Abstract:We propose an approach to find constant curvature metrics on triangulated closed 3-manifolds using a finite dimensional variational method whose energy function is the volume. The concept of an angle structure on a tetrahedron and on a triangulated closed 3-manifold is introduced following the work of Casson, Murakami and Rivin. It is proved by A. Kitaev and the author that any closed 3-manifold has a triangulation supporting an angle structure. The moduli space of all angle structures on a triangulated 3-manifold is a bounded open convex polytope in a Euclidean space. The volume of an angle structure is defined. Both the angle structure and the volume are natural generalizations of tetrahedra in the constant sectional curvature spaces and their volume. It is shown that the volume functional can be extended continuously to the compact closure of the moduli space. In particular, the maximum point of the volume functional always exists in the compactification. The main result shows that for a 1-vertex triangulation of a closed 3-manifold if the volume function on the moduli space has a local maximum point, then either the manifold admits a constant curvature Riemannian metric or the manifold contains a non-separating 2-sphere or real projective plane.

Abstract:Let M be the interior of a compact 3-manifold with boundary, and let T be an ideal triangulation of M. This paper describes necessary and sufficient conditions for the existence of angle structures, semi-angle structures and generalised angle structures on ( M; T) respectively in terms of a generalised Euler characteristic function on the solution space of the normal surface theory of ( M; T). This extends previous work of Kang and Rubinstein, and is itself generalised to a more general setting for 3-dimensional pseudo-manifolds.

Abstract:Let $M$ be a non-compact hyperbolic $3$-manifold with finite volume and totally geodesic boundary components. By subdividing mixed ideal polyhedral decompositions of $M$, under some certain topological conditions, we prove that $M$ has an ideal triangulation which admits an angle structure.

Abstract:We show that the hyperbolic structure on a closed, orientable, hyperbolic 3-manifold can be constructed from a solution to the hyperbolic gluing equations using any triangulation with essential edges. The key ingredients in the proof are Thurston's spinning construction and a volume rigidity result attributed by Dunfield to Thurston, Gromov and Goldman. As an application, we show that this gives a new algorithm to detect hyperbolic structures on closed 3-manifolds.

Abstract:We find the first non-octahedral balanced 2-neighborly 3-sphere and the balanced 2-neighborly triangulation of the lens space $L(3,1)$. Each construction has 16 vertices. We show that there exists a balanced 3-neighborly non-spherical 5-manifold with 18 vertices. We also show that the rank-selected subcomplexes of a balanced simplicial sphere do not necessarily have an ear decomposition.

Abstract:We study spaces of circle-valued angle structures, introduced by Feng Luo, on ideal triangulations of 3-manifolds. We prove that the connected components of these spaces are enumerated by certain cohomology groups of the 3-manifold with $\mathbb{Z}_2$-coefficients. Our main theorem shows that this establishes a geometrically natural bijection between the connected components of the spaces of circle-valued angle structures and the obstruction classes to lifting boundary-parabolic $PSL(2,\mathbb{C})$-representations of the fundamental group of the 3-manifold to boundary-unipotent representations into $SL(2,\mathbb{C})$. In particular, these connected components have topological and algebraic significance independent of the ideal triangulations chosen to construct them. The motivation and main application of this study is to understand the domain of the state-integral defining the meromorphic 3D-index of Garoufalidis and Kashaev, necessary in order to classify the boundary-parabolic representations contributing to its asymptotics.

Abstract:We show that extended graph 4-manifolds with positive Euler characteristic cannot support a complex structure. This result stems from a new proof of the fact that there is no compact complex surface which is homotopy equivalent to a closed real-hyperbolic 4-manifold. Finally, we construct infinitely many extended graph 4-manifolds with positive Euler characteristic which support almost complex structures.

Abstract:Motivated by Guo-Luo's generalized circle packings on surfaces with boundary \cite{GL2}, we introduce the generalized Thurston's sphere packings on 3-dimensional manifolds with boundary. Then we investigate the rigidity of the generalized Thurston's sphere packings. We prove that the generalized Thurston's sphere packings are locally determined by the combinatorial scalar curvatures. We further prove the infinitesimal rigidity that the generalized Thurston's sphere packings can not be deformed while keeping the combinatorial Ricci curvatures fixed.

Abstract:A spherical polyhedral surface is a triangulated surface obtained by isometric gluing of spherical triangles. For instance, the boundary of a generic convex polytope in the 3-sphere is a spherical polyhedral surface. This paper investigates these surfaces from the point of view of inner angles. A rigidity result is obtained. A characterization of spherical polyhedral surfaces in terms of the triangulation and the angle assignment is established.

Abstract:Expanding on my former work along with the more recent work of Kasuya and Takase, we demonstrate that for a given link $L \subset M$ which is null-homologous in $H_1(M)$ and for any smooth oriented 2-plane field $\eta$ over $L$ there exists a smooth embedding $F:M \hookrightarrow \mathbb{C}^3$ so that the set of complex tangents to the embedding is exactly $L$ and at each $x \in L$ the holomorphic tangent space is exactly $\eta_x$. Furthermore, we demonstrate how the "analyticity" of a complex tangent, as given by the Bishop invariant, may be determined exactly from the angle formed between the holomorphic complex line and the the curve of complex tangents.

Ideal triangulations of 3-manifolds II: taut and angle structures

Abstract:This is the second in a series of papers in which we investigate ideal triangulations of the interiors of compact 3-manifolds with tori or Klein bottle boundaries. Such triangulations have been used with great effect, following the pioneering work of Thurston. Ideal triangulations are the basis of the computer program SNAPPEA of Weeks and the program SNAP of Coulson, Goodman, Hodgson and Neumann. Casson has also written a program to find hyperbolic structures on such 3-manifolds, by solving Thurston's hyperbolic gluing equations for ideal triangulations. In this second paper, we study the question of when a taut ideal triangulation of an irreducible atoroidal 3-manifold admits a family of angle structures. We find a combinatorial obstruction, which gives a necessary and sufficient condition for the existence of angle structures for taut triangulations. The hope is that this result can be further developed to give a proof of the existence of ideal triangulations admitting (complete) hyperbolic metrics. Our main result answers a question of Lackenby. We give simple examples of taut ideal triangulations which do not admit an angle structure. Also we show that for `layered' ideal triangulations of once-punctured torus bundles over the circle, that if the manodromy is pseudo Anosov, then the triangulation admits angle structures if and only if there are no edges of degree 2. Layered triangulations are generalisations of Thurston's famous triangulation of the Figure 8 knot space. Note that existence of an angle structure easily implies that the 3-manifold has a CAT(0) or relatively word hyperbolic fundamental group.

Abstract:Cosymplectic and normal almost contact structures are analogues of symplectic and complex structures that can be defined on 3-manifolds. Their existence imposes strong topological constraints. Generalized geometry offers a natural common generalization of these two structures: $B_3$-generalized complex structures. We prove that any closed orientable 3-manifold admits such a structure, which can be chosen to be stable, that is, generically cosymplectic up to generalized diffeomorphism.
