Abstract:Since the emergence of newspaper,the headline has been the necessity of a news report.The Newspaper headline which takes the crucial part in a news report has been given the responsibility to capture readers,especially in the environment of highly intense competition of this industry.Even with the application of high technology in the news industry,the significance of the headline is enormously strengthened rather than weakened.On the one hand,the mission of the headline determines its significance.And on the other,its characteristics help to achieve the responsibility.Therefore the particular language adopted in the headline,namely 'headlinese',must contain certain features which could appeal readers’ attention.This paper will focus on the characteristics of the English newspaper headline and find out how it captures readers.

Abstract:The modern media are not limited to the traditional print ones(newspaper).The diversity of the media forms and the advancement of the internet especially,cause the whole amount of all the news to be difficult to measure.In this era of information explosion,how to convey some valuable news to the audience effectively in time so as to make the news exert its due role becomes an inevitable question for the news writers and editors to examine their wisdom of language expression in the circumstances of the huge amount of news.In order to make the news fully understood by the audience at the utmost,the news writers and editors must place emphasis on expression skills by working hard on the rhetoric of characters and sentences to catch the audience's attention quickly at the earliest time.The headlines require expression skills,but they should comply with the principles of nature and properness instead of rhetoric skills for rhetoric.

Abstract:The utilization of figurative language in sports reporting significantly enhances communication’s allure and competitiveness within this realm. Figurative language entails expressions not meant to be taken literally but carrying implied meanings that enrich interpretation for readers or listeners. It crucially illustrates action and drama in sports news, engendering a more immersive reading experience and influencing how events are comprehended. This research probes into the use of figurative language, particularly expressions and metaphors, within sports reporting's context. The study’s focal point was the June 1, 2018 edition of the esteemed Indonesian newspaper, Java Pos, renowned for its vibrant sports reporting, particularly in football. Data consisted of expressions and metaphors in the form of verbs, nouns, adjectives, and numerals, sourced from Java Pos' sports reporting (June 1, 2018 edition), especially relating to football. The methodology involved participatory observation reading 7 football-specific sports pieces and scrutinizing each for expressions and metaphors. Additionally, documentation was employed collecting and analyzing articles from the designated edition to assess metaphors and expressions through a figurative language lens. Post data collection, data was condensed and classified by category (nouns, verbs, adjectives, and numerals) then verified and interpreted contextually. Content analysis was applied for data analysis, comprehending the contextual use and its impact on reader comprehension. The findings unveiled the presence of expressions and metaphors, encompassing verb phrases, nouns, adjectives, and numerals, in the news reports. This study uncovers the usage of figurative language, enriching communication, fostering creativity, and contributing to elevated sports reporting quality and deeper audience understanding.

Abstract:With the rapid development and gradual maturity of the information age, the news media has become the basic media for people to obtain information from all over the world. Due to the differences between English and Chinese in cultural background, rhetoric tradition, and linguistic expression, news translation is confronted with the challenge of overcoming language barriers in information transmission. The headline is the soul of news and determines the attention of news. Mastering the headline information can help readers effectively understand the gist of the news. Therefore, when translating English news headlines, we should first understand the characteristics of the headlines and apply translation strategies in a targeted way. By analyzing the characteristics of news headlines, this paper studies the principles and strategies of translation of English news headlines.

Abstract:This paper extracts the human body metaphors from 38,458 news headlines and makes a statistical analysis of the classification. Our exploration shows that the frequency of metaphors in each part is affected by its functional characteristics and movement flexibility. Metaphors with "eyes, lower limbs, hands" as the source domain occupy a large proportion. Meanwhile, the typical features and actions of the body parts are mapped to the target domain of news headlines through metaphor. In addition, many metaphors in news headlines have a positive or negative emotional tendency, which can reflect the attitude of news content to a certain extent.

Abstract:With the rapid developments of science and technology, it appears that the best way to get much information is to appreciate some news items, because they are objectively facts and data that are easy for us to comprehend. However, if there is no vague language in newspapers, the reliability and veracity will be reduced to the degree, and the news items will not be trust-worthy at all. So this research paper aims to analyze certain samples selected from some English newspapers by means of Grice’s Cooperative Principle so as to demonstrate that vague language can effectively stand out the accuracy of the English newspapers. Consequently, the paper reveals that the vague language helps and strengthens the artistic effects of the news items which cannot be expressed directly by the exact number or detailed information in the English newspapers. In addition, all the readers may benefit from this research paper and have the deep appreciations of the vagueness as well.

Abstract:Arguably the first thing that a reader notices of a news item, the headline serves the semantic function of providing pertinent information and the pragmatic function of appealing to target addressees. Moreover, it often embodies the stance of the news writer or the news agency on a particular issue and could program the reader's perception and interpretation of the ensuing news story in a pre-determined direction. In view of the distinctive significance of headlines in news discourse, in this paper, we analyze how the headlines of The Economist , an elite newsmagazine, frame China in relation to the COVID-19 pandemic. The sample of headlines was examined for their structural components, syntactic features, as well as linguistic characteristics, and compared with a selection of the outlet's headlines on COVID responses of certain other countries. Through identifying the framing patterns adopted in the headlines and unpacking the ideological overtones encoded therein, this systematic analysis has illuminated the role and effects of the tactful employment of language in constructing country image and striking a balance between purported impartiality and ideological dispositions. Its findings and implications are expected to contribute to scholarship on media framing and inform the practice of journalistic writing.

Abstract:In this article, we study the problem of personalized news headline generation, which aims to produce not only concise and fact-consistent titles for news articles but also decorate these titles as personalized irresistible reading invitations by incorporating readers’ preferences. We propose an approach named PNG ( P ersonalized N ews headline G enerator) by utilizing distant supervision in readers’ past click behaviors to resolve. First, user preference representations are learned through a knowledge-aware user encoder that comprehensively captures the genuine, sequential, and flash interests of users reflected in their historical clicked news. Then, a user-perturbed pointer-generator network is devised to accomplish the headline generation in which the learned user representations implicitly affect the word prediction. The proposed model is optimized by reinforcement learning solvers where indicators on factual, personalized, and linguistic aspects of the generated headline are regarded as rewards. Extensive experiments are conducted on the real-world dataset PENS, 1 which is a large-scale benchmark collected from Microsoft News. Both the quantitative and qualitative results validate the effectiveness of our approach.

Abstract:As an essential part of news, English news headlines are especially important. This paper makes an analysis of metaphor translation from the perspective of cognitive linguistics. Combining cognitive metaphor theory, the author deals with cognitive features that characterized by the people’s life experience and cognitive perception. Then, the translatability of metaphor is discussed in English news headlines in order to demonstrate that metaphorical translation is complicated for the cultural differences. Sometimes a faithful translation may be at the cost of losing metaphorical meaning. Then, effective metaphor translation methods are offered. They are literal translation, free translation and the change of vehicles, all of which involves the interpretation of similarity and/or difference of two languages. By using these methods appropriately, translators will be saved out of awkward translation adversity. With all the work above done, it will be easier for English news translators to translate more appropriately and for people to have a better understanding of the English used in this field. Accurate translation will definitely promote the spread of news and strengthen its timeliness.

Abstract:News report has become an important source for people to obtain information, and as the “eye” of a piece of news, the title highly summarizes its theme, and expresses the attitude of the author. By analyzing the relevant literature, it is found that most of the current studies focus on the stylistic characteristics and translation principles of news translation. The studies on news headline translation are limited. Besides, the researches on the translation of news headlines mainly focus on the characteristics and specific translation methods. Few studies focus on rhetorical strategies of news headlines translation. Therefore, literature research and qualitative analysis will be adopted to study the translation of news headlines from the perspective of rhetoric. By selecting a certain amount of news headlines translation, to the paper explores the news headlines translation from the rhetoric appeals and a rhetorical model for guiding the translation of news headlines has been given. This study finds that the three rhetorical appeals have certain guiding significance for news headlines translation. In terms of ethos, the translator enhances the audience’s sense of credibility in the news by stating the views of authoritative people or platforms, or quoting the words in authoritative works; in terms of pathos, the translator takes “audience” as the center. Understanding the audience better and sharing common grounds with them is helpful to complete the persuasion to the audience; in terms of logos, the translator improves the language expressions and their internal logic so that the audience can be effectively persuaded. The rhetorical model put forward provides a new perspective for the translation of news headlines. In addition, this study expands the horizons of news translation research, and has certain reference significance for news translation practice.
A Study on Translation Strategies of News English from the Perspective of Skopos Theory

Abstract:: As an excellent vehicle for dissemination of information, news has a huge impact on the way people live, promoting cultural exchange and mutual understanding to a large extent. Considering that, it means a lot for us to make a good job of news translation in an unbiased, objective and accurate way. Compared with traditional theories of translation laying great stress on equivalence, the skopos theory proposed by the German functionalism is perceived as a major breakthrough, which provides rock solid support for the translation of practical types of writing like news. The paper first introduces the skopos theory, then focuses on linguistic features of news English, and finally cites a few specific examples to work out some appropriate translation strategies for news English under the guidance of skopos theory, thus helping news translators gain a good deal of enlightenment.

Abstract:Drawing on an analogy between discourse and syntactic trees, this paper chooses 359 Wall Street Journal articles with multiple paragraphs from the Rhetorical Structure Theory (RST) Discourse Treebank, and converts each discourse tree into three additional dependency ones, at discourse, paragraph and sentence levels, with exclusively elementary discourse units of clauses, sentences and paragraphs, respectively. It empirically tests and visually presents the genre-specific "summary + details" or "inverted pyramid" structuring of news discourse. It further extends the idea of inverted pyramid structuring to the paragraph and sentence levels. It proves that the body of the report also has a similar schematic top-down installment organization with macro-propositions on top. It also visually and statistically presents the rhetorical structures at sentence level, which differ to some extent from grammatical structures. Operated in line with the compositionality criterion and hierarchy principle of RST, the converted trees provide unique analytical advantages and constitute new research prospects.

Abstract:In daily communication, the speaker tends to use Euphemism to express the speaker's thoughts in an indirect way, in order to reduce the disturbing and offensive to the listener. Euphemism, which comes from the worship and awe of the supernatural power, has been deeply rooted in the social life, and deeply reflects the social and cultural values of a country. To a large extent, the use of euphemism depends on context. As a mass media, news reports provide us with a lot of information, covering all parts of the world, involving various fields, and deeply affect people's lives. The language of news report has the characteristics of accuracy, simplicity, authenticity and timeliness. In addition, the news media as a communication tool, but also has the characteristics of publicity, publicity and so on. Due to the vagueness and indirect features of euphemism, euphemism plays a special and important role in the news reports. The main function of euphemism is to protect the face from the author and the reader from all kinds of offensive, and ultimately safeguard the interests of politicians and the government. Specifically, these offensive terms include taboo words or topics that are more sensitive to both parties, such as political or social issues.

Abstract:Punctuation marks are also used in news headlines, which play an important role in conveying news information to readers. There are some differences between the punctuation marks used in the headlines of Japanese news in the Chinese-Japanese translation section of People’s Daily’s Japanese edition and those used in Japanese news websites. “,” and “.” are rarely added to news headlines on Japanese news websites. Use “「」” or “()” to quote or explain. Compared with this, there are obviously more punctuation marks used in Japanese news headlines of the Chinese-Japanese translation section of People’s Daily’s Japanese edition, such as “,” and “?” And “!”, “,” etc. Section in the mutual translation of this paper is to People’s Daily online Japanese version the solstice on February 7, 2021 on April 2 until 30 news title language as the research object, based on the investigation to the Japanese punctuation usage, understanding the characteristics of the Japanese, grasp the translation of Japanese language features of news headlines, facilitate in the later translation more accurately using auxiliary expression of punctuation, To build a bridge of friendly communication between the Chinese and Japanese people.
