Abstract:We theoretically demonstrate nontrivial topological effects for a probe field in a Raman medium undergoing molecular modulation processes. The medium is driven by two noncollinear pump beams. We show that the angle between the pumps is related to an effective gauge potential and an effective magnetic field for the probe field in the synthetic space consisting of a synthetic frequency dimension and a spatial dimension. As a result of such an effective magnetic field, the probe field can exhibit a topologically protected one-way edge state in the synthetic space, as well as Landau levels which manifest as suppression of both diffraction and sideband generation. Our work identifies a previously unexplored route towards creating topological photonics effects and highlights an important connection between topological photonics and nonlinear optics.

Abstract:With current magnetic field shielding and high precision detection in dipolar spinor Bose-Einstein condensates, it is possible to experimentally detect the low or zero field nonsecular dipolar dynamics. Here we analytically investigate the zero-field nonsecular magnetic dipolar interaction effect, with an emphasis on magnetization dynamics in a spin-1 Bose-Einstein condensate under the single spatial mode approximation within the mean field theory. Due to the biaxial nature of the dipolar interaction, a novel resonance occurs in the condensate magnetization oscillation, contrast to the previous assumption of a conserved magnetization in strong magnetic fields. Furthermore, we propose a dynamical-decoupling detection method for such a resonance, which cancels the stray magnetic fields in experiments but restores the magnetization dynamics. Our results shed new lights on the dipolar systems and may find potential applications beyond cold atoms.

Abstract:Among the many far-reaching consequences of the potential existence of a magnetic monopole, it induces a topological zero mode in the Dirac equation, which was derived by Jackiw and Rebbi 48 years ago and has been elusive ever since. Here, we show that the monopole and multi-monopole solutions can be constructed in the band theory by gapping the three-dimensional Dirac points in hedgehog mass configurations. We then experimentally demonstrate such a monopole bound state in an optimized Dirac acoustic crystal structurally modulated in full solid angles. The monopole mode exhibits the optimal scaling behavior - whose modal spacing is inversely proportional to the cubic root of the modal volume. This work completes the kink-vortex-monopole zero-mode trilogy and paves the way for exploring higher-dimensional bulk-topological-defect correspondence.

Abstract:Multiple-component Bose-Einstein condensation has been observed in a magnetic field generated by a controllable magnetic quadrupole-Ioffe-configuration trap. Different distributions of atoms in spinor Bose-Einstein condensates are created by changing the time difference of switching-off current in quadrupole-Ioffe-configuration coils and bias coils of the magnetic trap. A simple analysis is carried out to explain some phenomena of the experiment.

Abstract:It is found that the effective Hamiltonian for nuclear rotation in a diatom is equivalent to that of a charged particle in a background magnetic-monopole field. In certain cases, half-integer orbital angular momentum or non-Abelian fields occur. Furthermore, the effects of magnetic-monopole-like gauge fields can be experimentally observed in spin-resonance experiments with variable magnetic fields.

Abstract:Artificial monopoles have been engineered in various systems, yet there has been no systematic study of the singular vector potentials associated with the monopole field. We show that the Dirac string, the line singularity of the vector potential, can be engineered, manipulated, and made manifest in a spinor atomic condensate. We elucidate the connection among spin, orbital degrees of freedom, and the artificial gauge, and show that there exists a mapping between the vortex filament and the Dirac string. We also devise a proposal where preparing initial spin states with relevant symmetries can result in different vortex patterns, revealing an underlying correspondence between the internal spin states and the spherical vortex structures. Such a mapping also leads to a new way of constructing spherical Landau levels, and monopole harmonics. Our observation provides insights into the behavior of quantum matter possessing internal symmetries in curved spaces.

Optically Induced Monopoles, Knots, and Skyrmions in Quantum Gases

Abstract:We propose, and theoretically analyze, a practical protocol for the creation of topological monopole configurations, quantum knots, and skyrmions in Bose--Einstein condensates by employing fictitious magnetic fields induced by the interaction of the atomic cloud with coherent light fields. It is observed that a single coherent field is not enough for this purpose, but instead we find incoherent superpositions of several coherent fields that introduce topological point charges. We numerically estimate the experimentally achievable strengths and gradients of the induced fictitious magnetic fields and find them to be adjustable at will to several orders of magnitude greater than those of the physical magnetic fields employed in previous experimental studies. This property together with ultrafast control of the optical fields paves the way for advanced engineering of topological defects in quantum gases.

Abstract:When two or more energy bands become degenerate at a singular point in the momentum space, such singularity, or ``Dirac points", gives rise to intriguing quantum phenomena as well as unusual material properties. Systems at the Dirac points can possess topological charges and their unique properties can be probed by various methods, such as transport measurement, interferometry and momentum spectroscopy. While the topology of Dirac point in the momentum space is well studied theoretically, observation of topological defects in a many-body quantum systems at Dirac point remain an elusive goal. Based on atomic Bose-Einstein condensate in a graphene-like optical honeycomb lattice, we directly observe emergence of quantized vortices at the Dirac point. The phase diagram of lattice bosons at the Dirac point is revealed. Our work provides a new way of generating vortices in a quantum gas, and the method is generic and can be applied to different types of optical lattices with topological singularity, especially twisted bilayer optical lattices.

Experimental Observation of Weyl Points

Abstract:The massless solutions to the Dirac equation are described by the so-called Weyl Hamiltonian. The Weyl equation requires a particle to have linear dispersion in all three dimensions while being doubly degenerate at a single momentum point. These Weyl points are topological monopoles of quantized Berry flux exhibiting numerous unusual properties. We performed angle-resolved microwave transmission measurements through a double-gyroid photonic crystal with inversion-breaking where Weyl points have been theoretically predicted to occur. The excited bulk states show two linear dispersion bands touching at four isolated points in the three-dimensional Brillouin zone, indicating the observation of Weyl points. This work paves the way to a variety of photonic topological phenomena in three dimensions.

Abstract:Monopoles and vortices are fundamental topological excitations that appear in physical systems spanning enormous scales of size and energy, from the vastness of the early universe to tiny laboratory droplets of nematic liquid crystals and ultracold gases. Although the topologies of vortices and monopoles are distinct from one another, under certain circumstances a monopole can spontaneously and continuously deform into a vortex ring with the curious property that monopoles passing through it are converted into anti-monopoles. However, the observation of such Alice rings has remained a major challenge, due to the scarcity of experimentally accessible monopoles in continuous fields. Here, we present experimental evidence of an Alice ring resulting from the decay of a topological monopole defect in a dilute gaseous 87Rb Bose-Einstein condensate. Our results, in agreement with detailed first-principles simulations, provide an unprecedented opportunity to explore the unique features of a composite excitation that combines the topological features of both a monopole and a vortex ring.
Synthetic monopole with half-integer magnetic charge in Bose-Einstein condensates

Abstract:We propose a scheme to create monopoles with half-integer magnetic charges in a spinful cold atom system. With a minimal monopole in the center, we derive the ground-state single-vortex wave function on the sphere and develop the vortex's kinematic equation in the presence of an external electromagnetic field. The vortex's trajectory is generally depicted by the precession of the system. We further formulate the inter-vortex interaction and build up a theory of multi-vortex dynamics in high-charge monopole systems. We predict the vortices'trajectory in the bi-vortex system and figure out stable vortex (line) patterns in multi-vortex systems. Our study provides deep insights into properties of magnetic monopoles and vortices and paves the way for experimental verification.

Abstract:We show that magnetic monopoles appear naturally in granular quantum matter. Their condensation leads to a new state of matter, superinsulation, in which Cooper pairs are bound into purely electric pions by strings of electric flux. These electric flux tubes, the dual of Abrikosov vortices, prevent the separation of charge–hole pairs, thereby causing an infinite resistance, even at finite temperatures, the dual behaviour of superconductors. We will discuss the electric Meissner effect, asymptotic freedom and their measurements and describe the recent direct detection of a linear, confining potential by dynamic relaxation experiments. Finally, we consider dyons, excitations carrying both a magnetic and an electric charge, and show that a condensate of such dyons leads to a possible solution of the mysteries of the pseudogap state of high-Tc cuprates.

Abstract:Bose-Einstein condensates have been prepared in long-lived metastable excited states. Two complementary types of metastable states were observed. The first is due to the immiscibility of multiple components in the condensate, and the second to local suppression of spin-relaxation collisions. Relaxation via re-condensation of non-condensed atoms, spin relaxation, and quantum tunneling was observed. These experiments were done with F=1 spinor Bose-Einstein condensates of sodium confined in an optical dipole trap.

Abstract:Monopoles play a center role in gauge theories and topological matter. There are two fundamental types of monopoles in physics: vector monopoles and tensor monopoles. Examples of vector monopoles include the Dirac monopole in three dimensions and Yang monopole in five dimensions, which have been extensively studied and observed in condensed matter or artificial systems. However, tensor monopoles are less studied, and their observation has not been reported. Here we experimentally construct a tunable spin-1 Hamiltonian to generate a tensor monopole and then measure its unique features with superconducting quantum circuits. The energy structure of a 4D Weyl-like Hamiltonian with threefold degenerate points acting as tensor monopoles is imaged. Through quantum-metric measurements, we report the first experiment that measures the Dixmier-Douady invariant, the topological charge of the tensor monopole. Moreover, we observe topological phase transitions characterized by the topological Dixmier-Douady invariant, rather than the Chern numbers as used for conventional monopoles in odd-dimensional spaces.
Vortex nucleations in spinor Bose condensates under localized synthetic magnetic fields

Abstract:Gauge fields are ubiquitous in modern quantum physics. In superfluids, quantized vortices can be induced by gauge fields. Here we demonstrate the first experimental observation of vortex nucleations in spinor Bose-Einstein Condensates under radially-localized synthetic magnetic fields. The associated gauge potentials $\vec{A}$ are azimuthal and created by light-induced spin-orbital-angular-momentum coupling, generating circulating azimuthal velocity fields $\propto \vec{p}-\vec{A}$ even when the canonical momentum $\vec{p}= 0$. A sufficiently large azimuthal velocity peaked near the condensate center results in a dynamically unstable localized excitation that initiates vortex nucleations. This excitation appears as a spontaneously-formed vortex-antivortex pair near the cloud center. Following the initially developed instability, the dynamics is governed by the asymmetry and dissipation, where the atomic orbital angular momentum evolves and can reach the value of the ground state. Our system exhibits dynamical and Landau instabilities and agrees reasonably with time-dependent Gross-Pitaevskii simulations.

Abstract:While sources of magnetic fields - magnetic monopoles - have so far proven elusive as elementary particles, several scenarios have been proposed recently in condensed matter physics of emergent quasiparticles resembling monopoles. A particularly simple proposition pertains to spin ice on the highly frustrated pyrochlore lattice. The spin ice state is argued to be well-described by networks of aligned dipoles resembling solenoidal tubes - classical, and observable, versions of a Dirac string. Where these tubes end, the resulting defect looks like a magnetic monopole. We demonstrate, by diffuse neutron scattering, the presence of such strings in the spin-ice Dy2Ti2O7. This is achieved by applying a symmetry-breaking magnetic field with which we can manipulate density and orientation of the strings. In turn, heat capacity is described by a gas of magnetic monopoles interacting via a magnetic Coulomb interaction.

Abstract:Initiated by the discovery of topological insulators, topologically non-trivial materials, more specifically topological semimetals and metals have emerged as new frontiers in the field of quantum materials. In this work, we perform a systematic measurement of EuMg2Bi2, a compound with antiferromagnetic transition temperature at 6.7 K, observed via electrical resistivity, magnetization and specific heat capacity measurements. By utilizing angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy in concurrence with first-principles calculations, we observe Dirac cones at the corner and the zone center of the Brillouin zone. From our experimental data, multiple Dirac states at G and K points are observed, where the Dirac nodes are located at different energy positions from the Fermi level. Our experimental investigations of detailed electronic structure as well as transport measurements of EuMg2Bi2 suggest that it could potentially provide a platform to study the interplay between topology and magnetism.

Abstract:In this article, we analyze a magnetic monopole in topological insulators. The monopole obtain a fractional electric charge because of the Witten effect. We consider this system with a microscopic view by adding the Wilson term to the ordinary Dirac Hamiltonian. The Wilson term yields the positive mass shift to the effective mass of the electrons, then the curved domain-wall is dynamically generated around the monopole. The zero-modes of the electrons are localized on the domain-wall, which can be identified as the source of the electric charge.

Abstract:Existence of the magnetic monopole is compatible with the fundamental laws of nature; however, this elusive particle has yet to be detected experimentally. We show theoretically that an electric charge near a topological surface state induces an image magnetic monopole charge due to the topological magneto-electric effect. The magnetic field generated by the image magnetic monopole may be experimentally measured, and the inverse square law of the field dependence can be determined quantitatively. We propose that this effect can be used to experimentally realize a gas of quantum particles carrying fractional statistics, consisting of the bound states of the electric charge and the image magnetic monopole charge.
