Abstract:In 2012, the Workshop on Hyperspectral Image and Signal Processing: Evolution in Remote Sensing (WHISPERS), sponsored by IEEE Geoscience and Remote Sensing Society, moved to Shanghai, China. There were 91 oral presentations and 31 posters. Three plenary speakers: Professor Qingxi Tong from Peking University, China, Professor Jean-Pierre Bibring from University of Paris, France, and Professor Susan Ustin from University of California, Davis, USA, introduced their cutting-edge research in this field. Following the success of this fourth WHISPERS edition, it is our great pleasure to introduce this special issue in order to present the most recent developments. A large number of submissions were received, and 29 papers have been accepted after rigorous review. A few of the submissions will be published in the following issues of JSTARS, after the final reviews and revisions are completed. In the remainder of this Foreword, we briefly introduce these 29 accepted papers, which cover several important topics. In particular, 9 of these 29 papers are related to hyperspectral remote sensing applications, which well fit the scope of the IEEE Journal of Selected Topics in Applied Earth Observations and Remote Sensing (JSTARS).

Abstract:Abstract. The ISPRS Technical Commission I Midterm Symposium on "Intelligent Sensing and Remote Sensing Application" was held in Changsha, China, during May 13–17, 2024, aiming to provide a platform to share the latest researches, advanced technologies and application experience, to discuss the future development and to seek international cooperation in various forms. The Symposium has received 229 full paper and abstract s, among them 45 double-blind peer-reviewed full papers were published in ISPRS Annals of the Photogrammetry, Remote Sensing and Spatial Information, and 165 papers accepted through abstract review were published in the International Archives of the Photogrammetry, Remote Sensing and Spatial Information Sciences. These papers are mostly dedicated to topics of the 8 TC I Working Groups, 3 Inter-commission Working Groups, including Satellite Missions and Constellations for Remote Sensing, Mobile Mapping Technology, Multispectral, Hyperspectral and Thermal Sensors, LiDAR, Laser Altimetry and Sensor Integration, Microwave and InSAR Technology for Earth Observation, Orientation, Calibration and Validation of Sensors, Data Quality and Benchmark of Sensors, Multi-sensor Modelling and Cross-modality Fusion, Robotics for Mapping and Machine Intelligence, Autonomous Sensing Systems and their Applications, Digital Construction: Reality Capture, Automated Inspection and Integration to BIM, Point Cloud Generation and Processing, Artificial Intelligence Technology Related to Sensor Systems, Multi-sensor Remote Sensing Applications.. These papers presented the latest trends of sensor systems. The full papers and abstracts were reviewed by the members of the Symposium Scientific Committee comprised of Working Group officers and invited experts. Abstract:Hyperspectral imaging (HSI) has emerged as a promising, advanced technology in remote sensing and has demonstrated great potential in the exploitation of a wide variety of data. In particular, its capability has expanded from unmixing data samples and detecting targets at the subpixel scale to finding endmembers, which generally cannot be resolved by multispectral imaging. Accordingly, a wealth of new HSI research has been conducted and reported in the literature in recent years. The aim of this Special Issue “Advances in Hyperspectral Data Exploitation“ is to provide a forum for scholars and researchers to publish and share their research ideas and findings to facilitate the utility of hyperspectral imaging in data exploitation and other applications. Also, water systems in general are of vital importance to life on Earth and commerce. For these reasons, there is significant interest in monitoring aquatic environments for scientific, environmental, commercial, safety, and military purposes. WUWNet is the premier venue for research and development bringing real-time, in-situ sensing and actuation to this aquatic world. The goal of this conference is to bring together researchers and practitioners in areas relevant to underwater networks and systems.

Abstract:In line with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 6, the main goal of the Special Issue on "Remote sensing for water resources and environmental management" was to solicit papers from a diverse range of scientists around the world on the use of cutting-edge remote sensing technologies to assess and monitor freshwater quality, quantity, availability, and management to ensure water security. Special consideration was given to scientific manuscripts that covered, but were not limited to, the development of geospatial techniques and remote sensing applications for detecting, quantifying, and monitoring freshwater water resources, identifying potential threats to water resources and agriculture, as well as other themes related to water resources and environmental management at various spatial scales. The Special Issue attracted over thirteen peer-reviewed scientific articles, with the majority of manuscripts originating from China. Most of the studies made use of satellite datasets, ranging from coarse spatial resolution data, such as the Gravity Recovery and Climate Experiment (GRACE) and GRACE Follow-On (GRACE-FO), to medium spatial resolution data, such as the Landsat series, ERA5, Modern-Era Retrospective Analysis for Research and Application Land version 2 reanalysis product (MERRA2), CLSM and NOAH ET, and MODIS (Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer). Google Earth Engine (GEE) data, together with big data processing techniques, such as the remote sensing-based energy balance model (ALEXI/DisALEXI approach) and the STARFM data fusion technique, were used for analyzing geospatial datasets. Overall, this Special Issue demonstrated significant knowledge gaps in various big data image processing techniques and improved computing processes in assessing and monitoring water resources and the environment at various spatial and temporal scales.

Abstract:This special issue follows the one in June 2008 and is related to the very successful series of the Joint Urban Remote Sensing Events, held every two years since 2005. Remote sensing of urban areas is at the moment facing a rapid development, due to the increasing amount of High Resolution (UR) and Very High Resolution VHR (VHR) data in both the optical/IR and microwave regions of the electromagnetic spectrum. On a global scale, human settlements have always been the focus of interest, but only in these days there starts to be an interest in mapping and monitoring even small and informal ones by satellites. Coherently, urban area mapping is moving from basic land cover to more complex land use maps, and human settlement environmental monitoring is committed to a more and more integrated use of remote sensing and in situ data. By presenting excellent papers on these subjects, this special issue tries and provides an overview of the state-of-the-art in this interesting field of applied earth observation and remote sensing.

Abstract:The 4th Atlas Georesources International Congress (AGIC), convened in Hammamet, Tunisia in March 2023, provided a significant forum for scholars, scientists, and practitioners to converge and deliberate on the intricate challenges surrounding resource management. Themed "Geoscience Innovations For Resource Management: Socio-Economic Challenges In An Environmentally Constrained World," the congress spotlighted five pivotal domains: hydrology and water resource management, applied geophysics in geological exploration and structural analysis, environmental pollution, climate and atmospheric studies, and renewable energy and climate modeling. These thematic areas serve as focal points for grappling with the multifaceted challenges posed by contemporary resource management paradigms.

Abstract:<p>To embrace the burgeoning land change science studies that exploit public-domain cloud-computing platforms such as Google Earth Engine (GEE), for the first time, we organized a special issue entitled "Remote Sensing of Land Change Science with Google Earth Engine" in the journal "Remote Sensing of Environment". This paper serves as a summary to a collection of 19 papers that have been published since the inception of the special issue in November 2017. In particular, we summarized their contributions with regard to two perspectives: what new themes of questions are articulated, what contributions have been made. Taking account of the disciplinary difference, we carried out the summary separately in two major science domains: Remote Sensing of Environment (RSE), i.e., naturally-induced land change, and Remote Sensing of Society (RSS), i.e., human-induced land change. Furthermore, we presented a historical review of the developments of GEE-relevant studies published before our special issue. Finally, we provided a future prospect on how GEE will continue to evolve to further the study of land change science.</p>

Abstract:We are pleased to present a special issue of Data Science and Engineering (DSE), which contains a collection of four extended papers from the APWeb-WAIM 2019 conference.Besides these four special issue papers, this DSE issue also has one survey paper and one regular research paper.APWeb-WAIM conferences focus on research, development, and applications in relation to Web information management, including a wide range of topics, such as text analysis, graph data processing, social networks, recommender systems, information retrieval, data streams, knowledge graph, data mining and application, query processing, machine learning, database and Web applications, big data, and blockchain.APWeb-WAIM 2019 was held in Chengdu during August 1-3, 2019, and attracted a total of 180 research paper submissions.The conference program committee selected 42 full research papers, 17 short papers, and 6 demonstration papers to be presented at the conference and published in the conference proceedings [1,2].

Abstract:Humanities and Social Sciences ( HSS) are undergoing the transformation of spatialization and quantification. Geo-computation, with geoinformatics ( including RS: Remote Sensing;GIS: Geographical Information System;GNSS: Global Navigation Satellite System) , provides effective computational and spatialization methods and tools for HSS. Spatial Humanities and Geo-computation for Social Sciences ( SH&GSS) is a field coupling geo-computation, and geoinformatics, with HSS. This special issue accepted a set of contributions highlighting recent advances in methodologies and applications of SH&GSS, which are related to sentiment spatial analysis from social media data, emotional change spatial analysis from news data, spatial analysis of social media related to COVID-19, crime spatiotemporal analysis,"double evaluation"for Land Use/Land Cover (LUCC), Specially Protected Natural Areas (SPNA) analysis, editing behavior analysis of Volunteered Geographic Information (VGI), electricity consumption anomaly detection, First and Last Mile Problem ( FLMP ) of public transport, and spatial interaction network analysis for crude oil trade network. Based on these related researches, we aim to present an overview of SH&GSS, and propose some future research directions for SH&HSS.
