Abstract:Hierarchical flower-like H2Ti5O11 center dot 3H(2)O assembled with radial nanowires was fabricated via a template-free solution-based reaction, and was converted to TiO2 with distinct phases and morphologies by the subsequent acid-treating or annealing. The HCl treatment achieved the controllable conversion from titanate nanowires to rutile nanorods by varying the temperature and acidity. When compared with the as-synthesized titanate nanowires and the thoroughly transformed rutile nanorods, their mixtures were found to exhibit the best dye adsorption ability towards rhodamine B and methylene blue in water. The H2Ti5O11 center dot 3H(2)O nanowires decomposed in sequence to anatase and rutile after a subsequent calcination in air, via an intermediate phase of H2Ti4O9 center dot H2O. The hierarchical structure could be retained up to 800 degrees C. When utilized as photocatalysts to degrade rhodamine B in water, the 550 degrees C-calcinated powder, with mixed phases of anatase, rutile, and srilankite, demonstrated the highest photocatalytic activity.

Abstract:Mesoporous nanocrystal clusters of anatase TiO2 with large surface area and enhanced photocatalytic activity have been successfully synthesized. The synthesis involves the self-assembly of hydrophobic TiO2 nanocrystals into submicron clusters, coating of these clusters with a silica layer, thermal treatment to remove organic ligands and improve the crystallinity of the clusters, and finally removing silica to expose the mesoporous catalysts. With the help of the silica coating, the clusters not only maintain their small grain size but also keep their mesoporous structure after calcination at high temperatures (with BET surface area as high as 277 m2/g). The etching of SiO2 also results in the clusters having high dispersity in water. We have been able to identify the optimal calcination temperature to produce TiO2 nanocrystal clusters that possess both high crystallinity and large surface area, and therefore show excellent catalytic efficiency in the decomposition of organic molecules under illumination by UV light. Convenient doping with nitrogen converts these nanocrystal clusters into active photocatalysts in both visible light and natural sunlight. The strategy of forming well-defined mesoporous clusters using nanocrystals promises a versatile and useful method for designing photocatalysts with enhanced activity and stability.
Template-free Hydrothermal Synthesis of Macroporous TiO2 Microspheres on a Large Scale

Abstract:Macroporous TiO2 microspheres have been synthesized on a large scale by a facile hydrothermal process using titanium tetrachloride (TiCl4) as the titanium source, ammonium fluoride (NH4F) and hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) as the etchant. X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscope (SEM), and transmission electron microscope (TEM) studies show that the anatase TiO2 microspheres are well-crystalline with an average diameter of 5.43μm. N2 adsorption–desorption and mercury intrusion porosimetry analysis reveal that the as-prepared TiO2 microspheres are composed of numerous pore networks with an average pore diameter of 274nm and porosity of 39.8%. In addition, the formation mechanisms of macroporous TiO2 microspheres were also investigated.

Abstract:Mesoporous TiO(2) with a hierarchically 3D dendrimeric nanostructure comprised of nanoribbon building units has been synthesized via a spontaneous self-formation process from various titanium alkoxides. These hierarchically 3D dendrimeric architectures can be obtained by a very facile, template-free method, by simply dropping a titanium butoxide precursor into methanol solution. The novel configuration of the mesoporous TiO(2) nanostructure in nanoribbon building units yields a high surface area. The calcined samples show significantly enhanced photocatalytic activity and degradation rates owing to the mesoporosity and their improved crystallinity after calcination. Furthermore, the 3D dendrimeric architectures can be preserved after phase transformation from amorphous TiO(2) to anatase or rutile, which occurs during calcination. In addition, the spontaneous self-formation process of mesoporous TiO(2) with hierarchically 3D dendrimeric architectures from the hydrolysis and condensation reaction of titanium butoxide in methanol has been followed by in situ optical microscopy (OM), revealing the secret on the formation of hierarchically 3D dendrimeric nanostructures. Moreover, mesoporous TiO(2) nanostructures with similar hierarchically 3D dendrimeric architectures can also be obtained using other titanium alkoxides. The porosities and nanostructures of the resultant products were characterized by SEM, TEM, XRD, and N(2) adsorption-desorption measurements. The present work provides a facile and reproducible method for the synthesis of novel mesoporous TiO(2) nanoarchitectures, which in turn could herald the fabrication of more efficient photocatalysts.

Abstract:Mesoporous TiO2 nanomaterials have been investigated for decades; however, most endeavors have been focused on the exploration of their potentials in various applications, and the fundamental research for preparing mesoporous TiO2 in a highly controllable manner remains unfruitful. Herein, we report a facile pressure-driven oriented assembly approach to synthesize an unprecedented type of dehiscent mesoporous TiO2 microspheres with radial mesopore channels and oriented rutile crystallites. By varying the concentrated HCl amount, we have been able to produce TiO2 microspheres with well-controlled rutile/anatase phase ratio. By further manipulating the reaction conditions including solvent evaporation time and hydrothermal temperature, the oriented growth with tunable crevices can also be well manipulated. Such dehiscent mesoporous TiO2 microspheres have exhibited great permeability and excellent photocatalytic properties for H2 generation. We believe that the high structural complexity and predictability of this method offers great opportunities in enhancing the performance of TiO2-based materials.

Abstract:The successful synthesis of hierarchically structured titanium silicalite-1 (TS-1) with large intracrystalline macropores by steam-assisted crystallisation of mesoporous silica particles is reported. The macropore topology was imaged in 3D by using electron tomography and synchrotron radiation-based ptychographic X-ray computed tomography, revealing interconnected macropores within the crystals accounting for about 30 % of the particle volume. The study of the macropore formation mechanism revealed that the mesoporous silica particles act as a sacrificial macropore template during the synthesis. Silicon-to-titanium ratio of the macroporous TS-1 samples was successfully tuned from 100 to 44. The hierarchically structured TS-1 exhibited high activity in the liquid phase epoxidation of 2-octene with hydrogen peroxide. The hierarchically structured TS-1 surpassed a conventional nano-sized TS-1 sample in terms of alkene conversion and showed comparable selectivity to the epoxide. The flexible synthesis route described here can be used to prepare hierarchical zeolites with improved mass transport properties for other selective oxidation reactions.

Abstract:The first chromia-pillared tetratitanate is prepared by the reaction of the layered tetramethylammonium-intercalated tetratitanate with an aqueous chromium(III) acetate followed by calcination at 400°C. The new porous material has a specific surface area as high as 94 m2g−1and an interlayer distance of 1.06 nm along with a moderately strong acidity. The layered nature of the pillared material may be retained above 600°C.

Abstract:Porous nanostructures of semiconductors are well-known for their ability to enhance the photocatalytic activity thanks to the large specific surface area and abundant active sites for the reactions, interfacial transport, and high utilization of light arising from multireflections in the pores. In this paper, we have successfully fabricated a special porous SrTiO3 three-dimensional (3D) architecture through a facile hydrothermal reaction at 150 degrees C, using layered protonated titanate hierarchical spheres (LTHSs) of submicrometer size as a precursor template. The SrTiO3 architecture is characterized by the 3D assembly of hundreds of highly oriented nanocubes of 60-80 nm by the partial sharing of (100) faces, thereby displaying porous but single-crystal-like features reminiscent of mesocrystals. Our experimental results have shown the key roles played by the template effect akin to that in topotactic transformation in crystallography and Ostwald-ripening-assisted oriented attachment in the formation of such nanocube assemblies. Compared to the solid SrTiO3 photocatalysts previously synthesized by high-temperature solid-state methods, the as-synthesized porous SrTiO3 nanocube assemblies have relatively large specific surface areas (up to 20.83 m(2).g(-1)), and thus they have exhibited enhanced photocatalytic activity in hydrogen evolution from water splitting. Expectantly, our synthetic strategy using LTHSs as the precursor template may be extended to the fabrication of other titanate photocatalysts with similar porous hierarchical structures by taking advantage of the diversity of the perovskite-type titanate.

Abstract:Novel BaTiO3 hierarchical porous microspheres were achieved by using H2Ti2O5·H2O (HTO) hierarchical microspheres as a precursor template via a facile solvothermal method. Interestingly, the BaTiO3 microspheres were constructed with two-dimensional (2D) nanosheets, which were composed of many order nanocrystals with crystal-axis-orientation. The special hierarchical structure, which is both macroporous and mesoporous, exhibits a large specific surface area and a high total pore volume. The photocatalytic performance of BaTiO3 hierarchical microspheres for degradation of methyl orange (MO) under UV-light irradiation was tested, its apparent rate being up to 0.10183 min-1, almost 23 times higher than that for nanoscale BaTiO3 particles. The attractive photocatalytic properties are considered to benefit from the effective features of hierarchical BaTiO3 microspheres, such as the ultrathin thickness of nanosheets and their ordered interconnected macro-mesoporous structure and intrinsic photocatalytic activity. This study offers an in situ topochemical conversion route to synthesis of other titanium-based perovskite hierarchical nanostructures, and thus opening the door for the synthesis of other titanium-based functional materials and expanding their potential application.

Abstract:Mesoporous titanium dioxide was successfully prepared via hydrolyzing of tetrabutyl titanate and using sodium laurylsulfonate (SDS) as a template. The samples were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), field-emitted scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and UV-visible absorption spectra (UV-vis). The results indicated that ordered mesoporous TiO2 was of a hexagonal packed structure. The mesoporous pore diameter was uniform of about 2 nm and the crystal was anatase phase. The particles were spherical ultrafine titania with anatase phase. Degradation results revealed that mesoporous titanium dioxide has very good photocatalytical activity.

Abstract:A synthesis for easily shaped Ti-containing mesoporous silicates has been reported, which uses as-prepared mesoporous silica SBA-15 as a host template, an inorganic titanium salt (such as TiCl3 or TiOSO4) as a titanium source and water as a solvent. The synthesis involves three steps: obtaining as-prepared mesostructured silicate, grafting functional moieties, and thermal treatment, which is feasible in industry. The as-prepared titanium-containing mesostructured silicates can be easily shaped. XRD, N-2 sorption isotherms, TEM, FT-IR and UV-vis techniques reveal that Ti-containing mesoporous silicates after calcination have the highly ordered 2-D hexagonal mesostructure, high surface areas (475-837 m(2)/g), large pore volumes (0.56-0.92 cm(3)/g), uniform pore sizes (6.4-7.3 nm), and tetrahedrally incorporated titanium species in silica frameworks. The titanium source has a great influence on grafting.

Abstract:Titanium dioxide (TiO2) polymorphs photocatalysts containing two or more crystal phases have customarily been synthesized at high temperature using complicated procedures or expensive equipment, accompanied by the formation of by-products. Therefore, here, we propose an effective acid-regulated hydrolysis and condensation of titanium cation strategy to directly synthesize mesoporous TiO2 with controllable phase junctions. In the method, poly dimethyl diallyl ammonium chloride (PDADMAC) is used as the structure directing agent to produce mesostructure, and hydrochloric acid (HCl) is used as the acid regulator and coordination agent to adjust the hydrolysis and condensation modes of Ti4+, thereby controlling the crystal structure and phase junctions of synthesized mesoporous TiO2 polymorphs. Furthermore, since the heterophase junctions and mesostructure effectively improve the separation and transfer of photo-generated electron-holes, the obtained R74B26 with unique brookite and rutile phase junctions owns the highest photocatalytic activity among all obtained samples, the evolution rate of H2 is 8.98 mmol h‐1−1 g−1. This work will open up new perspectives toward the synthesis of mesoporous polycrystalline material for various potential applications.

Abstract:A direct-triblock-copolymer templating method is demonstrated to synthesize ordered mesoporous crystalline C-TiO2 (MCT) composites using phenolic resins and acid–base pairs [acidic TiCl4 and basic counterpart Ti(OC4H7)4] as carbon and titanium sources, respectively. The composites possess highly crystalline anatase pore walls that are “glued” by amorphous carbon, ordered mesostructure, high surface areas (∼200 m2/g), and large pore volumes (∼0.15 cm3/g). The titania content is as high as 87 wt%. MCT composite favors the immobilization of proteins and enhances the electrocatalytic properties in relation to the reduction of hydrogen peroxide.

Abstract:A silica-pillared layered lanthanum titanate was prepared by first exchanging K 2La 2Ti 3O 10 with n-C 6H 13NH 3Cl, then reacting with octa (3-aminopropylsilasesquioxane), and finally calcinating the obtained product in air to remove the interlayered organics. XRD, IR, TG/DTA, TEM, and specific surface area measurement were used to characterize the resultant, silica-pillared layered lanthanum titanate. It was shown that the silica-pillared layered lanthanum titanate has a high thermal stability above 800 C, an interlayer distance of 1.73 nm (500��C) and a specific surface area of 43. 0 m 2g -1.

Abstract:Hierarchical nano-crystalline TS-1 can be directly synthesized using tetrapropylammonium hydroxide (TPAOH) as single template in the presence of a ‘seed’ gel. The hierarchical nano-crystalline TS-1 was characterized by scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy, powder X-ray diffraction, UV–Vis diffuse reflectance spectroscopy and nitrogen adsorption–desoprtion. Compared with the conventional TS-1, the hierarchical nano-crystalline TS-1 contained an additional porosity including supermicro/mesopores, which attributed to the interstitial voids existing between the nanocrystals. The secondary porosity in the TS-1 material provided an enhanced external surface area and high mesopore volume in favor of fast diffusion of both reactants and products, which resulted in an enhanced activity in the epoxidation of bulky molecules cyclohexene using aqueous H2O2 solution as oxidant.

Abstract:A series of alumina-pillared layered tetratitanates with different interlayer spacings (d(001) = 15.2-17.0 Angstrom) has been first prepared through a step-wise exchange process and by finely changing the exchange reaction conditions such as reaction time and molar ratio of reactants in the reaction mixture, and hydrolysis conditions such as the pH and aging time used to generate the pillaring agent. Apart from the interlayer spacing, the pore diameter and specific surface area of the pillared samples can also be changed by varying the preparation conditions. The resulting alumina-pillared layered tetratitanates were porous, with both micro- and meso-pores (average pore diameter=61.5-95.8 Angstrom). The specific surface area (BET, N-2, 77 K) of the starting material K2Ti4O9 (5 m(2) g(-1)) was increased by pillaring up to 56.6-105.6 m(2) g(-1). The relatively high surface area is mainly due to the microporous structure of the interlayered spaces formed by stable alumina pillars. The structure of the alumina-pillared layered tetratitanates was thermostable above 500 degrees C. The results are compared with those previously reported.
Studies on Synthesis, Characterization and Catalytic Behavior of Hydrotalcite Pillared with Peroxoheteropolyanions

Abstract:The Keggin - ion [ SiW11 (TiO2) O39 ]6-, [ SiW9 ( TiO2)3O37]10-, [ PW11(TiO2)-O39]5-. [PW9(TiO2)3O37]9- intercalated Zn2Al hydrotalcite - like compounds were prepared by means of direct ion-exchange reaction in aqueous solution, and were characterized by elemental analysis , XRD , IR and XPS spectra . The interlayer space of the pillared products increased from 0.92nm to 1. 47nm with the peroxoheteropolyanions displacing the NO3- ions in the gallery. Results from IR and XPS show that the peroxoheteropolyanions structure are well remained. The pillared products showed good catalytic behavior over the cyclohexene conversion.

Abstract:A silica-pillared layered titanate was prepared by reacting H2Ti4O9 with pure NH2(CH2)(3)Si(OC2H5)(3) (abbreviated hereafter as APS), washing the precipitate with water, which leads to the hydrolysis and polymerization of the intercalated APS with the formation of APS oligomers, and calculating the product in air 500 degrees C to remove the interlayered organics. The silica-pillared layered titanate thus obtained has an interlayer distance of 14.7 Angstrom and a specific surface area of 45.9m(2)/g.
