Abstract:Let x : M-n -> Sn+1 be an immersed hypersurface without umbilical point, one can define the Mobius metric g on x which is invariant under the Mobius transformation group of Sn+1. The scalar curvature R with respect to g is called the MObius scalar curvature. In this paper, we study conformally flat hypersurfaces with constant Mains scalar curvature in Sn+1. First, we classify locally the conformally flat hypersurfaces of dimension n(>= 4) with constant Mobius scalar curvature under the Mobius transformation group of Sn+1. Second, we prove that if an umbilic-free conformally flat hypersurface of dimension n(>= 4) with constant Mobius scalar curvature R is compact, then R = (n - 1)(n - 2)r(2), 0 < r < 1, and the compact conformally flat hypersurface is Mobius equivalent to the torus S-1 (root 1 - r(2)) x Sn-1(r)hooked right arrow Sn+1. As an application, we obtain strong restrictions on the topology of a 3-manifold from the existence of non-smooth maxima of the volume function on the space of circle-valued angle structures.

Abstract:Let x : M-m --> S-n be a submanifold in the n-dimensional sphere S' without umbilics. Two basic invariants of x under the Mobius transformation group in S' are a I-form 0 called the Mobius form and a symmetric (0, 2) tensor A called the Blaschke tensor. x is said to be Mobius isotropic in S-n if Phi = 0 and A = lambdadx (.) dx for some smooth function lambda. An interesting property for a Mobius isotropic submanifold is that its conformal Gauss map is harmonic. The main result in this paper is the classification of Mobius isotropic submanifolds in S-n. We show that (i) if lambda > 0, then x is Mobius equivalent to a minimal submanifold with constant scalar curvature in S-n; (ii) if lambda = 0, then x is Mobius equivalent to the preimage of a stereographic projection of a minimal submanifold with constant scalar curvature in the n-dimensional Euclidean space R-n; (iii) if lambda < 0, then x is Mobius equivalent to the image of the standard conformal map tau : H-n --> S-+(n) of a minimal submanifold with constant scalar curvature in the n-dimensional hyperbolic space H-n. This result shows that one can use Mobius differential geometry to unify the three different classes of minimal submanifolds with constant scalar curvature in S-n, R-n and H-n.

Abstract:Let X be a compact complex manifold such that its canonical bundle is numerically trivial. Assume, additionally, that X is either Moishezon or X is Fujiki with dimension at most four. Using the MMP and classical results in foliation theory, we prove a Beauville–Bogomolov type decomposition theorem for X . We deduce that holomorphic geometric structures of affine type on X are in fact locally homogeneous away from an analytic subset of complex codimension at least two, and that they cannot be rigid unless X is an étale quotient of a compact complex torus. Moreover, we establish a characterization of torus quotients using the vanishing of the first two Chern classes which is valid for any compact complex n -folds of algebraic dimension at least . Finally, we show that a compact complex manifold with trivial canonical bundle bearing a rigid geometric structure must have infinite fundamental group if either X is Fujiki, or X is a threefold, or X is of algebraic dimension at most one.

Abstract:Let $x:{\bf M}^m\rightarrow {\bf S}^{m+1}$ be a hypersurface in the (m+1)-dimensional unit sphere S m+1 without umbilics. Four basic invariants of x under the Möbius transformation group in S m+1 are a Riemannian metric g called Möbius metric, a 1-form Φ called Möbius form, a symmetric (0,2) tensor A called Blaschke tensor and symmetric (0,2) tensor B called Möbius second fundamental form. In this paper, we prove the following classification theorem: let $x:{\bf M}^m\rightarrow {\bf S}^{m+1}$ be a hypersurface, which satisfies (i) Φ≡0, (ii) A+λg+μB≡0 for some functions λ and μ, then λ and μ must be constant, and x is Möbius equivalent to either (i) a hypersurface with constant mean curvature and scalar curvature in S m+1 ; or (ii) the pre-image of a stereographic projection of a hypersurface with constant mean curvature and scalar curvature in the Euclidean space R m+1 ; or (iii) the image of the standard conformal map of a hypersurface with constant mean curvature and scalar curvature in the (m+1)-dimensional hyperbolic space H m+1 . Abstract:It is shown that every non-compact hyperbolic manifold of finite volume has a finite cover admitting a geodesic ideal triangulation. Also, every hyperbolic manifold of finite volume with non-empty, totally geodesic boundary has a finite regular cover which has a geodesic partially truncated triangulation. The proofs use an extension of a result due to Long and Niblo concerning the separability of peripheral subgroups.

Abstract:In 1987 Brehm and Kühnel showed that any combinatorial -manifold with less than vertices is PL homeomorphic to the sphere and any combinatorial -manifold with exactly vertices is PL homeomorphic to either the sphere or a manifold like a projective plane in the sense of Eells and Kuiper. The latter possibility may occur for only. There exist a unique -vertex triangulation of , a unique -vertex triangulation of , and at least three -vertex triangulations of . However, until now, the question of whether there exists a -vertex triangulation of a manifold like the octonionic projective plane has remained open. We solve this problem by constructing a lot of examples of such triangulations. Namely, we construct vertex-transitive -vertex combinatorial -manifolds like the octonionic projective plane. Four of them have symmetry group of order , and the other have symmetry group of order . Further, we construct more than non-vertex-transitive -vertex combinatorial -manifolds like the octonionic projective plane. Most of them have trivial symmetry group, but there are also symmetry groups , , and . We conjecture that all the triangulations constructed are PL homeomorphic to the octonionic projective plane . Nevertheless, we have no proof of this fact so far.

Abstract:This survey paper contains an elementary exposition of Casson and Rivin's technique for finding the hyperbolic metric on a 3-manifold M with toroidal boundary. We also survey a number of applications of this technique. The method involves subdividing M into ideal tetrahedra and solving a system of gluing equations to find hyperbolic shapes for the tetrahedra. The gluing equations decompose into a linear and non-linear part. The solutions to the linear equations form a convex polytope A. The solution to the non-linear part (unique if it exists) is a critical point of a certain volume functional on this polytope. The main contribution of this paper is an elementary proof of Rivin's theorem that a critical point of the volume functional on A produces a complete hyperbolic structure on M.

Abstract:Let x : Mn→Sn+1 be a hypersurface in the (n+1)-dimensional unit sphere Sn+1 without umbilics. Two basis invariants of x under the Mobius transformation group of Sn+1 are the Mobius metric g and the Mobius second fundamental form B, which determine the hypersurface x up to a Mobius transformation if n≥3. In addition, the Mobius formΦis a important invariant. The assumptionΦ= 0 is necessary in some classification theorems. In this paper, we consider the n-dimensional hypersurfaces (n≥3) with vanishing Mobius formΦ. We classify the hypersurfaces with harmonic Mobius curvature tensor. Moreover, we classify all Einstein hypersurfaces and all hypersurfaces of constant sectional curvature with respect to Mobius metric.

We prove Schwartz's conjecture that < I-1, I-2, I-3 > is discrete and faithful if and only if I-1 I-3 I-2 I-3 is nonelliptic. If I-1 I-3 I-2 I-3 is parabolic, we show that the even subgroup < I-2 I-3, I2I1 > i is the holonomy representation of a uniformizable spherical CR structure on the two-cusped hyperbolic 3-manifold s782 in SnapPy notation.

Abstract:Let M be an n-dimensional submanifold in the simply connected space form F n+p (c) with c + H 2 > 0, where H is the mean curvature of M. We verify that if M n (n ≥ 3) is an oriented compact submanifold with parallel mean curvature and its Ricci curvature satisfies Ric M ≥ (n − 2)(c + H 2), then M is either a totally umbilic sphere, a Clifford hypersurface in an (n + 1)-sphere with n = even, or ${\mathbb{C}P^{2} \left(\frac{4}{3}(c + H^{2})\right) {\rm in} S^{7} \left(\frac{1}{\sqrt{c + H^{2}}}\right)}$. In particular, if Ric M > (n − 2)(c + H 2), then M is a totally umbilic sphere. We then prove that if M n (n ≥ 4) is a compact submanifold in F n+p (c) with c ≥ 0, and if Ric M > (n − 2)(c + H 2), then M is homeomorphic to a sphere. It should be emphasized that our pinching conditions above are sharp. Finally, we obtain a differentiable sphere theorem for submanifolds with positive Ricci curvature.

Abstract:We propose an approach to find constant curvature metrics on triangulated closed 3-manifolds using a finite dimensional variational method whose energy function is the volume. The concept of an angle structure on a tetrahedron and on a triangulated closed 3-manifold is introduced following the work of Casson, Murakami and Rivin. It is proved by A. Kitaev and the author that any closed 3-manifold has a triangulation supporting an angle structure. The moduli space of all angle structures on a triangulated 3-manifold is a bounded open convex polytope in a Euclidean space. The volume of an angle structure is defined. Both the angle structure and the volume are natural generalizations of tetrahedra in the constant sectional curvature spaces and their volume. It is shown that the volume functional can be extended continuously to the compact closure of the moduli space. In particular, the maximum point of the volume functional always exists in the compactification. The main result shows that for a 1-vertex triangulation of a closed 3-manifold if the volume function on the moduli space has a local maximum point, then either the manifold admits a constant curvature Riemannian metric or the manifold contains a non-separating 2-sphere or real projective plane.
Existence of conformal symplectic foliations on closed manifolds

Abstract:We study the existence of symplectic and conformal symplectic (codimension-1) foliations on closed manifolds of dimension . Our main theorem, based on a recent result by Bertelson–Meigniez, states that in dimension at least 7 any almost contact structure is homotopic to a conformal symplectic foliation. In dimension 5 we construct explicit conformal symplectic foliations on every closed, simply-connected, almost contact manifold, as well as honest symplectic foliations on a large subset of them. Lastly, via round-connected sums, we obtain, on closed manifolds, examples of conformal symplectic foliations which admit a linear deformation to contact structures.

Abstract:Let M-n be an immersed umbilic-free hypersurface in the (n + 1)-dimensional unit sphere Sn+1, then M-n is associated with a so-called Mobius metric g, a Mobius second fundamental form B and a Mobius form Phi which are invariants of M-n under the Mobius transformation group of Sn+1. A classical theorem of Mobius geometry states that M-n(n >= 3) is in fact characterized by g and B up to Mobius equivalence. A Mobius isoparametric hypersurface is defined by satisfying two conditions: (1) Phi 0; (2) All the eigenvalues of B with respect to g are constants. Note that Euclidean isoparametric hypersurfaces are automatically Mobius isoparametrics, whereas the latter are Dupin hypersurfaces. In this paper, we determine all Mobius isoparametric hypersurfaces in S-5 by proving the following classification theorem: If x : M -> S-5 is a Mobius isoparametric hypersurface, then x is Mobius equivalent to either (i) a hypersurface having parallel Mobius second fundamental form in S-5; or (ii) the pre-image of the stereographic projection of the cone in R-5 over the Cartan isoparametric hypersurface in S-4 with three distinct principal curvatures; or (iii) the Euclidean isoparametric hypersurface with four principal curvatures in S-5. The classification of hypersurfaces in Sn+1 (n >= 2) with parallel Mobius second fundamental form has been accomplished in our previous paper [7]. The present result is a counterpart of the classification for Dupin hypersurfaces in E 5 up to Lie equivalence obtained by R. Niebergall, T. Cecil and G. R. Jensen.

In this paper, we show that if Phi is identically zero and the Ricci curvature Ric(g) is pinched: (n - 1)(n - 2)/n(2) <= Ric(g) = (n(2) - 2n + 5)(n - 2)/[n(2)(n -1)], then it must be the case that n = 2p and M-n is Mobius equivalent to S-p(1/O2) x S-p(1/o2).
