Spatial Humanities and Geo-computation for Social Sciences:Advances and Applications

Abstract:Humanities and Social Sciences ( HSS) are undergoing the transformation of spatialization and quantification. Geo-computation, with geoinformatics ( including RS: Remote Sensing;GIS: Geographical Information System;GNSS: Global Navigation Satellite System) , provides effective computational and spatialization methods and tools for HSS. Spatial Humanities and Geo-computation for Social Sciences ( SH&GSS) is a field coupling geo-computation, and geoinformatics, with HSS. This special issue accepted a set of contributions highlighting recent advances in methodologies and applications of SH&GSS, which are related to sentiment spatial analysis from social media data, emotional change spatial analysis from news data, spatial analysis of social media related to COVID-19, crime spatiotemporal analysis,"double evaluation"for Land Use/Land Cover (LUCC), Specially Protected Natural Areas (SPNA) analysis, editing behavior analysis of Volunteered Geographic Information (VGI), electricity consumption anomaly detection, First and Last Mile Problem ( FLMP ) of public transport, and spatial interaction network analysis for crude oil trade network. Based on these related researches, we aim to present an overview of SH&GSS, and propose some future research directions for SH&HSS.

Advances in Atmospheric Sciences

Abstract:The 28th General Assembly of the International Union of Geodesy and Geophysics (IUGG) will be held on 11-20 July 2023 in Berlin, Germany. The Chinese National Committee (CNC) for the International Association of Meteorology and Atmospheric Sciences (IAMAS) has invited leading Chinese scientists to review the progress and achievements in meteorology and atmospheric sciences in China since 2019, continuing its nearly 40 years tradition of submitting national reports to IUGG. The last four national reports were published as special issues in Advances in Atmospheric Sciences (AAS), the only associated journal of IAMAS, in 2007, 2012, and 2019, respectively. These special issues have received increasing global attention and are widely cited.

Abstract:Through the Earth's ~ 4.54 billion year history, icehouse climates have been relatively short-lived but have exerted a significant impact on the evolution of the habitable environment. These icehouse episodes, such as those that occurred in the Cryogenian, mid-Ediacaran, Late Ordovician, and Late Paleozoic, developed through the complex interaction of Earth System processes; however, there is still ongoing debate regarding the causes, processes, and consequences of these glaciations. To improve our understanding of the past history of icehouse climates and the responses of the Earth System, we present this new special issue entitled The Earth System during Icehouse Climate Modes: Contributions from Glacial Records in China. This special issue includes eighteen papers that focus on four major icehouse events: the Cryogenian Snowball Earth glaciations (Sturtian and Marinoan global glaciations), the Ediacaran glaciation, the Ordovician glaciation, and the late Paleozoic Ice Age. This collection of papers provide novel insights into glacial processes, marine environments, and chemical weathering through key intervals of Earth History. We anticipate that this special issue will attract wide interest across the geosciences field.

Abstract:Mathematical and numericalmodeling is amature yet vibrant research area in geotechnical engineering. Its advancement has been accelerated in recent years by many emerging computational techniques aswell as the increasing availability of computational power. A wide spectrum of approaches, on the basis of continuously advancing understanding of soil behavior, has been developed and applied to solve various problems in geotechnical engineering. These methods are increasingly playing important roles not only in achieving better understanding of fundamental behavior of geomaterials and geostructures but also in ensuring the safety and sustainability of large-scale complex geoengineering projects. The aim of this special issue is to present original research articles on mathematical and numerical modeling in geotechnical engineering. A total of 26 high-quality peerreviewed papers were selected to be published in this special issue. The topics cover various aspects as follows.

Abstract:During May 12–14, 2018, the International Conference for the Decade Memory of the Wenchuan Earthquake, in connection to the 4th International Conference on Continental Earthquakes (4th ICCE) and the 12th General Assembly of the Asian Seismological Commission (ASC), was held in Chengdu, China. There have been several outcomes of the Conference (for example, the book published jointly by Higher Education Press and Springer) as well as the present special issue. Among the 58 submissions, 34 have been accepted after peer review. Some of the papers came from the presentations during the Conference, but with additional submissions, the scope of this special issue is far beyond that of the proceedings of the meeting.

Abstract:The convergence of big data and geospatial computing has brought challenges and opportunities to GIScience with regards to geospatial data management, processing, analysis, modeling, and visualization. This special issue highlights recent advancements in integrating new computing approaches, spatial methods, and data management strategies to tackle geospatial big data challenges and meanwhile demonstrates the opportunities for using big data for geospatial applications. Crucial to the advancements highlighted here is the integration of computational thinking and spatial thinking and the transformation of abstract ideas and models to concrete data structures and algorithms. This editorial first introduces the background and motivation of this special issue followed by an overview of the ten included articles. Conclusion and future research directions are provided in the last section.

Mathematical Methods of Geography: from Quantitative Analysis to GeoComputation

Abstract:This paper is devoted to reconsidering the past, present, and future of geography. General geography consists of mathematical geography and statistical geography. The former corresponds to geography while the latter to geography in a sense. Where narrow sense is concerned, quantitative was concluded as early as 1960s; but where broad sense is concerned, theoretical of geography is pending. The mathematics applied to geographical research has two functions: One is to be employed as a tool of sorting out the data; the other is to constitute assumptions and then build models for developing theories. The latter is much more important than the former, and a mathematical model itself is much more significant than the insights from data. The introduction of post-modern mathematics of chaos and fractals, together with bionic mathematical series such as cellular automata, neural nets, genetic algorithms, and even artificial life, etc., has marked an epoch in methods of geography. The classical geography and burgeoning geo-computation (GC) have reached the same goal by different routes, and GC can be regarded as a continual revolution of GIS and geography.

Abstract:The Tibetan Plateau is known as the Third Pole of the Earth, playing unique roles in plate tectonics, glaciology, limnology, hydrology, climate, and environmental changes. Like major scientific hotspots elsewhere in the world, long-term geophysical data are needed for in-depth scientific studies. The Tibetan Plateau has very sparse and inadequate in situ data sets publicly available. However, large amount of satellite data have become available during the last few decades. Such data allow researchers to detect long-term evolutions of geophysical signals and to enable more accurate modeling of their mechanisms. These data, in combination with the limited available seismic/magnetic profiles and other in situ data, are poised to potentially be able to extract previously missing features vital to the interpretation of a targeted geophysical process.

Abstract:This special issue has been prepared for the 8th International Eclogite Conference (IEC) to be held in the Qilian–Qaidam regions, western China during August, 2009. Most papers in this issue summarize results of many current petrological–geochemical–geochronological and tectonic studies of both Qilian Pacific-type and Qaidam Alpine-type lithotectonic assemblages. Important new occurrences include the Qilian lawsonite eclogites which required an extremely cold subduction of the Early Paleozoic oceanic lithosphere, and the mixing of oceanic and supracrustal protoliths in the Qaidam continental subduction channel. These two Early Paleozoic sutures in northern Tibet provide additional constraints on the regional tectonic evolution of Paleo- and Neo-Tethys in south-central Asia.
