Abstract:In this paper, it is shown that every orientable closed 3-manifold maps with nonzero degree onto at most finitely many homeomorphically distinct irreducible nongeometric orientable closed 3-manifolds. Moreover, given any nonzero integer, as a mapping degree up to sign, every orientable closed 3-manifold maps with that degree onto only finitely many homeomorphically distinct orientable closed 3-manifolds.

Abstract:We present an extensive study of a large, room temperature negative magnetoresistance (MR) effect in tris-(8-hydroxyquinoline) aluminum sandwich devices in weak magnetic fields. The effect is similar to that previously discovered in polymer devices. We characterize this effect and discuss its dependence on field direction, voltage, temperature, film thickness, and electrode materials. The MR effect reaches almost 10% at fields of approximately 10 mT at room temperature. The effect shows only a weak temperature dependence and is independent of the sign and direction of the magnetic field. Measuring the devices' current-voltage characteristics, we find that the current depends on the voltage through a power-law. We find that the magnetic field changes the prefactor of the power-law, whereas the exponent remains unaffected. We also studied the effect of the magnetic field on the electroluminescence (MEL) of the devices and analyze the relationship between MR and MEL. We find that the largest part of MEL is simply a consequence of a change in device current caused by the MR effect.

Abstract:We prove a finiteness result for the $\partial$-patterned guts decomposition of all 3-manifolds obtained by splitting a given orientable, irreducible and $\partial$-irreducible 3-manifold along a closed incompressible surface. Then using the Thurston norm, we deduce that the JSJ-pieces of all 3-manifolds dominated by a given compact 3-manifold belong, up to homeomorphism, to a finite collection of compact 3-manifolds. We show also that any closed orientable 3-manifold dominates only finitely many integral homology spheres and any compact 3-manifolds orientable 3-manifold dominates only finitely many exterior of knots in $S^3$.

Abstract:Given two closed oriented manifolds M,N$M,N$ of the same dimension, we denote the set of degrees of maps from M$M$ to N$N$ by D(M,N)$D(M,N)$. The set D(M,N)$D(M,N)$ always contains zero. We show the following (non-)realisability results. On the one hand, not every infinite set of integers (containing 0 0 ) is a mapping degree set (Neofytidis, Wang, and Wang [Bull. Lond. Math. Abstract:We show that for a smooth, closed 2-connected manifold $M$ of dimension $d \geq 6$, the topological mapping class group $\pi_0 \mathrm{Homeo}(M)$ is residually finite, in contrast to the situation for the smooth mapping class group $\pi_0 \mathrm{Diff}(M)$. Combined with a result of Sullivan, this implies that $\pi_0 \mathrm{Homeo}(M)$ is an arithmetic group. The proof uses embedding calculus, and is of independent interest: we show that the $T_k$-mapping class group, $\pi_0 T_k \mathrm{Diff}(M)$, is residually finite, for all $k \in \mathbb{N}$. The statement on the topological mapping class group is then deduced from the Weiss fibre sequence, convergence of the embedding calculus tower and smoothing theory.

Abstract:. W.Thurston raised the following question in 1976: Suppose that a compact 3-manifold M is not covered by (surface) × S^1 or a torus bundle over S^1 . If M_1 and M_2 are two homeomorphic finite covering spaces of M , do they have the same covering degree?¶For so called geometric 3-manifolds (a famous conjecture is that all compact orientable 3-manifolds are geometric), it is known that the answer is affirmative if M is not a non-trivial graph manifold.¶In this paper, we prove that the answer for non-trivial graph manifolds is also affirmative. Hence the answer for the Thurston's question is complete for geometric 3-manifolds. Some properties of 3-manifold groups are also derived.

Abstract:We study a generalized Witten's finiteness conjecture for the skein modules of oriented compact 3-manifolds with boundary. We formulate an equivalent version of the generalized finiteness conjecture using handlebodies and 2-handles, and prove the conjecture for some classes with the handlebodies of genus 2 and 3 using the equivalent version.

Abstract:We study the classifying space B Diff(M) of the diffeomorphism group of a connected, compact, orientable 3-manifold M. In the case that M is reducible we build a contractible space parametrising the systems of reducing spheres. We use this to prove that if M has non-empty boundary, then B Diff(M rel boundary) has the homotopy type of a finite CW complex. This was conjectured by Kontsevich and appears on the Kirby problem list as Problem 3.48. As a consequence, we are able to show that for every compact, orientable 3-manifold M, B Diff(M) has finite type.

Abstract:In this paper we compute the mapping class group of closed simply-connected 6-manifolds $M$ which look like complete intersections, i.~e.~ $H_2(M;\mathbb Z) \cong \mathbb Z $ and $x^3 \ne 0$ where $x \in H^2(M; \mathbb Z)$ is a generator. We determine some algebraic properties of the mapping class group; for example we compute its abelianization and its center. We show that modulo the center the mapping class group is residually finite and virtually torsion-free. We also study low dimensional homology groups. The results are very similar to the computation of the mapping class group of Riemann surfaces. We give generators of the mapping class group, and generators and relations for the subgroup acting trivially on $\pi_{3}(M)$.
