The Usage of Reporting Verbs in News Texts

Abstract:There are a great amount of reported speech in the news text with the aim of enhancing its impartiality,objectivity and accuracy.It is found that the nature and functions of reported speech vary with discourse type,so the research should be based on concrete discourse and content.The reporting verbs used in reported speech are of special importance to the understanding of news texts.This paper focuses on the features and the use of reporting verbs in news texts.The research of reporting verbs,from the emotional point of view,shows that reporters often use neutral reporting verbs like "say","according to","indicate" and "point out" to enhance the objectivity and accuracy of the news.The hidden meaning of reporting verbs also imply the reporter's attitude and standpoint.
