Abstract:Spray cooling has a wide application prospect in the heat dissipation of high-power devices due to its excellent heat transfer performance and low demand for working medium. In this work, an experimental setup was built to investigate the heat transfer characteristics of the deionized water spray cooling in the non-boiling zone. Copper surfaces with different roughness conditions, as well as superhydrophilic/hydrophobic surfaces, were introduced to study the influence of surface property on cooling performance. Results show that no prominent change in heat transfer coefficient occurs due to the variation of roughness in the working conditions discussed. Furthermore, the superhydrophilic/hydrophobic surfaces experience a maximum reduction of 9.6% and 9.2% in heat transfer coefficient, respectively, compared with that of a smooth surface.

Abstract:A cooling system consisting of several heat exchange modules is a necessary part of an automobile, and its performance has a direct effect on a vehicle’s energy consumption. Heat exchangers, such as a charged air cooler （CAC）, radiator, oil cooler, or condenser have different structures and can be arranged in various orders, and each combination may produce different effects because of interactions among them. In this study, we aimed to explore the principles governing interactions among adjacent heat exchangers in a cooling system, using numerical simulation and experimental technology. 3D models with different combinations were developed, compared, and analyzed comprehensively. A wind tunnel test platform was constructed to validate the computational results. We found that the heat dissipation of the modules was affected slightly by their relative position （the rules basically comply with the field synergy principle）, but was independent of the modules’ spacing within a certain distance range. The heat dissipation of one module could be effectively improved by restructuring, but with a penalty of higher resistance. However, the negative effect on the downstream module was much less than expected. The results indicated that the intensity of heat transfer depends not only on the average temperature difference between cold and hot mediums, but also on the temperature distribution.

Abstract:With the rapid development of renewable energy, data center, new energy vehicle and so on, the power density of power electronics converters is continuously increasing. Higher power density means higher requirements for thermal dissipation system design. Thus, the design of cooling system is the key step to improve the power density of the power converters. Because of its simplicity and efficiency, the rectangular extruded-fin air cooling heat sink is the most common cooling system design in converters. This paper proposed an analytical model for air cooling heat sink which can help to better estimate chip temperature and design cooling system in an efficient way. Based on computational fluid dynamics (CFD)-based simulation, the thermal resistance network accuracy is verified.

Abstract:Heat exchange efficiency and flow resistance are definitively influenced by the fins' structure and dimension of both hot and cold sides,as to the plate-fin charge-air cooler.Accordingly,how to select and match fins is proved to be the most important process in charge-air cooler design.Aiming at investigating the performance of charge-air cooler with different fin combinations,numerical auxiliary studies and experiment were carried out.Combined with computer aided design(CAD)and computational fluid dynamics(CFD)analysis,numerical auxiliary studies were carried out to investigate the cooler design,simulation,comparison and selection.Findings were consistent with wind tunnel experiment which was used to validate the effectiveness of the method.The results indicate that the match of toothed fin on hot side and orthogonal-wave fin on cold side is most effective among all the 8 alternative combinations of different fin structures.Heat exchange performance can be improved by properly reducing the channel height of the hot side,increasing the fins' number and decreasing the fin pitch.

Abstract:After spraying, the cooling medium retains potential cooling capability and, consequently, can form a falling film to further cool the downward area. In this paper, the flow patterns and the heat transfer coefficients are correlated respectively in the spray zone and the falling film zone on a vertical semi-cylindrical heating surface. The incident angle of spray (0°~45°), the spray distance (2 mm~6 mm) and the spray pressure (1 bar~5 bar) are varied in the experiments. In the spray cone, as the recirculation region which varies with different parameters shrinks, the heat transfer coefficient tends to increase. For the falling film zone, if the loss rate of the liquid is low, the flow speeds in the falling films can be compared directly by examining the film thickness. As the film thickness is reduced, the flow speed in the film is increased, resulting in the higher heat transfer coefficient. The angle of 30° is the most effective to exploit the cooling capability of the two zones. In most cases, the cooling medium after spraying can still cool the surface by the equivalent of at least 40% cooling capability of the spray zone, which indicates significant potential cooling capability which could be developed in whole spray cooling systems. An empirical correlation is presented to estimate the cooling capacity ratio on spray and falling film zone. These results may be helpful when undertaking innovative design of a spray and falling film cooling facility.

Abstract:With the rapid development of computer chips with high heat flux, efficient chip cooling is becoming crucial. In this study, a finned water-cooled radiator is developed and its operational performance is tested through experiments. Furthermore, the finned water-cooled radiator heat dissipation model is established using COMSOL software, and then verified experimentally. The effects of the cooling water inlet and outlet positions, fin height, thickness, and spacing on the thermal resistance and flow resistance performance of the radiator are investigated. Based on this, the radiator structure is theoretically optimized and the required cooling water conditions for maintaining the functioning of the chip at its safe temperature are determined. The central arrangement of the cooling water inlet and outlet type performs better than the traditional diagonal arrangement, and the optimal fin-covered plate area of the radiator is almost equal to the chip area. A fin height of 5 mm, fin thickness of 0.5 mm and fin spacing of 1 mm are recommended. Furthermore, the required cooling water operational conditions corresponding to chip heat flux are considered and the fitting relationship between the cooling water flow and pressure drop is catalogued, which may provide guidance for future cooling system designs.

Abstract:In order to better reflect the actual heat transfer process, the heat transfer process of the gas jet matrix impact cooling strip steel was studied by the experimental method, and investigated the effects of jet Reynolds number Re, dimensionless nozzle spacing Χn/D (the ratio of the orifice spacing to the orifice diameter), dimensionless jet height H/D (the ratio of strip to orifice distance to orifice diameter) on forced convection heat transfer coefficient. Finally, the empirical formula of Nu is fitted basing on the experimental results. In order to study the strip jet cooling more comprehensively, combined with the experimental results, a one-dimensional unsteady heat transfer model was established for the cyclic spray cooling heat transfer of strip steel protective atmosphere, calculated the temperature field of strip steel by finite difference numerical calculation method, The results show that there is a maximum operating speed for strip steel of different thicknesses on the premise of meeting the performance requirements and safety; The larger Η/D or Χn/D, the higher outlet temperature of strip steel, and the increase rate of strip steel outlet temperature will decrease with the increase of Η/D and Χn/D; As the temperature of the cooling medium increases by 10 °C, strip steel outlet temperature increases by about 5 °C. When the volume percentage of hydrogen in the cooling medium and the flow rate of the cooling medium increase, the temperature of strip steel outlet will decrease, however, the rate of decrease will gradually decrease. The industrial application results showed the calculated value of the outlet temperature of strip steel agrees well with the measured value, and the error is about 2.78%, which means that the model meets the application requirements.

Abstract:Immersion direct contact cooling effectively transfers heat from electronic components to a cooling solution without additional thermal resistance, due to its high energy density, low power consumption, system simplicity, and integrated thermal management for electronic devices. Current scholarly research on immersed structures predominantly focuses on surface temperature effects, with a scant investigation into internal flow and temperature field distributions concerning boundary layers. This study addresses structural optimization in immersion cooling systems, employing experimental and simulation methods to elucidate the thermal mechanisms by which structural optimization impacts the performance of chip immersion cooling systems. The research examines the impact of panel spacing and liquid level height on the thickness of velocity and thermal boundary layers, as well as the combined effects of natural and forced convection under three distinct cooling modes. Analysis reveals that heat pipe immersion cooling can reduce the heat source junction temperature to 40.7 °C under a 60 W power dissipation, a 47.2 % decrease from the bare heat source temperature. Reducing panel spacing disrupts the thermal boundary, enhancing forced convection and lowering the junction temperature by up to 10.1 % (6.5 °C). As liquid level height increases, the junction temperature initially decreases and then rises, with an optimal height of 175 mm for the best overall heat transfer effect. At low flow velocities (0.04 m/s), the vertical buoyancy-induced flow velocity at the heat source surface (24.2 × 10 -6 m/s) exceeds the horizontal forced convection velocity (0.78 × 10 -6 m/s), indicating that buoyancy changes due to density differences are significant and must be considered.

Abstract:Radiant cooling systems have become a research hotspot in recent years. The air-layer radiant cooling panel always had good performance, but there is relatively little research on it. This paper aims to optimize an air-layer radiant cooling panel by establishing a computational model and analyzing its accuracy through experiments. Through the computational model, the effects of surface emissivity, the thickness of the air layer and high thermal resistance material, pipe spacing on the heat transfer performance of the air-layer radiating cooling panel, and the corresponding optimizations have been studied in this paper. Based on the results, it is recommended that a pipe spacing of between 0.1 m and 0.25 m can achieve higher cooling capacity and lower initial costs. The thinner the thickness of the air layer and decorative layer, the better the heat transfer performance. High emissivity materials need to be used on the surface of the air-layer radiant cooling panel to enhance radiant heat transfer. In the process of analyzing the spacing between pipes, a method for calculating the large temperature difference of the fluid has been added, which can help us estimate the cooling capacity in practical engineering, balance initial costs and cooling capacity, and better meet cooling needs.

Abstract:To improve the limited overall cooling effectiveness of laminated structure with the increase of coolant under larger Bi-number, a new optimized structure named transpiration-film combined cooling structure is proposed for the thermal protection of aero-engine combustion chamber. By replacing the lower impingement plate of the laminated structure with a porous layer, a desirable outside film coverage are achieved and the internal heat transfer is enhanced owing to the blocking effect and the large specific surface area of the porous layer. Accurate mathematical modeling and fully-coupled numerical approach are adopted to investigate and compare the cooling effectiveness, cooling uniformity, and the effect of skin friction reduction of the combined cooling structure and the laminated cooling structure under practical combustor conditions with larger Bi-number. The results show that the combined structure brings about a 30% increment in overall cooling effectiveness and a considerable improvement in temperature uniformity of the whole structure, and moreover, the frictional resistance on the structure surface is greatly reduced. Furthermore, an automatic single-objective optimized method is adopted to obtain optimal schemes of the combined cooling structure under a practical combustion chamber working condition, powerfully promoting the cooling effectiveness by 8.5%–8.7%. This work aims to provide the designers of aero-engine with a valuable reference for searching the thermal management approach with high efficiency and low frictional resistance.

Abstract:The cooling intensity of laminar cooling determines the microstructure of metal materials, thus affecting the performance of products, while the heat transfer coefficient directly affects the cooling intensity. A method to obtain the heat transfer coefficient of laminar cooling is proposed in this work. The distribution form of the heat transfer coefficient is obtained as a piecewise function composed of half wave sine and straight line with the nozzle as the center. The method of obtaining the characteristic parameters of the function through the structural parameters, operation parameters and experimental data is given. The accuracy of the method is verified by the experimental platform, and the influence of characteristic parameters on the temperature field of metal materials is analyzed. The mutual verification between the experimental results and the calculated results provides a strong theoretical basis for the field production process.

Abstract:Lamilloy turbine blades, efficient for air cooling, have appeared already in experimental advanced aeroengines. Lamilloy research attracts increasingly the attention of aeronautical power plant engineers at home and abroad. Since 1998, we have engaged in experimental and numerical simulation research on Lamilloy to improve its cooling effectiveness. In this paper, in order to learn how the internal flow patterns affect the overall cooling effectiveness of Lamilloy, conjugate numerical simulation was carried out for a double wall without pin fin and five Lamilloy cooling configurations; conjugate numerical simulation was carried out by using a commercial software, FLUENT 6.1. The calculated Lamilloy configurations have the same hole diameters, spacings and pin fin heights. RNG-kandepsi; turbulence model and enhanced near-wall treatment were used in simulation. The numerical results show that Lamilloy has higher cooling effectiveness than the double wall cooling. Most of the heat, transferred from hot gas to the Lamilloy, was taken off by the coolant through the walls, and the heat transfer on internal surface of outlet plate was the major mechanism for removing the heat. Our finding that Lamilloy has higher cooling effectiveness than the double wall cooling without pin fin may be explained by the reasoning that the existence of pin fin increases heat transfer area and the amount of heat transfer in Lamilloy. Thus the uniformity of temperature in Lamilloy can be improved by proper design of pin fin.

Abstract:The hydrodynamic and thermal characteristics of microchannel networks are investigated by finite element analysis with commercial software Fluent. The simulation model is based on fabricated thick film LTCC substrate with 3D cooling microchannels. A comparison of the cooling performance among fractal-shaped microchannel, parallel microchannel, serpentine microchannel, spiral microchannel is also conducted numerically based on the same heat flux and the same mass flow rate. It is found that fractal-shaped microchannel facilitates the lowest fluid pressure drop and the most uniform temperature distribution over the substrate, and that the spiral microchannel network enables the smallest temperature rise.
Optimization and Evaluation of a High-Performance Liquid Metal CPU Cooling Product

Abstract:This paper is dedicated to present theoretical optimization and experimental investigations on a practical liquid metal CPU cooling product. On the basis of a former working prototype developed in the lab, a series of critical parameters were identified and the optimization criterion was established. A schematic thermal resistance model revealed that the electromagnetic pump and fin radiator in the heat transport loop were the key components to determining the output of the system level cooling performance. Then all the critical parameters for the electromagnetic pump and fin radiator were investigated and optimized using related theoretical sub-models. With appropriate industrial design, a practical liquid metal CPU cooling product was fabricated and compared to six typical commercial cooling products. The results demonstrated that the liquid metal product could serve as one of the best CPU cooling devices in the market. Though it was inferior to the best heat pipe product with heating power of below 100 W, it, however, exhibited much better performance when the heating was increased to a level of 400 W or higher, thus ensuring a promising prospect for future high-profile CPUs.
On Improving Cooling Effectiveness of Lamilloy with Infrared Technique

Abstract:Lamilloy research attracts increasingly the attention of aeronautical powerplant engineers, both at home and abroad. Since 1998, we have engaged in research on Lamilloy to improve its cooling effectiveness. This research requires painstaking planning and execution of experimental investigation and careful analysis of experimental results. We made and tested three typical configurations of Lamilloy in a large-scale low-speed close-looped wind tunnel by infrared thermography. We obtained detailed two-dimensional contour maps of temperature and cooling effectiveness. The experimental results show that very high cooling effectiveness can be achieved with Lamilloy. The hole area ratio of Lamilloy plays the most important role in determining cooling effectiveness; the bigger the ratio, the higher is the cooling effectiveness. We derived a non-dimensional parameter f for analyzing cooling effectiveness. We find that in optimizing the design of Lamilloy, three parameters are important: parameter f, the adiabatic effectiveness of film cooling at gas side, and the internal heat transfer efficiency of Lamilloy configuration. We discuss in much detail how these three parameters should be dealt with in optimizing Lamilloy design. Although infrared technique began to be employed in heat transfer research only a few years ago, we believe that it has a promising future for assessing the relative cooling effectivenesses of different configurations of Lamilloy.
Design and Evaluation of a Liquid Metal Cooling System for Desktop Computers

Abstract:With the rapid development of highly integrated computer chips,tremendous heat generation in the closet has become a major concern for thermal management.At present,conventional thermal management schemes such as air-cooling and liquid cooling have reached their application limits.The proposition of a liquid metal chip cooling method opens new possibilities for solving the above tough issues.In this paper,a liquid metal cooling system is designed and integrated into a desktop.Its practical cooling capacity is evaluated.The results demonstrate that the liquid metal cooling system can effectively dissipate the heat generated by the desktop computer.The present work provides a basis for further developing the liquid metal cooling technology which can actually be used in reality.This is the first report for the application of the liquid metal cooling method in a practical computer.
Research on Convective Cooling and Thermal Protection Characteristics of Integrated Dual-Sided Deflector System

Abstract:Based on the goals of "high reliability, high frequency, rapid launch, and low cost" for space launch sites, an integrated dual-sided deflector system for convective cooling and thermal protection is presented. The interaction process between the gas jet and liquid water jet and its effect on the flow field environment are thoroughly studied using numerical calculation methods. Furthermore, considering the phase-change heat transfer issue in a compressible gas–liquid two-phase flow, and the varying distribution of different bubble shapes and sizes at the gas–liquid interface, a modified Lee model is derived. The research results show that compared to the classical Lee model, the modified Lee model can achieve a higher numerical accuracy in predicting the heat and mass transfer processes in gas–liquid two-phase flows. Through comparative analysis with the traditional dual-sided deflector and the conventional cooling system, the integrated dual-sided deflector system exhibits significant performance advantages in gas flow regulation and flow field environment improvement at the near-ground region of the space launch site. It not only achieves effective flow deflection, but also mitigates the degree of erosion caused by the gas jet on the deflector. This conclusion can provide theoretical references for the thermal protection design of commercial launch vehicle systems at space launch sites.

Abstract:The laminar cooling process is an important procedure in hot steel strip rolling. The spatial distribution and the drop curve of the strip temperature are crucial for the production and the quality of the steel strip. Traditionally, lumped parameter methods are often used for the modeling of the laminar cooling process, making it difficult to consider the impact of the variation of state variables and related parameters on the system, which seriously affect the stability of the steel strip quality. In this paper, a modeling and monitoring method with a time–space nature for the laminar cooling process is proposed to monitor the spatial variation of the strip temperature. Firstly, the finite-dimensional model is obtained by time–space separation to describe the temperature variation of the steel strip. Next, a global model is constructed by using the multi-modeling integration method. Then, a residual generator is designed to monitor the strip temperature where the statistics and the threshold are calculated. Finally, the superiority and reliability of the proposed method are verified by the actual-process data of the laminar cooling process for hot steel strip rolling, and different types of faults are detected successfully.
