our studies show that we can not only construct well-defined Dirac brackets at each discrete space-time lattice but also keep the conservation of energy discretely at the same time.

Abstract:The importance of discreteness of electron charge for mesoscopic electric circuit is addressed. A quantization of the circuit in accord with the discreteness of electric charges is proposed, and a Schrödinger equation in ‘charge representation’ is obtained. The Schrödinger equation is turned to be Mathieu equation in ‘current representation’, the wavefunction and energy spectrum can be solved exactly. The WKB solutions of the energy levels for the ground state and the excited states are given.

Abstract:In a previous paper, we found an extension of the N-dimensional Lorentz generators that partially restores the closed operator algebra in the presence of a Maxwell field, and is conserved under system evolution. Generalizing the construction found by Berard, Grandati, Lages and Mohrbach for the angular momentum operators in the O(3)-invariant nonrelativistic case, we showed that the construction can be maximally satisfied in a three dimensional subspace of the full Minkowski space; this subspace can be chosen to describe either the O(3)-invariant space sector, or an O(2,1)-invariant restriction of spacetime. When the O(3)-invariant subspace is selected, the field solution reduces to the Dirac monopole field found in the nonrelativistic case. For the O(2,1)-invariant subspace, the Maxwell field can be associated with a Coulomb-like potential on spacetime, similar to that used by Horwitz and Arshansky to obtain a covariant generalization of the hydrogen-like bound state. In this paper we elaborate on the generalization of the Dirac monopole to N-dimensions.

Abstract:A four states phase diagram for protein folding as a function of temperature and solvent quality is derived from an improved 2-d lattice model taking into account the temperature dependence of the hydrophobic effect. The phase diagram exhibits native, globule and two coil-type regions. In agreement with experiment, the model reproduces the phase transitions indicative of both warm and cold denaturations. Finally, it predicts transitions between the two coil states and a critical point.

Abstract:The quantization of a massive spin- 1/2 field that satisfies the Klein-Gordon equation is studied. Abstract:Linac-ring analogues of the LHC and VLHC based standard type ep collider proposals are discussed. It is shown that sufficiently high luminosities can be obtained with TESLA-like linacs, whereas essential modifications are required for CLIC technology. The physics search potential of proposed ep colliders is demonstrated using pair production of heavy quarks as an example.

Canonical quantization of the dark Dirac field and time asymmetry

Abstract:We perform canonical quantization of the single-component, spin-zero field that was introduced by Dirac in 1971 and recently suggested as a candidate for dark matter by Bogomolny. The massive and massless cases are treated separately. Since in the massive case only positive-frequency modes are normalizable and regarded as physical, the mode expansion for the field involves annihilation operators only, making the quantization procedure particularly simple. The corresponding Hamiltonian turns out to be unambiguous, with no need for normal ordering. The positive-energy requirement imposed on the second-quantized system leads to equally acceptable Bose and Fermi choices for particle statistics. This suggests supersymmetric extension of original Dirac's theory in which Bose and Fermi single-component positive-energy Dirac fields are combined into a doublet whose members can transform into each other. Our model includes a Landau-Anderson-Higgs type potential which allows spontaneous selection of the universe with a given bose-to-fermi ratio of the positive-energy Dirac particles. The bosonic sector of proposed extension hints at the possibility of a dark, background Bose-Einstein condensate that endows the universe with its cosmological temporal asymmetry. In the massless case of Dirac's original theory, we explore the possibility of allowing the field expansion to involve both positive- and negative-frequency modes. This leads to the anticommutation relations for creation and annihilation operators associated with the negative energy solutions, resulting in supersymmetric behavior of the single-component field in the ultrarelativistic limit. Finally, we speculate on the possibility for the positive-energy Dirac particles to obey some exotic (such as non-abelian, Clifford) statistics in which the particles are neither created nor destroyed.

Abstract:In most introductory courses on electrodynamics, one is taught the electric charge is quantised but no theoretical explanation related to this law of nature is offered. Such an explanation is postponed to graduate courses on electrodynamics, quantum mechanics and quantum field theory, where the famous Dirac quantisation condition is introduced, which states that a single magnetic monopole in the Universe would explain the electric charge quantisation. Even when this condition assumes the existence of a not-yet-detected magnetic monopole, it provides the most accepted explanation for the observed quantisation of the electric charge. However, the usual derivation of the Dirac quantisation condition involves the subtle concept of an "unobservable" semi-infinite magnetised line, the so-called "Dirac string," which may be difficult to grasp in a first view of the subject. The purpose of this review is to survey the concepts underlying the Dirac quantisation condition, in a way that may be accessible to advanced undergraduate and graduate students. Some of the discussed concepts are gauge invariance, singular potentials, single-valuedness of the wave function, undetectability of the Dirac string and quantisation of the electromagnetic angular momentum. Five quantum-mechanical and three semi-classical derivations of the Dirac quantisation condition are reviewed. In addition, a simple derivation of this condition involving heuristic and formal arguments is presented.

Abstract:We study the Fock quantization of a free Dirac field in 2+1-dimensional backgrounds which are conformally ultrastatic, with a time-dependent conformal factor. As it is typical for field theories, there is an infinite ambiguity in the Fock representation of the canonical anticommutation relations. Different choices may lead to unitarily inequivalent theories that describe different physics. To remove this ambiguity one usually requires that the vacuum be invariant under the unitary transformations that implement the symmetries of the equations of motion. However, in non-stationary backgrounds, where time translation is not a symmetry transformation, the requirement of vacuum invariance is in general not enough to fix completely the Fock representation. We show that this problem is overcome in the considered scenario by demanding, in addition, a unitarily implementable quantum dynamics. The combined imposition of these conditions selects a unique family of equivalent Fock representations. Moreover, one also obtains an essentially unique splitting of the time variation of the Dirac field into an explicit dependence on the background scale factor and a quantum evolution of the corresponding creation and annihilation operators.

Dipole symmetry breaking and fractonic Nambu-Goldstone mode

Abstract:We introduce a family of quantum field theories for fields carrying monopole and dipole charges. In contrast to previous realizations, fields have quadratic two-derivative kinetic terms. The dipole symmetry algebra is realized in a discretized internal space and connected to the physical space through a background gauge field. We study spontaneous symmetry breaking of dipole symmetry in 1+1 dimensions in a large-$N$ limit. The trivial classical vacuum is lifted by quantum corrections into a vacuum which breaks dipole symmetry while preserving monopole charge. By means of a Hubbard-Stratonovich transformation, heat-kernel and large-$N$ techniques, we compute the effective action for the low-energy modes. We encounter a fractonic immobile Nambu-Goldstone mode whose dispersion characteristics avoid Coleman-Hohenberg-Mermin-Wagner theorem independently of the large-$N$ limit.

Abstract:In Westminster Abbey, in a nave near to Newton's monument, lies a memorial stone to Paul Dirac. The inscription on the stone includes the relativistic wave equation for an electron: the Dirac equation. At the turn of the 21st century, it was discovered that this eponymous equation was not simply the preserve of particle physics. The isolation of graphene by Andre Geim and Konstantin Novoselov in Manchester led to the exploration of a novel class of materials - Dirac materials - whose electrons behave like Dirac particles. While the mobility of these quasi-relativistic electrons is attractive from the perspective of potential ultrafast devices, it also presents a distinct challenge: how to confine Dirac particles so as to avoid making inherently leaky devices? Here we discuss the unconventional quantum tunnelling of Dirac particles, we explain a strategy to create bound states electrostatically, and we briefly review some pioneering experiments seeking to trap Dirac electrons.

Abstract:Geometrical interpretation on U(1) gage theory of Dirac monopole, introduced here from the line integral\cite{Brandt} form of vector potentials, shows the gauge representation be multi-valued. In this paper, we construct Euclidean form of U(1) gauge theory on Dirac monopole based on the geometrical interpretation, derive the Dirac quantization condition geometrically. Even several theoretical methods which leads to Dirac quantization $eg=l/2$ has been developed, these are only possible under the postulate that gauge representation is single-valued. Using the line integration representation of vector potential, we derived the gauge equation which satisfies under the `phase gauge transformation' ($\mathbf{A}\to\mathbf{A}'=\mathbf{A}, \ \psi\to\psi'=e^{ie\Lambda}\psi$), also showed that the Dirac quantization condition can be derived by the geometrical boundary condition on this gauge equation, without any supposing of canonical quantization condition. We finally explain geometrical meaning of constant phase of gauge and how the Dirac quantization holds single valued gauge representation.

A modest redirection of quantum field theory solves all current problems

Abstract:Standard quantization using, for example, path integration of field theory models, includes paths of momentum and field reach infinity in the Hamiltonian density, while the Hamiltonian itself remains finite. That fact causes considerable difficulties. In this paper, we represent $\pi(x)$ by $k(x)/\phi(x)$. To insure proper values for $\pi(x)$ it is necessary to restrict $0<|\phi(x)|<\infty$ as well as $0\leq|k(x)|<\infty$. Indeed that leads to Hamiltonian densities in which $\phi(x)^p$, where $p$ can be even integers between $4$ and $\infty$. This leads to a completely satisfactory quantization of field theories using situations that involve scaled behavior leading to an unexpected, $\hbar^2/\hat{\phi}(x)^2$ which arises only in the quantum aspects. Indeed, it is fair to claim that this symbol change leads to valid field theory quantizations.

Operators of quantum theory of Dirac's free field

Abstract:The quantum theory of free Dirac's massive fermions is reconstructed around the new conserved spin operator and its corresponding position one proposed initially by Pryce long time ago and re-defined recently with the help of a new spin symmetry and suitable spectral representations. [I. I. Cotăescu, Eur. Phys. J. C (2022) 82:1073]. This approach is generalized here defining the operator action in passive mode, associating to any integral operator in configuration representation a pair of integral operators acting directly on particle and antiparticle wave spinors in momentum representation instead on the mode spinors. This framework allows an effective quantization procedure giving a large set of one-particle operators with physical meaning as the spin and orbital parts of the isometry generators, the Pauli-Lubanski and position operators or other spin-type operators proposed so far. A special attention is paid to the operators which mix the particle and antiparticle sectors whose off-diagonal associated operators have oscillating terms producing zitterbevegung. The principal operators of this type including the usual coordinate operator are derived here for the first time. As an application, it is shown that an apparatus measuring these new observables may prepare and detect one-particle wave-packets moving uniformly without zitterbewegung or spin dynamics, spreading in time normally as any other relativistic even non-relativistic wave-packet.

A Mathematical Analysis of Dirac Equation Physics

Abstract:The paper analyzes time propagation of Dirac observables - using Heisenberg representation - in the light of various pseudodifferential operator algebras (cf. [Co3], [Co15], [Co16]). Our theory gives (i) a mechanical angular momentum (the spin), but also (ii) another real 3-vector, travelling with the particle, with magnetic properties (its motion guided by the magnetic field around it, but not in the proper relativistic way). The above is discussed for potentials vanishing at infinity. But we also look at a Dirac particle in the field of a plane polarized X-ray wave, trying to analyze the Compton effect. The propagations of energy and momentum (in the X-ray's direction) are coupled - they allow a joint asymptotic expansion with terms representing change of energy by $nh\nu$ and momentum by $nh\nu/c$, with n=0,1,2, ..., valid for large frequencies, i.e., large momentum coordinates. Possible interpretation: A collision of the electron-positron with 0, 1, 2, ... n Photons of energy $h\nu$, affecting a change of energy-momentum. Note, this does not require QFT.
