Abstract:The goal of this paper is the exact computation of the degrees $\text{deg}(f^n)$ of the iterates of birational maps $f: \mathbb{P}^N \dashrightarrow \mathbb{P}^N$. In the preceding companion paper, a new method has been proposed based on the use of indices of polynomials associated to the local blow-ups used to resolve contractions of hypersurfaces by $f$, and on the control of the factorization of pull-backs of polynomials. This leads to recurrence relations for the degrees and the indices. We apply this method to several illustrative examples in three dimensions. These examples demonstrate the flexibility of the method which, in particular, does not require the construction of an algebraically stable lift of $f$, unlike the previously known methods based on the Picard group.

Abstract:We give examples of birational selfmaps of $\mathbb{P}^d, d \geq 3$, whose dynamical degree is a transcendental number. This contradicts a conjecture by Bellon and Viallet. The proof uses a combination of techniques from algebraic dynamics and diophantine approximation.

Abstract:We give an upper bound for the degree of rational curves in a family that covers a given birationally ruled surface in projective space. The upper bound is stated in terms of the degree, sectional genus and arithmetic genus of the surface. We introduce an algorithm for constructing examples where the upper bound is tight. As an application of our methods we improve an inequality on lattice polygons.

Abstract:We study a family of birational maps of smooth affine quadric 3-folds, {over the complex numbers}, of the form $x_1x_4-x_2x_3=$ constant, which seems to have some (among many others) interesting/unexpected characters: a) they are cohomologically hyperbolic, b) their second dynamical degree is an algebraic number but not an algebraic integer, and c) the logarithmic growth of their periodic points is strictly smaller than their algebraic entropy. These maps are restrictions of a polynomial map on $\mathbb{C}^4$ preserving each of the quadrics. The study in this paper is a mixture of rigorous and experimental ones, where for the experimental study we rely on Bertini which is a reliable and fast software for expensive numerical calculations in complex algebraic geometry.

Abstract:In this note we studied the primitive varieties of general type with $q(X) = dim(X)$ and non-birational bicanonical maps. Let $X$ be such a variety. We bounded the degree of its bicanonical map. If moreover the Albanese variety $Alb(X)$ is simple, we proved that the Euler number $\chi(\omega_X) = 1$, and $|2K_X|$ separates the points mapped to the same general point via the Albanese map.

Abstract:We prove that for a dominant rational self-map $f$ on a quasi-projective variety defined over $\overline{\mathbb{Q}}$, there is a point whose $f$-orbit is well-defined and its arithmetic degree is arbitrary close to the first dynamical degree of $f$. As an application, we prove that Zariski dense orbit conjecture holds for a birational map defined over $\overline{\mathbb{Q}}$ such that the first dynamical degree is strictly larger than the third dynamical degree. In particular, the conjecture holds for birational maps on threefolds with first dynamical degree larger than $1$.

Abstract:Given a projective smooth curve $X$ over any field $k$, we discuss two notions of global $\mathbb{A}^1$ degree of a finite morphism of smooth curves $f: X \to \mathbb{P}^1_k$ satisfying certain conditions. One originates from computing the Euler number of the pullback of the line bundle $\mathscr{O}_{\mathbb{P}^1}(1)$ as a generalization of Kass and Wickelgren's construction of Euler numbers. The other originates from the construction of global $\mathbb{A}^1$ degree of morphisms of projective curves by Kass, Levine, Solomon, and Wickelgren as a generalization of Morel's construction of $\mathbb{A}^1$-Brouwer degree of a morphism $f: \mathbb{P}^1_k \to \mathbb{P}^1_k$. We prove that under certain conditions on $N$, both notions of global $\mathbb{A}^1$ degrees of covering maps between modular curves $X_0(N) \to X(1)$, $X_1(N) \to X(1)$, and $X(N) \to X(1)$ agree to be equal to sums of hyperbolic elements $\langle 1 \rangle + \langle -1 \rangle$ in the Grothendieck-Witt ring $\mathrm{GW}(k)$ for any field $k$ whose characteristic is coprime to $N$ and the pullback of $\mathscr{O}_{\mathbb{P}^1}(1)$ is relatively oriented.

Abstract:Let $(X,B)$ be a log Calabi--Yau pair of dimension $n$, index one, and birational complexity $c$. We show that $(X,B)$ has a crepant birational model that admits a tower of Mori fiber spaces of which at least $n-c$ are conic fibrations. Motivated by the proof of the previous statement, we introduce new measures of the complexity of a log Calabi--Yau pair; the alteration complexity and the conic complexity. We characterize when these invariants are zero. Finally, we give applications of the tools of the main theorem to birational superrigidity, Fano hypersurfaces, dual complexes, Weil indices of Fano varieties, and klt singularities.

Abstract:Let $X$ be a general cubic hypersurface in $\mathbb P^4$. If $x\in X$ is a general point there are exactly six distinct lines in $X$ passing through $x$, that lie on the rank 3 quadric cone with vertex $x$ of lines that have intersection multiplicity at least 3 with $X$ in $x$. So there is a natural rational map $X\dasharrow \mathcal M_2$. In this paper we compute its degree to be 2074320.

Abstract:Abstract We study in this article three birational invariants of projective hyper-Kähler manifolds: the degree of irrationality, the fibering gonality, and the fibering genus. We first improve the lower bound in a recent result of Voisin saying that the fibering genus of a Mumford–Tate very general projective hyper-Kähler manifold is bounded from below by a constant depending on its dimension and the second Betti number. We also study the relations between these birational invariants for projective $K3$ surfaces of Picard number $1$ and study the asymptotic behaviors of their degree of irrationality and fibering genus.

Abstract:Let $\{F_n, n\ge 8\}$ be a family of diffeomorphisms on real rational surfaces that are birationally equivalent to birational maps on $\mathbf{P}^2(\mathbb{R})$. In this article, we investigate the mapping classes of the diffeomorphisms $F_n, n\ge 8$. These diffeomorphisms are reducible with unique invariant irreducible curves, and we determine the mapping classes of their restrictions, $\hat F_n, n \ge 8$, on the cut surfaces, showing that they are pseudo-Anosov and do not arise from Penner's construction. For $n=8$, Lehmer's number is realized as the stretch factor of $\hat F_8$, a pseudo-Anosov map on a once-punctured genus $5$ orientable surface. The diffeomorphism $\hat F_8$ is a new geometric realization of a Lehmer's number.

Abstract:Let $X$ be a complex projective variety. Suppose that the group of birational automorphisms of $X$ contains finite subgroups isomorphic to $(\mathbb{Z}/N\mathbb{Z})^r$ for $r$ fixed and $N$ arbitrarily large. We show that $r$ does not exceed $2\dim(X)$. Moreover, the equality holds if and only if $X$ is birational to an abelian variety. We also show that an analogous result holds for groups of bimeromorphic automorphisms of compact Kähler spaces, under some additional assumptions.

Abstract:Nonsingular projective 3-folds $V$ of general type can be naturally classified into 18 families according to the pluricanonical section index${\it\delta}(V):=\text{min}\{m\mid P_{m}\geqslant 2\}$ since $1\leqslant {\it\delta}(V)\leqslant 18$ due to our previous series (I, II). Based on our further classification to 3-folds with ${\it\delta}(V)\geqslant 13$ and an intensive geometrical investigation to those with ${\it\delta}(V)\leqslant 12$, we prove that $\text{Vol}(V)\geqslant \frac{1}{1680}$ and that the pluricanonical map ${\rm\Phi}_{m}$ is birational for all $m\geqslant 61$, which greatly improves known results. An optimal birationality of ${\rm\Phi}_{m}$ for the case ${\it\delta}(V)=2$ is obtained. As an effective application, we study projective 4-folds of general type with $p_{g}\geqslant 2$ in the last section.

Abstract:The moduli space of stable rational curves with marked points has two distinguished families of maps: the forgetful maps, given by forgetting some of the markings, and the Kapranov maps, given by complete linear series of $\psi$-classes. The collection of all these maps embeds the moduli space into a product of projective spaces. We call the multidegrees of this embedding ``Kapranov degrees,'' which include as special cases the work of Witten, Silversmith, Gallet--Grasegger--Schicho, Castravet--Tevelev, Postnikov, Cavalieri--Gillespie--Monin, and Gillespie--Griffins--Levinson. We establish, in terms of a combinatorial matching condition, upper bounds for Kapranov degrees and a characterization of their positivity. The positivity characterization answers a question of Silversmith and gives a new proof of Laman's theorem characterizing generically rigid graphs in the plane. We achieve this by proving a recursive formula for Kapranov degrees and by using tools from the theory of error correcting codes.

Abstract:We solve three enumerative problems concerning families of planar maps. More precisely, we establish algebraic equations for the generating function of non-separable triangulations in which all vertices have degree at least d, for a certain value d chosen in {3, 4, 5}. The originality of the problem lies in the fact that degree restrictions are placed both on vertices and faces. Our proofs first follow Tutte's classical approach: we decompose maps by deleting the root and translate the decomposition into an equation satisfied by the generating function of the maps under consideration. Then we proceed to solve the equation obtained using a recent technique that extends the so-called quadratic method.
