Abstract:In this paper, specific issues related to high-density perpendicular magnetic recording processes, such as transition noise properties and cross-track correlation lengths, were investigated with the help of micromagnetic analysis. The effects of media parameters were taken into consideration, including intergranular exchange coupling, and exchange distribution, irregular grain shapes, magnetization saturation distribution, and anisotropy distribution. The micromagnetic simulation results showed that the effect of anisotropy distribution on transition noise is more significant than magnetization saturation distribution, and it is crucial to reduce this effect to achieve a high signal-to-noise ratio. Additionally, a new method to further estimate the partial erasure threshold was proposed to approximate the partial erasure effects, and the relation between the microtrack jitter and total track jitter was investigated.

Abstract:This paper presents numerical simulation of high-density magnetic recording process with perpendicular head and media. The simulation is based on three-dimensional micromagnetic model of the media and an analytical model of the single pole perpendicular recording write field. The physical problem is modeled with a hybrid FEM-BEM formulation and the evaluation is accelerated using a new Fast Fourier Transform on Multipoles method. The model is suitable for studying magnetization transition configuration in perpendicular media with softmagnetic underlayer, and in turn can be used to derive microtrack model for evaluating the performance of recording systems.

Abstract:Thin-film recording media introduced commercially to rigid disk drives in the early 1980s revolutionized the rigid disk industry. By the end of the decade, particulate disk technology accounted for less than half of the worldwide shipped disks and is expected to disappear from rigid disk drives altogether in the 1990s. The implementation of thin-film technology required entirely new disk fabrication processes and new insights into magnetic materials and microstructures. A review of the fundamental magnetic reasons for implementing thin-film technology will be given, followed by a discussion of the physics and magnetics of thin films. The technology is not completely understood and needs to be examined because of the continued increase of recording densities in rigid disk drives. Discussion will concentrate on thin films suitable for horizontal recording. Topics to be considered are those deemed important from a disk product development view and include thin-film media noise, anisotropy, and magnetic alloys and microstructures.

Abstract:The core of the current granular perpendicular magnetic recording (PMR) media is the granular oxide magnetic layer (GOML). We observe that a fcc NiW seed layer, followed by a hcp Ru layer sputtered under low pressure (LP-Ru) and then by a hcp Ru layer sputtered under high pressure (HP-Ru) provides an excellent structural template for the granular oxide magnetic layer (GOML). Microstructure and magnetic properties of the GOML can be tailored through process conditions and alloy compositions to maximize the recording performance of the perpendicular magnetic recording media. Exchange coupled composite (ECC) media design provides significant improvement in overwrite (OW) and signal-to-noise ratio (S0NR) for perpendicular magnetic recording media. Recording performance of the ECC media needs to be optimized with consideration of the magnetic properties and thicknesses of both the exchange control layer (ECL) and the cap magnetic layer (CML). At their respective optimum, the recording performance of the ECC media is mostly dependent upon the properties of the GOML and CML. This study indicates that a dual magnetic cap layer structure consisting of low-M-s and high-M-s sublayers can combine the benefits provided by the two types of cap magnetic materials.

Abstract:The crystallographic and magnetic properties of electrolessly plated cobalt alloy films were investigated for the purpose of developing perpendicular magnetic recording media. The optimum concentration of MnSO4 in the plating bath was determined. TEM, SEM, XRD and XPS techniques were used for microstructural investigations. The phosphorus segregation in the grain boundary is the main cause of the formation of the columnar structure. The effects of the film thickness on the magnetic properties are discussed.

Abstract:In this paper, we present a combined experimental and micromagnetic simulation study of the recording, noise and position error signal characteristics in patterned thin film media. The medium is patterned with a focused ion beam etching technique on typical present thin film disks. It is found the transition noise is completely absent in the patterned thin film media. Comparing with continuous thin film media, the medium noise is reduced to the level of noise at saturation remnant state and is no longer density-dependent. With the elimination of transition noise, the signal-to-medium-noise ratio will be sufficient at very narrow track widths without further reduction of grain size. A slight increase of intergranular exchange coupling will have little impact on medium noise, but enhance thermal magnetic stability of the medium. Down track orientation of the crystalline easy axes will further improve the recording performances. Position error signal patterns in patterned media can be more versatile and significantly more effective and efficient.

Abstract:The effect of grain size dispersion on medium noise in longitudinal thin film recording media is studied by micromagnetic modeling. A previous micromagnetic model has been extended for modeling films with grain size variation. It is found that for the typical thin film media, moderate grain size dispersion in the film does not affect the media noise at low recording densities. At high recording densities, when adjacent transition boundaries percolate, the film with grain size dispersion exhibits a less degree of superlinear noise enhancement than the film with identical size grains. It is concluded that for films with medium noise dominated by magnetic interactions, moderate grain size dispersion slightly suppresses the collective magnetization processes at high recording densities, thereby, reducing medium noise.

Abstract:As track density increases, it has become even more critical to understand the track edge. In this study, the impact of media design on the track edges in perpendicular magnetic recording has been investigated. This study shows that soft under layer thickness and intergranular exchange coupling have significant impact on both track edge erasure and write width. In the range we studied, head-to-keeper spacing and media coercivity have a strong impact on write width, but not on track edge erasure. On the other hand, media design does not impact transition curvature significantly. Experimental observations were supported by media micromagnetic modeling results and write field simulation using a finite element model. Analyzing the write bubble helps to understand the dependence of adjacent track encroachment on media design. Cross track profiles of various signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) components can provide valuable insights into different track edge mechanisms.

Abstract:The recording density limit of shingled magnetic recording (SMR) and ion-irradiated bit patterned media (BPM) are studied for the perpendicular continuous thin film media and exchange-coupled composite (ECC) media. Under the comprehensive consideration of writability and thermal stability, the source of the noise is investigated, and the signal to noise ratio (SNR) is analyzed versus the recording density. In SMR with density of 0.6-1.2Tb/in2, under the same thermal stability, ECC media shows 1-3dB increase in SNR than the conventional continuous media. The noise of BPM recording is compressed in the ion irradiated region between bits and influences SNR greatly.

Abstract:This paper presents a dynamic magnetic field prediction for perpendicular writer heads in magnetic recording systems. The dynamic model considered the effect of time dependence and velocity of soft underlayer when compared with a static model. The effects of the spin speed of the disk platters, and rise time of the recording signals are investigated. The results showed that the write field performance is more sensitive to the spin speed than the rise time. The write field distribution in the soft underlayer is also studied with effect of various design parameters taken into consideration.

Abstract:The skew angle, which is the angle between the cross-track direction and the parallel-gap direction in the head, varies for about 30" among recording tracks due to the utilization of the rotary actuator in the disk drive [I]. In this paper, the recording performance in two types of media, an isotropic medium and an oriented medium, will be analyzed at different densities in the presence of skew angles by the micromagnetic model. The recording in thin film disk media had been studied by a micromagnetic simulation model before [2]. The authors have redeveloped and improved the micromagnetic model in several aspects. First, another simulation model which calculates the head field of the thin film record head was developed and combined with the medium micromagnetic model [3]. Second, the anisotropy amplitude distribution has been included. Third, the skew angle can take any value. The magnetization of each particle in the medium is calculated by solving the Landau-LiftshitzGilbert equation.

Abstract:Recording performance is analysed by a micromagnetic model in two thin film media with different distribution width of the anisotropy field magnitude, With the same M-r delta, the magnetic properties of the two media are almost the same except that the switching slope S* is larger for the medium with narrower distribution, The signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) is calculated for both media versus recording densities, The SNR at recording densities 4800-9000 flux reversals per millimeter is 5-8 dB smaller in the medium with a broad anisotropy magnitude distribution than the SNR in the medium with a sharp distribution.

Abstract:A three-dimensional micromagnetic model is built up to analyze the relationship between the magnetic property and the microstructure of FePt thin films, with careful discussions of the tetragonal symmetry and the magnetostriction. It is found that the in-plane magnetoelastic effect with a residual tensile stress on the order of 1 Gpa would enlarge the perpendicular coercivity and the saturation field of the longitudinal loop; the tetragonal anisotropy, such as tetragonal anisotropy with 5:1 in-plane/out-of-plane anisotropy ratio, tends to enlarge the longitudinal coercivity and conduce the open up between the tails of the longitudinal and perpendicular loops. The high perpendicular squareness is caused by the perfect orientation of the c axis and large exchange interactions. The simulated M-H loops agree well with experiments. Abstract:Magnetization dynamics during field reversal in thin film recording heads are studied via micromagnetic modeling. It is found that head field reversal under the current field can be characterized by two stages: an initial stage that is mainly governed by the gyromagnetic motion and virtually independent of energy damping, followed by a damping stage that strongly depends on the energy damping constant. Due to the finite energy damping in practical recording heads, the head field amplitude will roll off at high recording frequencies. Simply decreasing the current rise time or increasing current amplitude will not alleviate the situation, but rather worsen it. There exists an optimum current rise time at which the head field rise time is minimized and the roll-off frequency is maximized.

Abstract:The effect of film thickness on the colossal magnetoresistance in Pr0.7Sr0.3MnO3 films has been studied. The resistivity peak temperature shifts systematically with decreasing film thickness. A remarkable improvement of the magnetoresistance sensitivity at low field has been obtained in a 20 nm film. These effects can be understood by considering the oxygen deficiency caused by the stress at the substrate/film interface and increase of the electron delocalization in the thinner films. A way to increase the low field sensitivity at room temperature is discussed.

Abstract:The mechanism of columnar crystallite orientation in electroless Co-Ni-Mn-P films for perpendicular magnetic recording media was investigated using SEM, TEM and other methods. Micro-region analysis revealed that the Ni and P in the film is mainly distributed in the grain boundary. So it is suggested that the film has a segregated microstructure. The segregation of Ni-P alloy is the main cause which makes the c axis of alpha-Co orient along the film normal and the columnar grain become fine. Magnetic measurements also showed that the films had a good perpendicular property.

Abstract:It is well known that recording media noise is strongly dependent on intergranular exchange coupling. ΔM is an important parameter for the characterization of intergranular magnetic interaction in magnetic recording thin films. First, this paper introduced the theoretic background and significance of ΔM. Secondly a measuring method for ΔM, in which ΔM curves were obtained through IRM and DCD curves measured by using VSM and simple computation, and furtherly, the issues on some factors affecting ΔM measurement were discussed. Thirdly, we measured the ΔM curves of two types of amorphous TbFeCo thin films and analyze qualitatively the intensity and the type of intergranular magnetic interaction.
