Abstract:: As an excellent vehicle for dissemination of information, news has a huge impact on the way people live, promoting cultural exchange and mutual understanding to a large extent. Considering that, it means a lot for us to make a good job of news translation in an unbiased, objective and accurate way. Compared with traditional theories of translation laying great stress on equivalence, the skopos theory proposed by the German functionalism is perceived as a major breakthrough, which provides rock solid support for the translation of practical types of writing like news. The paper first introduces the skopos theory, then focuses on linguistic features of news English, and finally cites a few specific examples to work out some appropriate translation strategies for news English under the guidance of skopos theory, thus helping news translators gain a good deal of enlightenment.

Abstract:With the rapid development and gradual maturity of the information age, the news media has become the basic media for people to obtain information from all over the world. Due to the differences between English and Chinese in cultural background, rhetoric tradition, and linguistic expression, news translation is confronted with the challenge of overcoming language barriers in information transmission. The headline is the soul of news and determines the attention of news. Mastering the headline information can help readers effectively understand the gist of the news. Therefore, when translating English news headlines, we should first understand the characteristics of the headlines and apply translation strategies in a targeted way. By analyzing the characteristics of news headlines, this paper studies the principles and strategies of translation of English news headlines.

The Cross-cultural Translation of English News Headlines under the Guidance of Functional Equivalence Theory

Abstract:With theenhancement of China’s communication in the international area,English news have become an important way for Chinese people to get to know the world information and different cultures.So the study of English news headlines and their translation are very necessary.News headline is a very important part of news.It is the summary of the content of news story.An accurate,concise and elegant translation will quickly attract the readers,and tempt them into pursuing what follows.To better translate news headlines,translators should master some translation strategies,of which American translator Eugene A.Nida’s Functional Equivalence theory provides an effective way for English news headlines translation.While translating English news headlines using the Functional Equivalence theory,the use of equivalent words,the addition of supplementary contents and the use of rhetorical device are three effective ways to get the ideal expressing effect.

Abstract:News report has become an important source for people to obtain information, and as the “eye” of a piece of news, the title highly summarizes its theme, and expresses the attitude of the author. By analyzing the relevant literature, it is found that most of the current studies focus on the stylistic characteristics and translation principles of news translation. The studies on news headline translation are limited. Besides, the researches on the translation of news headlines mainly focus on the characteristics and specific translation methods. Few studies focus on rhetorical strategies of news headlines translation. Therefore, literature research and qualitative analysis will be adopted to study the translation of news headlines from the perspective of rhetoric. By selecting a certain amount of news headlines translation, to the paper explores the news headlines translation from the rhetoric appeals and a rhetorical model for guiding the translation of news headlines has been given. This study finds that the three rhetorical appeals have certain guiding significance for news headlines translation. In terms of ethos, the translator enhances the audience’s sense of credibility in the news by stating the views of authoritative people or platforms, or quoting the words in authoritative works; in terms of pathos, the translator takes “audience” as the center. Understanding the audience better and sharing common grounds with them is helpful to complete the persuasion to the audience; in terms of logos, the translator improves the language expressions and their internal logic so that the audience can be effectively persuaded. The rhetorical model put forward provides a new perspective for the translation of news headlines. In addition, this study expands the horizons of news translation research, and has certain reference significance for news translation practice.

Abstract:Based on the existing studies, this study has focused on the 2021 Government Work Report under the guidance of Skopos Theory, combined the features and categories of vocabulary with Chinese characteristics, and explored its translation strategies with some examples. Firstly, it has briefly described the background, purpose and significance of this study. Secondly, it has systematically summarized the research at home and the development of Skopos Theory after its introduction into China. Thirdly, a theoretical framework of translation has been elaborated and the development and principles of Skopos Theory are introduced. Fourthly, the research methods have been adopted with questionnaire and interview in order to investigate the target group's understanding of the bilingual version of the Government Work Report (i.e. GWR) and the author has proposed translation strategies and classifications of vocabulary with Chinese characteristics. Lastly, the previous thesis of the research findings has been summarized and conclusions have been drawn with a summary of the main problems existing in previous studies.

Abstract:The English translation level of domestic film and television animation not only affects the appreciation effect of English-speaking audiences, but also affects the communication and exchange of Chinese excellent culture in the world, and even affects the commercial interests of film and television production. With the increasing international exchange of various cultures, the traditional theoretical views on translation are no longer suitable for the enrichment and development of modern literary forms. Based on the Skopos Theory, this paper will discuss the translation strategies of film and television animation works and propose the translation methods of film and television animation, to enhance the communication and influence of Chinese culture.
An Analysis of Translation Strategies Used in External Publicity News from China Daily Based on Functional Equivalence Theory

Abstract:As one of Chinas most influential news media, China Daily is also an important window for people worldwide to know about the country. This research aims to select four news reports from China Daily and their corresponding English translations, all of which are economic topics, to compare the Chinese and English discourses. At the same time, the research analyzes the translation strategies used during the translation process based on Eugene Nidas functional equivalence translation theory, analyzes the logical differences between Chinese and English languages and corresponding solution strategies, and summarizes the strategies for external news translation. In so doing, the results can better guide the practice of external publicity translation. Research has found that in bilingual news translation, retranslation, including addition, subtraction, and part-of-speech conversion, are commonly used as translation strategies. These strategies ensure that the translator can give full play to his subjective initiative in the translation process and is not limited to the original text. Considering things from the perspective of the target language readers, the translator can also make the translation more in line with the expression habits of the target language. Meanwhile, the translator cannot blindly adapt to the readers and thus damage the information of the original text.

Abstract:Under the trend of global integration, international exchanges are becoming more and more thorough, and international publicity of China has been strengthened and expanded. As a powerful tool for international communication, international publicity news has attracted more attention to the selection and use of news content translation methods. Chinese international publicity work has produced great results in recent years, but the good and bad translations are intermingled. Due to the barrier of cross-cultural, “Chinglish” can be found in some translations, which not only impose a negative impact on the external publicity work, but also is not conducive to the objective and correct understanding of China in the world. From the perspective of cross-cultural pragmatics, this paper selects the international publicity news and translation method as the research object. The author makes a systematic study on the C- E (from Chinese to English) translation of publicity news. Based on the study of cross-cultural pragmatics and the characteristics of publicity news, the purpose is to make the original and the target discourses share the same function in communication. Therefore, to achieve effective and accurate publicity news translation and improve the quality in publicity news translation in order to better disseminates the culture in both sides.

Abstract:Nowadays, with the trend of world political multi-polarization and the regional economic integration, international communication has become an essential way for the development of each country. News become indispensable to the public to acquire the information happened domestic and abroad everyday. Thus, accurate news translation based on different language backgrounds has become an important channel to get news. Give a broad overview of the current translation in China’s current situation, the research field has been expanded since the 70s of last century. However, relative researches still have a long way to go. Eugene Nida, a contemporary famous American theorist in the field of translation, his functional equivalence theory becomes a continuous improved theory which has great significance of guiding the news translation practice.This article mainly bases on Nida’s functional equivalence theory and combines with the news language features to analyze China's most representative newspaper- China Daily. By analyzing vocabulary, syntax and discourse, we could explore the application of Nida’s functional equivalence theory in guiding the practice of news translation. The study of Nida’s functional equivalence theory not only guides news translation but also instructs other translation practice. Nida’s functional equivalence theory is worthy of being studied.

Abstract:With the study of Skopos theory, the paper searches for the translation strategies of sports advertisements. Based on the study of language characteristics of sports advertisements, the paper compares the linguistic differences between Chinese and English sports advertisements. This paper briefly discusses some problems of sports advertisement translation. By analyzing the translation strategies adopted by different translators, the paper attempts to find appropriate solutions to problems of translating. These solutions touch on four aspects, including adherence to Skopos theory, respecting foreign cultures, mastering the linguistic features of sports advertisements in English and Chinese, and achieving the function of communication. The paper draws the following conclusions: there are differences and similarities between Chinese and English sports advertisements. Translators can choose different methods to overcome cultural and linguistic barriers with the guidance of Skopos theory. Moreover, the Skopos theory is the best way to assess the quality of translation.

Abstract:A Bite of China is a documentary about Chinese food culture. It not only describes China's rich food, but also shows the colorful rural life and spiritual connotation of Chinese people. It could be a window to show foreigners the beauty of China and the cultural traditions in every part of it. But the language in movies and TV shows has its distinctive features: the language in movies and TV shows is sound and fleeting, so the translation of movie subtitles must be appropriate and easy to understand. Skopos theory holds that the audience is the most important factor in determining the translation purpose. Therefore, the translation criterion under skopos theory has changed from “equivalence” to “appropriateness”, which enables translators to have greater autonomy in determining subtitle translation strategies on the premise of respecting the original text, thus not only achieving the communicative purpose of the target text, but also enabling the audience to understand the original film and television works.

Abstract:: As video games gain popularity worldwide and become one of the most common entertainment forms in the digital era, the game’s title is given both commercial value and entertainment value. In the process of translation, in order to achieve these two values, the correct translation theory and strategy need to be adopted. Translating Chinese game titles accurately and effectively into English is challenging for Chinese translators. The idea “the end justifies the means” from Skopos Theory indicates that the translation effects decide translation strategies. Abstract:As an important part of a country's soft power, the output of news is particularly important. As one of the hotspots in the field of translation under the background of globalization, news translation is inextricably linked with pragmatic theory. Relevance theory as one of the typical theories, through the effective combination of relevance theory and news translation, expands a new perspective for the in-depth interpretation of news translation, and further promotes the dynamic progress of pragmatics. Starting from Relevance Theory and taking bilingual news as the research object, this paper confirms the applicability of Relevance Theory in the translation of news headlines and texts through the analysis of common strategies in news translation.

Xi Jinping: the Governance of China, as a compilation on China’s international publicity, is an authoritative work with Chinese characteristics that demonstrates the country’s latest developments. Abstract:To further understand the external news publicity effect of mainland media, the open-source data mining platform Social Bearing is applied to collect data of China’s 2021 Two Sessions on Twitter platform and relevant reports of the official accounts of Xinhua News Agency, China Global Television Network and People’s Daily, together with reports on 2020 Two Sessions. It is found that the topics chosen by mainland media are different from that of the Western media, and the acceptance of the reports of the three central mainland media in foreign readers is not remarkably high. Based on this research, this paper applied Kenneth Burke’s identification theory into news translation practice. It shows four translation approaches such as literal translation, amplification, omission, and adaptation can be used in the process of news translation to achieve narrative identification. Results of this study have some significance to translation for China’s global communication.

Abstract:Classical Chinese poetry, an important part of Chinese culture, has always been a great task for translators, home and abroad. It is the foreign translators who, in the early 20 century, first translated the classical Chinese poetry into English. The Chinese scholars began to do the translation in the seventies of the 20 century. From the existent translations, foreign or Chinese, we can find that most translators had their clear purposes when translating. These purposes of translation influenced their choice of translation skills when dealing with the content and form of the poetry.
