Abstract:We prove that every closed, smooth $n$-manifold $X$ admits a Riemannian metric together with a smooth, transversely oriented CMC foliation if and only if its Euler characteristic is zero, where by CMC foliation we mean a codimension-one, transversely oriented foliation with leaves of constant mean curvature and where the value of the constant mean curvature can vary from leaf to leaf. Furthermore, we prove that this CMC foliation of $X$ can be chosen so that the constant values of the mean curvatures of its leaves change sign. We also prove a general structure theorem for any such non-minimal CMC foliation of $X$ that describes relationships between the geometry and topology of the leaves, including the property that there exist compact leaves for every attained value of the mean curvature.

Abstract:We show that the vanishing of the higher dimensional homology groups of a manifold ensures that every almost CR structure of codimension $k$ may be homotoped to a CR structure. This result is proved by adapting a method due to Haefliger used to study foliations (and previously applied to study the relation between almost complex and complex structures on manifolds) to the case of (almost) CR structures on open manifolds.

Abstract:An explicit classification of simply connected compact homogeneous CR manifolds G/L of codimension one, with non-degenerate Levi form, is given. There are three classes of such manifolds: a) the standard CR homogeneous manifolds which are homogeneous S^1-bundles over a flag manifold F, with CR structure induced by an invariant complex structure on F; b) the Morimoto-Nagano spaces, i.e. sphere bundles $S(N)\subset TN$ of a compact rank one symmetric space N = G/H, with the CR structure induced by the natural complex structure of $TN = G^\C/H^\C$; c) the following manifolds: $SU_n/T^1\cdot SU_{n-2}$, $SU_p\times SU_q/T^1 \cdot U_{p-2}\cdot U_{q-2}$, $SU_n/T^1\cdot SU_2\cdot SU_2\cdot SU_{n-4}$, $SO_{10}/T^1\cdot SO_6$, $E_6/T^1\cdot SO_8$; these manifolds admit canonical holomorphic fibrations over a flag manifold (F,J_F) with typical fiber S(S^k), where k = 2, 3, 5, 7 or 9, respectively; the CR structure is determined by the invariant complex structure J_F on F and by an invariant CR structure on the typical fiber, depending on one complex parameter.

On spherical CR uniformization of 3-manifolds

Abstract:We consider the discrete representations of 3-manifold groups into $PU(2,1)$ that appear in the Falbel-Koseleff-Rouillier census, such that the peripheral subgroups have cyclic unipotent holonomy. We show that two of these representations have conjugate images, even though they represent different 3-manifold groups. This illustrates the fact that a discrete representation $\pi_1(M)\rightarrow PU(2,1)$ with cyclic unipotent boundary holonomy is not in general the holonomy of a spherical CR uniformization of $M$.

Locally flat embeddings of 3-manifolds in $S^4$

Abstract:M. Freedman showed that every homology 3-sphere embeds as a locally flat submanifold of $S^4$. This is in striking contrast to the state of our knowledge of smooth embeddings of homology spheres. This book surveys what is presently known about the topic of its title, with emphasis on embeddings of Seifert fibred 3-manifolds and on distinguishing embeddings by properties of the complementary regions. In the final chapters 4-dimension surgery is used to study embeddings in which the complementary regions have abelian or nilpotent fundamental groups, and the final appendix contains a number of open questions. Work on smooth embeddings is only described briefly, as current techniques in this area are beyond the author's expertise.

A Combinatorial Invariant for Spherical CR Structures

Abstract:We study a cross-ratio of four generic points of $S^3$ which comes from spherical CR geometry. We construct a homomorphism from a certain group generated by generic configurations of four points in $S^3$ to the pre-Bloch group $\mathcal {P}(\C)$. If $M$ is a $3$-dimensional spherical CR manifold with a CR triangulation, by our homomorphism, we get a $\mathcal {P}(\C)$-valued invariant for $M$. We show that when applying to it the Bloch-Wigner function, it is zero. Under some conditions on $M$, we show the invariant lies in the Bloch group $\mathcal B(k)$, where $k$ is the field generated by the cross-ratio. For a CR triangulation of Whitehead link complement, we show its invariant is a non-trivial torsion in $\mathcal B(k)$.

Abstract:For later use in subsequent upcoming <a class="link-internal link-http" href="http://arxiv.org">arxiv.org</a> prepublications, basic foundational material on local, smooth or real analytic, CR-generic submanifolds of complex Euclidean spaces is developed from scratch, with strong emphasis on the interplay between extrinsic and intrinsic aspects, a constructive option that commands to perform computational syntheses in coordinates. Mainly, one finds a self-contained proof of the existence of precisely six general classes: I, II, III-1, III-2, IV-1, IV-2 of nondegenerate general CR manifolds up to dimension 5, class III-2 being unobserved untill now.

Abstract:We apply E. Cartan's method of equivalence to classify 7-dimensional, 2-nondegenerate CR manifolds $M$ up to local CR equivalence in the case that the cubic form of $M$ satisfies a certain symmetry property with respect to the Levi form of $M$. The solution to the equivalence problem is given by a parallelism on a principal bundle over $M$. When the nondegenerate part of the Levi form has definite signature, the parallelism takes values in $\mathfrak{su}(2,2)$. When this signature is split and an additional "isotropy-switching" hypothesis is satisfied, the parallelism takes values in $\mathfrak{su}(3,1)$. Differentiating the parallelism provides a complete set of local invariants of $M$. We exhibit an explicit example of a real hypersurface in $\mathbb{C}^4$ whose invariants are nontrivial.

Abstract:We investigate what kind of closed 3-manifolds can admit locally standard (Z(2))(3)-actions. In particular, we will prove that for a closed connected 3-manifold M with H-1 (M; Z(2)) = 0, M admits a locally standard (Z(2))(3)-action if and only if M is a connected sum of 8 copies of a Z(2)-homology sphere N. So if such an M is irreducible, it must be homeomorphic to S-3. Moreover, the argument can be extended to study orientable rational homology 3-spheres M with H-1 (M; Z(2)) congruent to Z(2) which admits locally standard (Z(2))(3)-actions. (C) 2013 Elsevier B.V. Abstract:Let X be a compact connected CR manifold in C-N. X is called a rational CR manifold if its geometric genus p(g)(X) is equal to zero. In this paper we classify all rational CR structures on a topological 5-sphere with transverse S-1-action in C-4 up to algebraic equivalence.In fact the main theorem of this paper gives a classification of all 3-dimensional isolated rational weighted homogeneous singularities with links homeomorphic to topological 5-sphere. These are the simplest kind of singularities in some sense.
On 3-manifolds with locally-standard (Z_2)^3-actions

Abstract:As a generalization of Davis-Januszkiewicz theory, there is an essential link between locally standard $(\Z_2)^n$-actions (or $T^n$-actions) actions and nice manifolds with corners, so that a class of nicely behaved equivariant cut-and-paste operations on locally standard actions can be carried out in step on nice manifolds with corners. Based upon this, we investigate what kinds of closed manifolds admit locally standard $(\Z_2)^n$-actions; especially for the 3-dimensional case. Suppose $M$ is an orientable closed connected 3-manifold. When $H_1(M;\Z_2)=0$, it is shown that $M$ admits a locally standard $(\Z_2)^3$-action if and only if $M$ is homeomorphic to a connected sum of 8 copies of some $\Z_2$-homology sphere $N$, and if further assuming $M$ is irreducible, then $M$ must be homeomorphic to $S^3$. In addition, the argument is extended to rational homology 3-sphere $M$ with $H_1(M;\Z_2) \cong \Z_2$ and an additional assumption that the $(\Z_2)^3$-action has a fixed point.

Abstract:The purpose of this paper is to organize some results on the local geometry of CR singular real-analytic manifolds that are images of CR manifolds via a CR map that is a diffeomorphism onto its image. We find a necessary (sufficient in dimension 2) condition for the diffeomorphism to extend to a finite holomorphic map. The multiplicity of this map is a biholomorphic invariant that is precisely the Moser invariant of the image when it is a Bishop surface with vanishing Bishop invariant. In higher dimensions, we study Levi-flat CR singular images and we prove that the set of CR singular points must be large, and in the case of codimension 2, necessarily Levi-flat or complex. We also show that there exist real-analytic CR functions on such images that satisfy the tangential CR conditions at the singular points, yet fail to extend to holomorphic functions in a neighborhood. We provide many examples to illustrate the phenomena that arise.

Abstract:We study an analog in CR-geometry of the conformal volume of Li-Yau. In particular, to submanifolds of odd-dimensional spheres that are Legendrian or, more generally, horizontal with respect to the sphere's standard CR-structure we associate a quantity that is invariant under the CR-automorphisms of the sphere. We apply this concept to a corresponding notion of Willmore energy.

Abstract:In this paper I have studied about CR(Cauchy-Riemann)-submanifolds of Lorentzian Concircular Structure manifold ((LCS)n-manifold), Lorentzian Para-Sasakian(LP)-cosymplectic manifold, S-manifold and Generalized Kenmotsu (GKM) manifold. I have discussed some results regarding distribution, structure vector field, totally geodesic submanifold, leaf etc.. I have obtained results on totally umbilical contact CR-submanifold where the anti-invariant distribution has some properties. Next, I have studied some results about D-totally geodesic CR-submanifold (D is the distribution), a contact CR-submanifold, D(perp)-totally geodesic CR-submanifold, xi-horizontal CR-submanifold where the distribution is integrable (here xi is the structure vector field). Also I have proved some results on D-umbilic CR-submanifold, mixed totally geodesic CR-submanifold, foliate xi-horizontal mixed totally geodesic CR-submanifold, leaf of the distribution, totally geodesic leaf, CR-product etc.. I have given an example of a CR-submanifold of an (LCS)n-manifold and at last, I have given an example of a GKM manifold.

Spherical objects in dimensions two and three

Abstract:This paper classifies spherical objects in various geometric settings in dimensions two and three, including both minimal and partial crepant resolutions of Kleinian singularities, as well as arbitrary flopping 3-fold contractions with only Gorenstein terminal singularities. The main result is much more general: in each such setting, we prove that all objects in the associated null category with no negative Ext groups are the image, under the action of an appropriate braid or pure braid group, of some object in the heart of a bounded t-structure. The corollary is that all objects which admit no negative Exts, and for which the self-Hom space is one dimensional, are the images of the simples. A variation on this argument goes further, and classifies all bounded t-structures. There are multiple geometric, topological and algebraic consequences, primarily to autoequivalences and stability conditions. Our main new technique also extends into representation theory, and we establish that in the derived category of a finite dimensional algebra which is silting discrete, every object with no negative Ext groups lies in the heart of a bounded t-structure. As a consequence, every semibrick complex can be completed to a simple minded collection.

Abstract:Abstract deformations of the CR structure of a compact strictly pseudoconvex hypersurface $M$ in $\mathbb{C}^2$ are encoded by complex functions on $M$. In sharp contrast with the higher dimensional case, the natural integrability condition for $3$-dimensional CR structures is vacuous, and generic deformations of a compact strictly pseudoconvex hypersurface $M\subseteq \mathbb{C}^2$ are not embeddable even in $\mathbb{C}^N$ for any $N$. A fundamental (and difficult) problem is to characterize when a complex function on $M \subseteq \mathbb{C}^2$ gives rise to an actual deformation of $M$ inside $\mathbb{C}^2$. In this paper we study the embeddability of families of deformations of a given embedded CR $3$-manifold, and the structure of the space of embeddable CR structures on $S^3$. We show that the space of embeddable deformations of the standard CR $3$-sphere is a Frechet submanifold of $C^{\infty}(S^3,\mathbb{C})$ near the origin. We establish a modified version of the Cheng-Lee slice theorem in which we are able to characterize precisely the embeddable deformations in the slice (in terms of spherical harmonics). We also introduce a canonical family of embeddable deformations and corresponding embeddings starting with any infinitesimally embeddable deformation of the unit sphere in $\mathbb{C}^2$.

Spherical CR uniformization of the magic 3-manifold

Abstract:We show the 3-manifold at infinity of the complex hyperbolic triangle group $\Delta_{3,\infty,\infty;\infty}$ is the three-cusped "magic" 3-manifold $6_1^3$. We also show the 3-manifold at infinity of the complex hyperbolic triangle group $\Delta_{3,4,\infty;\infty}$ is the two-cusped 3-manifold $m295$ in the Snappy Census, which is a 3-manifold obtained by Dehn filling on one cusp of $6_1^3$. In particular, hyperbolic 3-manifolds $6_1^3$ and $m295$ admit spherical CR uniformizations. These results support our conjecture that the 3-manifold at infinity of the complex hyperbolic triangle group $\Delta_{3,n,m;\infty}$ is the one-cusped hyperbolic 3-manifold from the "magic" $6_1^3$ via Dehn fillings with filling slopes $(n-2)$ and $(m-2)$ on the first two cusps of it.

Abstract:Active phenomena which involve force generation and motion play a key role in a number of phenomena in living cells such as cell motility, muscle contraction and the active transport of material and organelles. Here we discuss mechanical oscillations generated by active systems in cells. Examples are oscillatory regimes in muscles, the periodic beating of axonemal cilia and flagella and spontaneous oscillations of auditory hair cells which play a role in active amplification of weak sounds in hearing. As a prototype system for oscillation generation by proteins, we discuss a general mechanism by which many coupled active elements such as motor molecules can generate oscillations.
