Abstract:We study the degree of an L-Lipschitz map between Riemannian manifolds, proving new upper bounds and constructing new examples. For instance, if is the connected sum of k copies of for , then we prove that the maximum degree of an L-Lipschitz self-map of is between and . More generally, we divide simply connected manifolds into three topological types with three different behaviors. Each type is defined by purely topological criteria. For scalable simply connected n-manifolds, the maximal degree is . For formal but nonscalable simply connected n-manifolds, the maximal degree grows roughly like . And for nonformal simply connected n-manifolds, the maximal degree is bounded by for some .

Abstract:The set of degrees of maps D ( M , N ) D(M,N) , where M , N M,N are closed oriented n n -manifolds, always contains 0 and the set of degrees of self-maps D ( M ) D(M) always contains 0 0 and 1 1 . Also, if a , b ∈ D ( M ) a,b\in D(M) , then a b ∈ D ( M ) ab\in D(M) ; a set A ⊆ Z A\subseteq \mathbb {Z} so that a b ∈ A ab\in A for each a , b ∈ A a,b\in A is called multiplicative. On the one hand, not every infinite set of integers (containing 0 0 ) is a mapping degree set (Neofytidis, Wang, and Wang [Bull. Lond. Math. Soc. 55 (2023), pp. 1700–1717]) and, on the other hand, every finite set of integers (containing 0 0 ) is the mapping degree set of some 3 3 -manifolds (Costoya, Muñoz and Viruel [Finite sets containing zero are mapping degree sets, arXiv:2301.13719]). We show the following: Not every multiplicative set A A containing 0 , 1 0,1 is a self-mapping degree set. Abstract:In this paper, it is shown that every orientable closed 3-manifold maps with nonzero degree onto at most finitely many homeomorphically distinct irreducible nongeometric orientable closed 3-manifolds. Moreover, given any nonzero integer, as a mapping degree up to sign, every orientable closed 3-manifold maps with that degree onto only finitely many homeomorphically distinct orientable closed 3-manifolds.

Abstract:Given two closed oriented manifolds M,N$M,N$ of the same dimension, we denote the set of degrees of maps from M$M$ to N$N$ by D(M,N)$D(M,N)$. The set D(M,N)$D(M,N)$ always contains zero. We show the following (non-)realisability results. There exists an infinite subset A$A$ of Z$\mathbb {Z}$ containing 0 which cannot be realised as D(M,N)$D(M,N)$, for any closed oriented n$n$-manifolds M,N$M,N$.Every finite arithmetic progression of integers containing 0 can be realised as D(M,N)$D(M,N)$, for some closed oriented 3-manifolds M,N$M,N$.Together with 0, every finite geometric progression of positive integers starting from 1 can be realised as D(M,N)$D(M,N)$, for some closed oriented manifolds M,N$M,N$.(i)(ii)(iii)

Abstract:Let $\widetilde{I}_{2n,k}$ denote the space of $k$-dimensional, oriented isotropic subspaces of $\mathbb{R}^{2n}$, called the oriented isotropic Grassmannian. Let $f \colon \widetilde{I}_{2n,k} \rightarrow \widetilde{I}_{2m,l} $ be a map between two oriented isotropic Grassmannians of the same dimension, where $k,l \geq 2$. We show that either $(n,k) = (m,l)$ or the degree of $f$ must be zero. Let $\mathbb{R}\widetilde{G}_{m,l}$ denote the oriented real Grassmann manifold. For $k,l \geq 2$ and $\dim{\widetilde{I}_{2n,k}} = \dim{\mathbb{R}\widetilde{G}_{m,l}}$, we also show that the degree of maps $g \colon \mathbb{R} \widetilde{G}_{m,l} \rightarrow \widetilde{I}_{2n,k} $ and $h \colon \widetilde{I}_{2n,k} \rightarrow \mathbb{R} \widetilde{G}_{m,l}$ must be zero.
Large magnetoresistance at room-temperature in small molecular weight organic semiconductor sandwich devices

Abstract:We present an extensive study of a large, room temperature negative magnetoresistance (MR) effect in tris-(8-hydroxyquinoline) aluminum sandwich devices in weak magnetic fields. The effect is similar to that previously discovered in polymer devices. We characterize this effect and discuss its dependence on field direction, voltage, temperature, film thickness, and electrode materials. The MR effect reaches almost 10% at fields of approximately 10 mT at room temperature. The effect shows only a weak temperature dependence and is independent of the sign and direction of the magnetic field. Measuring the devices' current-voltage characteristics, we find that the current depends on the voltage through a power-law. We find that the magnetic field changes the prefactor of the power-law, whereas the exponent remains unaffected. We also studied the effect of the magnetic field on the electroluminescence (MEL) of the devices and analyze the relationship between MR and MEL. We find that the largest part of MEL is simply a consequence of a change in device current caused by the MR effect.

Abstract:Suppose for closed surfaces $M,N$ there exists a continuous map $f:M\to N$ of geometric degree $d>0$. Then $\chi(M)\le d\cdot\chi(N)$. This inequality was first proved by Kneser in case of orientable surfaces and by Edmonds for arbitrary $M,N$. We give a new simple proof of this result. Our proof is completely elementary and does not use additional techniques (such as the factorisation theorem of Edmonds and the absolute degree theory of Hopf).

Abstract:The degree of a map between orientable manifolds is a fundamental concept in topology that aids in understanding the structure and properties of the manifolds and the maps between them. Numerous studies have been conducted on the degree of maps between orientable topological spaces. For each $d \in \mathbb{Z}$, we construct a degree $ d$ simplicial map from a $(2(n+1) \max\{|d|,1\})$-facet colored triangulation of $\mathbb{S}^{n-1} \times \mathbb{S}^1$ to the standard $ 2(n+1) $-facet colored triangulation of $ \mathbb{S}^{n-1} \times \mathbb{S}^1 $. We demonstrate that these are the minimal possible colored triangulations for a degree $d $ simplicial self-map of $\mathbb{S}^{n-1} \times \mathbb{S}^1 $, where $n \geq 2 $. Additionally, we construct a minimal degree $d $ simplicial map from a closed orientable $ n$-manifold to $ \mathbb{S}^n $, where $n \geq 1 $.

Abstract:Let $Crit M$ denote the minimal number of critical points (not necessarily non-degenerate) on a closed smooth manifold $M$. We are interested in the evaluation of $Crit$. It is worth noting that we do not know yet whether $Crit M$ is a homotopy invariant of $M$. This makes the research of $Crit$ a challenging problem. In particular, we pose the following question: given a map $f: M \to N$ of degree 1 of closed manifolds, is it true that $Crit M \geq Crit N$? We prove that this holds in dimension 3 or less. Some high dimension examples are considered. Note also that an affirmative answer to the question implies the homotopy invariance of $Crit$; this simple observation is a good motivation for the research.

Abstract:. W.Thurston raised the following question in 1976: Suppose that a compact 3-manifold M is not covered by (surface) × S^1 or a torus bundle over S^1 . If M_1 and M_2 are two homeomorphic finite covering spaces of M , do they have the same covering degree?¶For so called geometric 3-manifolds (a famous conjecture is that all compact orientable 3-manifolds are geometric), it is known that the answer is affirmative if M is not a non-trivial graph manifold.¶In this paper, we prove that the answer for non-trivial graph manifolds is also affirmative. Hence the answer for the Thurston's question is complete for geometric 3-manifolds. Some properties of 3-manifold groups are also derived.

Abstract:The moduli space of stable rational curves with marked points has two distinguished families of maps: the forgetful maps, given by forgetting some of the markings, and the Kapranov maps, given by complete linear series of $\psi$-classes. The collection of all these maps embeds the moduli space into a product of projective spaces. We call the multidegrees of this embedding ``Kapranov degrees,'' which include as special cases the work of Witten, Silversmith, Gallet--Grasegger--Schicho, Castravet--Tevelev, Postnikov, Cavalieri--Gillespie--Monin, and Gillespie--Griffins--Levinson. We establish, in terms of a combinatorial matching condition, upper bounds for Kapranov degrees and a characterization of their positivity. The positivity characterization answers a question of Silversmith and gives a new proof of Laman's theorem characterizing generically rigid graphs in the plane. We achieve this by proving a recursive formula for Kapranov degrees and by using tools from the theory of error correcting codes.

Abstract:This work focuses on the degree bound of maps between balls with maximum geometric rank and minimum target dimension where this geometric rank occurs. Specifically, we show that rational proper maps between $\mathbb{B}_n$ and $\mathbb{B}_N$ with $n \geq 2$, $N = \frac{n(n+1)}{2}$, and geometric rank $n-1$ cannot have a degree of more than $n+1$.

Abstract:We define the discrete degree of symmetry $disc-sym(X)$ of a closed $n$-manifold $X$ as the biggest $m\geq 0$ such that $X$ supports an effective action of $({\mathbf Z}/r)^m$ for arbitrarily big values of $r$. We prove that if $X$ is connected then $disc-sym(X)\leq 3n/2$. We propose the question of whether for every closed connected $n$-manifold $X$ the inequality $disc-sym(X)\leq n$ holds true, and whether the only closed connected $n$-manifold $X$ for which $disc-sym(X)=n$ is the torus $T^n$. We prove partial results providing evidence for an affirmative answer to this question.

Abstract:The degree of a map between orientable manifolds is a crucial concept in topology, providing deep insights into the structure and properties of the manifolds and the corresponding maps. This concept has been thoroughly investigated, particularly in the realm of simplicial maps between orientable triangulable spaces. In this paper, we concentrate on constructing simplicial degree $d$ self-maps on $n$-spheres. We describe the construction of several such maps, demonstrating that for every $d \in \mathbb{Z} \setminus {0}$, there exists a degree $d$ simplicial map from a triangulated $n$-sphere with $3|d| + n - 1$ vertices to $\mathbb{S}^n_{n+2}$. Further, we prove that, for every $d \in \mathbb{Z} \setminus {0}$, there exists a simplicial map of degree $3 d$ from a triangulated $n$-sphere with $6|d| + n$ vertices, as well as a simplicial map of degree $3d+\frac{d}{|d|}$ from a triangulated $n$-sphere with $6|d|+n+3$ vertices, to $\mathbb{S}^{n}_{n+2}$. Furthermore, we show that for any $|k| \geq 2$ and $n \geq |k|$, a degree $k$ simplicial map exists from a triangulated $n$-sphere $K$ with $|k| + n + 3$ vertices to $\mathbb{S}^n_{n+2}$. We also prove that for $d = 2$ and 3, these constructions produce vertex-minimal degree $d$ self-maps of $n$-spheres. Additionally, for every $n \geq 2$, we construct a degree $n+1$ simplicial map from a triangulated $n$-sphere with $2n + 4$ vertices to $\mathbb{S}^{n}_{n+2}$. We also prove that this construction provides facet minimal degree $n+1$ self-maps of $n$-spheres.

Abstract:Given closed possibly nonorientable surfaces $M,N$, we prove that if a map $f:M\to N$ has degree $d>0$, then $\chi(M)\le d\cdot\chi(N)$. We give all necessary comments on the definition and properties of geometric degree, which can be defined for any map. Our proof is based on the Kneser-Edmonds factorization theorem, simple natural proof of which is also presented.
