Abstract:In ultra high field, the wave behavior results in significant RF field inhomogeneities. To solve the high field RF problem, the traveling wave MRI, has been introduced to uniformly excite spins over a greater volume than that of the conventional volume RF coils. However, in large objects, such as the human head, the traveling wave method does not provide good RF uniformity due to the reflection and interference effects on account of largely difference of dielectric constants at boundaries between the tissues and the air. To eliminate the wave-impedance mismatch, we used additional dielectric material to fill the cavity around the head to mitigate the field inhomogeneities for human head imaging. The three-dimensional finite difference time domain numerical models at 300 MHz are used to theoretically validate the effectiveness of the approach. © 2011 IEEE.

Abstract:Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) technique is one of the most commonly used imaging diagnostic techniques for pate diseases at present.Metal and alloy are commonly used in dental practice. The artifacts on MRI caused by metal and alloy may result in attenuation of signal intensity, image distortion and signal loss, which severely influences imaging quality. So these materials confine the application of MRI on pate. In this paper, the influence of dental metallic materials on MRI is discussed. It expounds the generation and principals of MR artifacts, the influence of artifacts of metal dental prosthetic restoration, the effects of choosing different MR sequences and imaging weight on MRI, as well as how to prevent and diminish artifacts, to provide reference for clinical practice.

Abstract:Objective To verify the usefulness of the corresponding compensation techniques for MRI artifacts after analyzing their generation mechanism. Methods Different compensation techniques were used to eliminate relative artifacts from the angle of improving background,calibrating software and hardware,editing parameters or instructing patients in scanning the patient or phantom with 1.0TMR and 1.5TMR. Results Artifacts were controlled to different extents and the quality of most MR images were improved. Conclusion Most artifacts can be eliminated completely by the use of corresponding compensation techniques while some others only be reduced a little or shifted.
Characterization and Reduction of X-Gradient Induced Eddy Currents in A Ndfeb Magnetic Resonance Imaging Magnet-3d Finite Element Method-Based Numerical Studies

Abstract:In permanent magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) systems, pulsed gradient fields induce strong eddy currents in the conducting structures of the magnet. The gradient field for image encoding is perturbed by these eddy currents, thus leading to MR image distortions. The conventional approach for the reduction of the eddy current effects is to employ passive shielding (an eddy current board). However, the analysis of the passive shielding structure is typically nonoptimal. In this article, a comprehensive 3D finite element method (FEM) model for the characterization of eddy currents in the ferromagnetic materials of the magnet is developed, which is helpful for the evaluation of the shielding effects and the improvement of passive shielding designs. During the numerical analyses, the eddy current source was introduced through X-gradient coils, nonlinearity, and the anisotropy of the laminated silicon steel structure was considered, with the selection of a penalty factor in the FEM governing equations being also detailed. Optimized Slab Selective Parallel RF Excitation at Ultra High Field

Abstract:This work presents a novel approach to achieve homogeneous single slab excitation under severe RF field inhomogeneity in ultra high field MRI. Based on the recently developed parallel transmission technology, an optimized 3D tailored RF (TRF) pulse has been proposed to upgrade the excitation performance. The pulse is designed with a dedicatedly chosen trajectory that is tailored according to the highly responsible-for-desired-pattern k-space area. An iterative RF pulse design method is employed to ensure the excitation accuracy. Test simulations show that the proposed scheme optimally upgrades the excitation, and more importantly, reduces the required peak RF energy, which further upgrades the safety of clinical applications.

Abstract:This work presented a method for computation of magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) coil excited electromagnetic fields (EMFs) inside the human head. A head-sized, multilayered dielectric spherical head phantom with measured radial conductivity and permittivity profiles was constructed, and then DyadicGreen's function (DGF)-based method was used to calculate the EMFs inside the head phantom. This solution is suitable for calculation of EMFs excited by any radio-frequency (RF) resonators whose current distributions can be calculated by method of moment (MoM). The calculated EMFs can then be used to deduce MRI imaging parameters. Results show that the computation time of the proposed method is much lower than that of a full finite difference time domain (FDTD) calculation using a complex head model, and the computation speed is increased by more than ten-fold. Simulation demonstrates that the magnetic and electric fields in human head are affected by the frequency, and that field/tissue interactions increase with the frequency increases, and that the inhomogeneity of the magnetic field in human head increases, thus resulting in the distortion of MR signals. The proposed DGF/MoM method can be used for high field MRI coil design, for example, the rapid evaluation of RF resonator (surface and volume coils) and high performance gradient system designs.

Abstract:The acoustic problem of the split gradient coil is one challenge in a Magnetic Resonance Imaging and Linear Accelerator (MRI-LINAC) system. In this paper, we aimed to develop a scheme to reduce the acoustic noise of the split gradient coil. First, a split gradient assembly with an asymmetric configuration was designed to avoid vibration in same resonant modes for the two assembly cylinders. Next, the outer ends of the split main magnet were constructed using horn structures, which can distribute the acoustic field away from patient region. Finally, a finite element method (FEM) was used to quantitatively evaluate the effectiveness of the above acoustic noise reduction scheme. Simulation results found that the noise could be maximally reduced by 6.9 dB and 5.6 dB inside and outside the central gap of the split MRI system, respectively, by increasing the length of one gradient assembly cylinder by 20 cm. The optimized horn length was observed to be 55 cm, which could reduce noise by up to 7.4 dB and 5.4 dB inside and outside the central gap, respectively. The proposed design could effectively reduce the acoustic noise without any influence on the application of other noise reduction methods.

Abstract:The high-field superconducting magnets as a core components of the MRI has been widely used in the fields of medical equipment. The superconducting magnet technology depends on the development of superconducting material properties and cryogenic technology. Compared with conventional imaging equipment, ultra-high-field magnetic resonance imaging technology has unparalleled advantages of the improvement for medical imaging equipment. At present, the magnetic field of ultra-high-field superconducting magnet is 9.4-11.75 T for the human body. For animals, the maximum magnetic field has reached 17 T. Large scale application of superconducting technology has become the only way to be able to form high-field magnet scale industrialization. In this paper, a review on the development of high field MRI system will be presented including in the superconducting and permanent MRI systems for all kind of the applications in the medical diagnosis and interventional therapy with solenoid and open structures.
Radiofrequency interference in magnetic resonance imaging: Identification and rectification

Abstract:Radiofrequency (RF) interference artifact is a common type of magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) artifacts caused by the presence of unwanted RF field inside the scanner room. The artifact has the appearance of parallel bright lines or bands that resemble zippers, which can mimic pathology, obstruct the viewing of underlining tissues, and lower image signal-to-noise ratio, affecting the diagnostic evaluation of the image and sometimes even rendering it non-diagnostic. Due to the presence of multiple possible sources of RF interference in MRI and potential nonrelated MRI artifacts that resemble RF interference artifact, it may be difficult to effectively and timely resolve the artifact problem. The objective of this paper is to provide a review of RF interference in MRI and to offer guidance in the prompt and correct identification of the associated image artifacts as well as efficient approaches to resolve and prevent RF interference problems. This article should serve as a useful educational reference to magnetic resonance (MR) technologists and radiologists in dealing with MR image artifacts that may be caused by RF interference.
Unfamiliar Artifacts and Elimination of MRI Installation and Adjustment

Abstract:Objective: 5 examples of unfamiliar artifacts of 0.36T MRI at past 3 years presented,and the reason and solution were analysed.Result: The result shows that the main interference is from:a.External(not related to strict platform screen doors lead outside RF interference into the magnet space);b.indoor lights,laser positioning lights;RF and gradient coils(heat insulation material properties decreased after the instantaneous discharge);c.Cooling system components(especially water mains connector);signal acquisition of analog circuits(amplifiers,connect ware,filter plate);d.Digital Circuit(ADC,impon-derables less).Conclusion: We expect the work is benefit to magnetic resonance practitioners.

Abstract:This paper presents an approach to simulate the stent artifacts in magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) based on electromagnetic (EM) analysis. The metallic stent disturbs the static magnetic field (B0) and the radiofrequency (RF) field during the MRI procedure, which consequently results in susceptibility artifacts and RF shielding artifacts in MR image. Both the static and RF field distributions with the metallic stent in a uniform imaging phantom are calculated using the commercial finite element method (FEM) software JMAG 10.0. The images with stent artifacts are simulated by an MRI simulator, according to the calculated field distributions. The susceptibility artifacts and RF shielding artifacts are investigated at several conditions respectively. It can be concluded that the stent made of Ni-Ti alloy with a small magnetic susceptibility is promising to obtain the inside information with small susceptibility artifacts, and the stent with the open-cell design causes smaller RF shielding artifacts in MRI than the close-cell design.

Abstract:As one of the most promising multi-parameter quantitative MRI techniques, MRF also suffers from the problem of insufficient imaging resolution. To this end, we introduced the radio frequency encoding idea of gSlider, which has been successful in the field of dMRI, into MRF and proposed MRF-gSlider, which improves the slice resolution of imaging results while maintaining high SNR based on the original advantages of MRF. In order to verify the effectiveness of this method, we designed a series of phantom and in vivo experiments, and conducted comprehensive evaluation and analysis. Experimental results show that the proposed method performs well in multiple dimensions such as quantitative accuracy, consistency, and repeatability, showing its practical significance for clinical application and scientific research.

Abstract:Abstract Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) around metal implants has been challenging due to magnetic susceptibility differences between metal implants and adjacent tissues, resulting in image signal loss, geometric distortion, and loss of fat suppression. These artifacts can compromise the diagnostic accuracy and the evaluation of surrounding anatomical structures. As the prevalence of total joint replacements continues to increase in our aging society, there is a need for proper radiological assessment of tissues around metal implants to aid clinical decision-making in the management of post-operative complaints and complications. Various techniques for reducing metal artifacts in musculoskeletal imaging have been explored in recent years. One approach focuses on improving hardware components. High-density multi-channel radiofrequency (RF) coils, parallel imaging techniques, and gradient warping correction enable signal enhancement, image acquisition acceleration, and geometric distortion minimization. In addition, the use of susceptibility-matched implants and low-field MRI helps to reduce magnetic susceptibility differences. The second approach focuses on metal artifact reduction sequences such as view-angle tilting (VAT) and slice-encoding for metal artifact correction (SEMAC). Iterative reconstruction algorithms, deep learning approaches, and post-processing techniques are used to estimate and correct artifact-related errors in reconstructed images. This article reviews recent developments in clinically applicable metal artifact reduction techniques as well as advances in MR hardware. The review provides a better understanding of the basic principles and techniques, as well as an awareness of their limitations, allowing for a more reasoned application of these methods in clinical settings.

Abstract:Electromagnetic (EM) computational modeling is used extensively during the development of a Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) scanner, its installation, and use. MRI, which relies on interactions between nuclear magnetic moments and the applied magnetic fields, uses a range of EM tools to optimize all of the magnetic fields required to produce the image. The main field magnet is designed to exacting specifications but challenges in manufacturing, installation, and use require additional tools to maintain target operational performance. The gradient magnetic fields, which provide the primary signal localization mechanism, are designed under another set of complex design trade-offs which include conflicting imaging performance specifications and patient physiology. Gradients are largely impervious to external influences, but are also used to enhance main field operational performance. The radiofrequency (RF) magnetic fields, which are used to elicit the signals fundamental to the MR image, are a challenge to optimize for a host of reasons that include patient safety, image quality, cost optimization, and secondary signal localization capabilities. This review outlines these issues and the EM modeling used to optimize MRI system performance.

Abstract:Simultaneous recording of extracellular neural signals and magnetic resonance image (MRI) is believed to be of great importance for the understanding of brain function. However, the electromagnetic interactions between the recording devices and MRI scanning environment are notorious and potential threats that involve radiofrequency heating, harmful magnetic force, and artifacts in both electrical signals and images. In this review, we summarized the solutions to remove or reduce the MRI-related artifacts in the invasive electrophysiological signals, including designs of recording systems and off-line data preprocessing algorithms.

Abstract:Magnetic resonance (MR) images free of artefacts are of pivotal importance for MR-guided ion radiotherapy. This study investigates MR image quality for simultaneous irradiation in an experimental setup using phantom imaging as well as in-vivo imaging. Observed artefacts are described within the study and their cause is investigated with the goal to find conclusions and solutions for potential future hybrid devices.Approach:An open magnetic resonance scanner with a field strength of 0.25 T has been installed in front of an ion beamline. Simultaneous MRI and irradiation using raster scanning were performed to analyze image quality in dedicated phantoms. Magnetic field measurements were performed to assist the explanation of observed artifacts. In addition, in-vivo images were acquired by operating the magnets for beam scanning without transporting a beam.Main Results:The additional frequency component within the isocenter caused by the fringe field of the horizontal beam scanning magnet correlates with the amplitude and frequency of the scanning magnet steering and can cause ghosting artifacts in the images. These are amplified with high currents and fast operating of the scanning magnet. Applying a real-time capable pulse sequence in-vivo revealed no ghosting artifacts despite a continuously changing current pattern and a clinical treatment plan activation scheme, suggesting that the use of fast imaging is beneficial for the aim of creating high quality in-beam MR images. This result suggests, that the influence of the scanning magnets on the MR acquisition might be of negligible importance and does not need further measures like extensive magnetic shielding of the scanning magnets.Significance:Our study delimited artefacts observed in MR images acquired during simultaneous raster scanning ion beam irradiation. The application of a fast pulse sequence showed no image artefacts and holds the potential that online MR imaging in future hybrid devices might be feasible.&#xD.

Abstract:The signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) is one of the most important criteria for evaluating the image quality in magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), and metasurfaces with unique electromagnetic properties provide a novel method for SNR improvement. However, their applications in clinical MRI are highly restricted by the inhomogeneous enhancement of the magnetic field and interference in the radio frequency (RF) transmitting field. In this study, an adaptive cylindrical wireless metasurface (ACWM) with homogeneous field enhancement and adaptive resonant modes is reported. The ACWM automatically switches its resonant modes between the partial (transmitting period) and whole (receiving period) resonance, which enables it to not only eliminate the interference in RF transmitting field, but also greatly enhance the SNR. Its adaptability also makes the ACWM applicable to all common clinical sequences without any modifications in the scan parameters. The SNR of MRI images of the human wrist, acquired with ACWM, is two to four times compared with the conventional coil. This work offers a practical control method to fill the scientific knowledge gaps between the preclinical research and medical applications for metasurfaces, and suggests a novel and powerful tool for diagnosing and evaluating human diseases.

Electric Field and SAR Reduction in High Impedance RF Arrays by Using High Permittivity Materials for 7T MR Imaging

Abstract:Higher frequencies and shorter wavelengths present significant design issues at ultra-high fields, making multi-channel array setup a critical component for ultra-high field MR imaging. The requirement for multi-channel arrays, as well as ongoing efforts to increase the number of channels in an array, are always limited by the major issue known as inter-element coupling. This coupling affects the current and field distribution, noise correlation between channels, and frequency of array elements, lowering imaging quality and performance. To realize the full potential of UHF MRI, we must ensure that the coupling between array elements is kept to a minimum. High-impedance coils allow array systems to completely realize their potential by providing optimal isolation while requiring minimal design modifications. These minor design changes, which demand the use of low capacitance on the conventional loop to induce elevated impedance, result in a significant safety hazard that cannot be overlooked. High electric fields are formed across these low capacitance lumped elements, which may result in higher SAR values in the imaging subject, depositing more power and, ultimately, providing a greater risk of tissue heating-related injury to the human sample. We propose an innovative method of utilizing high-dielectric material to effectively reduce electric fields and SAR values in the imaging sample while preserving the B1 efficiency and inter-element decoupling between the array elements to address this important safety concern with minimal changes to the existing array design comprising high-impedance coils.
