Abstract:Environmental friendly leather finishing agent based on polyurethane has attracted great attention in recent years.In this paper we reported the synthesis of polyurethane latex through pre-polymerization,chain extension,neutralization and emulsification using organic siloxane polymer as the modifier.The surface composition,surface hydrophilicity,and mechanical properties were investigated.The results indicated that the resultant latex could be stored up to one year.Furthermore,due to the introduction of organic siloxane blocks and the in situ crosslinking during the film formation,the coating was hydrophobic and showed excellent crocking fastness.

Abstract:Waterborne polyurethane(WPU)was prepared by using toluene diisocynate(TDI)and polyethylene glycol(PEG)as raw materials,and 2,2-dimethylolbutyric acid as chain extender.Hydroxyethyl methacrylate(HEMA)was used to terminate WPU.The self-emulsifying method was adopted to prepare HEMA-grafted WPU(HEMA-WPU)emulsion.Fourier transform infrared(FT-IR)and nuclear magnetic resonance(NMR)and thermogravimetric analysis(TG)were used to characterize the molecular structure and thermal endurance of HEMA-WPU.Compared with WPU,the thermal endurance of HEMA-WPU was raised obviously.The inter-laminar shear strength(ILSS)of carbon fiber/epoxy resin composite samples after sizing by the prepared emulsion was raised by 7.5%,reaching 64.5 MPa,compared with the un-sized samples.

Abstract:In view of environmental protection requirements, it is an inevitable trend for waterborne coatings to replace traditional coatings. Waterborne polyurethane (WPU), a kind of typical resin used in coatings, has become a research hot topic of waterborne coatings because of its advantages, such as non-polluting, safe and reliable, excellent properties, good compatibility, and easy modification. In this article, solvent-free WPU is prepared by mixing 4,4 '-dicyclohexylmethane diisocyanate/ isophorone diisocyanate (HMDI/IPDI) and polycarbonate diol/ Polycaprolactone diol (PCDL/PCL). Through the comparison of the properties of the polymer, the best amount of raw materials was determined. Specifically, R = 1.35 (R is NCO/OH ratio), the content of dimethylolpropionic acid (DMPA) is 5.5%, the content of trimethylol propane (TMP) is 2.5%, the mole ratio of HMDI/IPDI is 2:1, the mole ratio of PCDL/PCL is 2:1, and the preeminent WPU shows the excellent thermal stability, the contact angle of 118.04 degrees, the hardness is H. The chemical structures and rough surface morphologies of the WPU films were characterized by FT-IR, TG, AFM, and SEM, respectively. Therefore, considering the film properties, and the low cost, simple, and green process, this research will offer the possibility of application of this free-solvent WPU in industrial production and large-scale application.

Abstract:The stable waterborne epoxy emulsion with different solid content is successfully prepared by firstly make modification of epoxy resin with polyurethane,and then modified epoxy resin react with glycin.The result of performance test shows that the solubility of prepared waterborne epoxy resin decreases in organic solvent and increases in alkaline aqueous solution.As epoxy water paint,owing to combination of traditional technology of polyurethane modified epoxy resin,its solidified matter has excellent coating performance,particularly its flexibility and abrasion resistance have been improved more markedly.

Abstract:Polyurethane, a hydrophobic polymer with limited water solubility, is widely employed in applications including foam insulation, adhesives, coatings, and both flexible and rigid plastics. Waterborne polyurethane (WBPU) has emerged as a focal point due to its water-dispersible nature Its beneficial qualities, such as low emissions of volatile organic compounds (VOCs), simplicity of use, and environmental friendliness, are the reason for its appeal. WBPU is recognized for being non-toxic, non-flammable, and low VOC properties so it can help prevent the pollution of air water rather than increase. Moreover, it exhibits remarkable adhesion properties to a wide range of surfaces, such as glass and polymeric fibres. These exceptional qualities of WBPU have piqued the interest of researchers worldwide. This review focuses on the fundamental principles of WBPU chemistry and explores its physical attributes. It proceeds to provide an extensive examination of various studies, shedding light on the reaction procedures and mechanisms involved. Additionally, the article delves into the modifications introduced in the production process, the selection of source materials, and associated limitations.

Abstract:The most notable features of polyurea are its fast reaction, energy-saving and high efficiency. In order to meet the needs of environmental protection, waterborne polyurea (WPUA) has become a research hotspot. However, the presence of hydrophilic groups in WPUA reduces its solvent resistance, heat resistance and mechanical properties. Therefore, it is necessary and valuable to develop a high-performance WPUA. In this study, epoxy-modified waterborne polyurea (WPUAE) emulsions were prepared using epoxy resin as a modifier. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR) showed that E44 was successfully introduced into the molecular chain of WPUA. The WPUAE was tested for gel fraction, adhesion, contact angle, solvent resistance, tensile properties and thermal stability. The results showed that when the E44 content was 8 wt%, the performance of WPUAE was best, the adhesion of WPUAE coating film was 1.53 MPa, the gel fraction, water contact angle, water absorption, toluene absorption, tensile strength and decomposition temperature were 96.94%, 70.3°, 16.43%, 131.04%, 9.05 MPa and 365 °C, respectively. The results showed that epoxy resin as an emulsion modifier improved the comprehensive properties of WPUA.

Abstract:Waterborne polyurethane (WPU) prepolymer was first prepared based on isophorone diisocyanate (IPDI), polyether polyol (NJ-210), dimethylol propionic acid (DMPA), and hydroxyethyl methyl acrylate (HEMA) via an in situ method. A series of waterborne polyurethane-acrylate (WPUA) dispersions were obtained with different proportions of acrylate (butyl acryolate and ethyl acrylate) and initiating agent by in situ dispersion technique. The structures and thermal properties of prepared WPU and WPUA were analyzed and characterized with FT-IR, UV-vis spectroscopy, and DSC. Performance of the emulsion and film was studied by means of apparent viscosity, particle size and polydispersity, surface tension, and mechanical properties. The results indicated that the particle sizes of the WPUA dispersions were larger than those of the pure WPU and the solvent resistance and mechanical properties of WPUA films were improved over those of the WPU film. The film had the greatest hardness and the least water absorption when the BA:EA mass ratio was 50:50. The obtained WPUAs have great potential application such as coatings, leather finishing, adhesives, sealants, plastic coatings, and wood finishes.

Abstract:Waterborne polyurethane (PU) flame retarding gum (I) was synthesized with a special technology by use of waterborne PU as the base material and the added flame-retardants and auxiliary agents. Zeta potential and TEM tests stated the waterborne PU gum absorbed and partially occluded the flame retardants, and the resulted I had good stability. The flame retarding finishing technology was optimized by the orthogonal experiments, and the piloting experiments were carried out in Hongshan Coating Factory, Xiaoshan. The results showed that the finished fabrics attained the high level of the standard fort flame retardancy and other properties.

Abstract:The waterborne polyurethane (PU) prepolymer was first prepared based on isophorone diisocyanate, polyether polyol (NJ-210), dimethylol propionic acid (DMPA), and hydroxyethyl methyl acrylate via in situ method. The crosslinked waterborne polyurethane-acrylate (PUA) dispersions were prepared with the different functional crosslinkers. The chemical structures, optical transparency, and thermal properties of PU and PUA were confirmed by Fourier transform infrared spectrometry, ultraviolet–visible spectrophotometry, and differential scanning calorimetry. Some physical properties of the aqueous dispersions such as viscosity, particle size, and surface tension were measured. Some mechanical performances and solvent resistance of PUA films were systemically investigated. The experimental results showed that the particle sizes of the crosslinked PUA aqueous dispersions were larger than the PU and increased from 57.3 to 254.4 nm. When the ratios of BA/St, BA/TPGDA, and BA/TMPTA were 70/30, PUA films exhibited excellent comprehensive mechanical properties. The tensile strength and elongation at break of the film were 2.17 MPa and 197.19%. When the ratio of BA/St was 30/70, the film had excellent water resistance and was only 6.47%. The obtained PUA composites have great potential application such as coatings, leather finishing, adhesives, sealants, plastic coatings, and wood finishes. © 2011 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Abstract:<p>Waterborne polyurethane (WPU) dispersions with a high solid content were prepared by one‐step and two‐step methods with polyester and polyether type macromolecular diols as the main raw materials. The effects of two synthesis methods on the properties of WPU of polyester and polyether were studied. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, particle size and distribution, and Thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) measurements were utilized to characterize the structure. The dryness test results showed that the WPU synthesized with polyester diol as the soft segment by the two‐step method had the best drying. In addition, the microstructure of WPU was characterized by transmission electron microscopy, which confirmed that WPU was mainly spherical structure. TGA and scanning electron microscopy results showed that the microphase separation between the soft and hard segments of WPU prepared by the two‐step method was weaker, the hydrogen bonding was stronger, the adhesion, and thermal stability of WPU was improved.</p>

Abstract:Waterborne polyurethanes emulsions (WPU) based on polyethylene carbonate diol (PECD) were synthesized, characterized and modified by polypropylene carbonate diol (PPCD) and organosilicon KH-792. The mechanical, thermal and hydrolysis resistance properties of waterborne polyurethanes were comprehensively investigated. The results show that PECD based WPU has very excellent mechanical properties. The tensile strength and the elongation at break the PU was up to 73 MPa and 1040%, which was much higher than that reported for similar types of PPCD-based WPU. It was found that water absorption of PECD based WPU can be decreased dramatically, from 40.9% to 21.1%, after 50% PECD was replaced by PPCD, while tensile strength only decreased from 73.0 MPa to 63.4 MPa. The addition of KH-792 has great influence on PECD based WPU, when 1% KH-792 was added, the water absorption rate decreased from 21.1% to 11.88%, the mechanical strength remained at 63.3 MPa, the WPU film remained transparent after soaking in 80 °C hot water for 4 h.

Abstract:Waterborne coatings have obtained more and more attention from researchers with increasing concerns in environmental protection, and have the advantages of being green, environmentally friendly and safe. However, the introduction of hydrophilic groups leads to lower hydrophobicity and it is difficult to meet the requirements of complex application environments. Herein, we proposed an optimization approach of waterborne polyurethane (WPU) with vinyl tris(β-methoxyethoxy) silane (A172), and it was found that the surface roughness, mechanical properties, thermal stability and water resistance of WPU will be increased to a certain extent with the addition of A172. Moreover, the hydrophobicity of the coating film is best when the silicon content is 10% of the acrylic monomer mass and the water contact angle reaches 100°, which could exceed two-thirds of the research results in the last decade. Therefore, our study can provide some theoretical basis for the research of hydrophobic polyurethane coatings.

Abstract:The raw material for polyurethane synthesis is mainly polyols, while traditional polyols come from fossil resources. With the decrease of fossil resources, the synthesis of polyurethane by vegetable oil-based polyols has gradually gained more attention. Castor oil is a kind of plant oil-based polyols, which are the most suitable plant oil polyols because of its non-toxic, biodegradable and trihydroxy structure. Polyurethane synthesized with castor oil as a polyol has many special properties, such as good antibacterial properties, anti-UV properties, good biocompatibility and biodegradable properties. This paper explores the performance and application of castor oil-based cationic waterbased polyurethane (CWPU), which is helpful to promote its performance research and wider application.

Abstract:In environments with high humidity or water exposure, the performance of polyurethane materials could be adversely affected by water and its penetration, which could compromise their long-term utility. The influence of water on polyurethane materials is affected by water transport and various factors. This article summarizes the factors affecting the water absorption of polyurethane, introduces research methods for water transport in polyurethane, analyzes the pathways of water transport, and reviews the influence of water on the mechanical properties of polyurethane and its composite materials. The ultimate goal of this paper is to furnish a comprehensive theoretical foundation and a valuable reference for the research and practical application of polyurethane materials in water environments.

Abstract:<p>Waterborne polyurethane (WPU) prepolymers were firstly synthesized by toluene diisocynate (TDI), trimethylolpropane (TMP), polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS), N-methyldiethanolamine (N-MDEA) and glycerin monostearate (GMS). Then the prepolymers were chain-extended by aminoethylaminopropyl polydimethylsiloxane (AEAPS) to obtain fluorine-free water repellents. In this paper, the structure of AEAPS-modified waterborne polyurethane (AEWPU) was characterized, and the influence of different AEAPS contents on stability, particle size and viscosity of AEWPU, the waterproof performance, surface energy, contact-angle hysteresis and morphology of the AEWPU films. The application properties of the fabrics finished by AEWPU, the elements distribution of the film and the finished fabric were also discussed. The optimum AEAPS content of the water repellent was 20 wt%, then the highest score of 90+ was obtained.</p>

Abstract:Waterborne polyurethanes (WPU) are developed to address the environmental and health concerns of their solvent-borne counterparts. The versatile chemistry of PU enables the tailoring of their properties for a broad range of applications. The physical, chemical, and mechanical properties of the WPU depend on the choice of monomer and monomer ratio. This mini-review discusses the synthesis of WPU and the influence of the choice of materials on their properties. Besides, the various strategies to improve the properties are highlighted. Abstract:A series of modified waterborne polyurethane (WPU) with various epoxy contents was synthesized from poly (propylene carbonate) diol (PPCD)-based polyurethane prepolymer and ring-opening epoxy resin (RO-EP). The particle size, storage stability, and freeze-thaw resistance of the emulsions were examined. The pencil hardness and adhesion level of the films were tested. The structure of the modified waterborne polyurethane was characterized by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy. The thermal stability of the modified waterborne polyurethane was studied by thermogravimetric analysis. The corrosion resistance of emulsion coating was tested by the salt spray test and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS). The waterborne polyurethane emulsion modified by RO-EP had excellent storage stability. When the content of the ring-opening epoxy resin was 10 wt%, the particle size of WPU was the smallest. The corresponding coating had excellent hardness and adhesion level. The salt spray and EIS test showed that the WPU coating with 10% RO-EP had superior corrosion resistance.

Abstract:A kind of polyester diol was synthesized in which para-toluenesulfonic acid was as catalyst,adipic acid and 1 ,3-dipropylene glycol were as raw materials.The results of single-factor test show that the optimum conditions are that the molar ratio of 1,3-propanediol with adipic acid is 1.3,the amount of catalyst is 1%(basing on the total weight of 1,3-dipropylene glycol and adipic acid),reaction temperature is 130 ℃ and the reaction time is 3 h.The re-sults of infrared spectrum and 1 H-NMR spectrum show that the structure of product is same with the expected product.The GPC characterization shows that the relative molecular mass is 1 019 and the polydispersity is 1.073.The crystallinity degree of product is 25.92%.Two kinds of waterborne polyurethanes were prepared by using polyester diol Prepared by the la-boratory and commercial polyester diol,respectively.The experiment results show that the e-lasticity of waterborne polyurethane film prepared by polyester diol Prepared by the labora-tory is better than that prepared by using commericial polyester diol,as well as the handle is softer,the degree of crystallinity is less,but the water resistance is worse.
