Abstract:The C–W2B5 composites with W2B5 content from 30 to 70 vol.% were fabricated by reaction hot pressing sintering. The effect of W2B5 content on the tribological behavior of the composites was investigated by the block-on-ring test in air. For comparison, the tribological behavior of pure graphite was also studied. The results revealed that the friction coefficients of the C–W2B5 composites increased with increasing W2B5 content and applied load. The wear rates of the C–W2B5 composites were almost equal tested at 15 N, but increased as the W2B5 content varying from 30 to 50 vol.%, followed by an abrupt drop at the W2B5 content of 70 vol.% tested at 35 N. All the wear rates of the composites were lower than that of pure graphite. Careful examination of the worn surface revealed that the composition of the mechanically mixed layer (MML) formed on the worn surface influenced the friction coefficients and wear rates of the composites. A graphite-rich MML facilitated the low friction coefficient whereas the graphite-short MML resulted in high friction coefficient. The detachment and removal of the MML contributed to the wear of C–W2B5 composites.
