Abstract:EditorsThis January 2018 issue of the IEEE Transactions on Visualization and Computer Graphics contains the proceedings of IEEE VIS 2017, held during 1-6 October 2017. In 2017, IEEE VIS returns to the city of Phoenix, AZ, USA, for the conference's 28th year. The conference will be held at the Hyatt Regency Phoenix hotel. VIS consists of three conferences, held concurrently: the IEEE Visual Analytics Science and Technology Conference (VAST 2017), the IEEE Information Visualization Conference (InfoVis 2017), and the IEEE Scientific Visualization Conference (SciVis 2017). Information on the paper review process is provided along with an overview of each conference.

Abstract:Welcome to the proceedings of the Pacific Visualization Symposium 2015 (PacificVis 2015), eighth in a series of successful events that have been sponsored by the IEEE Computer Society Visualization and Graphics Technical Committee (VGTC). Past PacificVis symposia were held in Kyoto (2008), Beijing (2009), Taipei (2010), Hong Kong (2011), Songdo (2012), Sydney (2013), and Yokohama (2014). This year, PacificVis is held in China, organized by Zhejiang University, and held at Zijingang Campus, Zhejiang University, Hangzhou, China, from April 14th to 17th, 2015.

Abstract:Geospatial analysis is crucial for addressing many of the world's most pressing challenges. Given this, there is immense value in improving and expanding the visualization techniques used to communicate geospatial data. In this work, we explore this important intersection -- between geospatial analytics and visualization -- by examining a set of recent IEEE VIS Conference papers (a selection from 2017-2019) to assess the inclusion of geospatial data and geospatial analyses within these papers. After removing the papers with no geospatial data, we organize the remaining literature into geospatial data domain categories and provide insight into how these categories relate to VIS Conference paper types. We also contextualize our results by investigating the use of geospatial terms in IEEE Visualization publications over the last 30 years. Our work provides an understanding of the quantity and role of geospatial subject matter in recent IEEE VIS publications and supplies a foundation for future meta-analytical work around geospatial analytics and geovisualization that may shed light on opportunities for innovation.

VINCI 2010 provides an international forum for researchers and industrial practitioners to discuss the state of the art in visual communication theories, designs, and applications. It brings together researchers and practitioners from many areas, including information visualization, human-computer interaction, CSCW, etc. The call for papers attracted 37 papers from more than 8 countries and regions. The program committee accepted 18 papers after a thorough review process. These papers cover a wide range of topics, including visual analytics, scientific visualization, document and knowledge visualization, parallel coordinates and graph, new concept and framework, etc.

Abstract:Hyperspectral imaging (HSI) has emerged as a promising, advanced technology in remote sensing and has demonstrated great potential in the exploitation of a wide variety of data. In particular, its capability has expanded from unmixing data samples and detecting targets at the subpixel scale to finding endmembers, which generally cannot be resolved by multispectral imaging. Accordingly, a wealth of new HSI research has been conducted and reported in the literature in recent years. The aim of this Special Issue “Advances in Hyperspectral Data Exploitation“ is to provide a forum for scholars and researchers to publish and share their research ideas and findings to facilitate the utility of hyperspectral imaging in data exploitation and other applications. VisImages: a Corpus of Visualizations in the Images of Visualization Publications

Abstract:Images in visualization publications contain rich information, e.g., novel visualization designs and common combinations of visualizations. A systematic collection of these images can contribute to the community in many aspects, such as literature analysis and automated tasks for visualization. In this paper, we build and make public a dataset, VisImages, which collects 12,267 images with captions from 1,397 papers in IEEE InfoVis and VAST. Based on a refined taxonomy for visualizations in publications, the dataset includes 35,096 annotated visualizations, as well as their positions. We demonstrate the usefulness of VisImages through three use cases: 1) exploring and analyzing the evolution of visualizations with VisImages Explorer, 2) training and benchmarking models for visualization classification, and 3) localizing and recognizing visualizations in the images automatically.
