Abstract:The overall objective of this IEEE Power Electronics Society (PELS) Special Issue on high-frequency-link power-conversion systems is, therefore, to bring out the highlights of the ongoing world-wide activities in this area of advanced research to expose, analyze, and resolve the critical research and developmental challenges. The Special Issue received a total of 132 manuscripts for review considerations of which 35 manuscripts have been accepted for final publication. These publications encompass all four broad categories of high-frequency-link power-conversion systems (i.e., dc/ac, ac/dc, ac/ac, and dc/dc converters) with broad applicability in the following areas of application: photovoltaic energy, wind energy, electric vehicles, fuel-cell energy, energy storage, uninterruptible power systems, motor drives, high-frequency-ac power distribution systems, high-voltage direct- current transmission, active load emulator, smart/micro grid, solid-state transformers, induction heating, railway traction drive, pulsed power, plug-in hybrid-electric-vehicle, battery charging, inductive power transfer. The contributions of the articles compiled in this special issue are multifold encompassing topologies with plurality of stages and/or levels, modulation, loss-mitigating switching, high-frequency magnetics, control, modeling, switched-capacitor power conversion, power-factor correction, and broad overview of the Special-Issue subject area.

Abstract:The 8th Asian Symposium on Computational Heat Transfer and Fluid Flow (ASCHT2021), as a continuation of the series initiated in 2007, was held in Qingdao, China, from September 23rd to 26th, 2021. This conference has become an essential platform for exchanging new ideas and creating knowledge about the latest advances in theories, analyses, and applications of computational methods involving scientists and engineers from Asia and other regions. Of the 346 papers submitted to ASCHT2021, 277 papers were chosen for the proceedings. Subsequently, 20 of these papers were meticulously selected for publication in this Special issue after an extensive additional peer review process by renowned international experts. The selection for the Special Issue aimed to ensure the high quality of contributions anticipated to impact future research and development significantly. All papers presented in ASCHT2021 contributed high-quality content, fostering significant discussions among participants, which is expected to enhance the quality of future submissions for upcoming events.

Frontiers of Energy and Power Engineering in China

Abstract:Energy and associated environmental problems are now the central focus of mankind. These problems are extremely serious and urgent, because global climate change will not wait for a long time. The problems should be solved in a limited time-frame of less than 50 years. Human-induced climate change could overshadow all our efforts to cure diseases, reduce poverty, prevent warfare and preserve biodiversity. China, because of its huge population, energy consumption and related environmental pollution have a significant share in global climate change. Furthermore, the percentage of coal, as the most important primary energy in China, will remain more than 60% in the coming 40-50 years. Under this situation, innovative technology, new strategic ideas and new approaches are the key for solving the energy/environment problem in the country. There are no existing examples in the world for copying, therefore, China should take the unavoidable responsibility, and in some sense, to lead the sustainable (or so called “Low Carbon”) energy systems world wide. “Frontiers of Energy and Power Engineering in China” at present is the only English-language academic journal dedicated to energy in China. Our ambition is to develop this journal into a unique platform for reporting the most advanced research on energy science and strategic thinking in the country. Obviously, energy/environment problems could be solved only with system approaches, so the scope of the journal is broadened in comparison with “traditional” frontiers. It covers energy fundamental science, energy technology (power generation, renewables, transport, building energy conservation and integration of different energy systems), energy and environment (pollution control, energy efficiency in narrow and comprehensive sense, climate change, carbon capture, utilization and storage CCS), and energy economics and policy. Since the publication of the first issue of “Frontiers of Energy and Power Engineering in China” two years ago, the journal has been warmly met by domestic and international readers. In order to raise the academic level of the journal, we have invited more famous international scholars and experts to join the editorial board, and decided to shift from selected published articles to original submission in English. We heartily hope our journal will be a new nexus for information exchange in the fields of energy and power engineering.

Abstract:Three billion people around the world live in severe energy poverty, including 1.1 billion who live completely off-grid. Providing affordable energy access to them can dramatically impact their living standard, health, education, productivity, and ability to be a part of modern society. In developing economies, the utilization of energy is also limited to some extent. Many programs and initiatives (e.g., the IEEE Empower a Billion Lives and the IEEE Smart Village) have been doing stellar work in tackling energy poverty in developing economies. However, much remains to be done to crowdsource relevant innovation to accelerate the deployment of energy access solutions in the affected areas, including the developing economies. According to the previous programs and initiatives, it has been identified that power electronics is one of the key technologies to address real-life issues in energy access and utilization, water supply, rural transportation, etc., for developing economies. In this context, it calls for innovative and scalable solutions that should be for emerging applications of power electronics with an emphasis on technical innovation and business viability to rapidly and sustainably scale to a wide range of customers in developing economies. Hence, we organized this Special Issue on <italic xmlns:mml="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" xmlns:xlink="http://www.w3.org/1999/xlink">Emerging Applications of Power Electronics in Developing Economies</i> , aiming to bring together researchers, experts, policy makers, and stakeholders to tackle energy poverty issues in developing economies.

Abstract:This editorial summarizes the papers selected for publication in the Special Issue on Climate Change Mitigation and Adaptation in Power and Energy Systems (CMAP). After a rigorous review of 86 submitted manuscripts, 23 papers were accepted for publication. These accepted papers cover various aspects of climate change mitigation and adaptation and are classified as follows: boosting renewable energy efficiency (two papers), climate resilience strategies (four papers), decarbonization strategies (four papers), renewable energy integration (five papers), policies, incentives, and science communications (four papers), and the role of energy markets (four papers). Abstract:The power system worldwide is currently undergoing a rapid and transformative shift driven by decarbonization and digitization. The global goal of decarbonization in response to climate change has driven the evolution of smart grids toward high, or even 100%, renewable penetration. Meanwhile, traditional electricity consumers are transforming into prosumers who simultaneously consume and produce electricity. More flexible resource types continue to emerge and rise on the demand side. They have emerged as highly effective solutions to integrate and coordinate a diverse range of distributed energy resources that offer increased resilience, flexibility, and sustainability during the decarbonization of power systems.

Abstract:This special issue of Applied Energy contains articles developed from initial ideas related to the 17th Conference Process Integration, Modelling and Optimisation for Energy Saving and Pollution Reduction (PRES 2014) held in Prague, Czech Republic, during 23–27 August 2014. The conference has been organised jointly with CHISA 2014. Both events have benefitted from the shared pool of participants as well as the expanded opportunities for exchanging ideas. From all contributions presented at the conference, high-quality ones suitable for Applied Energy, have been invited. Overall, 37 extended manuscripts have been invited as candidate articles. Of those, after a thorough review procedure, 11 articles have been selected to be published. Abstract:C ITIES and urban regions are becoming smarter thanks to the recent developments of digital technologies, smart control, data analytics, and optimization concepts. A smart city is equipped with different electronic elements employed by several applications. The utilization of the aforementioned technologies and approaches can furnish intelligent management of energy distribution and consumption in heterogeneous circumstances. Intelligent nodes have some abilities, such as sensing and networking, which raise the possibility of optimal scheduling of energy suppliers. Digitalization can result in the generation of some services that have an interaction with the environment. Hence, it could introduce some opportunities for contextualization and geoawareness. Furthermore, collective intelligence will improve the processes of decision making and empower the citizens. One of the main features of a smart city is due to its ability of favoring customers’ responsiveness and efficiency decisions. A broad range of challenging problems and issues related to the area of smart energy cities and regions is, therefore, being addressed within this Special Section on “Methods and Systems for a Smart Energy City” of the IEEE TRANSACTIONS ON INDUSTRIAL ELECTRONICS. Recent research and technology development trends, methods, and corresponding results are being covered by the included contributions of this Special Section, which is technically supported by the Technical Committee on Smart Grids (TC-SG) of the IEEE INDUSTRIAL ELECTRONICS SOCIETY. In a strict peer-review process supported by highly reputed international experts from the domain, finally, 27 excellent contributions out of around 60 submissions have been selected for publication in this Special Section. They address a wide range of challenging and interesting topics in the domain of smart energy cities, which can be mainly grouped into six clusters related to the following: 1) energy management and optimization problems; 2) demand response approaches; 3) energy market concepts; 4) microgrid control; 5) energy storage systems applications; 6) metering and sensor technology. Table I provides a brief overview of the assignment of the papers to the aforementioned clusters. In the following, the main content and contributions of these papers are briefly summarized in order to give the readers guidance through the content of this Special Issue.
