Abstract:An attempt is made in this study to research the performance of prestressed concrete pipe piles based on 10,333 pile tests. Short and medium-length piles with slenderness ratios ranging from 10 to 90 are most widely used, and the optimal length is between the range of 10~50 m. For the same bearing stratum and diameter, the capacity of pile increases with increasing pile length until a limiting value is achieved. The average pile-top settlement is approximately in the range of 10 ~ 25 mm, and the rebound rates for piles with various lengths are similar. The results show that the diameter of Φ400 and Φ500 is most widely used, accounting for 33.8% and 46.1%, respectively, and the optimal length is between the range of 10 ~ 50 m. Under conditions of, when the bearing stratum is clay, the bearing capacity of pipe piles increases with an increase in length to diameter ratio; when sandy soil, the bearing capacity firstly increases and then decreases; when with the same length to diameter ratio, the bearing capacity increases in both cases, and the latter is higher than the former. There is a large discreteness in settlement of pile top, and the average value is normally about 10 ~ 25 mm, without significant relationship with the bearing stratum. The results of statistical research will be a reliable reference for pipe pile research, design and construction in soft soil area. The results are expected to improve the understanding of prestressed concrete pipe piles and facilitate the design process.

Abstract:In this study, we propose a drainage pipe pile under vacuum consolidation to integrate foundation treatment and pile foundation engineering in soft soil areas. To study its bearing capacity characteristics and foundation treatment performance, single pile static load tests, vane shear tests, and water content tests were carried out for ordinary piles, perforated piles, and drainage pipe piles under conditions of static and vacuum consolidation. Based on the results, the concept of strong and weak reinforcement areas was proposed and used for bearing capacity prediction. The results showed that the drainage pipe pile did not become silted under vacuum consolidation. The single pile bearing capacity was much higher than that of an ordinary pile, and the pile side friction was exerted mainly in the middle and lower parts. Good results were achieved using the shear strength at the junction of the strong and weak reinforcement areas to estimate the ultimate bearing capacity of a single pile. This study provided important insights into the design and construction of drainage pipe piles in a soft soil foundation.

Abstract:Model testing for soft soil foundations with and without a prefabricated vertical drain (PVD) was performed to assess the consolidation and long-term performance of PVDs. Surface settlements and excess pore-water pressures at different depths were monitored throughout the applied multistage loading. Classical methods with improved solutions that considered variations in the discharge capacity and non-Darcian flow were applied via a back-analysis of the consolidation results. Parameters related to the smear effect and well resistance were discussed in these solutions. It was found that the foundation improved with PVD had an approximately 20% increase in the total degree of consolidation compared with untreated soft soil foundations; the well resistance of the PVD system not only existed but it also changed over time; the average discharge capacity in the model test under multistage loading condition was far less than the reported value; and the advanced solutions, especially the solution that considered the varied discharge capacity (with q(w0) = 3 cm(3)/s and A(w) = 4.12 x 10(-6) 1/s), gained a better fitting result than the classical solution.
Influence of Weld on Integrity Testing of Prestressed Pipe Piles

Abstract:Nondestructive testing to welded concrete tubular pile demonstrates that more distinct reflected signals exist at the junctions.The traditional stiffness transfer model cannot give a rational explain for this phenomenon.So a simplified model of weld joint for pipe pile was presented.The weld joint in this model is viewed as a spring without time-delay,the stiffness of which is a function of the depth and height of weld.The longitudinal vibration performance of the spliced prestressed concrete pipe pile in inhomogeneous soil was studied and a semi-analytical solution of stiffness and admittance on the pile head under half sine harmonic excitation was obtained using the presented model.The influence of the depth and height of weld on the dynamic response of the pile head was also given.It is found that the reflection at the weld joint will be affected significantly by the depth of the weld.In addition,the fitting results of the field measurement for two typically defective piles show that the presented model can simulate well the reflection signals at the joint and overcome the limitation of the existing theories.

Abstract:The soft soil treatment is one of the hot issues needed to be solved in many constructions including tunnels, freeways, etc. In this paper, a prefabricated pipe pile with side openings and wrapped geotextile is first proposed aiming to realize both the effect of pile foundation and composite foundation for soft soil treatment, which could be capable of draining and increasing frictional resistance. It combines fast drainage consolidation and high bearing capacity, which could be used under different engineering conditions with different designs. Small holes on pipe pile provide the drainage channel for vacuum to accelerate the consolidation and reduce the squeezing effect. The geotextile wrapped outside reduces the friction in pile-driven process and has the anti-filtering effect to ensure the long-term stability of the drainage channel. After the consolidation, the drainage pipe pile is grouted to form a composite foundation with high bearing capacity, which has good time, economy and environmental benefits. The drainage pipe pile can be developed to some special designs for dam filling and reclamation of islands. The proposed innovative designs of pipe pile could satisfy the demand of high bearing capacity and quick consolidation on soft soil, which combine both the effect of pile foundation and composite foundation.

Abstract:Vacuum consolidation model tests were conducted in order to analyze the growth degree in bearing capacity of pile foundation, the variation of shear strength and water content of soil around the pile, as well as the water discharge of surrounding soil. The Q-s curves of model piles and the distributions of vane shear strength and water content of soil around piles, and curves of water drainage with time were obtained. Results show that the vacuum consolidation technology can increase the bearing capacity of pile foundation by 2.7 times under the conditions of the tests, and form a dense layer around the pile, which is 4.5 cm thick with relatively high shear strength and relatively low water content. The influence of holes layout was analyzed. The bearing capacity of pile foundation was greatly affected by the spacing of hole layers, but little affected by dimension of holes.
Treatment of Sloping Prestressed Pipe Piles in Soft Soil

Abstract:Based on an engineering example,the reason of sloping prestressed pipe piles(PPPs) and the treatment method for the sloping PPPs are given.First of all,the sloping condition of each pile should be made clearly,then the damaged position of each pile is found out using low strain dynamic tests,and finally,treatment measures are put forward.For the piles with serious deviation of pile tops and rupture of pile shafts,they must be replaced by bored piles.For the piles with smaller slope of pile tops and soundness of pile shafts,they can be directly used after rectification and righting.For the piles with larger deviation of pile tops and defect of pile shafts,the first step is rectification and righting,and then strengthening the pile shafts by placing reinforcement cage and pouring concrete in the cores of piles.The ultimate bearing capacity of the treated single pile accounts for 60% of the design capacity.For the piles with treatment because of serious shortage of bearing capacity,the bearing capacity should be strengthened by adding bored piles.The measured settlement of buildings is small and uniform,and the maximum settlement is only 13 mm,indicating that the treatment method achieves the desired results,and it can be used for reference.

Abstract:Laboratory 1g model tests were carried out to study the bearing capacity and load transfer mechanisms of precast open-ended micro pipe piles in soft soil. The single pile, 2 × 2 and 3 × 3 pile groups were designed and tested under vertical compression, uplift and horizontal loads, respectively. A steep fall pattern occurred in the load–displacement curves of piles under vertical compression and uplift loads. The measured soil plug length and axial force indicated that the piles could be considered as fully plugged friction piles under vertical compression load. The pile groups behaved in a non-integral failure mode under vertical uplift load and a conical wedge failure mode under horizontal load. At the early loading stages under vertical compression and uplift loads, the pile shaft resistance of the upper part tended to be fully mobilised earlier than that of the lower part. At the later loading stages, the pile shaft resistance of the upper part decreased, whereas the shaft resistance of the lower part still showed a little increase. The maximum bending moment of the pile occurred at a depth of about 10Dp under horizontal load.

Abstract:Under conditions of seismic action or any other mutation stresses, the soil of the liquefiable foundation can lose its strength and stiffness rapidly due to the liquefication, resulting in the loss of the bearing capacity. The traditional anti-liquefaction measures mainly focus on the ground treatment, while the open-hole pipe pile provided in this paper has both anti-liquefaction and bearing capacity. Firstly, the liquid flow in the holes of the pipe pile is assumed to meet the Poiseuille equation, and the equal strain assumption is applied. Then we derive the analytic solution of the pore pressure considering both radial and vertical flows under the time-varying load, combined with the stress concentration phenomenon of the pipe pile composite foundation. Furthermore, considering the pore pressure accumulation under cyclic loading, the analytical solution is improved by using the empirical model of pore pressure development. Based on the analytical solution, this paper analyzes and compares the development of pore pressure of the open-hole pipe piles, gravel piles, undrained piles and natural foundation. Thus, the results indicate that the open-hole pipe pile has the best drainage capacity. The factors such as the modulus ratio of pile and soil and the radius ratio have important influence on the development of pore pressure. The higher the modulus ratio of pile and soil is, the smaller the radius ratio is, and the faster the pore pressure dissipation rate is. The influence of open-hole coefficient on the development of pore pressure is not obvious. The load frequency only affects the peak value of initial pore pressure and has little influence on the rate of pore pressure oscillation attenuation.

Abstract:In this paper, design ideas of the rigid-flexible and long-short pile composite foundation on the deep soft soil are presented. Based on the in-site loading test of an important project in City of Wenzhou, the major engineering characteristics of this type of composite foundation are studied. The stress ratio, the load ratio of pile-soil, stresses of soil and the pore water pressure in the process of construction are analyzed carefully. Consistent regularities of the composite foundation are shown during processes of loading test and construction. The results of tests indicate that pore water pressure dissipates rapidly, and that two kinds of piles can interact with soil quite well. It will be provided as references for future design and research.

It can be concluded that for the piles with pile shafts floating upward, they can be re-pressed; for the piles with serious pile top slopes and rupture of the pile shafts, they must be replaced by bored piles; for the piles with smaller pile top slopes and soundness of the pile shafts, they can be directly used after rectification and righting; for the piles with bigger pile top slopes and defect of the pile shafts, the first step is rectification and righting; and then strengthening the pile shafts by placing reinforcement cage and pouring concrete in the cores of the piles; and for the treated piles with lower bearing capacity, the bearing capacity of the bearing platform should be strengthened by adding bored piles. The measured settlement of building is small and uniform, and the maximum settlement is only 9 mm.
Engineering Character of a New-Style Pretensioned Spun Concrete Nodular Pile

Abstract:As one of the primary pile style in soft soil, the pretensioned spun concrete piles are applied widely in many fields, such as building engineering, traffic engineering, port engineering, hydraulic engineering, etc. However, there are many limitations in technology, such as its lower shaft resistance, lower resistance to bending and shearing, poor linking manner and durability of connection between pile sections, etc. A new-style pretensioned spun concrete nodular pile is introduced in this paper. The main construction technology, mechanical bonding manner and bearing character are improved aiming on the shortcoming of the traditional pretensioned spun concrete pile. Through the compressive and tensile static loading test, the bearing capacity of the new- style pretensioned spun concrete nodular pile has much higher than that of the ordinary one by 26% at least. Especially, its ultimate uplift resistance can be increased enormously, which is the engineer quite concerned about. Finally, the bearing mechanism and how the new nodular pile improve the skin friction are developed. So the new-style pretensioned spun concrete nodular piles have many merits comparing to the traditional one, which is helpful to its spread and application in soft soil.

Behavior of Sand Filled Nodular Piles under Compression in Soft Soil Areas

Abstract:The geological properties of the soil are poor in soft soil areas, and the ultimate skin friction and tip resistance provided by the foundation soil are also limited in these areas. The material strength of the precast pile shaft can't be fully mobilized in soft soil areas. Filling sand into the foundation soil in precast pile construction process can improve the properties of the foundation soil and promote the frictional capacity of the pile-soil interface as well. The compressive bearing capacity of pile foundation can then also be enhanced. A group of field tests as well as ABAQUS simulation are used to investigate the bearing capacity of the sand filled nodular pile. The following conclusions can be gained based on the measured and simulation results: the compressive bearing capacity of the sand filled nodular pile is obviously better than the compressive bearing capacity of the conventional pipe pile in soft soil areas; the axial force of the sand filled nodular pile decreases sharply at the nodes along the nodular pile, and the nodes along the nodular pile can promote the shaft bearing capacity of the pile foundation; the shaft bearing capacity of the sand filled nodular pile is much better than that of the conventional pipe pile in soft soil areas, and the enlarged shaft resistance coefficient is about 1.15-1.40.

Abstract:The geological property of the soil in soft soil areas is poor,and the ultimate skin friction provided by the foundation soil is small,which hampers the behavior of PHC pipe pile.The pre-stressed high-strength concrete nodular pile(PHDC pile)consists of a nodule every certain distance along the shaft,and the nodules along the shaft can promote the frictional capacity.A series of field tests were conducted to investigate the bearing capacity of PHDC pile in soft soil areas,and the following conclusions can be gained based on the field test results:the PHDC pile installation process induces more disturbances to the surrounding soil,and the ultimate bearing capacity of PHDC pile is much smaller than that of the PHC pile after being allowed to cure for 15 d,which indicates that the strength of the soil around the pile is relatively small;the ultimate bearing capacity of 350(400) mm PHDC pile is identical to that of the 400 mm PHC pipe pile after being cured for 40 d,which indicates that the bearing capacity of PHDC pile is better than the bearing capacity of PHC pipe pile;the pile head displacements needed to fully mobilize the ultimate bearing capacity are 9.46% and 7.37% pile diameter respectively of the two PHDC piles,which are larger than that of the PHC pipe pile.

Abstract:Piles are usually installed in both onshore and offshore sites to transit the structural loads through soft or loose soil layers to competent soil strata. Although the installation of a single pile is usually considered to be undrained, consolidation may take place during the installations of multiple piles, especially in the pauses between neighboring pile installations i.e. intervening consolidation. To date, the role that the intervening consolidation can play in affecting soil stress and strength states as well as set-up of pile capacities remains largely unclear. This article reports effective stress large deformation analyses of pile group installations with consideration of intervening consolidation. The results indicate pore pressure generation and accumulation, soil strength improvement, set-up effects on pile shaft and bearing resistances are clearly affected by intervening consolidation condition. It may be non-conservative to assume soil remains at in-situ strength state for the estimation of short-term pile capacity in design practice, if no intervening consolidation takes place. Timely dissipation of excess pore pressure amongst neighboring pile installations is beneficial notably for development of pile base resistances. The present findings are likely helpful in deepening the understanding of intervening consolidation and facilitating the incorporation of set-up effects into pile design practices.
Influence of Vacuum Preloading on Vertical Bearing Capacities of Piles Installed on Coastal Soft Soil

Abstract:Land reclamation has increased significantly in the eastern coastal areas of China. The increased exploitation of offshore resources has made cast-in-situ piles more preferable in these regions. However, precise prediction of axial forces and shaft resistances of piles is particularly difficult because geological conditions are complex after the foundation is treated by vacuum preloading. In this study, two groups of cast-in-situ piles, each of which consisted of two piles installed in soft soil in Oufei Project, Wenzhou, China, were compared by conducting tests using the slow static loading method to evaluate the influence of applying vacuum preloading to deal with soft soil foundation on the vertical bearing capacities of the piles. Two piles were located in an untreated area, while the other two were located in a vacuum preloading treating area. All the piles had the same length and diameter. In addition, the axial forces and shaft resistances of piles were calculated based on the measured strains. The field tests revealed that the ultimate bearing capacities and shaft resistances of test piles were significantly improved compared to those of the piles in untreated area. The experimental results presented in this study are expected to be highly beneficial for practical engineering.
