Abstract:The waterborne polyurethane was modified by epoxy resin E-44 and methyl methacrylate (MMA) via copolymerization of hydroxyl ethyl acrylate ( HEA) and MMA to produce the core-shell crosslink composite emulsion polyurethane-acrylate (PUA), in which the core part is formed by acrylic ester, the shell part is PU and HEA forms the bridge between the core and shell. The modified waterborne polyurethane combines the outstanding properties of those three kinds of polymers mentioned above, e.g. good flexibility, strong adhesion and low-temperature resistance just like the polyurethane, water resistance and good weathering quality like acrylate, and high modulus and chemical resistance like epoxy resin. The experimental results show that the hardness, tensile strength and water resistance of PUA film increase with increasing the amount of epoxy resin E-44 and MMA, but its elongation at break and the stability of PUA composite emulsion will be decreased. The roundup properties of the modified waterborne polyurethane will be better if the amount of E-44 and MMA added are 4% and 20%~30%, respectively.
