Progress in Studies on Sulfonated Waterborne Polyurethane

Abstract:The properties and characteristics of sulfonated-waterborne polyurethane(WPU) were described in this paper,with emphasis on the types and the preparation techniques of sulfonated-WPU.There are various ways to incorporate the hydrophilic sulfonate groups into polyurethane macromolecules,one of which is using small molecular chain extender with sulfonate groups,and another is using polyester or polyether polyols with sulfonate groups or both of them.In addition to hydrophilic sulfonate groups,carboxylic acid groups and/or nonionic hydrophilic groups may also be introduced simultaneously in the molecular structure of waterborne polyurethane,forming a mixed internal emulsifier,which can greatly improve the stability of synthesizing process of WPU and reduce the total content of hydrophilic groups,thus improving the water-resistance and other physical-chemical properties of WPU.
