Abstract:Flux- and charge-quantization laws for higher gauge fields of Maxwell type -- e.g. the common electromagnetic field (the "A-field") but also the B-, RR-, and C-fields considered in string/M-theory -- specify non-perturbative completions of these fields by encoding their solitonic behaviour and hence by specifying the discrete charges carried by the individual branes (higher-dimensional monopoles or solitons) that source the field fluxes.

Abstract:The possibility of quantizing the electric charge in supersymmetric, technicolor, and composite models is examined by studying some specific examples. By requiring an anomaly-free theory, the appropriate symmetry-breaking pattern of the gauge group, and mass generation, the electric charges may be determined.

Abstract:In the talk, I briefly demonstrate the quantum theory for mesoscopic electric circuits and its applications. In the theory, the importance of the charge discreteness in a mesoscopic electric circuit is addressed. As a result, a new kind of commutation relation for electric charge and current occurred inevitably. The charge representation, canonical current representation and pseudo-current representation are discussed extensively. It not only provides a concrete realization of mathematical models which discuss the space quantization in high energy physics and quantum gravity but also presents a sequence of applications in condensed matter physics from a different point of view. A possible generalization to coupled circuits is also proposed.

Abstract:We study the quantization of the electric charges of the gauge bosons, the Higgs bosons and the fermions in gauge theories. We investigate the intimate relation of the quantization of the electric charge with the spontaneous symmetry breaking, anomaly cancellation and Majorana mass of fermions. We discuss specific examples for the standard model and the SU(5) × U(1)Z model. We find that in these models the electric charges of particles are dynamically quantized.

Abstract:The importance of discreteness of electron charge for mesoscopic electric circuit is addressed. A quantization of the circuit in accord with the discreteness of electric charges is proposed, and a Schrödinger equation in ‘charge representation’ is obtained. The Schrödinger equation is turned to be Mathieu equation in ‘current representation’, the wavefunction and energy spectrum can be solved exactly. The WKB solutions of the energy levels for the ground state and the excited states are given.

Abstract:While it has become widely appreciated that defining (higher) gauge theories requires, in addition to ordinary phase space data, also "flux quantization" laws in generalized differential cohomology, there has been little discussion of the general rules, if any, for lifting Poisson-brackets of (flux-)observables and their quantization from traditional phase spaces to the resulting higher moduli stacks of flux-quantized gauge fields. In this short note, we present a systematic analysis of (i) the canonical quantization of flux observables in Yang-Mills theory and (ii) of valid flux quantization laws in abelian Yang-Mills, observing (iii) that the resulting topological quantum observables form the homology Pontrjagin algebra of the loop space of the moduli space of flux-quantized gauge fields. This is remarkable because the homology Ponrjagin algebra on loops of moduli makes immediate sense in broad generality for higher and non-abelian (non-linearly coupled) gauge fields, such as for the C-field in 11d supergravity, where it recovers the quantum effects previously discussed in the context of "Hypothesis H".

Abstract:The flux quantization is a key indication of electron pairing in superconductors. For example, the well-known h/2e flux quantization is considered strong evidence for the existence of charge- 2e , two-electron Cooper pairs. Here we report evidence for multicharge flux quantization in mesoscopic ring devices fabricated using the transition-metal kagome superconductor CsV3Sb5 . We perform systematic magnetotransport measurements and observe unprecedented quantization of magnetic flux in units of h/4e and h/6e in magnetoresistance oscillations. Specifically, at low temperatures, magnetoresistance oscillations with period h/2e are detected, as expected from the flux quantization for charge- 2e superconductivity. We find that the h/2e oscillations are suppressed and replaced by resistance oscillations with h/4e periodicity when the temperature is increased. Increasing the temperature further suppresses the h/4e oscillations, and robust resistance oscillations with h/6e periodicity emerge as evidence for charge- 6e flux quantization. Our observations provide the first experimental evidence for the existence of multicharge flux quanta and emergent quantum matter exhibiting higher-charge superconductivity in the strongly fluctuating region above the charge- 2e Cooper pair condensate, revealing new insights into the intertwined and vestigial electronic order in kagome superconductors. https://doi.org/10.1103/PhysRevX.14.021025 Published by the American Physical Society under the terms of the Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 International license. Abstract:A simple algebraic model for charged particle moving in two dimensional space under influence of singular magnetic field is given. The fundamental assumption for the model is that every charged particle coupled to the magnetic field is transformed into a system of quasiparticles. It is also assumed for simplicity that there is in average N fluxes per particle. If the number N of fluxes is even, then the system can be identified as composite fermions. If N is odd, then we obtain composite bosons. Quantization is described as gradation by certain abelian group G. Statistics is determined by a commutation factor on the grading group G. It is schown that for N = 2 there is a state for which the magnetic field is completely compensatad by the system of quasiparticles and for N = 3 the Landau levells are fractionally filled like in the fractional quantum Hall effect.

Abstract:What values of the Standard Model hypercharges result in a mathematically consistent quantum field theory? We show that the constraints imposed by the lack of gauge anomalies can be recast as the equation x^3 + y^3 = z^3. If hypercharge is quantised, then x, y and z must be integers. The trivial (and only) solutions, with x=0 or y=0, reproduce the hypercharge assignments seen in Nature. This argument does not rely on the mixed gauge-gravitational anomaly, which is automatically vanishing if hypercharge is quantised and the gauge anomalies vanish.

Abstract:In this work we study the structure of the electromagnetic interactions and the electric charge quantization in gauge theories of electroweak interactions based on semi-simple groups. We show that in the standard model of the electroweak interactions the structure of the electromagnetic interactions is strongly correlated to the quantization pattern of the electric charges. We examine these two questions also in all possible chiral bilepton gauge models of the electroweak interactions. In all they we can explain the vectorlike nature of the electromagnetic interactions and the electric charge quantization together demanding nonvanishing fermion masses and the anomaly cancellations.

Abstract:While it has become widely appreciated that (higher) gauge theories need, besides their variational phase space data, to be equipped with "flux quantization laws" in generalized differential cohomology, there used to be no general prescription for how to define and construct the resulting flux-quantized phase space stacks. In this short note we observe that all higher Maxwell-type equations have solution spaces given by flux densities on a Cauchy surface subject to a higher Gauss law and no further constraint: The metric duality-constraint is all absorbed into the evolution equation away from the Cauchy surface. Moreover, we observe that the higher Gauss law characterizes the Cauchy data as flat differential forms valued in a characteristic L-infinity-algebra. Using the recent construction of the non-abelian Chern-Dold character map, this implies that compatible flux quantization laws on phase space have classifying spaces whose rational Whitehead L-infinity algebra is this characteristic one. The flux-quantized higher phase space stack of the theory is then simply the corresponding (generally non-abelian) differential cohomology moduli stack on the Cauchy surface. We show how this systematic prescription subsumes existing proposals for flux-quantized phase spaces of vacuum Maxwell theory and of the chiral boson. Moreover, for the case of NS/RR-fields in type II supergravity, the traditional "Hypothesis K" of flux quantization in topological K-theory is naturally implied, without the need, on phase space, for the notorious further duality constraint. Finally, as a genuinely non-abelian example, we consider flux-quantization of the C-field in 11d supergravity/M-theory given by unstable differential 4-Cohomotopy ("Hypothesis H") and emphasize again that, implemented on Cauchy data, this qualifies as the full phase space without the need for a further duality constraint.

Abstract:The quantization of Yang-Mills field theories requires the introduction of a gauge fixing which leads to a violation of the local Gauss law described by the so-called Gauss operator. We discuss the local quantizations of Yang-Mills theories in terms of the possible Gauss operators, which are argued to have a more physical meaning than the gauge fixings. We focus the attention on the local quantizations that leave the global gauge group and a subgroup of local gauge transformations unbroken, such as the Feynman quantization of quantum electrodynamics, and show that in the non-Abelian case such properties cannot be realized together with Lorentz covariance; thus, quite generally, one cannot have the structural properties of the Feynman quantization of quantum electrodynamics. Flux-charge symmetric theory of superconducting circuits

Abstract:The quantum mechanics of superconducting circuits is derived by starting from a classical Hamiltonian dynamical system describing a dissipationless circuit, usually made of capacitive and inductive elements. However, standard approaches to circuit quantization treat fluxes and charges, which end up as the canonically conjugate degrees of freedom on phase space, asymmetrically. By combining intuition from topological graph theory with a recent symplectic geometry approach to circuit quantization, we present a theory of circuit quantization that treats charges and fluxes on a manifestly symmetric footing. For planar circuits, known circuit dualities are a natural canonical transformation on the classical phase space. We discuss the extent to which such circuit dualities generalize to non-planar circuits.

Moving black holes via singularity excision

Abstract:We present a singularity excision algorithm appropriate for numerical simulations of black holes moving throughout the computational domain. The method is an extension of the excision procedure previously used to obtain stable simulations of single, non-moving black holes. The excision procedure also shares elements used in recent work to study the dynamics of a scalarfield in the background of a single, boosted black hole. The robustness of our excision method is tested with single black-hole evolutions using a coordinate system in which the coordinate location of the black hole, and thus the excision boundary, moves throughout the computational domain.

Abstract:It is demonstrated that the orbital angular momentum ${l}_{z}$ of a particle of charge $q$ orbiting around a tube with magnetic flux $\ensuremath{\Phi}$ is quantized in units ${l}_{z}=\mathrm{integer}\ensuremath{-}\frac{q\ensuremath{\Phi}}{2\ensuremath{\pi}}$. A very simple physical argument for this is presented, and applied to understand the Dirac quantization condition and the charge-spin relation for particles bound to magnetic monopoles. The unusual statistics of flux-tube-charged-particle composites is discussed.
Semi-classical understanding of flux quantization in superconductors

Abstract:Like electric charge, magnetic flux is also quantised. Theoretically, one can show that the flux quantum must be h/e, as observed in the quantum Hall effect. However, in the superconducting systems, the flux quantum is experimentally observed as h/2e. There is no fundamental explanation for the empirical result. In this article, we argue that this phenomenon is fundamentally linked to the nonlocality problem of the Aharonov-Bohm effect and present a new semi-classical explanation for the magnetic flux quantum in superconductivity. This work will also show why the flux quantum should be h/e in the case of the quantum Hall effect.

Extended superconducting fluctuation region and 6e and 4e flux-quantization in a Kagome compound with a normal state of 3Q-order

Abstract:The superconducting state with the usual 2e-flux quantization formed from a normal state with 3Q charge density or loop-current order is a linear combination of 3 different paired states with an overall gauge invariant phase and two internal phases such that the phases in equilibrium are at $2\pi/3$ with respect to each other. In the fluctuation regime of such a 3-component superconductor, internal phase fluctuations are of the same class as for frustrated classical xy-spins on a triangular lattice. The fluctuation region is known therefore to be abnormally extended below the mean-field or the Kosterlitz-Thouless transition temperature. A 6e-flux and a 4e-flux quantized states can be constructed which are also eigenstates of the BCS Hamiltonian and stationary points of the Ginzburg-Landau free-energy with a transition temperature above that of the renormalized 2e-flux quantized state. Such states have no internal phases and so no frustrating internal phase fluctuations. These state however cannot acquire long-range order because their free-energy is higher than the co-existing fluctuating state of 2e flux-quantization. 6e- as well as 4e- flux-quantized Little-Parks oscillations however occur in which the resistivity increases periodically with field above that of the 2e-fluctuating state in its extended fluctuation regime, as are observed, followed at low temperatures to a condensation of the time-reversal odd 2e-quantized state
