Abstract:Metallic foams are considered as promising structural materials which can be used in a wide industrial domain such as lightweight structure design, impact energy absorption, acoustical wave attenuation, etc. The behaviour of these foams at high strain rates is therefore desired. However, the rate sensitivities of these foams are not well caracterisized because of experimental difficulties. Actually, commonly used testing technique such as classical Split Hopkinson Pressure Bar (SHPB) does not provide satisfactory results. If a classical SHPB system composed of small diameter steel bars (about 10mm) is used, an important impedance difference between bars and foam specimen or a small specimen size with respect to the cell size will result in a poor measuring accuracy. This paper presents a new testing device (a 60mm diameter nylon Hopkinson bar system) which provides an interesting solution of these deficiency. A closed outer-surface aluminium foams cylindrical specimen (4.5mm diameter and 60mm length) were tested in both common SHPB and block bar configuration. With the quasi-static tests, three groups of testing results are given for following loading speeds: 1 mm/min, 10m/s, 27m/s. Even though there are unavoidable scatters for this kind,of materials, the rate sensitivity is clearly observed. In addition, tests with rate jump on the same specimen (static loading after dynamic one or dynamic after static one) have been performed. It shows a discontinuity of stress-strain curve. This gives another proof that the material is rate sensitive in this range of loading rate.
