PCB Ion Trap Mass Analyzer

Abstract:A novel method is proposed to construct an ion trap mass analyzer based on normal printed circuit board(PCB)fabrication technology.The PCB ion trap,consisting of four PCB electrodes and two metallic electrodes,has a simple structure and very low cost.A PCB ion trap mass spectrometer,including relevant vacuum system,electronic systems and ion detection devices,was designed and constructed based on the PCB ion trap and electron impact(EI)ion source.Samples such as carbon tetrachloride and toluene were used to characterize the instrument experimentally. Preliminary experiments demonstrated that the PCB ion trap has better than 400 mass resolution and higher than 300 Thomson mass range.
