Abstract:> We prove that a gauge field can be determined locally by the field strength together with its gauge derivatives up to a certain order. It is shown, however, that in the non-Abelian case, two non-analytic gauge fields may be non-equivalent globally even when they are locally equivalent everywhere, no matter whatever the base manifold may be.

Abstract:This paper uses the background field method to calculate one-loop divergent corrections to the gauge field propa- gators in noncommutative U（1） gauge theory with scalar fields. It shows that for a massless scalar field, the gauge field propagators are renormalizable to θ 2 -order, but for a massive scalar field they are renormalizable only to θ-order.

Abstract:In this paper, we investigate two types of U(1)-gauge field theories on G_2-manifolds. One is the U(1)-Yang-Mills theory which admits the classical instanton solutions, we show that G_2-manifolds emerge from the anti-self-dual U(1) instantons, which is an analogy of Yang's result for Calabi-Yau manifolds. The other one is the higher-order U(1)-Chern-Simons theory as a generalization of Kähler-Chern-Simons theory, by suitable choice of gauge and regularization technique, we calculate the partition function under semiclassical approximation.

Abstract:The purpose of this paper is to investigate the gauge symmetry of classicalfield theories in integral formalism. A gauge invariant theory is defined interms of the invariance of the physical observables under the coordinatetransformations in principal bundle space. Through the detailed study on theproperty of non-Abelian parallel transportor under gauge transformations, weshow that it is not generally a two-point spinor, i.e. an operator to beaffected only by the gauge group elements at the two end points of the paralleltransport path, except for the pure gauge situation, and therefore the localgauge symmetry for non-Abelian models is found to be broken in non-perturbativedomain. However, an Abelian gauge theory is proved to be strictly invariantunder local gauge transformation, as it is illustrated by the invariance of theinterference pattern of electrons in Aharonov-Bohm effect. The related issuesof the phenomenon are discussed.

Abstract:Singularity of the gauge condition n⋅∂n⋅A=0 at n⋅k=0 is studied here. Such singularity is different from that in axial gauge and can not be regularized through analytical continuation method. It is proved that construction of continuous and well defined gauge links is obstructed by the Gribov ambiguity. Thus continuous gauge conditions which are free from the Gribov ambiguity are essential in studies on nonlocal gauge invariant objects. The Faddeev-Popov determinant of the gauge n⋅∂n⋅A=0, which is solved explicitly here, behaves like a δ-functional of gauge potentials once singularities in the functional integral is neglected and the length of the space along nμ direction tends to infinity. As a sequence, perturbation series in the gauge n⋅∂n⋅A=0 are equivalent to those in axial gauge for objects which are free from these singularities. However, the equivalence between the gauge n⋅∂n⋅A=0 and axial gauge is nontrivial for objects suffering from these singularities. It is also demonstrated through explicit calculations that the equivalence for long distance objects is not the case in general, especially lattice calculations show significant distinctions among the axial gauge n⋅A=0, the Landau gauge ∂⋅A=0 and the gauge n⋅∂n⋅A=0 for long distance objects.

Gauge choices and Entanglement Entropy of two dimensional lattice gauge fields

Abstract:In this paper, we explore the question of how different gauge choices in a gauge theory affect the tensor product structure of the Hilbert space in configuration space. In particular, we study the Coulomb gauge and observe that the naive gauge potential degrees of freedom cease to be local operators as soon as we impose the Dirac brackets. We construct new local set of operators and compute the entanglement entropy according to this algebra in $2+1$ dimensions. We find that our proposal would lead to an entanglement entropy that behave very similar to a single scalar degree of freedom if we do not include further centers, but approaches that of a gauge field if we include non-trivial centers. We explore also the situation where the gauge field is Higgsed, and construct a local operator algebra that again requires some deformation. This should give us some insight into interpreting the entanglement entropy in generic gauge theories and perhaps also in gravitational theories.

Abstract:The quantization of Yang-Mills field theories requires the introduction of a gauge fixing which leads to a violation of the Local Gauss Law described by the so-called Gauss operator. We discuss the local quantizations of Yang-Mills theories in terms of the possible Gauss operators, which are argued to have a more physical meaning than the gauge fixings. We focus the attention on the local quantizations which leave the global gauge group and a subgroup of local gauge transformations unbroken, as the Feynman quantization of quantum Electrodynamics, and show that in the non-abelian case such properties cannot be realized together with Lorentz covariance; thus, quite generally, one cannot have the structural properties of the Feynman quantization of Quantum Electrodynamics. By relaxing the condition of Lorentz covariance, we obtain a classification of Gauss operators, which satisfy gauge covariant conservation laws and generate non-trivial residual subgroups of local gauge transformations.

Abstract:In this paper we consider some general properties of spherically symmetric SU2 gauge fields. We prove that the SU2 gauge fields which are spherically symmetric in the most general sense may be divided into three basic types only: (1) synchro-spherieally symmetric SU2 gauge fields, (2) strict-spherically symmetric SU2 gauge fields, (3) spherically symmetric SU2 gauge fields reducible to U1 gauge fields.The spherically symmetric SU2 gauge fields with a Higgs field are investigated in detail and their types are completely determined. If such a field is regarded as due to the interaction of an electromagnetic field and electrically-charged vector bosons, then the following conclusion is obtained: In the spherically symmetric case there cannot exist an electrically-charged vector boson field around an m-unit monopole except for m =± 1, 0.

Abstract:The Hamiltonian description of classical gauge theories is a very well studied subject. The two best known approaches, namely the covariant and canonical Hamiltonian formalisms, have received a lot of attention in the literature. However, a full understanding of the relation between them is not available, especially when the gauge theories are defined over regions with boundaries. Here, we consider this issue, by first making it precise what we mean by equivalence between the two formalisms. Then, we explore several first-order gauge theories and assess whether their corresponding descriptions satisfy the notion of equivalence. We shall show that, even when in several cases the two formalisms are indeed equivalent, there are counterexamples that signal that this is not always the case. Thus, non-equivalence is a generic feature of gauge field theories. These results call for a deeper understanding of the subject.

On Yang-Mills fields from anti-de Sitter spaces

Abstract:Motivated by some recent progress involving a non-compact gauge group, we obtain classical gauge fields using non-compact foliations of anti-de Sitter space in 4 dimensions (required dimensionality for conformal invariance of Yang-Mills theory) and transfer these to Minkowski spacetime using a series of conformal maps. This construction also builds upon some previous works involving SU(2) gauge group in that we now use its non-compact counterpart SU(1, 1) here. We note down gauge fields in both Abelian as well as non-Abelian settings and find them to be divergent at some hyperboloid, which is a hypersurface of co-dimension 1 inside the conformal boundary of AdS4. In spite of this hurdle we find a physically relevant field configuration in the Abelian case, reproducing a known result.

Abstract:The effective geometry and the gravitational coupling of nonabelian gauge and scalar fields on generic NC branes in Yang-Mills matrix models is determined. Covariant field equations are derived from the basic matrix equations of motions, known as Yang-Mills algebra. Remarkably, the equations of motion for the Poisson structure and for the nonabelian gauge fields follow from a matrix Noether theorem, and are therefore protected from quantum corrections. This provides a transparent derivation and generalization of the effective action governing the SU(n) gauge fields obtained in [1], including the would-be topological term. In particular, the IKKT matrix model is capable of describing 4-dimensional NC space-times with a general effective metric. Metric deformations of flat Moyal-Weyl space are briefly discussed.

Abstract:The geometry of submanifolds is intimately related to the theory of functions and vector bundles. It has been of fundamental importance to find out how those two objects interact in many geometric and physical problems. A typical example of this relation is that the Picard group of line bundles on an algebraic manifold is isomorphic to the group of divisors, which is generated by holomorphic hypersurfaces modulo linear equivalence. A similar correspondence can be made between the K-group of sheaves and the Chow ring of holomorphic cycles. There are two more very recent examples of such a relation. The mirror symmetry in string theory has revealed a deeper phenomenon involving special Lagrangian cycles (cf. [SYZ]). On the other hand, C. Taubes has shown that the Seiberg-Witten invariant coincides with the Gromov-Witten invariant on any symplectic 4-manifolds. In this paper, we will show another natural interaction between Yang-Mills connections, which are critical points of a Yang-Mills action associated to a vector bundle, and minimal submanifolds, which have been studied extensively for years in classical differential geometry and the calculus of variations.

Abstract:We reformulate gauge theories in analogy with the vierbein formalism of general relativity. More specifically, we reformulate gauge theories such that their gauge dynamical degrees of freedom are local fields that transform linearly under the dual representation of the charged matter field. These local fields, which naively have the interpretation of non-local operators similar to Wilson lines, satisfy constraint equations. A set of basis tensor fields are used to solve these constraint equations, and their field theory is constructed. A new local symmetry in terms of the basis tensor fields is used to make this field theory local and maintain a Hamiltonian that is bounded from below. The field theory of the basis tensor fields is what we call the basis tensor gauge theory.

Abstract:A parametrization of gauge fields on complex projective spaces of arbitrary dimension is given as a generalization of the two-dimensional case. Gauge transformations act homogeneously on the fields, facilitating a manifestly gauge-invariant analysis. Specializing to four dimensions, we consider the nature of the effective action due to chiral scalars interacting with the gauge fields. The key qualitatively significant terms include a possible gauge-invariant mass term and a finite four-dimensional Wess-Zumino-Witten (WZW) action. We comment on relating the mass term to lattice simulations as well as Schwinger-Dyson analyses, and also on relating the WZW action to the instanton liquid picture of QCD.

A gauge theory for the 2+1 dimensional incompressible Euler equations

Abstract:We show that in two dimensions the incompressible Euler equations can be re-expressed in terms of an abelian gauge theory with a Chern-Simons term. The magnetic field corresponds to fluid vorticity and the electric field is the product of the vorticity and the gradient of the stream function. This picture can be extended to active scalar models, including the surface quasi-geostrophic equation. We examine the theory in the presence of a boundary and show that the Noether charge algebra is a Kac-Moody algebra. We argue that this symmetry is associated with the nodal lines of zero magnetic field.

Abstract:The aim of this paper is twofold: First, to present an examination of the principles underlying gauge field theories. I shall argue that there are two principles directly connected to the two well-known theorems of Emmy Noether concerning global and local symmetries of the free matter-field Lagrangian, in the following referred to as "conservation principle" and "gauge principle". Since both these express nothing but certain symmetry features of the free field theory, they are not sufficient to derive a true interaction coupling to a new gauge field. For this purpose it is necessary to advocate a third, truly empirical principle which may be understood as a generalization of the equivalence principle. The second task of the paper is to deal with the ontological question concerning the reality status of gauge potentials in the light of the proposed logical structure of gauge theories. A nonlocal interpretation of topological effects in gauge theories and, thus, the non-reality of gauge potentials in accordance with the generalized equivalence principle will be favoured.
