Abstract:In this paper we consider some general properties of spherically symmetric SU2 gauge fields. We prove that the SU2 gauge fields which are spherically symmetric in the most general sense may be divided into three basic types only: (1) synchro-spherieally symmetric SU2 gauge fields, (2) strict-spherically symmetric SU2 gauge fields, (3) spherically symmetric SU2 gauge fields reducible to U1 gauge fields.The spherically symmetric SU2 gauge fields with a Higgs field are investigated in detail and their types are completely determined. If such a field is regarded as due to the interaction of an electromagnetic field and electrically-charged vector bosons, then the following conclusion is obtained: In the spherically symmetric case there cannot exist an electrically-charged vector boson field around an m-unit monopole except for m =± 1, 0.

Abstract:The condition of self-duality for a SU(2) gauge field on Euclidean four-dimensional flat space is integrated once to obtain Laplace-like equations for three real variables or for variables one real and one complex. Abstract:> We prove that a gauge field can be determined locally by the field strength together with its gauge derivatives up to a certain order. Abstract:We study $4$-dimensional $SU(N)\times U(1)$ gauge theories with a single massless Dirac fermion in the $2$-index symmetric/antisymmetric representations and show that they are endowed with a noninvertible $0$-form $\widetilde {\mathbb Z}_{2(N\pm 2)}^{\chi}$ chiral symmetry along with a $1$-form $\mathbb Z_N^{(1)}$ center symmetry. By using the Hamiltonian formalism and putting the theory on a spatial three-torus $\mathbb T^3$, we construct the non-unitary gauge invariant operator corresponding to $\widetilde {\mathbb Z}_{2(N\pm 2)}^{\chi}$ and find that it acts nontrivially in sectors of the Hilbert space characterized by selected magnetic fluxes. When we subject $\mathbb T^3$ to $\mathbb Z_N^{(1)}$ twists, for $N$ even, in selected magnetic flux sectors, the algebra of $\widetilde {\mathbb Z}_{2(N\pm 2)}^{\chi}$ and $\mathbb Z_N^{(1)}$ fails to commute by a $\mathbb Z_2$ phase. We interpret this noncommutativity as a mixed anomaly between the noninvertible and the $1$-form symmetries. The anomaly implies that all states in the torus Hilbert space with the selected magnetic fluxes exhibit a two-fold degeneracy for arbitrary $\mathbb T^3$ size. The degenerate states are labeled by discrete electric fluxes and are characterized by nonzero expectation values of condensates. In an Appendix, we also discuss how to construct the corresponding noninvertible defect via the ``half-space gauging'' of a discrete one-form magnetic symmetry.

Abstract:This note focuses the problem of motivating the use of gauge symmetries (being the identity on the observables) from general principles, beyond their practical success, starting from global gauge symmetries and then by emphasizing the substantially different role of local gauge symmetries. In the latter case, a deterministic time evolution of the local field algebra, necessary for field quantization, requires a reduction of the full local gauge group to a residual local subgroup satisfying suitable conditions. A non-trivial residual local gauge group allows for the use of a local field algebra, otherwise precluded if is reduced to the identity. Moreover, in the non-abelian case a residual allows to exploit its topology, which provides the (gauge invariant) topological invariants which classify the vacuum structure with important physical effects. Furthermore, it provides a general mechanism of spontaneous symmetry breaking without Goldstone bosons.

Abstract:Dirac’s monopole is generalized to SU2 gauge fields in five-dimensional flat space or four-dimensional spherical space. The generalized fields have SO5 symmetry. The method used is related to the concept of orthogonal gauge fields which is developed in an appendix. The angular momenta operators for the SO5 symmetrical fields are given.
On constant solutions of SU(2) Yang-Mills-Dirac equations

Abstract:For the first time, a complete classification of all constant solutions of the Yang-Mills-Dirac equations with SU(2) gauge symmetry in Minkowski space ${\mathbb R}^{1,3}$ is given. The explicit form of all solutions is presented. We use the method of hyperbolic singular value decomposition of real and complex matrices and the two-sheeted covering of the group SO(3) by the group SU(2). In the degenerate case of zero potential, we use the pseudo-unitary symmetry of the Dirac equation. Nonconstant solutions can be considered in the form of series of perturbation theory using constant solutions as a zeroth approximation; the equations for the first approximation in the expansion are written.

U (1)-Gauge Theories on G_2 -Manifolds

Abstract:In this paper, we investigate two types of U(1)-gauge field theories on G_2-manifolds. One is the U(1)-Yang-Mills theory which admits the classical instanton solutions, we show that G_2-manifolds emerge from the anti-self-dual U(1) instantons, which is an analogy of Yang's result for Calabi-Yau manifolds. The other one is the higher-order U(1)-Chern-Simons theory as a generalization of Kähler-Chern-Simons theory, by suitable choice of gauge and regularization technique, we calculate the partition function under semiclassical approximation.

Abstract:According to the preceding studies, the lattice SU(2) gauge-scalar model with a single scalar field in the fundamental representation of the gauge group has a single confinement-Higgs phase where confinement and Higgs regions are subregions of an analytically continued single phase and there are no thermodynamic phase transitions, which is a well-known consequence of the Osterwalder-Seiler-Fradkin-Shenker theorem. In this paper, we show that we can define new types of gauge-invariant operators by combining the original fundamental scalar field and the so-called color-direction field which is obtained by change of field variables based on the gauge-covariant decomposition of the gauge field due to Cho-Duan-Ge-Shabanov and Faddeev-Niemi. By performing the numerical simulations on the lattice without any gauge fixing, we reproduce the conventional thermodynamic transition line in the weak gauge coupling, and moreover we find a new transition line detected by the new gauge-invariant operators which separates the confinement-Higgs phase into two parts, confinement phase and the Higgs phase, in the strong gauge coupling. All results are obtained in the gauge-independent way, since no gauge fixing has been imposed in the numerical simulations. Moreover, we discuss a physical interpretation for the new transition from the viewpoint of the realization of a global symmetry.

Abstract:In a new Weyl 2-spinor approach to Non abelian Gauge Theories, starting with the local U(1) Gauge group of a previous work, we study now the SU(3) case corresponding to quarks (antiquarks) interacting with color fields. The principal difference with the conventional approach is that particle-field interactions are not described by means of potentials but by the field strength magnitudes. Some analytical expressions showing similarities with electrodynamics are obtained. Classical equations that describe the behavior of quarks under gluon fields might be in principle applied to the quark-gluon plasma phase existing during the first instants of the Universe.

Abstract:The purpose of this paper is to investigate the gauge symmetry of classicalfield theories in integral formalism. A gauge invariant theory is defined interms of the invariance of the physical observables under the coordinatetransformations in principal bundle space. Through the detailed study on theproperty of non-Abelian parallel transportor under gauge transformations, weshow that it is not generally a two-point spinor, i.e. an operator to beaffected only by the gauge group elements at the two end points of the paralleltransport path, except for the pure gauge situation, and therefore the localgauge symmetry for non-Abelian models is found to be broken in non-perturbativedomain. However, an Abelian gauge theory is proved to be strictly invariantunder local gauge transformation, as it is illustrated by the invariance of theinterference pattern of electrons in Aharonov-Bohm effect. The related issuesof the phenomenon are discussed.

Abstract:We undertake a systematic study of the $4$-dimensional $SU(N)$ $2$-index chiral gauge theories and investigate their faithful global symmetries and dynamics. These are a finite set of theories with fermions in the $2$-index symmetric and anti-symmetric representations, with no fundamentals, and they do not admit a large-$N$ limit. We employ a combination of perturbative and nonperturbative methods, enabling us to constrain their infrared (IR) phases. Specifically, we leverage the 't Hooft anomalies associated with continuous and discrete groups to eliminate a few scenarios. In some cases, the anomalies rule out the possibility of fermion composites. In other cases, the interplay between the continuous and discrete anomalies leads to multiple higher-order condensates, which inevitably form to match the anomalies. Further, we pinpoint the most probable symmetry-breaking patterns by searching for condensates that match the full set of anomalies resulting in the smallest number of IR degrees of freedom. Higher-loop $\beta$-function analysis suggests that a few theories may flow to a conformal fixed point.

Abstract:A parametrization of gauge fields on complex projective spaces of arbitrary dimension is given as a generalization of the two-dimensional case. Gauge transformations act homogeneously on the fields, facilitating a manifestly gauge-invariant analysis. Specializing to four dimensions, we consider the nature of the effective action due to chiral scalars interacting with the gauge fields. The key qualitatively significant terms include a possible gauge-invariant mass term and a finite four-dimensional Wess-Zumino-Witten (WZW) action. We comment on relating the mass term to lattice simulations as well as Schwinger-Dyson analyses, and also on relating the WZW action to the instanton liquid picture of QCD.

A gauge-invariant measure for gauge fields on $\mathbb{CP}^2$

Abstract:We consider four-dimensional non-Abelian gauge theory living on a complex projective space $\mathbb{CP}^2$ as a way of gaining insights into (3+1)-dimensional QCD. In particular, we use a complex parametrization of gauge fields on which gauge transformations act homogeneously. This allows us to factor out the gauge degrees of freedom from the volume element leading to a manifestly gauge-invariant measure for the gauge-orbit space (the space of all gauge potentials modulo gauge transformations). The terms appearing in the measure that are of particular interest are mass-like terms for the gauge-invariant modes of the gauge fields. Since these mass terms come with dimensional parameters they are significant in the context of dimensional transmutation. Moreover, the existence of local gauge-invariant mass terms on $\mathbb{CP}^2$ could be related to Schwinger-Dyson calculations of the soft gluon mass. Finally, we argue that there is a kinematic regime in which the theory can be approximated by a 4d Wess-Zumino-Witten (WZW) theory. This result can be used to draw similarities between the mechanism of confinement in four and (2+1) dimensions.

Abstract:The two-dimensional self-dual Chern-Simons equations are equivalent to the conditions for static, zero-energy vortex-like solutions of the (2+1) dimensional gauged nonlinear Schrödinger equation with Chern-Simons matter-gauge coupling. The finite charge vacuum states in the Chern-Simons theory are shown to be gauge equivalent to the finite action solutions to the two-dimensional chiral model (or harmonic map) equations. The Uhlenbeck-Wood classification of such harmonic maps into the unitary groups thereby leads to a complete classification of the vacuum states of the Chern-Simons model. This construction also leads to an interesting new relationship between $SU(N)$ Toda theories and the $SU(N)$ chiral model.

Abstract:We study N=1 supersymmetric gauge theories coupled with higher derivative chiral models in four dimensions in the off-shell superfield formalism. We solve the equation of motion for the auxiliary fields and find two distinct on-shell structures of the Lagrangian that we call the canonical and noncanonical branches characterized by zero and nonzero auxiliary fields, respectively. We classify Bogomol’nyi-Prasado-Sommerfield (BPS) states of the models in Minkowski and Euclidean spaces. In Minkowski space, we find Abelian and non-Abelian vortices, vortex lumps (or gauged lumps with fractional lump charges) as 1/2 BPS states in the canonical branch, and higher derivative generalization of vortices and vortex-(BPS)baby Skyrmions (or gauged BPS baby Skyrmions with fractional baby Skyrme charges) as 1/4 BPS states in the noncanonical branch. In four-dimensional Euclidean space, we find Yang-Mills instantons trapped inside a non-Abelian vortex, intersecting vortices, and intersecting vortex-(BPS)baby Skyrmions as 1/4 BPS states in the canonical branch but no BPS states in the noncanonical branch other than those in the Minkowski space.

Abstract:We study the most general Two Higgs Doublet Model with $SU(2)$ gauge fields on the lattice. The phase space is probed through the computation of gauge-invariant global observables serving as proxies for order parameters. In each phase, the spectrum of the theory is analysed for different combinations of bare couplings and different symmetry breaking patterns. The scale setting and determination of the running gauge coupling are performed through the Wilson flow computation of the action density.

Similarities between projective quantum fields and the Standard Model

Abstract:Many homogeneous, four-dimensional space-time geometries can be considered within real projective geometry, which yields a mathematically well-defined framework for their deformations and limits without the appearance of singularities. Focussing on generalized unitary transformation behavior, projective quantum fields can be axiomatically introduced, which transform smoothly under geometry deformations and limits. Connections on the related projective frame bundles provide gauge fields with gauge group $\mathrm{PGL}_5\mathbb{R}$. For Poincaré geometry, on operator level only $\mathrm{P}(\mathrm{GL}_2\mathbb{R}\times \mathrm{GL}_3\mathbb{R})\cong \mathbb{R}_{\neq 0}\times \mathrm{PGL}_2\mathbb{R}\times \mathrm{PGL}_3\mathbb{R}$ gauge bosons can interact non-trivially with other projective quantum fields from the non- to ultra-relativistic limits. The corresponding propagating, complexified gauge bosons come with the Standard Model gauge group $G_{\mathrm{SM}}=(\mathrm{U}(1)\times \mathrm{SU}(2)\times \mathrm{SU}(3))/\mathbb{Z}_6$. Physical scale transformations can act as global gauge transformations and their spontaneous breaking can lead to masses for the projective quantum fields including the $\mathrm{SU}(2)$ gauge bosons. Projective quantum fields, which are irreducible both with respect to the Lie algebra $\mathfrak{pgl}_5\mathbb{R}$ and the Poincaré group, form Dirac fermions and $G_{\mathrm{SM}}$ gauge bosons interact with them similar to the Standard Model. For homogeneous, curved Lorentz geometries a gauge group similar to the gauge group of metric-affine gravity appears.
