Abstract:The foundations of Qiandao Lake Bridge are located in deep water and are composed of concrete-filled steel pipe bored piles. As required in the design, the inclination degree of a pile shall not be greater than 0.3% after the pile is completed. The requirement for construction accuracy is strict and the construction is thus difficult. This paper focuses on the main equipment used for construction of the bored piles with floating boring machine, the construction process and quality assurance measures of the piles by pile-planting method.

Abstract:The soft soil treatment is one of the hot issues needed to be solved in many constructions including tunnels, freeways, etc. In this paper, a prefabricated pipe pile with side openings and wrapped geotextile is first proposed aiming to realize both the effect of pile foundation and composite foundation for soft soil treatment, which could be capable of draining and increasing frictional resistance. It combines fast drainage consolidation and high bearing capacity, which could be used under different engineering conditions with different designs. Small holes on pipe pile provide the drainage channel for vacuum to accelerate the consolidation and reduce the squeezing effect. The geotextile wrapped outside reduces the friction in pile-driven process and has the anti-filtering effect to ensure the long-term stability of the drainage channel. After the consolidation, the drainage pipe pile is grouted to form a composite foundation with high bearing capacity, which has good time, economy and environmental benefits. The drainage pipe pile can be developed to some special designs for dam filling and reclamation of islands. The proposed innovative designs of pipe pile could satisfy the demand of high bearing capacity and quick consolidation on soft soil, which combine both the effect of pile foundation and composite foundation.

Abstract:In this study, we propose a drainage pipe pile under vacuum consolidation to integrate foundation treatment and pile foundation engineering in soft soil areas. To study its bearing capacity characteristics and foundation treatment performance, single pile static load tests, vane shear tests, and water content tests were carried out for ordinary piles, perforated piles, and drainage pipe piles under conditions of static and vacuum consolidation. Based on the results, the concept of strong and weak reinforcement areas was proposed and used for bearing capacity prediction. The results showed that the drainage pipe pile did not become silted under vacuum consolidation. The single pile bearing capacity was much higher than that of an ordinary pile, and the pile side friction was exerted mainly in the middle and lower parts. Good results were achieved using the shear strength at the junction of the strong and weak reinforcement areas to estimate the ultimate bearing capacity of a single pile. This study provided important insights into the design and construction of drainage pipe piles in a soft soil foundation.

Abstract:Defects exist in vertical reinforcement, such as drainage capacity and large bearing capacity cannot be achieved at the same time. This study developed a new type of porous pipe pile with drainage function. It is assumed the tube flow for pore fluid, and the continuous pore pressure according to Poiseuille equation. Then, the analytical solution of strain consolidation is deduced. The drainage pile presents the best consolidation capacity compared to sand drain, gravel pile and undrained pile. The effect of pile modulus, mattress modulus and radius ratio on consolidation are also analyzed. Drainage capacity and modulus are two main factors that affect the consolidation performance. The drainage capacity is the most important. Within the same drainage capacity, greater the modulus of the pile produces faster consolidation process.

Abstract:Large-diameter cast-in-situ thin-wall tubular pile is a new kind of pile and has been put to wide use in the treatment of soft soil in expressway,dam,embankment,and excavation due to its advantages of cost-saving,fast construction,high quality and less environmental pollution.Usually,the bearing capacity of pile is caused by end-bearing capacity and the frictional resistance between soil and pile.Hence,how to evaluate the outer and inner friction resistances is the key point.So far little progress has been achieved.Whether soil core should be taken into account and how to rectify the end-bearing capacity and friction resistance are still under consideration.This is the main reason that the results deduced from present methods are far away those from the measurement.Based on the load transfer mechanism,five methods from domestic and overseas researches have been analyzed and compared with two case studies.In all these methods,ICP method turns out to be the best one and can be easily used.Its calculation result coincides with the measurement from static loading test,which demonstrates that this method is worthy to be used in practice.

Abstract:An engineering project of the super-long rock-socketed bored piles crossing a huge thick gravel layer with about 40 m depth was conducted at a 350 m high-rise building in Wenzhou area. The selection of drilling machine,the drilling method in different soil layers,the construction technology in crossing a huge thick gravel layer,the preparation of mud and the bore hole cleaning technology were presented to discuss details of the construction technology of the over 100-meter super-long bored piles. Moreover,the pile diameter and the ultrasound test were used to analyze the quality of drilled hole and pile shaft,respectively. In addition,a large tonnage static load test was conducted to capture the bearing capacity and the settlement of test pile. Some key findings indicate that the varying drilling processes,the high quality mud and the variable drilling methods can be adopted in different soil layers during the construction of the super-long bored piles. During a super-long pile construction in a gravel layer,the mud leakage and the borehole collapse can be solved by adjusting the property of mud,whereas the bits with variable diameter and the pump suction reverse circulation drilling can be adopted to improve the drilling efficiency. The static load test shows that the percentage of the super-long pile settlement at the pile head caused by the pile compression is over 90% within the working load. It can also be concluded that the thickness of the sediments at the pile end has an influence on the settlement of the super-long pile.
A Field Study on the Behavior of Static Drill Rooted Nodular Piles with Caps under Compression

Abstract:The static drill rooted nodular (SDRN) pile is a new type of composite pile that consists of a precast pile and surrounding cemented soil. Its cost advantages and environmentally friendly construction have been proven in applications in Southeast China. Moreover, the composition of pipe pile and nodular pile is based on the load transfer mechanisms of a pile foundation, which is effective in optimal design. This paper presents a field study on the behavior of SDRN piles under compression. The load-displacement response, axial force, mobilized load of pile cap, skin friction, and tip resistance of the composite pile are discussed. Here, the bilinear base load-displacement model was adopted to analyze the test results. It is found that providing caps on the static drill rooted piles takes full advantage of the static drill rooted method, and drilling and grouting into the soil beneath the cap, which can be considered a type of ground improvement treatment, can increase the bearing capacity of the pile cap; thus, setting a pile cap for this type of piles is recommended. The existence of the caps in the field tests decreased the skin friction of the upper part of pile shaft because of the additional settlement of the surrounding soil, which developed owing to the pressure from the caps. The frictional capacity of the concrete-cemented soil interface was much higher than that of the cemented soil-soil interface. The skin friction of the lower part of the pile shaft was about 1.25 times in clayey soil and 2.0 times in sandy soil compared with the bored pile. It can be concluded that the cemented soil-soil interface of the SDRN pile was probably better than the concrete-soil interface of the bored pile. The test results fitted the first stage curve of the bilinear model well, and it can be supposed that the base soil was strengthened because of the permeation of the cement paste.

Abstract:As a kind of building energy saving technology utilizing the shallow geothermal energy, energy pile is one of the ways to achieve the goal of reducing carbon emissions during building operation. Considering the shortcomings of construction technology for traditional energy pile, we propose the static drilling rooted geothermal energy pile (SDRGEP) and construction technology based on its characteristic. The short-term and long-term tests of SDREP are carried out by a test pile of a building in Ningbo. The variation properties of pile temperature, coefficient of performance (COP), thermally induced axial load and mobilized shaft resistance are analyzed. The test results show that the pile temperature gradually increases with time. COP value gradually decreases over time and then tends to be constant. Particularly, the performance of thermal axial stress and mobilized shaft resistance are determined by the constraint conditions of pile top and pile end. In the short-term test, the thermal axial stress shows the form of large in the middle and small in both ends, and there is a null point (NP). In the long-term test, the thermal axial stress at the top of the pile are larger. The mobilized shaft resistance is related to the time, temperature and constraint conditions, etc. It is varied gradually from one NP to three NPs along the pile. Therefore, the test results are related to the service state and construction technology of pile, which provides the theoretical basis for promoting the application of the SDRGEP.

Abstract:Abstract Taking No.65 pier of Zhongshan-Tanzhou express line as the background, the construction technology of percussive reverse circulation drilling hole forming squeezed branch pile is studied, the construction process of percussive reverse circulation drilling hole forming squeezed branch pile is defined, and through the field trial hole forming test, the points needing attention in field construction are summarized and improved: (1) The top elevation of the steel casing shall not exceed 30cm of the surface elevation, and the hole diameter of the percussion drilling hole shall be slightly larger than the designed hole diameter, so as to avoid the floating of the steel cylinder and the influence of too small hole diameter on the squeezing operation; (2) hole cleaning operation is an important factor for the success or failure of the squeezed branch pile construction, and the sediment thickness has a great influence on the bearing capacity of the pile foundation. After the expansion equipment is squeezed and the reinforcement cage is lowered, the hole cleaning is carried out, and the control points and mud parameters during each hole cleaning are clarified; (3) during the expansion process, the extrusion pressure value and the floating amount of the expansion equipment should be detailed, the geological information should be verified, and the bearing capacity of the pile foundation should be evaluated.

Abstract:With the Yellow River super-long bridge construction as the research object,the paper explores the fabrication of bored piles in unstable sand layers in the main riverbed,and in-depth researches techniques and technical parameters,so as to improve the efficiency of the pile foundation construction,ensuring safety and quality,to minimize and avoid quality problems and to reduce construction investment.Advanced inside hole test equipment was adopted to detect the pile holes' quality,to verify and constantly improve the construction process and technical parameters,to ensure the safety of construction and improve the quality of piles.Circulated boring holes was adopted in the main riverbed and on the beaches for pile foundation construction,and the buried depths of protecting tubes were increased,the hole quality test was strengthened,trying to shorten the lapping time for reinforcement cages and to improve the mud index control.The adopted tecnhuques were safe and effective,ensured the project quality and can be taken for reference by similar projects.

Abstract:The full-rotation complete tube technology is to drive the flower tube and the steel casing to be fastened by connecting pins, drive the steel casing to rotate 360 degrees, and apply torque and vertical load to the steel casing in the hole, with the help of the steel casing pipe to cut and drill the boulder and medium-coarse sandstone layer with strong force, make full use of the role of the steel casing to protect the wall, and then use the auger and sand drill to grab the confined water and the soil in the steel casing, and then clear thelobstacles inside of the steel casing. Controlling the slump of concrete and the amount of concrete poured each time can more effectively control the construction quality, which has obvious effects on speeding up the construction progress and improving efficiency, and at the same time avoiding environmental pollution.
Engineering Character of a New-Style Pretensioned Spun Concrete Nodular Pile

Abstract:As one of the primary pile style in soft soil, the pretensioned spun concrete piles are applied widely in many fields, such as building engineering, traffic engineering, port engineering, hydraulic engineering, etc. However, there are many limitations in technology, such as its lower shaft resistance, lower resistance to bending and shearing, poor linking manner and durability of connection between pile sections, etc. A new-style pretensioned spun concrete nodular pile is introduced in this paper. The main construction technology, mechanical bonding manner and bearing character are improved aiming on the shortcoming of the traditional pretensioned spun concrete pile. Through the compressive and tensile static loading test, the bearing capacity of the new- style pretensioned spun concrete nodular pile has much higher than that of the ordinary one by 26% at least. Especially, its ultimate uplift resistance can be increased enormously, which is the engineer quite concerned about. Finally, the bearing mechanism and how the new nodular pile improve the skin friction are developed. So the new-style pretensioned spun concrete nodular piles have many merits comparing to the traditional one, which is helpful to its spread and application in soft soil.

Abstract:In order to explore bearing characteristics of a new-type static drill rooted nodular pile foundation (SDRN), which is composed of PHC pile, bamboo joint pile, and cement soils, field tests of three piles were carried out by embedding internal rebar stress gauges to collect test data. The test results show that the SDRN piles were under elastic state and the load-settlement curves changed slowly before reaching the ultimate capacity. As pile head loads increased, the pile shaft frictions developed progressively, and axial forces gradually reduced along pile depths. Taking into account the interaction between the pile, the cement soils, and surrounding soils, a simplified method for calculating settlements and bearing capacity of SDRN piles was proposed. With corresponding parameters, the computing results obtained by the proposed method were compared with the field experimental data, which indicates acceptable agreements; thus, it is concluded that the applicability and predictive capability of the proposed method were verified.

Abstract:To study the pile-forming mechanism and bearing deformation characteristics of continuous flight auger (CFA) piles, a series of procedures, including helical drilling, pulling up/grouting, and inserting cage/pile forming, were simulated in clay-sand double-layer foundations by a homemade model drilling machine system in laboratory model tests. The effects of two different pile-forming methods on the load transfer and bearing characteristics of the piles were investigated by performing a model test comparison of CFA piles and bored piles. The experimental results show that there exist a soil improvement effect around the pile and a diameter expansion effect during the drilling process and grouting process for the CFA pile, which can effectively improve the lateral friction resistance of the pile. Compared with the bored pile, the pile diameter in the middle of the CFA pile increased by 19%, and the total lateral friction resistance of the CFA pile increased by 9.1% at a high load (1500 N). The comparative results of the model tests show that the bearing capacity of a single CFA pile increased by 50.0% and that the total settlement decreased by 40.5%. The results of the in situ test piles show that the load-settlement curves of the two pile types are similar under low-medium loads and that the lateral friction resistance of the CFA pile under high loads is better developed, which is relatively consistent with the model test results.

Abstract:Abstract Pile foundation has unique advantage in reducing the settlement of the upper structure and improving the foundation bearing capacity, while Drilling with PHC Pipe Cased Pile (DPC Pile) is a newly developed non-extruded soil PHC tubular pile which integrates drilling-pile sinking-dumping simultaneously to solve the pile sinking problem of large diameter (800 ∼ 1400mm) pipe pile. It solves the problem of pile sinking caused by large pile diameter or hard soil layer, breaks the situation that the pipe pile foundation can only be limited to small diameter and size, and broadens the applicable scope of engineering geology of pipe pile. It realizes the full rock-socketed of the pile tip (which can enter the middle and weak weathering stratum), improves the bearing capacity of single pile, and gives full play to the advantages of pipe pile material with higher strength. It has little damage to the pipe pile and little noise, being relatively environmentally friendly, as well as plays a major demonstration role in leading the new direction of the development of green, energy-saving and environmental protection pile foundation, conforming with the advanced development trend of upgrading traditional advantageous industries to high-tech manufacturing and construction technology with promising market.
