Abstract:Since the 1950s, “Babylonian mathematics” has often served to open expositions of the general history of mathematics. Since it is written in a language and a script which only specialists understand, it has always been dealt with differently by the “insiders”, the Assyriologists who approached the texts where it manifests itself as philologists and historians of Mesopotamian culture, and by “outsiders”, historians of mathematics who had to rely on second-hand understanding of the material (actually, of as much of this material as they wanted to take into account), but who saw it as a constituent of the history of mathematics. The article deals with how these different approaches have looked in various periods: pre-decipherment speculations; the early period of deciphering, 1847–1929; the “golden decade”, 1929–1938, where workers with double competence (primarily Neugebauer and Thureau-Dangin ) attacked the corpus and demonstrated the Babylonians to have possessed unexpectedly sophisticated mathematical knowledge; and the ensuing four decades, where some mopping-up without change of perspective was all that was done by a handful of Assyriologists and Assyriologically competent historians of mathematics, while most Assyriologists lost interest completely, and historians of mathematics believed to possess the definitive truth about the topic in Neugebauer ’s popularizations.

Abstract:The article describes the social and cultural roles of Mesopotamian mathematics and the interplay of these roles with such patterns of mathematical thought as can be traced through the sources; it covers the period from the first formation of a genuine state, shortly after the mid-fourth millennium b.c.e., until the end of the Old Babylonian epoch, c. 1600 b.c.e. The picture presented is a historical reconstruction; little of what it asserts can be found directly in a single source. Full documentation would ask for a bibliography longer than the article. This being both impossible and without purpose, some publications of importance are listed in the concluding “Bibliographic Remarks” (Section 4); in these, further bibliography can be found. The description of the many interconnected aspects of Mesopotamian mathematics evidently has no implications for how mathematics should be taught. It is meant as inspiration for how mathematics educators and didacticians think about mathematics, and to give input to the teaching about mathematics.

Abstract:The "new math" curriculum, one version of which was developed in the 1950s and 1960s by the School Mathematics Study Group under the auspices of the National Science Foundation, occasioned a great deal of controversy among mathematicians. Well before its rejection by parents and teachers, some mathematicians were vocal critics, decrying the new curriculum because of the way it described the practice and history of the discipline. The nature of mathematics, despite the field's triumphs in helping to win World War II and its midcentury promotion as the key to a modern technological society, was surprisingly contested in this period. Supporters of the School Mathematics Study Group, like its director, Edward Begle, emphasized the importance of portraying mathematics as a system of abstract structures, while opponents like Morris Kline argued that math was essentially a tool for understanding the natural world. The debate about the curriculum--and the role of mathematicians in its design--was also a debate about the underlying identity of the subject itself.

Abstract:There were different ways of doing mathematics in the ancient Greek and Roman world. This essay will explore historiographical approaches to this diversity, from the claim that there were different traditions, to explorations of the social status of mathematicians, to attempts to go beyond written traditions in order to reconstruct practices. I will draw on Jean Lave's studies on situation-specific mathematics to try and tease out the power relationships and underlying assumptions behind different histories of the evidence available to us.

Abstract:A theme like “town and science” invites to comparative analysis, and suggests questions like these: Is the urban context a particularly fertile soil for the development of scientific thinking? Or rather the contrary? Is it fertile or barren under specific circumstances? Or does it favour a particular kind of scientific activity? General answers to such questions can hardly be found; still, they may provide case studies with a guiding perspective. Case studies, on the other hand, may lead to better understanding of the implications of the general questions if not to answers. In the following I therefore try to read the emergence of Mesopotamian mathematics into the context of the “urban revolution” and the rise of states (c. 3300 to c. 2300 B.C.). Mesopotamian city states appeared in the late fourth millennium B.C., and were eventually absorbed in larger territorial states a thousand years later. Contemporary with the incipient state formation was the creation of a script and of genuine, coherent mathematics. Both were based on earlier accounting techniques, both were used by Temple officials for administrative purposes, and both were marked decisively by this application. At the same time, both presuppose modes of thought which are not produced directly by their application but only as mediated by a school system. In the mid‐third millennium, an autonomous scribal profession appears for the first time. At the same time emerge the first literary texts and the first “pure” mathematical problems ( i.e. , problems not directed at or following the pattern of genuine application). It seems as if the scribes, as soon as they were emancipated as a craft, tried out the range of their professional tools. Neither the use of writing for literary purposes nor the possibility to use numbers for “higher” computation were forgotten when the city states were absorbed in larger social systems. Both, however, were subsumed by the interest of the new territorial state, the former as a means to propagate royal ideology, the latter in the royal administration. The final section of the article compares this early Mesopotamian development with other instances of the “urban revolution” and with the development of scientific thought in the Ancient Greek city state and in the context of Medieval city communes.

Abstract:Through a broad structural analysis and a close reading of Old Babylonian mathematica] "procedure texts" dealing mainly with problems of the second degree it is shown that Old Babylonian "algebra" was neither a "rhetorical algebra" dealing with numbers and arithmetical relations between numbers nor built on a set of fixed algorithmic procedures. Instead, the texts must be read as "naive" prescriptions for geometric analysis—naive in the sense that the results are seen by immediate intuition to be correct, but the question of correctness never raised—dealing with measured or measurable but unknown line segments, and making use of a set of operations and techniques different in structure from that of arithmetical algebra. The investigation involves a thorough discussion and re-interpretation of the technical terminology of Old Babylonian mathematics, elucidates many terms and procedures which have up to now been enigmatic, and makes many features stand out which had not been noticed before. The second-last chapter discusses the metamathematical problem, whether and to which extent we are then entitled to speak of an Old Babylonian algebra ; it also takes up the over-all implications of the investigation for the understanding of Old Babylonian patterns of thought. It is argued that these are not mythopoeic in the sense of H. and H. A. Frankfort, nor savage or cold in a Lévi-Straussian sense, nor however as abstract and modern as current interpretations of the mathematical texts would have them to be. The last chapter investigates briefly the further development of Babylonian "algebra" through the Seleucid era, demonstrating a clear arithmetization of the patterns of mathematical thought, the possible role of Babylonian geometrical analysis as inspiration for early Greek geometry, and the legacy of Babylonian "algebraic" thought to Medieval Islamic algebra.

Abstract:This essay traces the history of three interconnected strands. Firstly, changes in the concept of number, secondly, the study of the qualities of number, which evolved into number theory, and thirdly, the nature of mathematics itself, from early Greek mathematics to the 20th century. These were embedded in philosophical shifts, from the classical Greek ontologies through increasing pragmatism to formalism and logical positivism. Given that Goedel demonstrated the limitations of the latter as a foundation for mathematics, this essay explores phenomenology and Lakatosian ideas, which together offer a more sound epistemological and ontological basis for mathematics and a methodology for mathematical <a class="link-external link-http" href="http://development.The" rel="external noopener nofollow">this http URL</a> question also then arises of the possible resurrection of earlier, neglected mathematical projects, including widening the domain of number theory to include integer qualities revealed in the growth of mathematics in general, which has predominantly been the growth of quantitative mathematics or logistike, the complement of arithmetike in classical Greece.

Abstract:At the beginning of the 20th century,among European sinologists there were two opposite attitudes towards the achievements of ancient Chinese mathematics.Some sinologists attributed the achievements of ancient Chinese mathematics to the influence of other civilizations,believing that Chinese mathematics was inferior to western mathematics,while the others thought positively of Chinese mathematics,believing that western and Chinese mathematics both have their own characteristics and uniqueness and should be treated equally.By examining the mathematical articles published in the authorized international sinological journal T'oung Pao by three representative sinologists,this article explores the controversies over ancient Chinese mathematics in the hope of shedding light on the study of the attitudes of sinologists towards ancient Chinese civilization.

Abstract:Over the last 40 years, exploring the possible interrelations between the history of mathematics and mathematics education has gradually emerged as an interdisciplinary domain of educational research and practice, and entered a maturity stage during the last two decades. This development calls for an account of the general issues concerning the rationale and main themes underlying research and applications in its context, and the foundational issues addressed as a result of its interdisciplinary character. Therefore, after explaining the perspective characterizing work in this domain (what has been called the HPM perspective), we present the main themes along which current research is conducted and we analyze the main issues and concerns raised by current research in this domain, with due reference to recent publications. Papers in this issue further develop the key research strands shaped by these main issues and concerns from a variety of perspectives; in particular, papers address the theoretical points related to the interdisciplinary character of this domain (e.g., the role of history in promoting and developing STEM education more profoundly), and the design of innovative teaching approaches based on original sources (e.g., how non-didacticized resource material can motivate mathematically rich tasks without requiring too specialized knowledge in the history of mathematics). These papers also suggest fresh avenues for research, some bearing on potential methodological connections between mathematics, education, and history (e.g., the possibility of different readings of original sources that reveal the complex interrelations among historical knowledge, teaching objectives, and pedagogical practices), and some bearing on the implementation, evaluation, and dissemination of designs connected to the history of mathematics, in teaching at all levels of education (e.g., development of curricular material based on original texts, offering new learning opportunities in relation to core topics in university mathematics). We conclude with a brief description of each contributed paper.

Mathematical Susa Texts VII and VIII. A Reinterpretation

Abstract:In an extensive paper published due to the kindness of the editorial staff of the present journal, I have suggested a geometrical reinterpretation of so-called Old Babylonian "algebra".1 Among the texts analyzed in the paper were the mathematical texts No. XVI and No. IX from Susa, which turned out to contain highly illuminating didactical commentaries of a kind not known from the Babylonian core area be it because teaching in a peripheral area felt a need to make explicit what could be left to a stable oral tradition in the core, or simply because the Susa teachers had a bent for loquacity. Text No. XVI turned out not to contain solutions of problems but only a didactical discussion of transformations of linear "equations" of two unknowns (as usually, the us ("length") and ("width") of a rectangle, with the usual values 30' and 20' [nindan]2 ) . No. IX contained initial didactical discussions of the transformations of complex into simpler second-degree "equations" followed by use of the technique just taught for the solution of a sophisticated set of equations. These texts are not the only Susa texts to contain illuminating didactical commentaries. In the present paper I shall analyze two further texts, of which one contains an explicit explanatory part, while the other employs some of the concepts introduced in the former. Abstract:As all contributors to the present volume know, Laura Toti Rigatelli has worked in in various fields within the history of mathematics. However, my own working catalogue, my bookshelves and my archive indicate clearly that what has affected me most is her work on the late medieval and Renaissance Italian practitioners' abbaco tradition. My homage to her will therefore deal with the status of practitioners' knowledge. It is to a large extent to the credit of Laura Toti Rigatelli (together with Raffaella Franci and Gino Arrighi) that interest in practical mathematics is not uncommon within Italian historiography of mathematics. In the perspective of the global community of historians of mathematics, however, things appear to look different; here, work on theoretical knowledge by far overshadows that on the knowledge of pratitioners. Moreover, since the knowledge of specialists' crafts is generally considered of scarce interest, it is largely overlooked that it was largely independent of what we are accustomed to see as contemporary "scientific knowledge", at least during the pre-Modern epoch and to some extent even later, but that it is none the less not to be understood as mere and general "folk knowledge". As Laura Toti Rigatelli I have mainly approached the relationship between the two types and organizations of knowledge from the point of view of mathematics, which is the field I know best (Høyrup 1990; 1997a). This may be claimed to have distorted my view, since a corpus of knowledge as coherent as that of "scientific" (Euclidean, Archimedean, etc.) mathematics is not found in other fields in the pre-Modern world. Scientific mathematics can be argued to have taken over material and inspiration from the practical traditions and to have digested it in such a way that wholly new structures emerged; In other fields, "philosophers" made common-sense use within their own framework of every-day observations or of knowledge deriving from the practical traditions - but they did not transform this borrowed knowledge radically.

Abstract:The paper discusses the question "What is mathematics?" from a point of view inspired by anthropology. In this perspective, the character of mathematical thinking and argument is strongly affected - almost essentially determined, indeed - by the dynamics of the specific social, mostly professional environments by which it is carried. Environments where future practitioners are taught as apprentices produce an approach different from that resulting from teaching in a school - the latter inviting to intra-mathematical explanation in a way the former does not. Moreover, once the interaction with the early classical Greek philosophical quest for causes and general explanations had caused mathematical explanation to become an autonomous endeavour in the shape of explicit proof and deductivity, proof and deductivity presented themselves as options - sometimes exploited, sometimes not - even in the teaching of mathematics for practitioners.(Christoph Scriba in memoriam)

Abstract:An introductory section discusses the utility of the algorithm concept in the historiographic analysis of non-recent mathematics, in particular the sense that can be given to claims that a particular mathematical culture was of algorithmic type. It concludes that the adequacy of this epithet when applied to a mathematical culture does not depend on whether texts used in teaching are built up around paradigmatic examples but on whether the production of rules or algorithms was regarded as a central activity for those whom we would count as "mathematicians" (that is, producers of mathematical knowledge). Three medieval examples of attitudes to algorithms follow. First, Jordanus de Nemore's De numeris datis is shown to develop a method to combine algorithms and deductivity, in an alternative to algebra. Second, Barthelemy de Romans' graphic schemes for organizing the complex algorithms used to solve the sophisticated variants of the problem of the "unknown heritage" are discussed. Third is considered Nicholas Chuquet's dismissal of these schemes and algorithms, in favour of the algebraic tool.

From Concrete to Abstract in Indian Mathematics

Abstract:Despite the extensive amount of scholarly work done on Indian mathematics in the last 200 years, the conditions under which it originated and evolved is still not clear. Often, one reads the ancient texts with the present concepts and methods in mind. The fact of absence of script over a long stretch of Indian history in ancient times also gets overlooked in such readings. The purpose of this article is to explore the journey of mathematics by examining what the ancient texts tell us about the nature of mathematics in their times. What one finds from the investigation of arithmetic, geometry and algebra is that while it was concrete and context bound, rooted in solving practical problems in ancient times, Indian mathematics transitioned to context free, abstract stage with the advent of algebra supported by writing.
