Abstract:The challenges and opportunities facing African organizations reflect a long history of tensions, tragedies, triumphs, and accomplishments in relationships across continental boundaries. For example, Africa has long been a source of critical minerals and other raw materials that are integral to a wide range of global industries, but scholars of management have not integrated an understanding of Africa's role in global commerce fully in research on international exchange. Perhaps most importantly, scholarship in the field of management has not addressed the extensive opportunities for the development of innovative ideas, capabilities, capacities, inventions, and breakthroughs that would be made possible by international investments in human development and human capital on the continent. Resolving African problems and pursuing African opportunity requires renewed commitment by management scholars to this agenda. In this introductory article, we focus particularly on the structure of relationships across continental boundaries through global value chains (GVCs) and the role political and corporate sustainability conversations and initiatives play. We also seek to explore their implications especially for African organizations that simultaneously pursue economic growth and constructive social and environmental impact. We conclude with a framework for further study by management scholars on these important issues.

This is understandable as companies all over the world over are facing contemporary challenges such as intense global competition, rising market volatility, constantly changing consumer demand, and shortened product life cycles. Under these conditions, disruptive innovation and disruptive innovation-based entrepreneurship are increasingly becoming a strategic means for achieving sustainable company growth and competitiveness. Yet, limited research exists today on disruptive innovations in or by emerging economies. Therefore, this Special Issue in Journal of Engineering and Technology Management on Disruptive Innovation and Entrepreneurship in Emerging Economics is devoted to publishing original research that enriches our knowledge about the nature of disruptive innovation and entrepreneurship related with emerging economies, as well as their models, antecedents and economic, social and organizational consequences. Abstract:PurposeThis editorial article introduces and analyzes a variety of new organizational forms that rapidly emerged in Africa, Asia, Latin America and Eastern Europe in the latest two decades. Among the others, these include: business model partnerships, business platforms, incubators and hubs, public–private partnerships, agribusiness companies' foundations and spin-offs, short supply chains, community-supported agriculture and other community self-organizing experiences. Building upon the recent literature and the five selected papers in this special issue, the authors discuss what is novel in these organizations and why, when and how they emerge and evolve over time.Design/methodology/approachThe authors identify three elements that, when considered together, explain and predict the emergence and evolution of these new organizational forms: institutions, strategies and learning processes.FindingsThe authors demonstrate that societal actors seeking to (re)design these new organizational forms need to consider these three elements to combine the pursuit of their interests of their own constituencies with the sustainable development goals (SDGs).Originality/valueTaking stock from the literature, the authors invite future research on new organizational forms to take explicitly the pursuit of the SDGs into consideration; to build upon a process ontology; and to deeply reflect on our positionality of scientists studying and sometimes engaging in these organizations.

Abstract:This introductory chapter presents the objectives of this volume and discusses the challenges of producing relevant knowledge. It starts with an exploration of the reasons why Africa has remained neglected in economics, despite its important contributions to the discipline. It then highlights Africa’s enduring intellectual influence on some of the world’s leading economists. It discusses the traditional reasons why that deep positive influence is little known and rarely acknowledged in mainstream economics. It also offers a different explanation of the neglect of Africa as a rich source of economic knowledge, highlighting the fact that economic thinking on Africa has generally mirrored the general evolution of macroeconomics and the dominant frameworks of analysis of the continent’s low-income countries have always been fraught with analytical sins and mimetic choices.
Harnessing Internal and External Resources for Innovation in Emerging Economies

Abstract:Contrary to the perception that firms in emerging economies still rely mostly on cost advantages associated with low wages and economies of scale in production to compete, a significant number of enterprises in emerging economies are now investing heavily in innovation activities, and some have emerged to become global innovators. In particular, in several large emerging economies like China and India that have large and rapidly growing domestic markets, many indigenous firms have leveraged their superior local knowledge, and institutional connections to innovate faster and better than foreign firms from the advanced economies. Indeed, the growth of innovation activities – as measured by patenting outputs – has been much faster among emerging economies than among the advanced western economies in recent years. For example, in 2013 China accounted for 10% of the total number of patents filed with the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO), ranking third in the world after US and Japan. This rapid pace of growth in indigenous innovation outputs in China has been driven by increasing internal R&D spending, as well as increasing investment in tapping external technology resources, including inward technology licensing (ITL), mergers & acquisitions, and collaborative R&D with external partners. Despite differences in the scale, intensity, and sectoral composition of innovation activities between China and other emerging economies, this phenomenon of simultaneous harnessing of both internal and external resources for innovation is evident in most other emerging economies as well. It is thus timely for JCEBS to have a special issue to bring together the latest research findings on this fast-changing phenomenon of innovation in China and other emerging economies based on a collection of papers presented at the 6th Academy of Innovation and Entrepreneurship annual conference held in Oxford in 2010. While addressing different aspects of innovation and covering three different large emerging economies (China, Russia, and India), the five papers included in this special issue share a common focus on the interplay between the use of internal and external resources for innovation among indigenous firms. Abstract:Purpose This is a special issue of Chinese Management Studies and this study aims to engage with debates on innovation in China and to provide new insights for innovation research in the context of China, seeking to develop a greater understanding of the concept of "innovation with Chinese characteristics". Design/methodology/approach This study reviews the Chinese innovation management literature in general and the selected papers in this special issue in particular and proposes two new directions for future research. Findings The nine papers that constitute this special issue present research on important aspects of innovation in China, ranging from the effectiveness of government subsidisation for innovation, the impact of fiscal decentralisation on innovation, the role of management behaviour in promoting (or discouraging) innovation and the effects of differing business models on innovation. These papers shed valuable new light on the theory and practice of innovation in China. The papers are discussed in the context of four primary arguments about innovation management in China identified from the broader literature in the field. These relate to the pattern of China's innovation performance over time, the reasons for its effectiveness, the role of alliances and influences of indigenous factors. It is also shown that management of the internationalisation of innovation and of efficient internal innovation are two important directions for future research on Chinese innovation in an era of de-globalisation. Originality/value The studies presented here provide valuable contributions to theory building in innovation research, as well as some important ideas for directions of future research on innovation in China in the new era of de-globalisation.
Innovation in distributed energy services for sustainable development: Case studies from sub-Saharan Africa

Abstract:In this work, we explore how locally led innovations can advance sustainable energy access in low-income regions of Africa. Given the emphasis of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) on the importance of affordable, reliable, and sustainable energy, we critically assess how local innovations can address the unique challenges of regions characterized by informality and low purchasing power and where existing grid-based electricity supply is weak. Through case studies, we highlight successful initiatives in expanding energy services access, including product bundling, pay-as-you-go financial models, leveraging existing supply chains, and securing strong funding support. Our findings underscore the importance of local ownership, contextual knowledge, and the adaptation of innovations to specific socio-economic and cultural conditions. By comparing the case studies, we identify common strategies that can contribute to the effectiveness of local innovations in improving energy access and sustainability that can inform efforts to replicate and scale up such initiatives. We conclude by identifying common elements contributing to the success of these cases and their significance, focusing on those crucial for achieving speed, scale, and impact.

Abstract:Research on innovation and sustainability is prolific but fragmented. This study integrates the research on innovation in management and business and STEM fields for sustainability in a unified framework for the case of developing countries (i.e., the Global South). It presents and discusses the output, impact, and structure of such research based on a sample of 14,000 + articles and conference proceedings extracted from the bibliographic database Scopus. The findings reveal research output inflections after global announcements such as UN-Earth Summits. The study also reveals the indisputable leadership of China in overall output and research agenda-setting. Nonetheless, countries such as India, Mexico, and Nigeria are either more efficient or impactful. GS research published in highly reputable journals is still scarce but increasing modestly. Central topic clusters (e.g., knowledge management) remain peripheral to the global Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) research landscape. Finally, academic-corporate collaboration is in its infancy and limited to particular economic sectors: energy, pharmaceuticals, and high-tech.

Abstract:This proposed symposium offers important implications related to the theme of the 2018 Academy of Management meeting, Improving Lives. Innovation in emerging markets has been the topic of many discussions. Innovation can contribute to the economic development of underdeveloped, developing and emerging economies, and even developed countries. For example, innovation can bring more cost effective process of production to reduce the cost of products and services, which can provide a better life for the bottom of the pyramid or any marginalized group of people. Innovation in underdeveloped or developing countries can also allow firms engage in business with other countries that can ultimately bring economic development for the country and potentially move it up the global value chain and to the stage of emerging economy with much larger prospect of development. Abstract:After almost twenty years of internationalization, Chinese firms have demonstrated their ability to benefit from both international linkages and indigenous efforts in product and process innovation. However, how Chinese firm innovation is facilitated at the international and domestic levels remains to be understood. This article provides an overview of our special issue, exploring this important topic of global networks and innovation in China. Through five empirical studies employing a variety of research methods (e.g., case study, secondary data, survey, and fuzzy-set analysis), we present some recent research on balancing and manipulating internal and external networks to enhance Chinese firm innovation. These selected articles contribute to the field of networks and innovation in China. We hope these articles play a role in encouraging further research on this important and interesting field.

Abstract:Special Issue B continues to address a set of research questions to complement Special Issue A which focused on China's rapid economic growth and the associated challenges. Examples discussed include unbalanced domestic growth, Africa-China migration, a game theoretic perspective on cooperation, and industry structure and policy changes. Critically, Issue B identifies opportunities as well as uncertainties for Chinese enterprises and institutions in their quest to become the world's leading economy. Specifically, papers examine issues related to the China Multinational Corporations (CMNC), workforce mobility, technological innovation, and the economic development of cultural industry, specifically, the film industry, all of which are having a profound impact on China's economic landscape. Their research focus includes: CMNC sociocultural distance and its impact on cross-border replication of activities; socio-political decisions in relation to innovation efficiency; the 'middle-income trap' and its effect on workforce mobility and 'functional inequality'. The frameworks, models, and theories discussed in these papers should help scholars to gain a better understanding of some of the social determinants of economic decisions as they relate to China's economic development.

Abstract:Africa faces severe challenges from climate change, including rising temperatures, erratic rainfall, extreme weather events, and sea-level rise, which endanger ecosystems, livelihoods, and socio-economic stability. Africa-led innovation, driven by African communities, organizations, and governments, recognizes the continent's unique context and aims to empower communities to address climate change while promoting economic development, social equity, and environmental sustainability. Agriculture, water scarcity, clean energy access, and sustainable urbanization are critical concerns. Africa-led solutions are necessary alongside global efforts to tackle climate change. Environmental challenges like water and air pollution and droughts pose risks to public health, the economy, and social structure. Africa-led innovation leverages local resources and expertise and has yielded successful initiatives, including community-based adaptation, renewable energy expansion, climate-smart agriculture, coastal adaptation, forest conservation, and sustainable urban development. Collaboration, financing, policy frameworks, and knowledge sharing are crucial for scaling up Africa-led innovation. Prioritizing sustainable approaches, combining traditional knowledge with modern advancements, and ensuring affordable solar energy solutions in rural areas are essential. Supporting African-led initiatives, investing in research institution capacity building, and fostering collaboration at all government levels will contribute to a resilient future for Africa in the face of climate change.

Abstract:In this Introduction to the Special IIssue on Global trading system with the New American Administration: China, United States and Europe, three excellent papers are presented. The first paper highlights the central and eastern European countries' views on their relationships with China in the era of the pandemic. The second paper by Gao and Shaffer (forthcoming) presents a detailed legal discussion on the global value chains, including new development in intellectual property rights laws in China. The third paper by Wen (forthcoming) proposes that China should continue to participate in the global trading system and further reduce unnecessary government interventions in trade, investment and innovation. Finally, the Introduction highlights various important papers published by this Journal that are relevant to the theme. For example, Fung, Aminian, Fu and Tung (2018) and Fung, Amininian, Fu, Rhee and Tung (2020) are the first to introduce a formal, analytical digital firm model in the discussions of U.S.-China relations. Other outstanding papers include Lau (2019a), Cheng, hitten and Hua (2019), Garcia Herrero (2019) and Lin and Wang (forthcoming), all published in this Journal.
