Abstract:Self-organized nanostripe patterns with a wavelength of 100 nm and an amplitude of 4 - 5 nm were formed on the surface of high-purity aluminium by electropolishing. The thermal stability of the nanostripe patterns was investigated experimentally by using a needle-sensor atomic force microscope in an ultra-high vacuum after annealing the sample in a high vacuum. We found that the originally highly ordered nanostripe structures transformed into many domains separated by various boundaries, and different nanostripe patterns formed, the belt-like boundaries especially formed "cross" patterns on the surface. We also found that the vacuum annealing had the tendency to efface the nanostripe structures.

Abstract:Quasi-ordered, stripe-like, nanometer-scale structures were spontaneously created on surfaces of high-purity(99. 999%) aluminum by electropolishing. Observed under atomic force microscopy (AFM), the average width of single stripe and the distance between two neighboring stripes are about 40 similar to 50 run, respectively, and the average height of the stripes is 1.5 - 5.0 nm. The highly ordered stripe-like nanostructures can be obtained only within a narrow range of processing parameters. The stripe deficiencies, such as stripe-cross and stripe-convergence, within parallel stripes, can be seen on surface defects, which do not fundamentally affect the orientation of the stripes. The stripe structures are stable in atmosphere at room temperature. When samples with stripe structures were anodized to form porous alumina, the stripe structures vanished. A physical scenario was proposed to explain the growth mechanisms of the quasi-ordered stripe-like structures.
Patterning Polycrystalline Aluminum by Electropolishing at Low Voltages

Abstract:Highly ordered stripes with controllable spacing of the pattern lines are obtained during electropolishing aluminum (Al) foils at low voltage. The samples are investigated in detail with the Atomic Force Microscope (AFM). Stripes with similar spacing of the pattern lines are observed on the surface of Al sheets which are electropolished in the same electrolyte at various voltages. However, the spacing of the pattern lines is closer when there is more ethanol in the electrolyte at the same voltage. The formation mechanism of stripes with dissimilar spacing of the pattern lines in different electrolyte is discussed. We suggest that the spacing of the pattern lines depends on the concentration of the polar molecules (ethanol) in the electrolyte.

Abstract:Nanometer-scale alumina template with highly ordered and closely packed hexagonal pore structure was prepared by one and two-step electrochemical anodizing process in oxalic acid solution respectively. The micrographs of the electrochemical polished aluminum samples under different polishing conditions were observed with atomic force microscope (AFM) and the optimum electrochemical polishing conditions were obtained, i.e., the aluminum sample was electropolished in a mixed solution of perchloric acid (18%) and ethanol with 1 : 4 in volume under constant voltage 55 V at 10 °C for 30 s.

Abstract:The surface morphology of the anodic aluminum oxide (AAO) prepared with different surface coating has been studied by AFM and SEM. Under optimized condition, highly ordered stripe patterns have been obtained. These regular patterns, including random stripes and regular stripes, show strong dependence on the crystal orientation of the aluminum substrate. This method can be developed into a novel nanoscale fabrication technique.

Abstract:Electropolishing of aluminum (Al) has been applied to form surface nanopatterns of various morphologies and sizes. However, the effect of crystallographic orientation on nanopattern morphology and size in electropolished Al is unclear. Here, annealed polycrystalline and monocrystalline Al samples were electropolished at 40 V in an electrolyte of perchloric acid, ethanol, butyl cellusolve and water, the correlation between crystallographic orientation and nanopattern morphology and size was firmly established through systematic EBSD and SEM examination. Heterogeneity in nanopattern morphology and nanopattern size is induced by crystallographic anisotropy of grains. Nanopattern morphology and size change gradually for grains and planes oriented with varying misorientation angles against each primary direction [101]//ND, [101]//ND and [111]//ND. The transitions between nanopattern morphologies also occur for grain surface planes with near identical misorientation angles. The surface structure sensitivity of nanopattern morphology and size was firmly established and then qualitatively explained by invoking step-terrace and step-ledge surface structure models and by developing a refined adsorption-diffusion perspective based on a reported theoretical model. The findings reported here contribute significantly to gaining new insights into the crystallographic orientation dependence of nanopattern morphology and nanopattern size in electropolished Al and other metals.

Abstract:Anodic aluminum oxide (AAO) or anodic alumina template containing hexagonally ordered nanopores has been widely used over the last decade for the development of numerous functional nanostructures such as nanoscale sensors, computing networks and memories. The long range pore order requires the starting aluminum surface to be extremely smooth. Electropolishing is the most commonly used method for surface planarization prior to anodization. While prevalent, this method has several limitations in terms of throughput, polishing area and requirement of special experimental setups, which introduce additional speed bottlenecks in the intrinsically slow AAO-based nanofabrication process. In this work we report a new generation of the so-called "chemical polishing" approach which circumvents these stumbling blocks in the pretreatment phase and offers a viable, simpler, safer and faster alternative to electropolishing. These benefits are obtained without sacrificing the quality of the final AAO template. In this work we have (a) identified the optimum parameter regime for chemical polishing and (b) determined process conditions for which a novel parallel nanoridge configuration self-assembles and extends over a distance of several microns. Such patterns can be used as a mask for fabricating nanocrossbars, which are the main structural components in myriad nanoscale memories and crosspoint architectures.

Abstract:The effects of electropolishing on the sub-micrometre structure pattern on the surface of polycrystalline aluminium were investigated. Under constant current, the electropolishing process results in large-area uniform sub-micrometre dot arrays despite the polycrystalline aluminium surface. Effects of temperature on the pattern of the surface structures were also investigated. Experimental temperature was shown to have a great influence on the structure pattern. When the electropolishing temperature increases, the structure of aluminium surface tends to transform from a dot pattern to stripe one and then to a corrosion structure.

Abstract:7075 aluminum (Al) alloy has been widely used in aircraft structures and other high-end electronic products owing to its excellent mechanical and chemical properties, while its damage-free and highly efficient surface finishing remains a challenge. Herein, we demonstrate a systematic study of the anodic behaviors of 7075 Al alloy during the electrochemical polishing (ECP) process in phosphoric acid under different applied potentials, and the changes of surface morphology, roughness, electric current, and resistance are studied intensively. According to the surface morphology and current density, the ECP of 7075 Al alloy can be divided into 4 stages including the negative leveling stage, leveling and corrosion stage, leveling and brightening stage, and pitting and corrosion stage. Different factors influencing each stage and the effects of impurity phases in the ECP process are experimentally validated. Under optimized conditions, a mirror surface with a roughness (Ra) of 46.7 nm (decreased from an initial value of 153.2 nm) can be obtained by ECP for 10 min. The presented findings are of great value for the further development of ECP process of multiphase alloys.

Abstract:Aluminum alloy surface can be etched easily in acid environment, but the microstructure of alloy surface hardly meets the customers' demand. In this work, a facile acidic-assistant surface oxidation technique has been employed to form reproducible super-hydrophobic surfaces on aluminum alloy plates. The samples immersed in three different acid solutions at ambient temperatures are studied and the results demonstrated that the aqueous mixture solution of oxalic acid and hydrochloric is easier to produce better faces and better stability. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), Raman spectrometer, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and water contact angle measurement are used to investigate the morphologies, microstructures, chemical compositions and hydrophobicity of the produced films on aluminum substrates. The surfaces, configured of a labyrinth structure with convexity and concavity, are in different roughness and gloss because of the different recipe acid solutions used. Better roughness of the surface can be obtained by adjusting the concentration of Cl-and oxalate ions in acid solutions. The present research work provides a new strategy for the controllable preparation super-hydrophobic films of general materials on aluminum alloy for practical industrial applications. Abstract:Superhydrophobic surfaces on metal substrates are often prepared via roughing the surfaces and lowering their surface energy. The superhydrophobic aluminum surface with a water contact angle of 162.5° and rolling angle less than 6° was fabricated via electrochemical etching and re-deposition using the alkalic Na3PO4 electrolyte and then fluorination treating. The surface morphology and chemical composition were characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS). The results show that the surface consists of the micrometer-scale lumps and protrusions, and many nanometer-scale mastoids are filled in these protrusions. These hierarchical micro/nanometer-scale binary structures, which are similar to the micro-structures of lotus leaf surfaces, play an important role in achieving superhydrophobicity. The main components of the binary geometric structures are Al2O3, AlPO4, and H2O. The effects of the processing time and processing voltage on the macro-morphology were also investigated. The macro-rough structures appeared on the edge of the aluminum surface firstly, and then spread gradually to the entire surface. © (2012) Trans Tech Publications, Switzerland.
Nanosized controlled surface pretreatment of biometallic alloy 316L stainless steel

Abstract:Stainless steel (AISI 316L) is a medical grade stainless steel alloy used extensively in medical devices and in the biomedical field. 316L stainless steel was successfully electropolished via an ecologically friendly and biocompatible ionic liquid (IL) medium based on Vitamin B4 (NB4) and resulting in nanosized surface roughness and topography. Voltammetry and chronoamperometry tests determined optimum polishing conditions for the stainless steel alloy while atomic force microscopy (AFM) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) provided surface morphology comparisons to benchmark success of each electropolishing condition. Energy dispersive X-ray analysis (EDX) combined with SEM revealed significantly smoother surfaces for each alloy surface while indicating that the constituent metals comprising each alloy effectively electropolished at uniform rates.

Abstract:A new and facile method for improving the procedure of anodic aluminum oxide (AAO) film preparation was presented, which was based on an electrochemical detachment procedure. The detachment and pore-opening were performed just through one step in a solution of HClO4and C2H5OH at a voltage of 40V. The as-obtained AAO film was characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and scanning probing microscopy (SPM). The process of detachment and pore-opening was also discussed.

Abstract:In this study, we prepared a micro-nano hierarchical structure superhydrophobic 7055 aluminum alloy surface. The preparation mechanism, the surface topographies, the wettability, and the chemical compositions were characterized and discussed in detail. Results show that electrolytic polishing (EP) and etching can effectively inhibit the continuous growth of corrosion products and take grains as a unit, which has micron petal-shaped structures with the grain boundary as the boundary. The surface has a great lasting quality and the corrosive ions and liquids can hardly infiltrate the aluminum substrate and avoid the generation of chloride ion channels.

Abstract:Hierarchical functional materials with various micro/nanostructures have attracted widespread attention because of their particular physical and chemical characteristics. Finding appropriate methods for the preparation of hierarchical functional materials has thus become a hot topic for research. In the present work, micro/nanoporous templates with a novel hierarchical structure have been fabricated by anodization of a patterned aluminum surface. Firstly, a layer of nail gel (CA600) is applied to the surface of an electropolished aluminum sheet by spin coating. After drying, interconnected microscale cracks are formed on the surface of the aluminum sheets, forming a patterned aluminum surface. Secondly, the aluminum sheets are anodized in 0.3 M oxalic acid electrolyte at 30−50 V (15 oC) to form micro/nanoporous templates with a novel hierarchical structure. The effect of spinning rate, spinning time, and anodization voltage on the microstructure of the porous templates has been studied in detail. The porous templates can be used to prepare various hierarchical functional materials.

Abstract:Electropolishing has found wide application as the final surface treatment of metal products in mechanical engineering and instrumentation, medicine and reflective concentrators for PV cells. It was found that electropolishing (EP) not only reduces the surface roughness and changes its appearance, but improves many operational characteristics as well, such as corrosion resistance, endurance, tensile strength, and many others, and also changes the physicochemical properties, for example, reflectivity, electromagnetic permeability and electronic emission of some ferro-magnetic metals. This fact greatly expands the possibility of using this method in various fields of science and technology. This work is part of a study, examining electro polishing for reducing the crystalline defects adjacent to the surface, thus improving its physical properties, contributing to higher optical efficiency, when used in PV generation and storage devices. Five compositions were examined using different temperature and current density parameters. The polished samples were evaluated using reflectance spectrometry. The solution which was composed of Phosphoric acid - 85%, Acetic acid - 10%, Nitric acid - 5% was found to provide the best results. Another result obtained was that reflectance increased as the current density increased up to 25 A/dm2. Further increasing the current density resulted in deterioration of the surface and reduced reflectance. It was shown that careful lapping and polishing followed by electropolishing using the suggested solution may consist of an adequate treatment for preparing reflective concentrators for PV cells.

Abstract:Aluminum nanodimple arrays (AlNDAs) formed by anodic oxidation technique have tremendous potential in synthesis of various nanostructures. Here, highly ordered AlNDAs with continuously tunable period were fabricated by one-step hard anodization (HA) aluminum in a mono-concentration sulfuric/oxalic acid mixed electrolyte (0.3 M/0.3 M). We found that ordered AlNDAs were obtained at anodization voltage range of 30 to 50 V. By controlling anodization voltage and total charge density, the AlNDAs with period of 60-89 nm were obtained. The results provide an effective approach for precisely regulating the period of smaller period AlNDAs. (C) 2020 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Abstract:A simple method of acid etching and surface passivation was developed for fabricating the super-hydrophobic surface on polycrystalline aluminum alloy. After the chemical etched surface was fabricated with the stearic-acid, the aluminum alloy surface exhibits a super-hydrophobic property with water contact angle of 151°and contact angle hysteresis of 8°. The surface morphology was inspected with scanning electron microscope, and it was found that the surface is configured in a labyrinthic porous structure with plateaus and caves of micro-nanostructure. The air cushion was formed in the caves between the surfaces. This micro-nano hierarchical structure plays an important role in the formation of the super-hydrophobicity. The super-hydrophobic phenomenon of the prepared surface was analyzed with Cassie theory, and the result shows that only about 16% of the water contact surface are contacted with the metal substrate and the rest 84% is contacted with the air cushion. The experimental results showed that aluminum of super-hydrophobic surface can be prepared by this simple method, the optimum process conditions found are after grinding, ethanol soaking,acetic acid soaking sixty hours, immersing in the 0.1mol/L potassium permanganate three hours after soaking and finally immersion in 1% stearic-acid for 30minutes.
