Abstract:<span>Special Issue B continues to address a set of research questions to complement Special Issue A which focused on China's rapid economic growth and the associated challenges. Examples discussed include unbalanced domestic growth, Africa-China migration, a game theoretic perspective on cooperation, and industry structure and policy changes. Critically, Issue B identifies opportunities as well as uncertainties for Chinese enterprises and institutions in their quest to become the world's leading economy. Specifically, papers examine issues related to the China Multinational Corporations (CMNC), workforce mobility, technological innovation, and the economic development of cultural industry, specifically, the film industry, all of which are having a profound impact on China's economic landscape. Their research focus includes: CMNC sociocultural distance and its impact on cross-border replication of activities; socio-political decisions in relation to innovation efficiency; the 'middle-income trap' and its effect on workforce mobility and 'functional inequality'. The frameworks, models, and theories discussed in these papers should help scholars to gain a better understanding of some of the social determinants of economic decisions as they relate to China's economic development.</span>

Abstract:Based on a hypothesis of increasing returns of scale and non-perfect competitive market,spatial economics is concerned with the power,forms,and effects of agglomeration,and explains how spatial factors work in resource allocation.China's present domestic researches on spatial economics focus on diversified agglomeration,which consists of industry agglomeration,urban cities and urban crowding as well as integrated regions.Through a study on the spatial distribution of industry agglomeration,researchers analyze the causes of agglomeration formation,especially the roles the opening-up and local protectionism(two special factors in China) play in the said formation,and then the effects the various agglomeration forms bring about.After presenting diversities of the agglomeration's effects,they acknowledge that China's regional differences are inevitable in a certain period of time.Therefore,factor floating and market integration play a decisive role in regional coordination and growth.These conclusions provide a fresh perspective for the further development of the theory concerning China's development and reform,and a new theoretical basis for the formulation of industrial policies and regional policies,while making more space for the development of spatial economics itself.Finally,it is pointed out that the domestic main research orientation in the future will be focused on the theoretic innovation of spatial economics,the development of micro-level mechanism of agglomeration,and the relationships between agglomeration and regional development.

Abstract:These years, the Asian-Pacific region, which is increasingly recognized as the center of global economy, has become a great contributor to global scientific research in many fields.In such process, a high-quality peer-review journal can play a significant role and constitute an important part in the dissemination of academic knowledge.The birth of Asia-Pacific Journal of Regional Science in such a period is to be congratulated!The Yangtze River Delta area in China is one of the fastest growing economic areas in the Asian-Pacific region.It is not only a growth pole of China but also an important force driving the steady development of the world economy.Based on the international metropolis of Shanghai, it utilizes the golden opportunity of world economic development to accelerate its own growth and thus has generated three distinctive but interconnected development models: the modern-service-oriented internationalized city development model of Shanghai; the FDI-based exportoriented open development model of Jiangsu; and the endogenous economic development model, characterized by businesses owned and managed by the people and for the people, of Zhejiang.Shanghai's modern service industry reduces its institution cost and transaction cost while Jiangsu and Zhejiang are the center of manufacture cost reduction.Together, they greatly raise the industrial competitiveness of the Yangtze River Delta economic zone.To study and disseminate these regions' experience, however, it is necessary to ascend to the theoretical level, carry out international comparisons and learn from international experience and theoretical guidance.I hope that Asia-Pacific Journal of Regional Science can become a high-level journal in terms of studying and disseminating the economic development experience of the Asian-Pacific region!

Abstract:Purpose In the past 70 years since the founding of the People’s Republic of China, China’s economic studies have been constantly centered on major issues such as national modernization, social economic development and the establishment, reform and improvement of socialist economic system. The paper aims to discuss this issue. Design/methodology/approach It has experienced a process of transition from the establishment of traditional Soviet’s paradigm of political economics to that of modern economics, during which drastic changes have been observed in various aspects of China’s economics, including research content, scope and methods. Findings Based on that, a discipline system of economics in line with international economics has been initially established. Currently, under the guidance of Marxism, scholars in China’s economics actively draw on the beneficial knowledge system and analytical methods from modern economics, emancipate their minds, seek truth from facts and constantly fortify confidence in the socialist path, theory, system and culture, continuously enhance the discourse power of China’s economics in global economic governance system, so as to push forward to the building of a theoretical system of socialist economics with Chinese Characteristics in the new era. Originality/value Economics is a discipline that studies resource allocation and human’s behavior of making a choice based on rationality. Emerged in the industrial revolution and developed in the exploration of a large-scale socialized mode of production and resource allocation system, this discipline has gradually become a broadly explanatory force in social sciences which profoundly affects the economic decision-making behaviors of the government and various economic entities.

Abstract:In recent years Europe has become a primary focus for Chinese investment. In the context of the rolling out of Chinese government plans such as its Belt and Road Initiative and 'Made in China 2025' industrial strategy, and the fact that many Chinese companies are either controlled or influenced by the Communist Party, major consequences for Europe's economic development — and its social, political and geopolitical corollaries — are now in train. The analyses presented in this special issue significantly advance our understanding of the dynamics and consequences of China's deepening economic engagements in Europe. They do so particularly in relation to the contentious issues surrounding corporate acquisitions by Chinese companies, the security problems associated with some investments and the impact of China's investment finance. This introductory article offers an institutional framework for comprehending the other articles that constitute the special issue and provides summaries of their contents. Additionally, it provides an assessment of how the special issue's contribution advances our understanding of China's externalization and its implications for European economic development.

Abstract:The past four decades have witnessed unprecedented economic growth and rapidly rising food demand in China. This paper provides an introduction to readers with useful information summarising the development of China’s agricultural sector and the transformation of its rural economy over the 40 years of economic reform. It is, however, impossible to cover all aspects of this recent and rich history in a single journal special issue. Nevertheless, we are of the view that these papers address the most fundamentally important and insightful topics including: land reform and rural development; technology progress and productivity growth; changing food consumption patterns; rural education and human capital accumulation; and poverty alleviation.

Abstract:Yangtze River Delta area is the most promising core economy zone in China with the fastest economic growth and the largest total economic output. In recent years, with the world industrial transfer and the acceleration of the pace of industrial upgrading, the Yangtze River Delta area is facing series of issues such as there shortage as well as the reasonable use of land resource. This paper propose new views of industrial upgrading and intensive land use by analyzing the statistics in these years, referring to the "smiling curve" and the law of diminishing marginal return .At the same time, the authors have consulted some successful experiences of intensive land use in Japan, South Korea and China Taiwan in the economic development process ,which the Yangtze River Delta area can learn from in order to better co-ordinate and balance relationship between the industrial development and use of land. According to the actual situation of industrial upgrading, the government should vigorously develop the service industry through the implementation of the integration of regional economics, so that the factors of production in the region mobilize to the area which can optimize the effectiveness, and optimize the allocation of resources, promoting regional economic development.

Abstract:China’s special economic zones helped the country industrialize by attracting foreign investment. In 2006, Beijing initiated an overseas trade and cooperation zone program, assisting Chinese companies to invest abroad while also building China’s soft power through the transfer of a key component of China’s development success. Little is known about the 19 zones approved so far under this program, or the impact they are likely to have on structural transformation and industrial development in their host countries. This paper identifies the 19 zones and their proposed locations, the process of selection, developers, implementation, and the Chinese incentive regime. It then focuses on the African zones. Using a typology of factors that have proven critical for zone development in the past, the paper evaluates the potential of these zones for fostering structural transformation in Africa.

Abstract:In this Introduction to the Special IIssue on Global trading system with the New American Administration: China, United States and Europe, three excellent papers are presented. The first paper highlights the central and eastern European countries' views on their relationships with China in the era of the pandemic. The second paper by Gao and Shaffer (forthcoming) presents a detailed legal discussion on the global value chains, including new development in intellectual property rights laws in China. The third paper by Wen (forthcoming) proposes that China should continue to participate in the global trading system and further reduce unnecessary government interventions in trade, investment and innovation. Finally, the Introduction highlights various important papers published by this Journal that are relevant to the theme. For example, Fung, Aminian, Fu and Tung (2018) and Fung, Amininian, Fu, Rhee and Tung (2020) are the first to introduce a formal, analytical digital firm model in the discussions of U.S.-China relations. Other outstanding papers include Lau (2019a), Cheng, hitten and Hua (2019), Garcia Herrero (2019) and Lin and Wang (forthcoming), all published in this Journal.
