Abstract:We describe here a simple and low-cost method to prepare ultra-thin, homogeneous, and transferable films of pristine carbon nanotubes (CNTs). The highly efficient chemical vapor deposition (CVD) growth method involves silica supported catalysts and alcohol vapor as gaseous carbon source. By varying the amount of catalysts, the thickness of synthesized films can be easily tuned from 20 nm (sub-monolayer) to 150 nm in a controlled fashion. High-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM) revealed that the films are composed primarily of single-walled and a small fraction of double-walled CNTs. A nonlinear relationship between film conductivity and thickness was observed. Our sub-monolayer (similar to 20 nm) film, which is noticeably thinner than conductive CNT films synthesized using other methods (typically > 50 nm and up to similar to 100 mu m), shows the highest conductivity of 400 mho . cm(-1) with similar to 90% transparency in the visible range and close to 100% transparency in the infrared range. This ultra-thin film can also be transferred carrier-film free to a wide range of substrates including low-cost plastics for flexible electronics. Compared to CNT films prepared by filtration techniques, our films demonstrated superior stability against mechanical bending.

Abstract:SWNT thin films with different nanotube densities are fabricated by CVD while controlling the concentration of catalyst and growth time. Three layers of SWNT films are transferred to flexible substrates serving as electrodes and channel materials, respectively. All-carbon nanotube TFTs with an on/off ratio as high as 10(5) are obtained. Inverters are fabricated on top of the flexible substrates with symmetric input/output behavior.

Abstract:This paper presents a cost-effective method to transfer vertically aligned carbon nanotubes (VA-CNTs) with Poly(dimethylsiloxane) (PDMS). Here, in this process, we take the advantage of PDMS solution as the transfer medium, meanwhile utilize the good wetting of this solution on another cured PDMS film to realize efficient transfer. The SEM images of transferred CNTs were taken to characterize the surface properties and verify the quality of fabrication. It shows high quality VA-CNT film with notable stretchability and flexibility was obtained by this simple method. The well aligned PDMS films with proper as-grown CNTs have a broad potential to be utilized in numbers of novel nanodevices, such as gas sensor, supercapacitor and nanogenerator, etc.

Abstract:Utilizing carbon nanotubes (CNTs) as substitutes for the conventional rigid indium-tin oxide (ITO) electrodes, all CNT based flexible field emission devices (FEDs) were possible to prepare with a novel film transfer method. In the method, both CNT-based flexible cathode and anode were fabricated by first attaching the vacuum filtered CNT film/mixed cellulose eater (MCE) filter membrane to an adhesive semi-cured poly(dimethyl siloxane) substrate, and then peeling off the MCE filter membrane. Effects of bending direction and bending radius on field emission properties were studied. The field emission performance of the convex bending device was worse than that of the flat device and deteriorated further with the decrease of bending radius. In contrast, the concave bending device exhibited better field emission properties than the flat device; nevertheless, its field emission properties decreased as the concave bending radius reduced below a certain value. The method achieved two successes. One is that the interfacial interaction between CNT films and the flexible substrate was greatly enhanced. The other is that the transfer process improved the field emission properties due to the increase of vertically aligned CNT tips. Compared with traditional methods applied in FED preparation, the novel modified transfer method is organic free, easy to control, cheap, and environment friendly.

Abstract:The one-dimensional character of electrons, phonons and excitons in individual single-walled carbon nanotubes leads to extremely anisotropic electronic, thermal and optical properties. However, despite significant efforts to develop ways to produce large-scale architectures of aligned nanotubes, macroscopic manifestations of such properties remain limited. Here, we show that large (>cm2) monodomain films of aligned single-walled carbon nanotubes can be prepared using slow vacuum filtration. The produced films are globally aligned within ±1.5° (a nematic order parameter of ∼1) and are highly packed, containing 1 × 106 nanotubes in a cross-sectional area of 1 μm2. The method works for nanotubes synthesized by various methods, and film thickness is controllable from a few nanometres to ∼100 nm. We use the approach to create ideal polarizers in the terahertz frequency range and, by combining the method with recently developed sorting techniques, highly aligned and chirality-enriched nanotube thin-film devices. Semiconductor-enriched devices exhibit polarized light emission and polarization-dependent photocurrent, as well as anisotropic conductivities and transistor action with high on/off ratios. Large films of aligned and closely packed single-walled carbon nanotubes can be prepared through slow vacuum filtration, and used to create terahertz polarizers, thin-film transistors, polarized light emission devices, and polarization-sensitive detectors.

Abstract:An atmospheric‐pressure plasma system is developed and is used to treat carbon nanotube assemblies, producing a hybrid carbon‐zinc structure. This system is integrated into a floating‐catalyst chemical vapor deposition furnace used for the synthesis of macroscopic assemblies of carbon nanotubes to allow for the in‐line, continuous, and single‐step production of nano‐composite materials. Material is deposited from a sacrificial zinc wire in the form of nanoparticles and can coat the surface of the individual carbon nanotubes as they form. Additionally, it is found that the deposited materials penetrate further into the carbon nanotube matrix than a comparable post‐synthesis deposition, improving the uniformity of the material through the thickness. Thus, a single‐step metal‐based coating and carbon nanotube synthesis process which can form the basis of production scale manufacturing of metal‐carbon nanotube composite materials with an atmospheric‐pressure plasma system are demonstrated.

Abstract:Aligned array of single-walled carbon nanotubes on a substrate is synthesized by chemical vapour deposition of methane. The combined synthesis and FIB technique presented here demonstrated the nanotube devices with metallic electrodes. Sample characterization was carried out with SEM pictures and I-V curves, which show that the nanotube with metallic electrodes may be widely used in both basic research and applications.

Abstract:Complex fabrication methods for carbon nanotubes limit their potential for scale-up and use in practical applications. This study developed a simple method to deposit multiwall carbon nanotube (MWCNT) forest-like films from polyacrylonitrile and MWCNT solutions by coaxial electrospray. A MWCNT solution was used as the shell flow to generate vertically aligned tree-like structures at mesoscopic scale (similar to 10(-5) m) on aluminum, silicon, and fiber membrane substrates. These forest-like structures assembled from highly conductive core-shell polymer/MWCNT particles with diameter of about 1 mu m. The fabricated MWCNT films show good potential for applications in flexible electronics and as conductive filters. (c) 2016 Published by Elsevier Ltd.

Abstract:Fe-filled carbon nanotubes were considered as excellent microwave adsorption materials [1], biomedicine materials [2] and high density magnetic recoding media [3]. The films produced in previous reports mainly range from a few nanometers to several microns. Here, a new method is reported for one-step synthesizing macroscopic Fe-filled CNTs film with a relatively high area. The experiment was carried out in a quartz tubular furnace by catalytic decomposing of ferrocene/dichlorobenzene. The method used is similar to that reported in Ref. [4], however some improvements were made. In the experiments additional substrates were not needed for Fe-filled CNTs growth. The Fe-filled CNTs directly grow on the interior wall of the quartz tube. The procedure is described as follows: the ferrocene was dissolved in dichlorobenzene to form a solution of 0.06 g/ml, which was then pumped continuously into a two-zone tubular quartz reactor by a flux pump at a feeding rate of 0.13 ml/min. The flowing rates of Ar/H2 during the reaction were kept at 2000/ 300 ml/min. The temperatures at preheating zone and decomposition zone were maintained at 250 and 860 , respectively. Finally, the furnace was cooled down to ambient temperature in an Ar flow. The films were easily peeled off from the interior wall of the quartz tube. Fig. 1(a) is a TEM image of Fe-filled CNTs film. The diameter of CNTs is homogeneous and foreign impurities or particles were seldom. The area of the film is about 100 cm. Most CNTs are filled with continuous and straight Fe nanowires. The Fe nanowires are about 1~3 m in length and 20~30 nm in diameter. The diameter of CNTs varies from 20 to 40 nm. XRD results show that the filled Fe nanowires are -Fe and -Fe. Annealing process was used to transformed the -Fe into -Fe. The Fe-filled CNTs films were annealed at 650 for 15 h in Ar atmosphere. As show in Fig. 1(b), almost all of filled Fe nanowires were -Fe after annealing.

Abstract:Recently, flexible transparent conductive films composed of metal nanowires have received significant interest, particularly for flexible electronics. However, the high contact resistance among metal nanowires and the weak bonding effect between metal nanowires and substrates often result in films whose conductivity, adhesion, and flexibility fall short of the stringent requirements demanded by real-world uses. We developed a simple method to fabricate high-performance flexible transparent conductive films via successively spin-coating silver nanowires (AgNWs) and acidic silica sol onto the surface of the substrate. Under the capillary force of ethanol and the etching effect of hydrochloric acid, the adjacent AgNWs are induced to chemically weld in situ to form a stable network. The resulting composite film exhibits a sheet resistance of only 8.5 Ω/sq, marking an impressive 80% decrease compared with the pristine AgNW film. Meanwhile, the silica sol acts as a filler, improving light transmittance while further reinforcing the network structure and firmly bonding it to the substrate. Thus, the delamination of the nanowires under bending motion is effectively inhibited, and the resulting film was endowed with resistance remaining below 15 Ω/sq after 3000 bending and 200 tape peeling. The energy-efficient in situ chemical welding and reinforcement method for nanowires provides an innovative strategy for the batch preparation of flexible transparent conductive films.

Abstract:In this paper, a serial of treatment methods of as-prepared carbon nanotubes (CNTs) are described including filtration, oxidation and decentralization. After treatment, steady CNT suspension is obtained, and little impurity is observed in the treated CNTs. Also, a liquid-phase fabrication method of CNT film based on electrophoresis deposition is presented, and patterned CNT films have been fabricated on patterned electrodes. Further, mechanism analyses have been carried out about both the pre-treatment and the electrophoresis deposition.

Abstract:Summary form only given. We present a simple technology for the fabrication of CNTs films cathode by utilizing method of rubbing CNT powders onto the polished substrates. The metallic substrates were polished by 10000 mesh white fused alumina powder at first. Then, the CNTs were rubbed on them. After that process, the metallic substrates were covered by CNTs films uniformly and firmly, as characterized by scanning electron microscope and scotch tape peeling tests. The field-electron-emission properties of such films cathodes were investigate under the vacuum of 10-5 Pa. The experimental results showed that the field-emission image of the films was nearly uniform and the emission current was considerably large. The turn-on field (the field at an emission current density of 10μA/cm ) was 3.4V/μm. The emission current density of 1.31mA/cm was obtained at the electric field of 6.1 V/μm, and emission current was almost stable in more than 60 minutes under about ImA/cm .

Abstract:Multi-wall carbon nanotube (MWCNT) films were prepared on the stainless steel plate using electrophoresis deposition and sintering techniques in this paper. The MWCNT film adsorbed strongly onto the substrate after the sintering process in the furnace. The MWCNT film exhibits excellent field emission properties with high emission current densities, low threshold electric fields and good field mission stability.

Abstract:Hybridization of carbon nanotubes (CNT) with graphene provides a promising means of integrating the attributes of both materials, thereby enabling widespread application. Here, we present a method to directly assemble hybrid CNT-graphene films by a blown bubble method combined with selective substrate annealing. We use polymethylmethacrylate (PMMA) as the polymeric matrix to blow bubbles containing self-assembled multi-walled CNT arrays, and then transform the bubble film into a CNT-graphene hybrid film by thermal annealing on a Cu substrate; PMMA serves as the carbon source for growing single to few-layer graphene among the CNT network until a continuously hybridized structure is formed. Compared to the bare (non-hybridized) CNT networks, the hybrid films exhibit improved electrical conductivity and structural integrity. Our method also enables the fabrication of a multi-walled CNT-Si solar cell, which has high power conversion efficiency, through the assembly of hybrid CNT-graphene structures.

Abstract:<p>Single‐walled carbon nanotube (SWCNT) films are promising materials as flexible transparent conductive films (TCFs). Here, inspired by the extrusion blown plastic film technique and the SWCNT synthesis approach by floating catalyst chemical vapor deposition (FCCVD), a novel blown aerosol chemical vapor deposition (BACVD) method is reported to directly and continuously produce freestanding SWCNT TCFs at several hundred meters per hour. The synthesis mechanism, involving blowing a stable aerosol bubble and transforming the bubble into an aerogel, is investigated, and a general phase diagram is established for this method. For the SWCNT TCFs via BACVD, both carbon conversion efficiency and SWCNT TCF yield can reach three orders of magnitude higher than those with the conventional FCCVD. The film displays a sheet resistance of 40 ohm sq<sup>−1</sup> at 90% transmittance after being doped, representing the record performance based on large‐scale SWCNT films. Transparent, flexible, and stretchable electrodes based on BACVD films are demonstrated. Moreover, this high‐throughput method of producing SWCNT TCFs can be compatible with the roll‐to‐roll process for mass production of flexible displays, touch screens, solar cells, and solid‐state lighting, and is expected to have a broad and long‐term impact on many fields from consumer electronics to energy conversion and generation.</p>
