Abstract:Hyperspectral imaging (HSI) has emerged as a promising, advanced technology in remote sensing and has demonstrated great potential in the exploitation of a wide variety of data. In particular, its capability has expanded from unmixing data samples and detecting targets at the subpixel scale to finding endmembers, which generally cannot be resolved by multispectral imaging. Accordingly, a wealth of new HSI research has been conducted and reported in the literature in recent years. The aim of this Special Issue “Advances in Hyperspectral Data Exploitation“ is to provide a forum for scholars and researchers to publish and share their research ideas and findings to facilitate the utility of hyperspectral imaging in data exploitation and other applications. With this in mind, this Special Issue accepted and published 19 papers in various areas, which can be organized into 9 categories, including I: Hyperspectral Image Classification, II: Hyperspectral Target Detection, III: Hyperspectral and Multispectral Fusion, IV: Mid-wave Infrared Hyperspectral Imaging, V: Hyperspectral Unmixing, VI: Hyperspectral Sensor Hardware Design, VII: Hyperspectral Reconstruction, VIII: Hyperspectral Visualization, and IX: Applications.

Abstract:Two closely related series of efforts have been organized in the past three years, towards a promotion of Sino-foreigninterchange on interdisciplinary areas of intelligence science, information science, and intelligent data engineering, and also in memory of thirty year anniversary of the Zhongguancun Golden Triangle ISIS Forum founded and propelled by the late senior academicians Prof. T. Chang of Tsinghua University and his collaborator, Prof. M. T. Cheng of Peking University, see the second paragraph of Ref. [1]. One is a serial annual workshops on Intelligence Science and Intelligent Data Engineering (IScIDE) as a collective venue for introducing world frontier researchers to China and for introducing researchers from Chinese major universities and research institutions to international communities. Already, IScIDE2010 and IScIDE2011 were held on June 3–5, 2010 in Harbin and on October 23–25, 2011 in Xi’an, respectively. In addition to having keynote speakers, oral and posters presentations as typically in standard international conferences, one salient feature of the workshops is a single track of oral sessions, which consists of not only strictly selected oral presentations and poster-spotlights but also particularly arranged invited talks by core researchers from Chinese top universities and by their corresponding foreign researchers. For IScIDE2010 and IScIDE2011, there have been in total such invited presentations with 18 from mainland and 15 outside mainland. Another series of efforts were originally scheduled to publish three special issues on Frontiers of Electrical and Electronic Engineering in China. The first one is named Emerging themes on information theory and Bayesian approach (Vol. 5, No. 3, 2010, shortly V5N3) which consists of nine invited papers from international well-known research pioneers and Chinese senior scientists. The other two special issues come from speakers of IScIDE2010, namely, Machine learning and intelligence science: Sino-foreign-interchange workshop IScIDE2010 (A) (Vol. 6, No. 1, 2011, shortly V6N1) and IScIDE2010 (B) (Vol. 6, No. 2, 2011, shortly V6N2). V6N1 consists of 14 invited papers, roughly with a half from top universities in mainland China and the other half from universities outside of mainland China. V6N2 consists of 19 papers, with a majority coming from major universities in China and the first authors of all these papers are Ph.D candidates, which provides a typical window for international communities to observe the researches by Ph.D candidates in China. After publication of the above three special issues, there were feedbacks that the coverage of V6N1 missed some representative professors and some top universities in mainland China, and a supplementary issue is expected. Thus, we schedule this special issue as a continuation of V6N1, which is named IScIDE (C) since the invited authors mostly come from the invited speakers of IScIDE2010 and IScIDE2011. Keeping the V6N1 style, it is scheduled as the first issue of a year (Vol. 7, No. 1, 2012, shortly V7N1) and the first author of each paper is invited. Originally, authors of 18 papers have accepted invitation. However, from initialization to publication, there had been less than a half year for a schedule of review, revision, and production. Unfortunately, five papers (though three in manuscript revision already) could not reach the editorial office before the final deadline of production. We are sorry about such a rigid time schedule and express our thanks to the efforts made by these authors. Abstract:In 2012, the Workshop on Hyperspectral Image and Signal Processing: Evolution in Remote Sensing (WHISPERS), sponsored by IEEE Geoscience and Remote Sensing Society, moved to Shanghai, China. There were 91 oral presentations and 31 posters. Three plenary speakers: Professor Qingxi Tong from Peking University, China, Professor Jean-Pierre Bibring from University of Paris, France, and Professor Susan Ustin from University of California, Davis, USA, introduced their cutting-edge research in this field. Following the success of this fourth WHISPERS edition, it is our great pleasure to introduce this special issue in order to present the most recent developments. A large number of submissions were received, and 29 papers have been accepted after rigorous review. A few of the submissions will be published in the following issues of JSTARS, after the final reviews and revisions are completed. In the remainder of this Foreword, we briefly introduce these 29 accepted papers, which cover several important topics. In particular, 9 of these 29 papers are related to hyperspectral remote sensing applications, which well fit the scope of the IEEE Journal of Selected Topics in Applied Earth Observations and Remote Sensing (JSTARS).

Abstract:The past decades have witnessed enormous changes in China on economic, social, and cultural aspects, which have brought far-reaching impacts on global business and technology development. Since the early 1990s, IT has been transforming Chinese business and society, but the country still faces formidable challenges in developing and using the technology to further modernize itself. IT applications in China were introduced relatively late in technology evolution compared to those in the developed countries, forcing business managers to contend with a lack of experience, know-how, and infrastructure. On the other hand, this late start has also meant that Chinese companies could be able to choose from more advanced technologies, learn from the experience of others, and be less bothered by the problems associated with legacy systems. Along with the development of IT/IS application and management, information systems research in China has also been accelerating and fusing with global academic streams. Notably, research efforts on both managerial and technical perspectives are flourishing in recent years. In 2005, the China Association for Information Systems (CNAIS) was established as a chapter of AIS serving China, aimed at promoting the exchange of ideas, experiences, and knowledge among scholars and professionals engaged in the development, management, and use of information systems and technology. With the support of CNAIS, this series of special issue papers presents some recent progress in IS research from Chinese scholars. The papers included in this special issue series, which spans volume 40(1) and 40(2), presents extended versions of work selected, via a standard review process, from the 2007 CNAIS Congress (CNAIS2007) held in November 8-10, 2007, in Kunming, China. CNAIS2007 accepted over 170 refereed papers and featured plenary talks by distinguished scholars such as Michael Myers from the University of Auckland and Dennis Galletta from the University of Pittsburgh. Among the papers selected for this special issue series, four them focus on the management aspect of information systems while three concentrate on technical research, giving rise to two natural groups, respectively. As the guest editors of this special issue series, we would like to thank all the authors for the contributions and all referees for their kind cooperation and help. We heartily thank Professor Patrick Y.K. Chau, Global Co-Editor of The DATA BASE for Advances in Information Systems, for providing us with the opportunity to edit and publish this issue, as well as for his valuable guidance in the editorial process.

Abstract:Special issues are a unique mode of scholarly communication designed to highlight essential or emerging research themes through high-quality manuscripts. Special issues are increasingly becoming a fixture across a wide range of disciplines. Yet whether publishing special issues is necessarily a beneficial practice remains controversial. In this paper, we explore whether the actual effect of special issues meets the academic community's expectations, which is to enhance citation impact and highlight important research topics. Our sample, which comprises all special issue articles in all disciplines published between 2008 and 2017, reveals that there has been a proliferation of special issues across countries, institutions, and journals, with some differences among the disciplines. Opportunities to appear in special issues are more given to countries/institutions that achieved the highest overall research output. The effectiveness of special issues in promoting academic development varies across disciplines and even across journals. Honing in on library and information science as a case area to explore citation impacts and the topic distribution of special issues, we find that many special issues present high-impact manuscripts, especially those of the less prominent journals. However, the issue of publishing low impact manuscripts through special issues also exists in many fields. Special issues are also more likely to publish interdisciplinary or cross-disciplinary articles and rarely discussed research themes compared to regular issues. Further, such topics are seldom explored on a large scale in the normal editions of the journal. To ensure the quality of the manuscripts, we recommend optimizing the procedures for selecting special issue topics and reviewing submissions.
