Abstract:In the polyhedron space frame structure for the National Swimming Center, penetrated butt welds are adopted to connect the member to the joint. In order to avoid the brittle weld fracture prior to the steel tube fracture, it is necessary to strengthen the butt welded connections, so that the strong-joint and weak-member design philosophy can be realized and the structure has a good ductility. For moment connections of square steel tubes, based on the unreinforced connection using penetrated butt welds, two types of strengthening strategies are proposed: cover-plated reinforcement and local-thicker-tube reinforcement. Low-cycle reverse loading tests were carried out on these three types of connections. Comparisons on hysteretic behavior and ductility coefficients show that, both the cover-plated and the local-thicker-tube reinforcements can relocate the plastic hinge away from the weld where the maximum bending moment occurs and consequently improve the ductility of the connection effectively, and the former one is much better. Furthermore, low-cycle tests were carried out on tube connections fabricated by steel with a small ultimate-to-yield strength ratio, indicating that the cover-plated reinforcement improves the ductility of the connection successfully as well.
