Abstract:Films produced by quenching CuAl vapour onto cooled substrates at liquid nitrogen temperature are investigated by transmission electron microscopy (TEM), energy dispersive spectrometry and electric resistivity measurements. In our investigated composition range of 25–78 at% of Al, it was observed that the as-deposited films tend to form amorphous alloys and that a transformation process from this less stable state through increasingly more stable states to the fional equilibrium state takes place on annealing. The crystallization temperature is composition dependent and, within the range of 64–78 at% Al, an amorphous phase which is stable above room temperature was obtained. Finally, the stability relationships between the amorphous and related metastable phases are discussed in terms of the structure of the alloy films and their compositional variation. A brief summary of the principles for determining the best glass-forming range is also presented.
