Abstract:We show that for a smooth, closed 2-connected manifold $M$ of dimension $d \geq 6$, the topological mapping class group $\pi_0 \mathrm{Homeo}(M)$ is residually finite, in contrast to the situation for the smooth mapping class group $\pi_0 \mathrm{Diff}(M)$. Combined with a result of Sullivan, this implies that $\pi_0 \mathrm{Homeo}(M)$ is an arithmetic group. The proof uses embedding calculus, and is of independent interest: we show that the $T_k$-mapping class group, $\pi_0 T_k \mathrm{Diff}(M)$, is residually finite, for all $k \in \mathbb{N}$. The statement on the topological mapping class group is then deduced from the Weiss fibre sequence, convergence of the embedding calculus tower and smoothing theory.

What problem does this paper attempt to address?
### Problems the paper attempts to solve The paper "Residual Finiteness of Some Automorphism Groups of High - Dimensional Manifolds" mainly explores the properties of mapping class groups of high - dimensional manifolds under topological and smooth structures, especially whether they are residually finite. Specifically, the author attempts to solve the following problems: 1. **Residual finiteness of topological mapping class groups**: - For a smooth, closed, and 2 - connected manifold \(M\) (with dimension \(d\geq6\)), is its topological mapping class group \(\pi_0\text{Homeo}(M)\) residually finite? - The author proves that both \(\pi_0\text{Homeo}(M)\) and \(\pi_0\text{Homeo}^+(M)\) are residually finite groups. 2. **Properties of arithmetic groups**: - Combining Sullivan's results, if \(\pi_0\text{Homeo}(M)\) is residually finite, then it is also an arithmetic group. - The author further proves that both \(\pi_0\text{Homeo}(M)\) and \(\pi_0\text{Homeo}^+(M)\) are arithmetic groups. 3. **Reasons for the failure of smooth mapping class groups**: - What are the reasons for the failure of the residual finiteness of the smooth mapping class group \(\pi_0\text{Diff}(M)\)? - By studying embedding calculus and smooth theory, the author proves that the failure of the residual finiteness of \(\pi_0\text{Diff}(M)\) is entirely caused by exotic spheres. ### Main results - **Theorem A**: For a smooth, closed, and 2 - connected topological manifold \(M\) (with dimension \(d\geq6\)), its topological mapping class groups \(\pi_0\text{Homeo}(M)\) and \(\pi_0\text{Homeo}^+(M)\) are both residually finite groups. For a smooth, 2 - connected, and compact manifold \(W\) with boundary (with dimension \(d\geq5\)), its topological mapping class group \(\pi_0\text{Homeo}_\partial(W)\) on the boundary is also residually finite. - **Theorem B**: For a smooth, closed, and 2 - connected topological manifold \(M\) (with dimension \(d\geq6\)), its topological mapping class groups \(\pi_0\text{Homeo}(M)\) and \(\pi_0\text{Homeo}^+(M)\) are both arithmetic groups. - **Theorem C**: For a smooth, closed, and 2 - connected manifold \(M\) (with dimension \(d\geq6\)), fix an embedded \(d\)-dimensional disc \(D^d\subset M\), then: - \(\text{fr}(\pi_0\text{Diff}^+(M))\subseteq\text{Im}(\pi_0\text{Diff}_\partial(D^d)\to\pi_0\text{Diff}^+(M))\) - \(\text{fr}(\pi_0\text{Diff}(M))\subseteq\text{Im}(\pi_0\text{Diff}_\partial(D^d)\to\pi_0\text{Diff}(M))\) ### Proof overview - **Weiss fiber sequence**: Use the Weiss fiber sequence to transform the problem into studying the properties of self - embedding spaces. - **Embedding calculus**: Through embedding calculus, study the convergence of self - embedding spaces, thereby deducing the residual finiteness of topological mapping class groups. - **Smooth theory**: Use smooth theory to connect the properties of smooth mapping class groups with those of topological mapping class groups, and further prove the residual finiteness of topological mapping class groups.
