Abstract:Over the last 40 years, exploring the possible interrelations between the history of mathematics and mathematics education has gradually emerged as an interdisciplinary domain of educational research and practice, and entered a maturity stage during the last two decades. This development calls for an account of the general issues concerning the rationale and main themes underlying research and applications in its context, and the foundational issues addressed as a result of its interdisciplinary character. Therefore, after explaining the perspective characterizing work in this domain (what has been called the HPM perspective), we present the main themes along which current research is conducted and we analyze the main issues and concerns raised by current research in this domain, with due reference to recent publications. Papers in this issue further develop the key research strands shaped by these main issues and concerns from a variety of perspectives; in particular, papers address the theoretical points related to the interdisciplinary character of this domain (e.g., the role of history in promoting and developing STEM education more profoundly), and the design of innovative teaching approaches based on original sources (e.g., how non-didacticized resource material can motivate mathematically rich tasks without requiring too specialized knowledge in the history of mathematics). These papers also suggest fresh avenues for research, some bearing on potential methodological connections between mathematics, education, and history (e.g., the possibility of different readings of original sources that reveal the complex interrelations among historical knowledge, teaching objectives, and pedagogical practices), and some bearing on the implementation, evaluation, and dissemination of designs connected to the history of mathematics, in teaching at all levels of education (e.g., development of curricular material based on original texts, offering new learning opportunities in relation to core topics in university mathematics). We conclude with a brief description of each contributed paper.

Abstract:Whig historiography,represented by the algebraic reading of Greek mathematics,had been dominating the history of mathematics for a long time.It led to the blindness and poverty of the history of mathematics.Since 1970s,various efforts have been made to create new approaches different from Whig history,yet the history of mathematics nowadays is still colored with Whiggish tendency.To find out the root of this failure,we appeal to Jacob Klein's revelation of the true beginning of the history of mathematics itself,which shows that it is in the early modern mathematics itself that the root of the Whiggish tendency in the history of mathematics consists.To avoid Whiggish tendency,the history of mathematics has to become a research with the ability to rediscover its own root,that is,an intellectual history.A number of intellectual resources,including Alexandre Koyré's intellectual history of science,can be very helpful for this transformation.

Abstract:The "new math" curriculum, one version of which was developed in the 1950s and 1960s by the School Mathematics Study Group under the auspices of the National Science Foundation, occasioned a great deal of controversy among mathematicians. Well before its rejection by parents and teachers, some mathematicians were vocal critics, decrying the new curriculum because of the way it described the practice and history of the discipline. The nature of mathematics, despite the field's triumphs in helping to win World War II and its midcentury promotion as the key to a modern technological society, was surprisingly contested in this period. Supporters of the School Mathematics Study Group, like its director, Edward Begle, emphasized the importance of portraying mathematics as a system of abstract structures, while opponents like Morris Kline argued that math was essentially a tool for understanding the natural world. The debate about the curriculum--and the role of mathematicians in its design--was also a debate about the underlying identity of the subject itself.

Abstract:There were different ways of doing mathematics in the ancient Greek and Roman world. This essay will explore historiographical approaches to this diversity, from the claim that there were different traditions, to explorations of the social status of mathematicians, to attempts to go beyond written traditions in order to reconstruct practices. I will draw on Jean Lave's studies on situation-specific mathematics to try and tease out the power relationships and underlying assumptions behind different histories of the evidence available to us.

Abstract:Since the 1950s, “Babylonian mathematics” has often served to open expositions of the general history of mathematics. Since it is written in a language and a script which only specialists understand, it has always been dealt with differently by the “insiders”, the Assyriologists who approached the texts where it manifests itself as philologists and historians of Mesopotamian culture, and by “outsiders”, historians of mathematics who had to rely on second-hand understanding of the material (actually, of as much of this material as they wanted to take into account), but who saw it as a constituent of the history of mathematics. The article deals with how these different approaches have looked in various periods: pre-decipherment speculations; the early period of deciphering, 1847–1929; the “golden decade”, 1929–1938, where workers with double competence (primarily Neugebauer and Thureau-Dangin ) attacked the corpus and demonstrated the Babylonians to have possessed unexpectedly sophisticated mathematical knowledge; and the ensuing four decades, where some mopping-up without change of perspective was all that was done by a handful of Assyriologists and Assyriologically competent historians of mathematics, while most Assyriologists lost interest completely, and historians of mathematics believed to possess the definitive truth about the topic in Neugebauer ’s popularizations.

Abstract:By lucky but adequate accident, “the Middle Ages” have become plural in English. The millennium that separates the defi nitive demise of the Western Roman Empire from the discovery of the New World and the Reformation can hardly be understood as one homogeneous period under any point of view – and certainly not if we look at mathematics education. The earliest phase, lasting until c. 750 CE, is known as “the Dark Ages” – both because surviving sources for this period are rare and because this rarity refl ects a very low intensity of literate culture. During the ensuing “Central Middle Ages” (c. 750–1050, the epoch of Charlemagne and the Ottonian emperors), attempts at statal centralization led not only to creation of the cathedral school system but also to corresponding developments of monastic learning. The High (c. 1050–1300) and Late (c. 1300–1500) Middle Ages are characterized by the rise of city culture, which led to the emergence of the university system as well as to the appearance of institutionalized lay education – connected to but not identical with the Renaissance current. In principle we should also distinguish between partially or fully separate types of education – that of the Latin school and university tradition and those of various kinds of practitioners. Among the latter, however, only the education of Late Medieval merchant youth is well documented in sources – for that of craftsmen we have very little evidence.

Abstract:This essay traces the history of three interconnected strands. Firstly, changes in the concept of number, secondly, the study of the qualities of number, which evolved into number theory, and thirdly, the nature of mathematics itself, from early Greek mathematics to the 20th century. These were embedded in philosophical shifts, from the classical Greek ontologies through increasing pragmatism to formalism and logical positivism. Given that Goedel demonstrated the limitations of the latter as a foundation for mathematics, this essay explores phenomenology and Lakatosian ideas, which together offer a more sound epistemological and ontological basis for mathematics and a methodology for mathematical <a class="link-external link-http" href="http://development.The" rel="external noopener nofollow">this http URL</a> question also then arises of the possible resurrection of earlier, neglected mathematical projects, including widening the domain of number theory to include integer qualities revealed in the growth of mathematics in general, which has predominantly been the growth of quantitative mathematics or logistike, the complement of arithmetike in classical Greece.

Abstract:We examine prevailing philosophical and historical views about the origin of infinitesimal mathematics in light of modern infinitesimal theories, and show the works of Fermat, Leibniz, Euler, Cauchy and other giants of infinitesimal mathematics in a new light. We also detail several procedures of the historical infinitesimal calculus that were only clarified and formalized with the advent of modern infinitesimals. These procedures include Fermat's adequality; Leibniz's law of continuity and the transcendental law of homogeneity; Euler's principle of cancellation and infinite integers with the associated infinite products; Cauchy's infinitesimal-based definition of continuity and "Dirac" delta function. Such procedures were interpreted and formalized in Robinson's framework in terms of concepts like microcontinuity (S-continuity), the standard part principle, the transfer principle, and hyperfinite products. We evaluate the critiques of historical and modern infinitesimals by their foes from Berkeley and Cantor to Bishop and Connes. We analyze the issue of the consistency, as distinct from the issue of the rigor, of historical infinitesimals, and contrast the methodologies of Leibniz and Nieuwentijt in this connection.

Abstract:Starting from the Italian unification in 1861, we describe the role of mathematics teaching in the Italian system of education giving an account of the main features of Italian mathematics education, and referring to the official syllabi, to the used textbooks, to the debates. We will see that interesting proposals in a period of about 150 years will always have to face a tendency to rigor as well as a resistance towards innovation.

Abstract:The paper starts by looking at how ‘practical’ and ‘theoretical’ mathematics and their relation have been understood from the Greeks to Christian Wolff and by historians of mathematics from Montucla to recent days. Drawing on earlier work of mine, and on the giants on whose shoulders I (try to) stand, I then suggest a categorization of the mathematical knowledge types a historian has to deal with: the ‘sub-scientific’ type, carried by practitioners taught in an apprenticeship network; the ‘scholasticized’ type, taught supposedly for practice but in a ‘scribal’ school by masters whose own genuine practice is that of teaching; and the ‘scientific’ or theory-oriented type. In the end, the utility of this categorization is tried out on two specific cases.

Abstract:Dewey (1938) suggested curriculum development should consider both the relationship between students' life experiences and interests and the material to be learned, and the relationship among educative experiences as unfolding in meaningful and useful ways. This study explored the influence of a mathematics education curriculum incorporating historical topics on students' meaning-making efforts as they developed both as students of mathematics and as preservice elementary mathematics teachers. The underlying question of this study was: How may a mathematics education curriculum, infused with evolving historical explorations over several semesters, help students make sense of their own mathematics and their future roles as mathematics teachers in elementary schools? The curriculum provided experiences with historical topics in mathematics, organized over three different semesters, in order to explore Dewey's notion that the unfolding of mathematical ideas may occur as historical origins and contexts offer meaningful mathematical connections. Results suggest that, despite the multiple opportunities throughout their teacher preparation program to expand their ideas about mathematical origins and connections, students maintained a predominantly technical interest in and perspective of mathematics learning. The resiliency of their beliefs was considered from the perspective of context of choice (Kymlicka, 1991, 1995), suggesting real-life experiences and historical connections with mathematical origins throughout a teacher preparation program may not sufficiently equip preservice teachers with necessary tools to overcome traditional perspectives of and past experiences with the mathematics curriculum.

Abstract:This chapter takes a historical view of the development of mathematics education, from its initial status as a business mostly managed by mathematicians to the birth of mathematics education as a scientific field of research. Starting from the acknowledgement that research in mathematics education demands more than the traditional focus on discussing curricular options at distinct grade levels, we identified several specialized clusters, debating specific issues related to mathematics education at an international level. We grouped the clusters into three main areas: relationships with psychology, the study of social, cultural and political dimensions, and the relevance of a theory for mathematics education.

Abstract:The purpose of this study was to analyze how the history of mathematics incorporated into Turkish middle school mathematics curriculum (5 th -8 th grades) and textbooks. The data were collected through document analysis from the Turkish middle school mathematics curriculum guide (5 th -8 th grades) and six Turkish middle school mathematics textbook series approved by the National Board of Education. According to the results gathered from the math curriculum, only one reference of the history of mathematics was found in the sixth-grade learning objectives and a few suggestions acknowledging the use of the history of mathematics in the learning and teaching process. No trace of the history of mathematics found in the content and assessment aspects of the curriculum. Further, the total number of the instances of the history of mathematics found in the six Turkish middle school mathematics textbooks for 5 th -8 th grade is only twenty-seven. Most of the references found in the math textbooks were placed in the introduction part of the topic. Based on the findings, it is obvious that the history of mathematics was used like a rarely-found appetizer both in the curriculum and the textbooks.

Abstract:We compare several approaches to the history of mathematics recently proposed by Blasjo, Fraser--Schroter, Fried, and others. We argue that tools from both mathematics and history are essential for a meaningful history of the discipline. In an extension of the Unguru-Weil controversy over the concept of geometric algebra, Michael Fried presents a case against both Andre Weil the "privileged observer" and Pierre de Fermat the "mathematical conqueror." We analyze Fried's version of Unguru's alleged polarity between a historian's and a mathematician's history. We identify some axioms of Friedian historiographic ideology, and propose a thought experiment to gauge its pertinence. Unguru and his disciples Corry, Fried, and Rowe have described Freudenthal, van der Waerden, and Weil as Platonists but provided no evidence; we provide evidence to the contrary. We analyze how the various historiographic approaches play themselves out in the study of the pioneers of mathematical analysis including Fermat, Leibniz, Euler, and Cauchy.

Abstract:We consider the mathematical theory of geographical maps, with an emphasis on the eighteenth century works of Euler, Lagrange and Delisle. This period is characterized by the frequent use of maps that are no more obtained by the stereographic projection or its variations, but by much more general maps from the sphere to the plane. More especially, the characteristics of the desired geographical maps were formulated in terms of an appropriate choice of the images of the parallels and meridians, and the mathematical properties required by the map concern the distortion of the maps restricted to these lines. The paper also contains some notes on the general use of mathematical methods in cartography in Greek Antiquity and in the modern period, and on the mutual influence of the two fields, mathematics and geography. The final version of this paper will appear in Ganita Bharati (Indian mathematics).

Abstract:At the beginning of the 20th century,among European sinologists there were two opposite attitudes towards the achievements of ancient Chinese mathematics.Some sinologists attributed the achievements of ancient Chinese mathematics to the influence of other civilizations,believing that Chinese mathematics was inferior to western mathematics,while the others thought positively of Chinese mathematics,believing that western and Chinese mathematics both have their own characteristics and uniqueness and should be treated equally.By examining the mathematical articles published in the authorized international sinological journal T'oung Pao by three representative sinologists,this article explores the controversies over ancient Chinese mathematics in the hope of shedding light on the study of the attitudes of sinologists towards ancient Chinese civilization.

Abstract:This chapter is an attempt to show how mathematical thought has changed in the last two centuries. In fact, with the discovery of the so-called non-Euclidean Geometries, mathematical thinking changed profoundly. With the negation of the postulate for “antonomasia,” that is the uniqueness of the parallel for Euclid, and the construction of a geometric theory equally valid on the logical and coherence plane, called non-Euclidean geometry, the meaning of the word “postulate” or “axiom” changes radically. The axioms of a theory do not necessarily have to be dictated by real evidence. On this basis the constructions of arithmetic and geometry are built. The axiomatic-deductive method becomes the mathematical method. It will also highlight the constant link between mathematics and the reality that surrounds us, which tends to make itself explicit through an artificial, abstract language and with clear and certain grammatical rules. Finally, you will notice the connection with the existing technology, that is the new electronic and digital technology.

Abstract:In this introductory chapter, the editors of the volume discuss the main directions of research on the history of counting instruments and computing devices and of their role in the transmission of mathematics knowledge from antiquity to the mid-twentieth century. They briefly present the issues discussed in the book, as well as in each contribution collected in the volume, and suggest that they can be organized according to the five following axes of research on the history of computing devices: (1) history of development of computational instruments per se and of the related computational practices; (2) transmission of expertise related to the counting skills and counting devices; (3) arithmetical operations performed with the instruments and their optimization; (4) mathematical writing and its interrelationship with computations; (5) role of the instruments in mathematics instruction and possible influence of the teaching practices on development of counting instruments.

Abstract:This paper treats a special Hungarian tradition of mathematics and its teaching, which emerged at the end of the 19th century. First, I briefly explain the circumstances of the formation of high quality Hungarian mathematics in the late 19th- early 20th century, touching on the socio-economic and cultural context as well as the educational reforms of the period. In a second part, I focus on a specific group of first-rate Hungarian mathematicians and mathematics educators of the mid-20th century; all of them participated in discussions of educational questions during the 1940s, and later influenced the important mathematics educational reform of the 1960s and 1970s led by Tamás Varga. In the third part I analyse some of their writings (books popularising mathematics, papers about mathematics education, correspondences), in order to attempt to characterise their conception of the nature of mathematics and its teaching. The historical and the textual analysis will also show that some well-known thinkers of Hungarian origin like G. Pólya and I. Lakatos are in close relation to the tradition represented by this Hungarian group.
