Abstract: It is shown in this paper that given any closed oriented hyperbolic 3-manifold, every closed oriented 3-manifold is mapped onto by a finite cover of that manifold via a map of degree 1, or in other words, virtually 1-dominated by that manifold. This improves a known result of virtual 2-domination. The proof invokes a recently developed enhanced version of the connection principle in good pants constructions.

Abstract:We prove a finiteness result for the $\partial$-patterned guts decomposition of all 3-manifolds obtained by splitting a given orientable, irreducible and $\partial$-irreducible 3-manifold along a closed incompressible surface. Then using the Thurston norm, we deduce that the JSJ-pieces of all 3-manifolds dominated by a given compact 3-manifold belong, up to homeomorphism, to a finite collection of compact 3-manifolds. We show also that any closed orientable 3-manifold dominates only finitely many integral homology spheres and any compact 3-manifolds orientable 3-manifold dominates only finitely many exterior of knots in $S^3$.
Large magnetoresistance at room-temperature in small molecular weight organic semiconductor sandwich devices

Abstract:We present an extensive study of a large, room temperature negative magnetoresistance (MR) effect in tris-(8-hydroxyquinoline) aluminum sandwich devices in weak magnetic fields. The effect is similar to that previously discovered in polymer devices. We characterize this effect and discuss its dependence on field direction, voltage, temperature, film thickness, and electrode materials. The MR effect reaches almost 10% at fields of approximately 10 mT at room temperature. The effect shows only a weak temperature dependence and is independent of the sign and direction of the magnetic field. Measuring the devices' current-voltage characteristics, we find that the current depends on the voltage through a power-law. We find that the magnetic field changes the prefactor of the power-law, whereas the exponent remains unaffected. We also studied the effect of the magnetic field on the electroluminescence (MEL) of the devices and analyze the relationship between MR and MEL. We find that the largest part of MEL is simply a consequence of a change in device current caused by the MR effect.

Abstract:Murphy and the second author showed that a generic closed Riemannian manifold has no totally geodesic submanifolds, provided it is at least four dimensional. Lytchak and Petrunin established the same thing in dimension 3. For the higher dimensional result, the generic set is open and dense in the $C^{q}$--topology for any $% q\geq 2.$ In Lytchak and Petrunin's work, the generic set is a dense $G_{\delta }$ in the $C^{q}$-topology for any $q\geq 2.$ Here we show that the set of such metrics on a compact $3$-manifold contains a set that is open and dense in the $C^{q}$-topology for any $q\geq 3.$

Abstract:We define a condition called almost strict domination for pairs of representations ρ1:π1(Sg,n)→PSL(2,R) , ρ2:π1(Sg,n)→G , where G is the isometry group of a Hadamard manifold, and prove that it holds if and only if one can find a (ρ1,ρ2) ‐equivariant spacelike maximal surface in a certain pseudo‐Riemannian manifold, unique up to fixing some parameters. The proof amounts to setting up and solving an interesting variational problem that involves infinite energy harmonic maps. Adapting a construction of Tholozan, we construct all such representations and parametrise the deformation space. When G=PSL(2,R) , an almost strictly dominating pair is equivalent to the data of an anti‐de Sitter 3‐manifold with specific properties. The results on maximal surfaces provide a parametrisation of the deformation space of such 3‐manifolds as a union of components in a PSL(2,R)×PSL(2,R) relative representation variety.

Abstract:We investigate what kind of closed 3-manifolds can admit locally standard (Z(2))(3)-actions. In particular, we will prove that for a closed connected 3-manifold M with H-1 (M; Z(2)) = 0, M admits a locally standard (Z(2))(3)-action if and only if M is a connected sum of 8 copies of a Z(2)-homology sphere N. So if such an M is irreducible, it must be homeomorphic to S-3. Moreover, the argument can be extended to study orientable rational homology 3-spheres M with H-1 (M; Z(2)) congruent to Z(2) which admits locally standard (Z(2))(3)-actions. (C) 2013 Elsevier B.V. Abstract:As a generalization of Davis-Januszkiewicz theory, there is an essential link between locally standard $(\Z_2)^n$-actions (or $T^n$-actions) actions and nice manifolds with corners, so that a class of nicely behaved equivariant cut-and-paste operations on locally standard actions can be carried out in step on nice manifolds with corners. Based upon this, we investigate what kinds of closed manifolds admit locally standard $(\Z_2)^n$-actions; especially for the 3-dimensional case. Suppose $M$ is an orientable closed connected 3-manifold. When $H_1(M;\Z_2)=0$, it is shown that $M$ admits a locally standard $(\Z_2)^3$-action if and only if $M$ is homeomorphic to a connected sum of 8 copies of some $\Z_2$-homology sphere $N$, and if further assuming $M$ is irreducible, then $M$ must be homeomorphic to $S^3$. In addition, the argument is extended to rational homology 3-sphere $M$ with $H_1(M;\Z_2) \cong \Z_2$ and an additional assumption that the $(\Z_2)^3$-action has a fixed point.

Abstract:A 3-manifold M is said to have Property C if the degrees of finite coverings over M are determined by the manifolds. Thurston asked the following questions: is there a real-valued invariant of 3-manifolds with a certain covering property, and which 3-manifolds have Property C? For geometric manifolds the conjecture is that M has Property C if and only if it is not covered by (surface) x S-1 or a torus bundle over S-1. With the aid of the Gromov norm, the conjecture is quickly reduced to the case of graph manifolds.In this paper we define a new invariant omega(M) for graph manifolds. It has the covering property that if N is a d-fold covering space of M, then omega(N) = d omega(M). Thus in the generic case, when omega(M) not equal 0, the manifold M has Property C. We also use the methods to prove two other results. The first classifies all geometric manifolds that admit non-trivial self-coverings. The second solves a problem of Gonzales-Acuna and Whitten about the cohopficity of 3-manifold groups, and determines all closed geometric manifolds that have cohopfian fundamental groups.

Abstract:We classify $SU(2)$-cyclic and $SU(2)$-abelian 3-manifolds, for which every representation of the fundamental group into $SU(2)$ has cyclic or abelian image respectively, among geometric 3-manifolds which are not hyperbolic. As an application, we give examples of hyperbolic 3-manifolds which do not admit degree-1 maps to any Seifert fibered manifold other than $S^3$ or a lens space. We also produce infinitely many one-cusped hyperbolic manifolds with at least four $SU(2)$-cyclic Dehn fillings, one more than the number of cyclic fillings allowed by the cyclic surgery theorem.

Abstract:We prove that any compact, orientable 3-manifold with empty or incompressible toral boundary is profinitely almost rigid among all compact, orientable, boundary-incompressible 3-manifolds, i.e. the profinite completion of its fundamental group determines its homeomorphism type up to finitely many possibilities. Moreover, the profinite completion of the fundamental group of a mixed 3-manifold, together with the peripheral structure, uniquely determines the homeomorphism type of its Seifert part (i.e. the maximal graph manifold components in the JSJ-decomposition). On the other hand, without assigning the peripheral structure, the profinite completion of a mixed 3- manifold group may not even determine the fundamental group of its Seifert part. The proof is based on JSJ-decomposition.

Abstract:. W.Thurston raised the following question in 1976: Suppose that a compact 3-manifold M is not covered by (surface) × S^1 or a torus bundle over S^1 . If M_1 and M_2 are two homeomorphic finite covering spaces of M , do they have the same covering degree?¶For so called geometric 3-manifolds (a famous conjecture is that all compact orientable 3-manifolds are geometric), it is known that the answer is affirmative if M is not a non-trivial graph manifold.¶In this paper, we prove that the answer for non-trivial graph manifolds is also affirmative. Hence the answer for the Thurston's question is complete for geometric 3-manifolds. Some properties of 3-manifold groups are also derived.
